WWE Evolution: Trish Stratus Puts a Banger at 49 Years of Age But It’s Nothing Compared to Mae Young’s Record
Image
WWE Evolution 2025 was a night of celebration of the women of the past and present in the Stamford-based promotion. The show featured top competitors of today’s landscape and veterans in attendance. However, WWE Hall of Famer Trish Stratus was among those legends who stepped inside the ring rather than watch from the sidelines.

At the age of 49, The Diva of the Decade delivered, in the words of WWE superstar, a banger. She justified the ‘You still got it’ chants from the audience. However, when compared to a stunning record etched by WWE legend, Mae Young, sadly, Stratus does not come anywhere close to her.

Queen Of The Ring Movie Ending Explained: Did Mildred Burke Retain Her Title?
Image
Wrestling has long been considered primarily a men’s sport, and with huge personas like Hulk Hogan, Ric Flair, and Andre the Giant in the late 70s and 80s, and masculinity is definitely what we’ve come to associate with the history of professional wrestling. In a time when two women fighting in the ring was considered illegal in most of the states of America, a waitress dared to dream big. Directed by Ash Avildsen, Queen of the Ring crackles with the same electric energy you’d expect from the most thrilling storylines in the wrestling world.

‘Queen of the Ring’ Review: Emily Bett Rickards Has Star Power in Starry-Eyed Wrestling Biopic
Image
“I can’t sing and I can’t dance,” Mildred Burke tells her future manager, husband, business partner (and later ex-husband and rival) Billy Wolfe. “But I can tell a story and beat some ass.”

What a story, and what an ass-beating. “Queen of the Ring” is a wide-eyed and inspirational biopic about Burke, born Mildred Bliss, who defied gender norms, broke arbitrary laws separating and limiting the participation of all genders in sports, and shattered the glass ceiling. She was a single mother, an entrepreneur and I hope I never get punched as hard as she can punch. At a time when women’s wrestling was outlawed throughout much of the United States, she not only proved it could be done, but also that it could be profitable as hell.

Mildred Burke is played by Emily Bett Rickards, who is best known for playing the hacker Felicity Smoak on the superhero TV series “Arrow.

Queen of the Ring Review: A Feel Good Wrestling Biopic
Image
Plot: In a time when pro wrestling for women was illegal all over the United States, a small town single mother embraces the danger as she dominates America’s most masculine sport and becomes the first million dollar female athlete in history.

Review: Wrestling biopics prove that what happens behind the scenes in the industry, is often more entertaining than what happens between the ropes. While frequently labeled as “fake”, there’s plenty that goes into who gets the 1,2,3. The politics of who wins being settled in a real “shoot” match feels like something that only cinema can provide. Yet this was a reality back in the day, and Queen of the Ring puts these stories at the forefront, giving us an insight into the squared circle that often goes unspoken.

Emily Bett Rickards stars as Mildred Burke, a pioneer in professional wrestling. She wrestled at a time when lady...

Queen of the Ring Review: Wrestling Through History
Image
“Queen of the Ring” is a powerful biographical film that tells the incredible story of Mildred “Millie” Burke, a trailblazing wrestler who broke glass ceilings long before it became a cultural catchphrase. The film, directed by Ash Avildsen and based on Jeff Leen’s book, tells the incredible story of a woman who converted wrestling from a male-dominated spectacle to a platform for female athletic prowess.

The film, set in 1930s and 1940s America, depicts Burke’s transformation from a struggling single mother working in a Kansas cafe to the first million-dollar female athlete in history. Her story is nothing short of revolutionary, coming at a time when women’s wrestling was neglected and frequently illegal throughout most of the United States.

Emily Bett Rickards has a standout performance, embodying Burke’s ferocious determination and complex personal life. The film does more than just praise athletic achievement; it also portrays...

‘Queen of the Ring’ Review: Emily Bett Rickards Brings Soul and Strength to Female Wrestling Biopic
Image
Wrestling pics are having a moment. Last year saw the excellent, if unjustly ignored, The Iron Claw, about the ill-fated Von Erich brothers. Now comes Ash Avildsen’s hugely entertaining, old-fashioned biopic about Mildred Burke. If you don’t know who Burke is (and the vast majority probably don’t), this film aims to correct that. A pioneer of the sport who became the first million-dollar female athlete in history, Burke was a three-time women’s world champion from the 1930s through the 1950s, a time when women’s wrestling wasn’t even legal in most of the country. Her story fairly demands to be told, and Queen of the Ring, which served as the opening night film of the 39th annual Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival, largely does it justice.

Based on Jeff Leen’s extravagantly titled 2009 book The Queen of the Ring: Sex, Muscles, Diamonds, and the Making...

Heels Female Hero Turns Into A Great Wrestling Movie Villain
Image
Kelli Berglund, who plays the heroic champion pro wrestler Crystal Tyler on Netflix's Heels, takes a turn as a villainous wrestler in Queen of the Ring. Written and directed by Ash Avildsen, Queen of the Ring is an upcoming film chronicling the life and career of Mildred Burke (Emily Bett Rickards), the first million-dollar female pro wrestler who was a superstar in the 1940s and 1950s. I was delighted to screen Queen of the Ring at the Newport Beach Film Festival, and it's a riveting and rousing pro wrestling biopic with a stellar cast from top to bottom.

In Heels, Crystal Tyler is the underdog female star of the Duffy Wrestling League (Dwl) run by Jack Spade (Stephen Amell). Crystal fights her way up from her role as the valet of Ace Spade (Alexander Ludwig) to a legitimate pro wrestler, spearheading the creation of the Dwl's women's division. In...

11 Most Evil Things WWE Heels Have Ever Done
Ted DiBiase

Sure, they're likable anti-heroes, but these characters have done some truly despicable things.

Hah! Like even the worst things that TV characters have done could ever compare to the madness of the WWE universe.

Forget morally complicated. Some of these heels are absolute bonkers when it comes to playing psychological mind games and doing dirty deeds.

They go full-on psychopath and lose their souls all for a taste of World Wrestling Entertainment Championship gold. What is it about that belt that justifies going off the deep end?

Regardless, here are the 11 most evil things WWE heels have ever done.

(Storylines only and not in real life, of course!)

11. The Million Dollar Man kept a slave.

‘Glow’: 30 Years After the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling, the WWE and Others Are Still Figuring Out What to Do With Women
Netflix’s “Glow” arrives at a time when women who step inside the squared circle are taken much more seriously than they were 30 years ago.

The show re-creates the world of the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling, the campy all-female promotion whose 1980s heyday is fictionalized in the new series starring Alison Brie. Fittingly, its subject helped start that process three decades ago.

Last weekend’s Money in the Bank pay-per-view was emblematic of the current state of women’s wrestling in WWE, both in terms of how far it’s come and how much further it still has to go. On the one hand, it featured the first-ever women’s Money in the Bank ladder match (progress!), which guarantees the winner a championship match at the time of her choosing. On the other hand, it ended when a dude named James Ellsworth ascended the ladder and dropped the briefcase down...

A bright, neon-lit corner of the ‘80s was occupied by a popular TV show centered on an all-female wrestling league. They were the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling -- or, simply, Glow. Founded in 1986, Glow ran for four seasons on TV, bringing colorful characters -- Corporal Kelly, Dallas and Tina Ferrari among them -- to living rooms across the country. Now, almost 30 years after going off the air, they are back as the inspiration behind one...

8 Insane Storylines WWE Would Never Do (But Totally Should)
WWE.com

In the long ago late ‘90’s, in the faraway land of Stamford, Connecticut, Vince McMahon, his awful kids and Vince Russo, created some of wrestling’s most bizarre and flat-out insane storylines. Since that Attitude Era heyday, the company has made a ruthlessly aggressive effort to clean up its act.

Whether the change came because of Linda McMahon’s Senatorial run or just a natural evolution to attract new audiences, WWE is now solidly PG programming. Turn on Raw and you’ll see superstars blowing up at each other over things like… popcorn. Hey, at least they stopped making those “Marine” movies, right?

But, adult WWE fans were raised on Mae Young giving birth to a hand and Hhh screwing a mannequin in a coffin, they miss insanity. Kooky, crazy or even controversial storylines would raise the emotional stakes and keep things unpredictable.

And in some cases, the...

10 WWE Moments That Prove Ruthless Aggression Era Was Best
WWE.com

As we’ve talked about so many times on this very site, there is an unfathomable amount of wistfulness for WWE’s Attitude Era that is simply unparalleled in pop culture, and borderline unhealthy in the wrestling community. It’s typically hoisted as the greatest time period in the industry’s long history, with only the Rock N’ Wrestling Era a serious competitor.

But let me toss out another, less talked about time in the WWE that deserves at least some consideration when discussing the greatest age in wrestling: Ruthless Aggression.

While this era from 2002 to 2007 featured some of the company’s biggest stars and greatest matches, it simply doesn’t get the same kind of wistful attention as the celebrated Attitude Era. A lot of people, for whatever reason, seem to forget that the period immediately following Attitude was no slouch either. Sure, maybe it wasn’t as flashy,...

9 Wrestlers Who Died In 2015
WWE.com

Another year and, sadly, yet more wrestling deaths. While the rate at which professional wrestlers drop is thankfully decreasing (and they’re no longer mainly in their 30s, 40s and 50s when they do), it seems as though not a year can pass without some major industry figures kicking the bucket.

In 2014 we said goodbye to the likes of cartoon era megastar Ultimate Warrior, one of the biggest ‘what ifs?’ ever in Sean O’Haire, badass nonagenarian Mae Young, the freakish Viscera and others. Some of those deaths, like Warrior’s, happened out of the blue (two nights after a Hall of Fame induction) and truly shocked the wrestling world.

2015 saw some similarly shocking wrestling deaths, which were surprising for different reasons. There were in-ring tragedies, Hall of Famers being taken from us before their time and a hardcore cult hero who died just weeks after undergoing brain surgery.

10 Things From WWE’s Attitude Era That Need To Return
WWE.com

The Attitude Era: It’s the most fabled and nostalgia-ridden time period in the history of the WWE. It’s the era that made wrestling cool to watch again, especially for teenagers and young twenty-somethings. It’s the era of Austin vs. McMahon, of Kane vs. Undertaker, of Dx vs. The Nation, and of WWE vs. WCW.

In those few short years, the landscape of professional landscape changed from a bunch of gimmicky pseudo-wrestlers running around in clown costumes to a no-holds-barred melee of lifelike anti-heroes and epic slobberknockers.

I know that it’s easy to view the Attitude Era through rose-colored glasses, misremembering the WWE as a whole by pointing to a few awesome key scenes that remain lodged in the public consciousness. Not everything during that time was as cool as Mike Tyson joining D-Generation X (and subsequently turning on them). I understand that. Hit-and-miss was...

WWE Debate: Does Mark Henry Deserve A WWE Hall Of Fame Induction In 2016?
WWE.com

WWE Superstar Mark Henry was on a promotional appearance tour in India where he told the Times of India that his career could be nearing its conclusion: “I may retire next year. It may be the swan-song of my wrestling career; but definitely not the end of Mark Henry!”

Talk of the World’s Strongest Man retiring has been around for some time now as his career has slowly declined after a prolonged stay in the main events ran its course. Not since his interactions with John Cena in 2013 – and that fantastic hoax retirement speech on Raw – have we seen the 400-pounder booked in a position to showcase his talents. Recently, we’ve only seen Mark in less than flattering situations, jobbing to Rusev in next-to-no-time on consecutive RAWs before heading into the abyss.

2016 represents a fairytale-like scenario for the former WWE World Heavyweight Champion to retire. Henry...

10 Wtf Moments From WWE Studios
WWE Studios

At their worst, the movies from WWE Studios have a tendency to play up the weirdest parts of Vince McMahon’s fever dreams; the type of stuff that occasionally pops up on Raw when the writing staff is too tired to try to reason with someone who signed off on Mae Young giving birth to a hand.

While these occasionally horrific ideas are easily glided over in the constant grab bag of storylines that makes up WWE’s weekly episodic programming, it’s much harder to overcome these failures when they’re a major part of an actual movie.

Think of it this way: 3,000 jokes not landing over the course of The Simpsons TV show is the same as one not landing in The Simpsons Movie. It packs a bigger, more unfortunate whollop on the big screen.

And although WWE Studios is a relatively new company, with only...

7 Things You Should Know About WWE Royal Rumble 2000
WWE.com

The 2000 Royal Rumble was a big event because the biggest draw in the company, “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, was on the shelf with neck surgery. Austin was out from November 1999 to October 2000, so other people had to step up. Thankfully for WWE, they had guys like The Rock and Triple H waiting in the wings. In many ways, the 2000 Rumble was their coming out party.

This is the first Royal Rumble that took place in the “World’s Most Famous Arena” Madison Square Garden in New York City. That’s actually surprising just because WWE held so many events in Msg including some of their other PPVs, so it took them 13 Rumble events before they went to their favorite arena.

It was a time in WWE history where things were going well. They were making a lot of new money, they had a lot of new stars that...

10 Sexiest WWE Kisses That Got Your Heart Pumping
Youtube

Santino Marella & Tamina Smuka. Eve Torres & Chris Masters. Charlie Haas & Maria Kanellis. Mickie James & The Great Khali. Mark Henry & Mae Young. Randy Orton & Stephanie McMahon and Kaitlyn & Hornswoggle.

These are but a simple seven of the enormous plethora of pairs whom have locked lips for a ratings pop in their WWE careers. Sometimes for romance, sometimes for comedy, occasionally out of a genuine real-life affection, the kiss has become a recurring image in the pro-wrestling universe, so much so it’s become a bit clichéd.

There have been some absolutely awkward and pointless kisses over the years in WWE, some of which you’ll find in the opening paragraph. However, on occasion, WWE has paired two performers together on-screen with a genuine chemistry. Whether as a one-shot deal or a recurring relationship, they’ve produced a selection of kisses that were genuinely hot, leading to folks in the arena...

'WWE Raw': Ryback and Forth
Rob Van Dam in WWE Survivor Series (2002)
Watching Ryback teeter toward, and then away from, Team Authority last night was a fitting microcosm of the shell-shocking brute's past couple of years. The former Nexus member has swung unpredictably from face to heel, not to mention main-event relevance to glorified tag-team enhancement, since breaking through in 2012. Though now it appears, in lieu of the "injured" Randy Orton, WWE's ever-starved monster is stepping up as the company's unallied wild card heading into Survivor Series.

Review: WWE The Attitude Era Volume 2
After taking a stroll down memory lane with last year’s WWE Attitude Era release (reviewed here), it was only a matter of time before a second volume was released, and while WWE The Attitude Era Volume 2 is still a (mostly) pleasant look back at one of the most important and well loved eras in the WWE’s history, it does suffer from the usual volume two blues, namely that the first volume contained much of the really good stuff.

That’s not to say that Volume 2 isn’t worth your time, because it is. There is much to enjoy here, particularly as the focus is shifted from The Rock and Stone Cold Steve Austin on to some of the other important but often overlooked players that helped to make the Attitude Era what it was. The likes of Al Snow, Ken Shamrock and D-Lo Brown, names who barely get a mention these days,...

Interview With Michael Kingston: Creator Of Headlocked
Michael Kingston is a lifelong comic book and wrestling fan. In the past, various writers have attempted to create comics that mixed the two genres, but failed in spectacular fashion. In Headlocked: The Last Territory, though, Kingston creates a realistic hero in Mike Hartman who we follow on a journey in the unforgiving business. Filled with emotion and a clear passion from its writer, Headlocked is the most realistic portrayal of wrestling in the graphic novel form to date.

For his upcoming sequel Headlocked: The Last Territory Vol. 2, we follow the continuation of Hartman’s story. Kingston has taken to Kickstarter once more to raise the funds necessary to produce the book. Teaming up with him again is wrestling legend Jerry Lawler who will be providing the cover artwork. Also joining on the project in the role of guest creators are Booker T, Rob Van Dam, A.J. Styles, John Morrison,...

10 Instances Of Nudity On Pro Wrestling TV
WWE.com

Though today, WWE proudly operates under a TV-pg banner — declaring itself family entertainment appropriate for all ages – longtime fans know that’s a more recent development. Beginning in the late 1990s, WWE was a haven for the sensational and the smutty – there was more violence, more salty language, and of course, more sex.

More than just raunchy angles filled with innuendo that appealed to a demographic of high school boys, WWE broadcast actual nudity on its programming (which really appealed to high school boys). From Sable to Jacqueline to Mae Young to Willam Regal, WWE (and its imitators) sought to get people talking by breaking the last taboo of pro wrestling. More often than not, it worked.

This list – 10 instances of nudity on pro wrestling TV – contains no wardrobe malfunctions, nor does it contain any overzealous schoolboy roll ups. All of the nudity in these cases was planned...

10 Major WWE Summerslam Feuds That Flopped

WWE’s annual summertime extravaganza SummerSlam has been home to some of the greatest rivalries in WWE history. The Mega Powers and the Mega Bucks clashed at the inaugural event in 1988, bringing an end to a rivalry that started months earlier at WrestleMania IV. For every great feud that unfolded on the grand stage presented by SummerSlam, there was a feud that failed to live up to expectations. Some failed so miserably that the only way to properly describe them...

12 WWE Heels That Nobody Even Cared About
WWE.com

There are times when World Wrestling Entertainment will introduce a character that is ultimately amazing because of the wrestler’s ability in portraying the character to captivate the audience into caring about their every move. Of course, given that psychology 101 says that it’s easier to be hated than to be loved, the idea that heel characters have a far better chance of engendering derision than fan favorites have in gaining cheers makes sense. However, what happens when a character that seems to be meant to create hatred instead incites nothing more than polite jeers, or worse – complete boredom.

There are more than twelve times that WWE has introduced “bad guy” characters that fans could honestly at the end of the day care less about than WWE ideally would like fans to care about them. However, for a plethora of different reasons, these are 12 of the best examples...

Sting Rumored To Fight The Undertaker In WrestleMania 31
Legendary wrestler Sting is rumored to be signing on with WWE to wrestle in one match against The Undertaker at WrestleMania 31 in 2015.

Sting, 55, began wrestling professionally in 1985 and spent his career signed with Nwa, WCW and Tna Impact Wrestling. He was dropped when WWE accumulated WCW.

The rumor comes from notes by Dave Meltzer in the subscription required Wreslting Observer Newsletter that suggested WWE was working on bringing Sting in for the event.

“Regarding Sting, there is a working idea that he does one WWE match and then retires, which everyone presumes at this point will be with Undertaker at WresleMania 31 in Santa Clara. Whether this is made clear at Mania itself, at Raw the next day, or at some point closer to the show is unclear. Right now the only thing confirmed is the idea is Sting will do one last match [sic],” reads the note.

Pinfall - A WWE Column #006
Normal 0 false false false En-gb X-none X-none

(Stipulation - stop right here if you haven’t seen 10th March’s edition of Raw or know the outcome, as spoilers follow.)

I have to be honest, I’ve not had a huge amount of faith in WWE Creative over the last few months. After screwing Daniel Bryan out of the WWE Championship at SummerSlam way back in August last year they’ve held him back again and again, ending Pay-Per-Views with unsatisfactory conclusions and generally pissing off the WWE Universe, myself included.

When Randy Orton versus the returning Batista was announced for the headlining match at Wrestlemania XXX, my voice was among those that contributed to the groan that was heard around the world. Surely if they were going to tell the classic underdog story, then Bryan would have to somehow win the gold at the event of the year.

WWE: 10 Reasons The Miz Is Already Hall Of Fame Worthy
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/14/WWE_Champion_The_Miz_2010_Tribute_to_the_Troops.jpg

Mike Mizanin’s path to the top of World Wrestling Entertainment has been well documented – he started off as a contestant on MTV’s Real World before joining the Smackdown!-exclusive edition of Tough Enough. He landed in then-farm systems Deep South Wrestling and Ohio Valley Wrestling, but managed to work his way onto the main WWE roster after two years of toil. From there, he clawed his way to the top through skill, attitude, and hard work, winning titles and shutting the mouths of his detractors. His ascent was unheralded, but in hindsight, it was unavoidable.

Still, there are those who would malign the man or minimize his accomplishments. Such an argument is foolish, though – The Miz has already done more in his career than the vast majority of pro wrestlers will ever be able to claim.

WWE: 12 Shocking Real-Life Incidents Wrestlers Want You To Forget
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Matt_Hardy_Stronger_than_Death.jpg

In light of Matt Hardy’s January hotel room, ummm …. “scuffle” with his wife, I thought we’d take this time to look at professional wrestling’s strange relationship with the law. Occasionally people are arrested in storyline such as Stone Cold, The Undertaker and Goldberg, but in the real world, you’d have multiple counts of Grievous Bodily Harm every time there was a hardcore match. And a Public Indecency charge every time Mae Young took her clothes off, God rest her soul.

Every now and then, however, wrestlers get arrested in the very real sense of the word. Most of the time, its for drink or drugs related offences, but then there are those who have committed crimes so heinous that it stains their career forever. Here, we look at 12 times wrestlers did bad things, got caught...

WWE Raw Results & Review (20.01.14)
Welcome back to the review and results write-up of WWE Raw, apologies for not providing a review for a couple of weeks, but here we are, back as normal.

Raw opens with Triple H and Stephanie McMahon standing in the ring, they talk about the upcoming Royal Rumble PPV and the match that will take place between the WWE World Heavyweight Champion, Randy Orton, and the challenger, John Cena. Triple H begins to announce the return of a superstar but Orton instead comes out to a smattering of booes from the fans. Orton confronts Stephanie and Hunter about their poor treatment of him in recent weeks and how he should have been protected more by them and not put in matches with the likes of Cena. Triple H more or less tells Orton to “man up” and they book a rematch from last week between Orton and Kofi. For those who don’t know,...

'WWE Raw' Jan. 20: Batista returns, John Cena gets his hands on Randy Orton
Previously on: With the "Royal Rumble" closing in, Daniel Bryan shed his affiliation with the Wyatt Family and got what might be the biggest audience reaction of his career. Bryan has become the most popular guy in WWE.

The big news: Batista is back on "WWE Raw" and he knows exactly what he wants. The show opened with Randy Orton whining to The Authority in the ring, only for Batista to make his entrance. He tells Orton his goal is simple: Win the "Royal Rumble" and headline "Wrestlemania," becoming WWE World Heavyweight Championship in the process. He doesn't care who is across the ring from him.

Batista also follows up on the feud he didn't know he was in with Alberto Del Rio. After Del Rio's match with Rey Mysterio, Batista made his way to the ring once again and laid Alberto out with a spinebuster and a Batistabomb. That takes care of that.
