Mike Myers and Dana Carvey in Wayne's World (1992)
Watch: Touching Montage Pays Tribute to Romance and Dance
Mike Myers and Dana Carvey in Wayne's World (1992)
This fan-made movie montage from Scott Ewing is more than a formidable follow-up to "Evolution of Film." This time he has created "Romancing a Tribute," which seeks to celebrate the under-appreciated genres of music and dance in film. The piece covers the many decades of film, right up to an appearance from "The Lego Movie." Read More: The Trailer You Need to See Before You Die of '1001 Films You Need To See Before You Die' Bookended by Garth's drum set routine from "Wayne's World," this montage is filled end to end with clips from the most important and iconic installments in film that showcase romance and, of course, a little dancing. The last minute or so, set to "Diane Young" by Vampire Weekend, might be the minute you most enjoy today, as John Travolta, Kevin Bacon and even Elvis Presley show what they can do.  ...

This Summer’s Six Best Music Video Parties
Summer's over, guys! It's time to reminisce about all the good times that were had — all the barbecues and beach days, all the picnics and three-day weekends, all the bangin' music video parties. Everyone from Miley to 2 Chainz decided to basically host a rager in place of putting together an actual music video. We suffered major Fomo. Stave off September by watching the six best.Vampire Weekend, “Diane Young” The boys of Columbia University put on their own version of The Last Supper, which quickly turns into a raucous dinner party in which weed is smoked out of a saxophone and espresso machines are fondled. Why would Diane Young wanna change her mind about being at this thing? 2 Chainz, “Feds Watching” It’s an all-ladies (plus 2 Chainz) party at the 2 Chainz mansion. I mean, sometimes you just wanna dress up and dance with your girls, you know?...

The 5 Best Music Videos Of The Week
5) The xx “Fiction”

Directed by Young Replicant

Kicking off this week’s 5 Best Music Videos Of The Week is the latest from English indie band, The xx. There’s not an awful lot going on in “Fiction” but it’s visually stunning. The slow pace, and moody black-and-white vibe makes up for the lack of narrative. It’s pretty, stylish and engaging in a similar way Yoann Lemoine’s video for Lana Del Rey’s “Blue Jeans” is. I wouldn’t usually include a video like this but there wasn’t a lot that grabbed me this week.

4)Merchandise “Totale Nite”

Directed by Merchandise

My reasons behind including Merchandise’s “Totale Nite” is because it reminded me of Gaspar Noé’s Irréversible. It’s pretty much 8 minutes of double-exposed and eerily lit footage of the band playing, without the horrifying rape and violence of course.

3) Kool Ad “Jaleel White”

There...

Watch: Vampire Weekend's 'Diane Young' music video features Santigold, Chromeo
Vampire Weekend in Austin City Limits (1975)
I think of videos like Vampire Weekend's "Diane Young" as sharing the same vein as LCD Soundsystem's "Drunk Girls," with nothing particularly harmful, or overtly glorifying, but objectively silly, and God love 'em for it. In the single-room vid, the band sits besides dance, rock and pop brethren Santigold, Chromeo, Sky Ferreira, Despot, David Longstreth (Dirty Projectors) and others at the Indiest Last Supper Ever. Odd shenanigans like smoking a sax bong and kissing an espresso-maker ensue. Conceptually, they plot their theater around the absurd, and here, perhaps by the lyrics "out of control but you’re playing a role." The clip was directed...

Candice Glover
Candice Glover and Vampire Weekend led this week's Music Power Rankings
Candice Glover
1. Candice Glover: She becomes the 12th “American Idol” champion and the first female since 2006. We’re not sure how much the crown matters anymore, but we raise a glass anyway. 2. Daft Punk: “Random Access Memories,” which comes out May 21, could sell as much as 300,000 in its first week in the U.S., according to Billboard. That’s twice as much as its last studio album in 2005. 3. Vampire Weekend: First single “Diane Young” is shaping up to be their biggest hit yet, thanks to radio and the band’s exposure on “Saturday Night Live.” Once bitten... 4. “The Great...

New Album Is Vampire Weekend's Best Yet
Vampire Weekend in Austin City Limits (1975)
Austin, Texas -- The guys in Vampire Weekend changed how they wrote songs, how they record and what an album of theirs even looks like – the cover for "Modern Vampires of the City" is not another artsy old Polaroid, but a 1966 black-and-white photo of a smoggy New York skyline.

None of which will change some minds.

"There's certainly going to be people who listen to this album and say, `Wow, more of the same from Vampire Weekend. I knew I hated these ... college boys,'" frontman Ezra Koenig said.

Those ranks are thinning. Blowing off Vampire Weekend as smirking, preppy Ivy Leaguers too quaint and precious for their own good is a position becoming tougher to defend. Tables are turning. Now it's their eye-rolling critics who risk not being taken seriously.

"Modern Vampires of the City," the New York quartet's third album and the follow-up to the 2010 smash "Contra, is its best to date.

Saabs, Croesus, and Pre-Wars: A Glossary for the New Vampire Weekend Album
Vampire Weekend in Austin City Limits (1975)
Steve Buscemi — Vampire Weekend's spirit guide of late — said of the band's new album: “I’m listening to the lyrics and then you go ‘Peter Gabriel, too’ or, uh, ‘Louis Vuitton’ out of nowhere, and I’m lost.” Vampire Weekend uses a lot of references! And sometimes they require a little Googling. So in order to aid your listening experience, Vulture now presents a glossary of the many references on Vampire Weekend's Modern Vampires of the City.18th Hole (“Diane Young”): The final hole on a golf-course. “19th Nervous Breakdown” (“Ya Hey”): A 1966 Rolling Stones single about a tragic heroine, who is rolling in the dough but is psychologically frail. Angkor Wat (“Step”): Located in Cambodia, the Angkor Wat is one of the largest religious monuments in South Asia. Anchorage (“Step”): A city in Alaska. Famous former residents include Sarah Palin (who was a...

Vampire Weekend – Modern Vampires Of The City Review
Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

The New York quartet are back with their third album Modern Vampires of the City, a well crafted and often beautiful record that looks set to cement their position as one of the worlds biggest bands.

Vampire Weekend have come a long way since they burst onto the scene, singing songs of college to afro inspired tunes. It seems as though they took some of the criticism of their debut to heart and have worked hard to create a truly innovative and new sound that is hard not to fall for.

With a title taken from the opening line of Junior Ried’s One Blood, the group are still not shy to borrow from areas of popculture, but this album sees less referencing and is much more introverted than its older brothers. Gone are the lyrical nods to warmer climates and distance lands, this is a New York-centric piece,...

Kristen Wiig Returned To SNL Last Night…And So Did Garth And Kat
It’s barely been a year since Kristen Wiig left Saturday Night Live, but she returned last night to host the show. Expectations were high and Wiig lived up to them by bringing back her cadre of comedic characters-and by trying out some new stuff.

During her tenure at Saturday Night Live, Kristen Wiig was as popular for her over-the-top characters as she was polarizing. Wiig didn’t bring back every single character from her seven season stint, but she did reprise Gilly, “The Californians” (which has continued without her), the Target Lady, Dooneese, and Kat…

That said, the episode never really felt like a “Best of Kristen Wiig” episode, in part because she appeared in a variety of original sketches with many of the new cast members. One sketch towards the end of the night stood out in particular for being gutsy because it was so bloody:

Ben Affleck...

Saturday Night Live (1975)
'Saturday Night Live' recap: Kristen Wiig makes her return
Saturday Night Live (1975)
In hindsight, fans were bound to be disappointed. With Kristen Wiig’s eagerly anticipated return to SNL– after just a year away – many viewers were torn between wanting to see the best of her old characters and wanting to watch her expand. Unfortunately, last night we got neither. An eager Wiig brought the energy, and, especially alongside her friend Maya Rudolph, seemed to be having a great time visiting her old stomping ground, but for much of the show that enthusiasm — even during the return of characters like Dooneese — didn’t transfer to viewers at home.

The episode started with...

Watch An Entire Vampire Weekend Concert, Featuring Steve Buscemi
Vampire Weekend in Austin City Limits (1975)
Third time's the charm for Vampire Weekend, who are conducting one hell of a promotional campaign in advance of album No. 3, "Modern Vampires of the City," slated for release on May 14.

The latest move came Sunday night, when the band took to YouTube and Vevo to live-stream their entire New York City show at Roseland Ballroom. The concert was directed by Steve Buscemi and closed out the Tribeca Film Festival.

The New York-based indie-pop band performed new material from their upcoming album on Sunday, sparking additional excitement among fans. Their new songs "Obvious Bicycle" and "Everlasting Arms" follow the March 18 release of the double A-side single containing "Diane Young" and "Step." The concert came with an added social media twist: Because enough fans tweeted reactions to the American Express Unstaged-produced show using the hashtag #AmexUnstaged, the band unveiled additional behind-the-scenes footage after the concert, including a backstage performance of "White...

Steve Buscemi to direct Vampire Weekend live stream
Vampire Weekend in Austin City Limits (1975)
Steve Buscemi will direct a live stream of a Vampire Weekend concert.

The veteran actor will work with the band as part of the American Express Unstaged project.

The concert will be streamed on Vevo and YouTube.

Vampire Weekend frontman Ezra Koenig called Buscemi "a wonderful actor, a NYC legend and a great director".

Previous episodes of American Express Unstaged featured Usher, Jack White and The Killers, the latter of which was directed by Werner Herzog.

Buscemi has directed several episodes of The Sopranos, 30 Rock and Nurse Jackie, and four feature films.

Vampire Weekend bassist Chris Baio recently revealed he had discovered that Buscemi is a distant cousin of his.

The concert will be recorded at New York's Roseland Ballroom on April 28.

Watch: Steve Buscemi Sings Vampire Weekend's "Diane Young," Will Direct Webcast For The Band
Here's your unlikely actor/director and musician pairing for the day: Steve Buscemi and Vampire Weekend. It you believe a recent tweet from the band, Buscemi is a distant cousin of the bassist Chris Baio (who is actually related Scott Baio) but mostly, they were just excited to team up with with actor for some "showbiz synergy." Well, they have. The American Express Unstaged series -- which in the past has brought together Terry Gilliam and Arcade Fire, David Lynch and Duran Duran and Werner Herzog and The Killers, among others -- will now present a Vampire Weekend concert webcast directed by Buscemi. Of course, he's already an established filmmaker with a fair share of movies and TV shows under his belt, but it will be his first time doing this sort of thing. But at the very least, he appears to be a fan, recently joining the band during...

Today in "huh?": Steve Buscemi and Vampire Weekend marched in NYC's Easter Bonnet parade together
For reasons known only to them, Vampire Weekend and Steve Buscemi have been hanging out a lot lately. The band and actor marched together in this weekend’s Easter Bonnet Festival parade in New York, and then Buscemi performed part of the band’s new song “Diane Young” for a bunch of cameras on the street—much to the band’s apparent chagrin. Buscemi also shows up on the band’s Instagram feed holding up a copy of the NY Post story about the band’s Saab-burning hijinks and looking “not amused.” Vampire Weekend bassist Chris Baio claims to be ...

Steve Buscemi Joined Vampire Weekend for a Day
Steve Buscemi
Actually, this could be a long-term arrangement — we really have no idea how long Steve Buscemi plans to act as Vampire Weekend’s fifth-member-slash-mascot. But yesterday’s antics involved Steve Buscemi marching in the NYC Easter Parade with Vampire Weekend; Steve Buscemi singing the Doug breakdown of “Diane Young” while the other members looked on; Steve Buscemi posing with Chris Baio, who claims to be a distant cousin of the actor (note today's date and everything that we’ve described up until now); and Steve Buscemi looking sad next to a picture of the now-infamous burning Saabs. Random? Yes. Amusing? Sure, why not?...

Saab owners call Vampire Weekend "a bunch of dicks" for burning some old cars
Vampire Weekend has drawn the ire of the world’s most vicious automobile lovers after burning two 900-series Saabs. Some Swedish car enthusiasts are up in arms after finding out the band torched two old, but still-functioning used Saabs for its “Diane Young” promo video. While the band says it tried to purchase cheap cars with electrical problems and swears it respects the Saab brand, one Jalopnik blogger called the band “a bunch of dicks,” insisting that the cars were in good running order and that their previous owners weren’t aware of the fiery fate of their little moto-pals ...

Vampire Weekend push new album release back a week
Vampire Weekend in Austin City Limits (1975)
Fans of Vampire Weekend are going to have to wait a little bit longer for "Modern Vampires of the City." The Xl set has been moved from May 7 to May 14. The band, in the meantime, has two new songs to peruse. I like "Step" a bit better -- it's mouthy, vigilantly uppity, and a fun little outing into the world. "Diane Young," however, maybe bring in some new listeners who may only think of the NYC-based band as a bop-rock country club. Everyone can join. As previously reported, "Modern Vampires of the City" is the band's first album since...

Vampire Weekend Have Two New Songs for You
Vampire Weekend in Austin City Limits (1975)
Vampire Weekend debuted a few new songs down at South by Southwest, but if you did not make it to Austin and do not enjoy watching crappy YouTube videos of live performances, then good news: Here are some studio tracks. Try "Step" if you are looking for a down-tempo, Tenenbaum-y Monday jam; "Diane Young" is recommended for fans of loud drums and the Doug theme song. (That breakdown! It's so Doug.)
