Film Review: To Kill a Mastermind (1979) by Sun Chung
Image
To be fair, traditional wuxia and kung fu cinema was already on the decline by the time “To Kill a Mastermind” was released. A new trend had emerged—family-friendly kung fu comedies—which quickly dominated the market. In this shifting landscape, “To Kill a Mastermind” attempted to preserve the spirit of old-school martial arts storytelling, blending intricate action with intrigue.

The martial world is in chaos. The Seven Evils Society, led by the mysterious Grand Master, is rising in power. Besides terrorizing the weak, the society ruthlessly eliminates upright martial artists who oppose them. Meanwhile, the Imperial Count and the remaining righteous sects form an alliance, using subterfuge and deception to pit the Seven Evils chiefs against one another.

Director Sun Chung, known for balancing character development and action, shifts his focus here almost entirely to choreography. While the plot holds promise,...

Mainland-born Yip Wing Cho began his career at Shaw Brothers Studio as a photography assistant under director Lo Wei, working on titles like “Raw Courage”, “The Golden Sword” (1969), and “Brothers Five” (1970). He later transitioned to directing with “Girl of Ghost Valley”, starring Hsing Hui, and “The Black Tavern”, both from scripts written by his father, Yip Yat Fong. During the revival of Cantonese cinema, Yip spent his later career acting in numerous romantic comedies and crime thrillers.

15 Modern Martial Arts Movies 100% (Or Close To It) On Rotten Tomatoes
Image
It’s astounding how many great modern martial arts movies have received near-universal praise on Rotten Tomatoes. While it’s well known that iconic classics of years gone by, like Seven Samurai and Yojimbo, have long been favored by movie critics, these films' legendary status can sometimes overshadow the merits of more recent martial arts triumphs in the 21st century. That’s why it’s important to take the time to praise modern martial arts movies that have pushed the genre into brave new territory in recent years and continued to enthrall viewers with spectacular fight sequences.

Some of the all-time great martial performances occurred in the 21st century, and acclaimed directors like Zhang Yimou and Ang Lee have kept the quality of martial arts cinema high. These excellent films boasted spectacular performances from modern martial arts stars like Tony Jaa, Jet Li, and Michelle Yeoh. While martial arts cinema...

Blu-ray Review: Sammo Hung’s ‘Eastern Condors’ on the Criterion Collection
Image
Like much of actor-choreographer-director Sammo Hung’s work behind the camera, 1987’s Eastern Condors is a collision of disparate tones held together through sheer force of will. During the Vietnam War, a group of Chinese prisoners get a chance at parole and American citizenship if they undertake a secret mission to destroy a cache of weapons before they can fall into the hands of the Viet Cong. This sets up a standard war movie abundant in heroic sacrifice, last-stand shootouts, and archetype characters, but Hung brings his martial arts expertise and propensity for slapstick to a film otherwise keyed to the tragic human waste of war.

Proof of the influence that Hung, who stars in the film as Tung Ming-sun, wielded within the Hong Kong industry, the members of the ad hoc suicide squad at the film’s center are played by a who’s-who of stars and character actors,...

Sammo Hung, Kung Fu Superstar, Sets Masterclass, Screenings in Singapore – Global Bulletin
Image
Kung Fu Hustle

Kung Fu superstar Sammo Hung will deliver a masterclass on May 4 as part of the 12th Singapore Chinese Film Festival. He will also attend a mini-retrospective of his films. Hung studied under Peking Opera master Yu Jim Yuen at a young age and was the “big brother”’ to the China Drama Academy’s performance troupe known as the Seven Little Fortunes, whose members included Jackie Chan, Yuen Biao, Yuen Wah, Yuen Qiu and Corey Yuen. He starred in “Painted Faces” (1988), which was based on his time in the Seven Little Fortunes.

Hung’s career as an actor, action choreographer, director and producer spans some 60 years. His acting credits include action comedies “Dirty Tiger, Crazy Frog” and “Odd Couple,” paranormal horror comedies “Encounters of the Spooky Kind” and “The Dead and the Deadly,” comedy film series “Lucky Stars” and gangster action film “Shanghai, Shanghai.” In 1982, Hung won the...

Film Analysis: She Shoots Straight (1990) by Corey Yuen
Image
Corey Yuen's career may not have hit the heights of his contemporaries Yuen Woo Ping and Sammo Hung but when it came to female led action films, he can certainly claim to have a huge influence, being the director of the seminal “Yes Madam”. He would later rather unsuccessfully try to merge Category III with the genre in the poor “Women on the Run” and remake John Woo's “The Killer” into the Shu Qi starring “So Close”. Yet it is “She Shoots Straight” that comes the closest to matching “Yes Madam” for energy and similarity in form and in many aspects. With Eureka Entertainment releasing a remastered Blu Ray in the UK in September, it's time to go back and revisit one that possibly audiences might have missed out on.

Inspector Mina (Joyce Godenzi) is about to marry Inspector Huang Tsung-pao (Tony Leung Ka-fai) the only male in a family filled with policewomen.

“Clans of Intrigue” was Chor Yuen's first and highly successful adaptation of Gu Long's “Fragrance from the Sea of Blood”, a series of three wuxia novels about Chu Liu Hsiang. A sequel adapted from the first installment of a five-novel series “The New Legend of Chu Liu Hsiang” titled “Legend of the Bat” soon followed and saw the return of protagonist Chu “Lingering Fragrance” and with the help of his ally Yi Tian Hung investigating more mysteries and murder cases.

Eureak to release ‘Hopping Mad: The Mr Vampire Sequels’ collection on Blu-ray!
Image
Eureka Entertainment are set to release Hopping Mad: The Mr Vampire Sequels, four more vampire-hopping films featuring a bevy of Hong Kong legends. Presented as part of the Eureka Classics range in their UK debuts on Blu-ray from stunning new restorations.

After the huge success of Mr. Vampire, Hong Kong audiences were desperate for more vampire-hopping action and the films’ producers were more than happy to oblige. A steady stream of jiangshi content was produced over the following years, and presented here are 4 of these classic titles from stunning new restorations.

In Mr Vampire II (aka Vampire Family) an archaeologist and his students unwittingly set free a family of hopping vampires who wreak havoc in 1980s Hong Kong. Mr Vampire III returns to a period setting and sees Lam Ching-ying’s Taoist priest battle an evil witch (a brilliant performance by veteran actress Pauline Yuk-Wan Wong). Mr Vampire IV (aka...

Film Review: Clans of Intrigue (1977) by Chor Yuen
Image
Hardly a stranger in the wuxia films universe, Chor Yuen from the Shaw Brothers Studio is renowned for his adaptations of Ku Lung’s swordplay wuxia novels onto the big screen, starting with “Killer Clans” in 1976 that ultimately made him well known internationally. “Clans of Intrigue”, adapted from “Fragrance in the Sea of Blood” is one of five such films the prolific director released in 1977.

Highly skilled in chigong (energy power) and a reputable player in the Jianghu (Martial arts world), “Thief Master” Chu Liu Hsiang (Ti Lung) steals from the rich to help the poor and lives in a luxurious boathouse with three beautiful maidens. He carries a metal fan for self-defense even though he is renowned as someone who doesn’t kill his enemies.

One evening, while having dinner with his friends Monk Wu Hua (Yeah Hua) and Nan Gong Lin (Tien Ching) Chief of the Beggar Clan,...

Film Review: Septet: The Story of Hong Kong (2020) by Sammo Hung, Ann Hui, Patrick Tam, Yuen Wo-ping, Johnnie To, Ringo Lam, Tsui Hark
Image
Seven short films, shot on 35mm and directed by 7 of Hong Kong’s most acclaimed and significant directors, form a heartfelt symphony about Hong Kong. In the original plan, conceived by Johnnie To, this anthology was going to be an 8-director piece, called “Eight & a Half”, where each director was given the task to illustrate the zeitgeist of a decade of Hong Kong’s recent history, starting in the 50’s. Unfortunately, John Woo had to leave the project due to personal issues, and the omnibus’ title was changed into “Septet”. Firstly presented at Cannes Film Festival in 2020, “Septet: The Story of Hong Kong” is now finally released in cinemas in China, on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Handover.

Film Review: Kung Fu Hustle (2004) by Stephen Chow
Image
It’s always good to bow out leaving people wanting more. Yet if you were to tell us back in 2004 that “Kung Fu Hustle” would be the penultimate time we would see Stephen Chow in front of the camera then very few would believe you. His cinematic popularity was at its apex with international recognition coming through the release of “Shaolin Soccer” and this subsequent follow up. With only “CJ7” to come a few years later. Alongside “Shaolin Soccer” this madcap action-comedy both sends up and homages the martial arts cinema that Stephen Chow loves so much and serves as an ideal entry point to his world of Mo Lei Tau comedy.

Film Review: 'Shang-Chi' Proves to be a Master of Multiple Genres
Chicago – There is an undeniable pleasure in watching films that don’t take themselves too seriously. Nothing against the Nolans and Snyders of the comic book universe because they provide an essential service to the film community with their more grounded, dramatic approach.

Rating: 4.5/5.0

Even so, there is something about the Gunns and Waititis that reminds us that these types of films should be fun, even if they have little to no significance in a real-world setting, mostly leaving any social or political commentary buried in subtext if it’s even present at all. In most cases, this approach is the safe one, even if it sometimes robs a film of the potential to be more. In this case, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings toes the line carefully, delivering exactly the energy we expect from a Marvel film and more, even if it leans too much into...

Mister Vampire
Image
Guest reviewer Lee Broughton returns with an assessment of Ricky Lau’s Hong Kong comedy horror show-cum-mystical martial arts romp. Introduced to the vampire mythos are some novel ideas, like scary-looking vampires that get around by hopping on two legs. Effective horror scenarios include expertly choreographed martial arts routines. However, the score on the genre mash-up front is “two out of three ain’t bad:” the brand of broad comedy that Mr. Vampire peddles is hit and miss when it comes to generating genuine laughs.

Right, let me first prefix this by saying that I am and always will be a big fan of Sammo Hung.

The Peking Opera school was run from a small theatre by Master Yu Jim Yuen, this was where Sammo Hung would begin his journey. In them days, the stundents would normally enroll for around 10 years, each day performing gruelling tasks for up to 18 hours a day which included training in the Martial Arts, weapons training, acrobatics, acting and singing. The Peking opera of course brought together Sammo Hung, Jackie Chan, Yuen Biao, Yuen Wah, Corey Yuen, Yuen Tak and Yuen Mo, who would eventually be known as the 7 Little Fortunes. Police Story: ranking the movies in order of quality
facebook

google+

Police Story might just be the greatest action franchise of all time. But which movies are the best in the series?

After his disappointing experience in America filming The Protector, Jackie Chan returned to Hong Kong determined to make his own cop film his own way. The result - Police Story - kickstarted perhaps the greatest action franchise of all time; a series of films that still deliver thrills of a near-religious magnitude for genre fans.

Aside from the two reboots, the Police Stories revolve around Jackie's maverick Hong Kong cop Ka-Kui Chan (or Kevin Chan, in the English dubs) with frequent appearances from his lovably inept superior 'Uncle Bill' (Bill Tung) and his long-suffering girlfriend May (Maggie Cheung). The story continuity is a little ropey but instead each instalment offers a new, and usually more improbable, case for Ka-Kui to crack.

There's a blend of comedy,...

Retro Digital: The Long Strange Home Video Journey Of Jackie Chan's "Supercop"
By Fred Blosser

Life moves at warp speed these days. Almost overnight, cutting-edge in arts and technology becomes old-school.

It seems like only yesterday that the Hong Kong movies of Jackie Chan and John Woo were the big new flavor in action cinema, and laser disc was the medium of choice for upscale home theater. In reality, it’s more like yesteryear, and at that, nearly two decades of yesteryears.

How many of today’s kids under 20 would you have to ask before you found one who’s seen a Jackie Chan film? How many have even heard of laser disc, let alone loaded one of those unwieldy LP-sized platters into an equally clunky player?

These nostalgic if chilling thoughts occurred to me when, recently, I browsed through an old issue of “Mystery Scene” magazine and came across a review I’d written back in the day. The topic was Jackie Chan,...

100 Great Kung Fu Movies – Part 3 (59-40)
When it comes to making features like this one, i love the idea of coming up with my own personal “100 Great Kung Fu Movies” of all time. It is tough choosing just 100 because you know there are many more great Kung Fu movies that are not on the list.

I have decided that to make the list, a movie must have a few hand to hand moments during fight scenes in the movies chosen. If for example its mainly sword play with one fight scene hand to hand it won’t make the list. Its old school “style” Kung Fu movies, not modern day settings.

I understand everyone will have their own personal favorites and some may not agree with my list and that’s fine because it’s nice to have different opinions on this genre which keeps it fresh and alive when having good debates.

Anyway, thank you...

The Raymond Chow And Golden Harvest Era (Part 1)
Golden Harvest started in 1970, after Raymond Chow had left Shaw Brothers studios along with producer Leonard Ho and decided to start there own company and go up against the dominance of Shaw Brothers.

Shaw Brothers had been the leading studio for many years, showcasing legendary Directors, Actors and Marital Artists. Raymond Chow and Leonard Ho knew they had to come with something big and make a huge noise in the world of cinema and indeed they did just that. They made a few movies in 1971 such as The Angry River, Lady Whirlwind and One Armed Boxer. But one Actor stood out over the rest, showcasing his incredible talent for the first time in a big movie and his name was Bruce Lee. When the Big Boss premiered in Hong Kong, the audience cheered and mobbed Bruce after the movie had ended.

Get Ready For Tiger Cop 1-2 Directed By Adrian Castro
Written and Directed By:Adrian Castro

Produced By:Maria Tran

Dop:Justin Gong

Fight Choreographer:Trung Ly

Cinematographer:Justin Gong

Make-up Artist:Taylor Davis

Tiger Cop is a fine example of the classic 1980’s Chinese Martial Art genre. If you are fans of Yukari Oshima, Moon Lee and Cynthia Rothrock then this right up your street. Tiger Cop is two sets of extravagant trailers which pays homage to them movies and stars which brought us hard-hitting fight scenes over the years.

Maria Tran plays the new inspector on the force and right away she gets into trouble when introduced to her new partner. It’s a very well choreographed fight scene showcasing Maria’s hand to hand combat, the art of blocking and some very nice kicks. Maria really mixes it up, when watching the fights it takes me back to watching movies such as Angels, Outlaw brothers, Yes Madam and more.

‘Enter the Dragon’ – A Cultural Education
Enter the Dragon

Written by Michael Allin and Bruce Lee

Directed by Robert Clouse and Bruce Lee (uncredited)

USA and Hong Kong, 1973

For most people, Enter the Dragon is a quintessential action film. The first Chinese martial arts film co-produced in Hollywood, it launched the genre, not to mention its late leading man Bruce Lee, to Western audiences. Not only does it compass elements of a thriller and an action film, but it is also culturally relevant.

Shaolin member Lee (Bruce Lee) is invited to a competition against other martial artists organised by Han (Shih Kien), a mysterious man who is being investigated by British Intelligence for drug trafficking and prostitution. While other competitors such as Roper (John Saxon) and Williams (Jim Kelly) are respectively evading the mob and the law, Lee participates to regain the honour of the Shaolin temple and seek revenge for his sister’s death.
