Known for his commanding presence and impressive skill with prose, Sir Ian McKellen is among the best actors of a generation who can bring depth to any role he’s given, create great chemistry with other actors and capture the audience’s attention whenever on screen. Appearing in several films over decades, the actor has performed in all sorts of genres and has consistently chosen projects that engage with the viewer, while also highlighting great filmmaking on display.
At the same time, some dedicated fans may assume that Ian McKellen’s work extends to only franchise-heavy material, however, the actor’s expansive filmography ranges in size of spectacle, drama and narrative scale, where no matter the film, Ian McKellen commits himself to the performance and helps make each project that much better. Moreover, with each Ian McKellen film offering something different to say to viewers, it re-establishes how truly versatile...

BritBox has announced that Shetland Season 9 will premiere on December 11, 2024. New episodes will air weekly until the finale on January 15. Previous seasons of Shetland are available to stream on BritBox.
The new season of the acclaimed murder-mystery drama sees Ashley Jensen and Alison O’Donnell reprise their roles as Detectives Ruth Calder and Alison ‘Tosh’ McIntosh.
A double missing persons case blurs the lines between the personal and the professional, as Calder and Tosh are drawn into a labyrinthine investigation. When Tosh’s friend, Annie Bett, goes missing she suspects something is seriously wrong.
Ruth Calder – now living in Shetland – has no time to recover from a life-threatening ordeal of her own, as together they set out in search of Annie and her young son, Noah. They discover accountant Annie is estranged from her husband, Ian, and has been staying with mussel farmer John Harris and his two sons, Patrick and Fergus.

We catch up with Kenneth Branagh to chat Jack Ryan, In The Bleak Midwinter and paying Joan Collins in postal orders.
It's a very quiet, calm, polite and considered Kenneth Branagh we meet in the midst of a posh hotel in London. Outside the door of the allotted room there's a buzz of activity. Behind it? There's Branagh, hours away from the premiere of his latest movie, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, enjoying the simple pleasure of a cup of tea. Which is when we hit him with our bombshell...
I fear somebody didn't give you the handover notes when doing a Jack Ryan movie and playing a Russian character. That you either have to approach it by getting in Sean Connery, and not bother with the accent at all, or you have to get in someone like the late Richard Marner from 'Allo 'Allo.

*full disclosure: a Blu-Ray screener of this film was provided by 20th Century Fox for review. Director: James McTeigue. Writers: Ben Livingston and Hannah Shakespeare. Cast: John Cusack, Luke Evans, Alice Eve, Brendan Gleeson, Kevin McNally, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Jimmy Yuill, Sam Hazeldine, Pam Ferris, Brendan Coyle, Adrian Rawlins, Aidan Feore, and Dave Legeno. Tagline: "The only one who can stop a serial killer is the man who inspired him." The Raven originally released in theatres in April, 2012. The film was well received; but, this title was by no means a hit. Recently, this feature was released for the first time on home video formats (October 9th). The Raven is light entertainment. Although Edgar Allan Poe was a famous American writer with an interesting history, the film here is a fictional account of Poe's final days. Poe must track down his nemesis by revisiting his best works such as "The Raven...

Welcome to our new web series: Ticket or Skip It. Reporting from his room aboard the USS Echo, a small submarine conducting biological research in the Atlantic Ocean, comes reviewer Corey Wood, who has agreed to grace us on a weekly basis with an update of all the new films hitting cinemas around the world (which he gets to watch via satellite in a private screening room aboard this seafaring vessel). Watch as Corey loves up on The Raven while punching The Five-Year Engagement in the face.
About The Raven, Mr. Wood had this to say.
"I really enjoyed it. It is my favorite movie of 2012 so far."
The Five-Year Engagement brought the exact opposite reaction.
"This movie sucked. It was horrible. I was so disappointed, and baffled by how bad this film turned out to be."

In Carl Tibbetts’ debut film as a writer and director, he paints a portrait of a modern couple thrown into the most primitive of situations. While vacationing in a remote island cottage they had come to some eight years prior, Martin (Cillian Murphy) and Kate (Thandie Newton) are confronted with the true horrors of humanity when Jack (Jamie Bell) arrives to disturb their peaceful getaway.
The film starts out quietly, as Martin and Kate are delivered to their destination by Doug (Jimmy Yuill), the owner of the cottage, and they go about “enjoying” themselves. There is so much tension in these early scenes between the couple that I wondered why they would isolate themselves further from the world in an attempt to heal their collective wounds.
A wounded soldier (Jamie Bell) is found on the beach one morning by Martin and brought back to the cabin against Kate’s wishes.
