On the original casting call for "Star Trek: the Next Generation," authored in the late months of 1986, the Enterprise's security chief was to be a Latina character named Macha Hernandez, said to be modeled after the character Vasquez (Jenette Goldstein) from James Cameron's then-recent film "Aliens." Indeed, there was a brief attempt to hire Goldstein for the role, until writer D.C. Fontana pointed out that she wasn't actually Latina. The character was renamed Tanya as a result, then eventually Tasha. The new Tasha Yar was given an intriguing backstory. She was a survivor of an ambitious Earth colony that had, through greed and mismanagement, completely collapsed. She lived among lawlessness, rampant sexual abuse, and poverty before escaping and joining Starfleet.
Denise Crosby was ultimately cast as Tasha Yar, and the show's producers gave the character a position on the bridge, ensuring that Yar would always be on camera. Crosby,...

Beef Season 2 incorporates yet another star. The announcement was made one day after Beef was confirmed to return exclusively to Netflix for a second season with a whole new cast. The latest addition to the beefy cast is none other than Youn Yuh-jung, the Academy Award-winning Korean actor known for films like Minari and the Apple TV+ series Pachinko.
A few years ago, Youn won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in 2020's Minari, the semi-autobiographical drama by Lee Isaac Chung. She was the first Korean actress to win awards from several organizations, and she would probably have won more if it hadn't been for the eligibility inconsistencies that some of those organizations have. Per Deadline, the actor joins the stellar cast announced yesterday, which includes Oscar Isaac, Cailee Spaeny, Carey Mulligan, and Charles Melton.

Patrick Stewart will always be an actor first and foremost, and his love of performance has always shined through in his numerous memorable roles. First and foremost among them is Jean-Luc Picard, stalwart defender of the Federation, first in Star Trek: The Next Generation and then later in Star Trek: Picard. That places him right in the middle of one of the franchise's quieter revolutions, as numerous cast members from The Next Generation took advantage of opportunities to step behind the director's chair.
Jonathan Frakes led the charge, and is as well-known today for his work behind the camera as in front of it. He fostered similar ambitions in his fellow cast members and subsequent Star Trek actors such as Roxanne Dawson and Robert Duncan McNeill. Stewart didn't dive quite so deeply into directing as they did, but during his tenure on The Next Generation, he helmed five episodes. All...

Colm Meaney, so loved for his work as Chief Miles O'Brien in Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, finally opened up about revisiting the iconic character. In an exclusive conversation with Comic Book Movie, Meaney shared his thoughts on returning to the Star Trek universe and the impact of the character on his career.
The role of the everyman engineer Miles O'Brien, who served on both the USS Enterprise-d and Deep Space Nine, belonged to Meaney and is, quite arguably, one of the most indelible in the Star Trek franchise. For years, O'Brien has been a favorite of fans because he was an accessible character with much development, as he moved from the background to being a main character on Deep Space Nine.

The late Patti Yasutake played Nurse Ogawa, a competent and skilled medical officer on Star Trek: The Next Generation. Ogawa was relatable and served as a loyal friend to Dr. Beverly Crusher, offering support and friendship. Ogawa's character helped pave the way for Asian women in Star Trek, showcasing representation and positive role modeling.
Nurse Alyssa Ogawa (Patti Yasutake) was one of Star Trek: The Next Generation's best recurring characters. Following the adventures of Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and the USS Enterprise-d, Tng featured numerous secondary and recurring characters beyond the main cast. While some, like John de Lancie's Q, were larger than life and impossible to forget, others nicely rounded out the Enterprise crew. Introduced in an alternate future in Star Trek: The Next Generation season 4, episode 8, "Future Imperfect," Patti Yasutake's Nurse Ogawa appeared in 16 episodes of Tng and two feature films.

Actress Patti Yasutake, best known to Trekkies as Nurse Alyssa Ogawa, died on August 5, 2024, of a rare type of T-cell lymphoma. She was 70 years old.
Nurse Ogawa first appeared on "Star Trek: The Next Generation" in the episode "Future Imperfect" more or less as a background character. She was one of Dr. Crusher's retinue of medical staff, there to give viewers the impression that the ship's sickbay was constantly bustling. She went on to star in 14 additional episodes of the show, and was usually merely standing next to Dr. Crusher (Gates McFadden), passing her tools or saying "Yes, Doctor." She had a good bedside manner, and her repeated appearances had viewers wondering who she was and what her story might be. The Bear has to be one of the best series ever created. The FX comedy-drama series is intense, funny, tragic, and has some of the most beautiful-looking food I’ve ever seen. Created by Christopher Storer, The Bear follows the story of Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto, an award-winning working in one of the best restaurants in the United States, as he moves back to Chicago to run his family-owned sandwich shop after a tragic incident. The Bear aired its third season recently, and I’m happy to say that the series is getting better with every new season. We are also happy that The Bear was renewed for a fourth season ahead of its Season 3 premiere. The Bear stars Jeremy Allen White in the lead role, with Ayo Edebiri, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Abby Elliott, Matty Matheson, Jon Bernthal, Oliver Platt, L-Boy, and Edwin Lee Gibson starring in supporting. On the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "Genesis", the eternally nervous Lieutenant Reginald Barclay (Dwight Schultz) goes to sickbay insisting he has Terellian Death Syndrome. Dr. Crusher (Gates McFadden), finding it's a mild flu, injects him with a synthetic T-cell, activating a gene that would provide him with immunities. Unwittingly, Dr. Crusher also activates every dormant gene in Barclay's body, causing ancient, pre-evolutionary "memory" genes to activate and forcing Barclay to change species. Barclay suddenly evolves into a spider. It spreads, naturally. Nurse Ogawa (Patti Yasutake) evolves into an ape. Commander Riker (Jonathan Frakes) evolves into a protohuman. Data (Brent Spiner) evolves into a 1980 Commodore Vic-20.
That last one was a little joke. Data is fine.
"Genesis" has a lot of great makeup effects (by the show's hardworking makeup technician Michael Westmore), but the premise is a little silly, even for "Star Trek." Then again, the science in...

Lee Sung Jin is ready to cook up more Beef.
Backstages at the Golden Globes on Sunday night, the hit Netflix show’s creator revealed that more seasons was always the plan, even if it has heretofore been discussed as a limited series, including tonight as it won the prize for Best Limited Series, Anthology Series, Made for Television Movie.
“We always pitched the season to buyers as an anthology series. There was always going to be new characters,” Jin explained. “Whether it stays limited or turns as an anthology or we continue existing, that’s really up to Netflix. But whatever they decide, I’m definitely ready.”
Jin went on to say that he feels “very fortunate” to be a writer. “There’s so many stories that I still want to write about,” he reflected, “so when they let me know, I’m sure you all will know, as well.

The Primetime Emmys are not necessarily known for honoring projects featuring casts that are primarily minority/people of color. The TV academy has never, for instance, given the Best Drama Series trophy to such a show. The statuette for Best Comedy Series has been won by a series featuring a largely minority cast precisely once: “The Cosby Show” in 1985. But the category of top limited/anthology/miniseries has paid golden tribute to programs with mostly minority casts a handful of times before, helping give Netflix’s “Beef” with its predominantly Asian American lineup a genuine shot to take home the biggest prize.

All season long, the Emmy race for Best Movie/Limited Supporting Actress has been a battle between two front-runners: Niecy Nash-Betts (“Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story”) and Claire Danes (“Fleishman Is in Trouble”). Can anyone stop them from winning the trophy? Based on the combined odds at Gold Derby, the rest of the category is likely to be a mix of actresses from popular series like Maria Bello and Ashley Park (“Beef”), and beloved favorites from series not as much on the radar like Olivia Colman (“Great Expectations”) and Cherry Jones (“Five Days At Memorial”). But it’s still anyone’s game.

“Beef” is shaping up to have a great year at this year’s Emmys. The searing, sizzling, sensational Netflix limited series is predicted to be nominated for at least five Emmys, according to our odds chart, but it could earn a whole lot more than that if key supporting players such as Joseph Lee get caught up in the sweep.
“Beef” follows Steven Yeun as Danny Cho and Ali Wong as Amy Lau — two people involved in an incident of road rage that they just can’t let go of. Over the course of the 10-episode series, the two get caught up in a deadly game of one-upmanship as they try to seek revenge and wreak havoc on each other’s lives, dragging themselves and those around them down along the way. One of those people is Lee’s George Nakai, Amy’s stay-at-home husband.

The subsequent two episodes of the miniseries followed suit at No. 4 and No. 7 on the charts, with the premiere episode driving audiences to continue watching.
Featuring a predominantly Asian-American cast, with Ali Wong and Steven Yeun in leading roles, “Beef” generated strong viewership with Asian households overindexing by double digits (13%) compared to the national average for the week of April 5-11. The Netflix series “Beef” is being hailed as one of the best TV shows of 2023 so far, with standout performances in particular from stars Ali Wong and Steven Yeun. Lee Sung Jin, the creator and showrunner of Netflix’s “Beef,” first worked with Steven Yeun and Ali Wong on the animated series “Tuca & Bertie.” But their latest collaboration sees the three reunite to craft a Netflix show along an A24 sensibility. “Beef,” which dropped on the streaming service on Apr. 6, traces the intersecting lives of Yeun’s Danny and Wong’s Amy after the two engage in a vitriolic road rage incident that sets both on a collision course to chaos. “Amy and Danny may differ in gender, class and career path, but they share a self-destructive nihilism that each seems to recognize in the other, even if they can’t articulate it,” writes Variety TV critic Alison Herman.

“What the fuck is happening?”
That was Steven Yeun’s reaction while shooting the cataclysmic climax of “Beef,” which he leads with Ali Wong. The Netflix and A24 dramedy opens plausibly enough with a road-rage scene between Wong’s Amy, an entrepreneur whose easygoing nature masks secret desires, and Yeun’s Danny, a contractor who goes to extremes to obtain what he wants. But that initial conflict drives both to exact bizarre acts of revenge on each other, revealing the darkest corners of their psyches. The result? Chaos. In one scene, Amy masturbates with a gun; in another, Danny urinates all over her bathroom — and that’s just the beginning. Seeded throughout are quiet explorations of the characters’ anger, loneliness and fear.
“Both assume incorrectly that they cannot show their true selves to anyone in their lives,” says Lee Sung Jin, the creator and showrunner of “Beef,” which premieres on...

Inspired by a real-life conflict experienced by creator Lee Sung Jin, “Beef” follows the escalation of a road rage incident between wealthy entrepreneur Amy (Ali Wong) and failing contractor Danny (Steven Yeun), as the pair sets their minds on tearing each other’s lives apart.
Despite the far-fetched amplification of their feud, which begins to implicate Amy and Danny’s families in their subsequent revenge plots, the Netflix comedy series touches on a deeply human sentiment: Amy and Danny are done hiding their true feelings.
“They’re both just really fed up — they’re really fed up and overwhelmed,” Wong told TheWrap, adding that their characters share repressed shame and anger. “It’s just at their threshold point … Sometimes when you see people … they’ve come down from being overwhelmed, but they’re just both like right here, it’s like ripe.”

A cynic might argue that there's an all-too-recognizable formula for popular television shows these days. Spicy premises starring damaged characters with very few likable traits, copious amounts of sex and cheating and violence, and F-bombs galore all feel like time-honored shock tactics to coax jaded, spectacle-starved audiences into uniting around a particular water-cooler show. For every "Succession" or "Yellowjackets," it always seems as if immensely popular shows like "Euphoria" remind us that edginess sells above all else.
"Beef," the latest television project from A24 and Netflix (two studios that certainly know their way around sensationalist productions), won't immediately dispel those surface-level criticisms. The inciting action unfolds after the pettiest of road rage incidents. Co-leads Steven Yeun and Ali Wong curse up a storm in clip-ready segments that seem destined to go viral on social media. The more one watches these characters go about their daily lives, the less there are to root for.

If you’ve ever been in a crowded parking lot, you’ll surely recognize the inciting incident in Netflix’s Beef: A truck nearly backs into an SUV, which honks extravagantly before speeding off. Maybe you’ll even relate to the impulse to do what the cars do next, even if you’ve never done it yourself: The truck chases the SUV down with the reckless abandon of a Fast & Furious racer, skidding into oncoming traffic and barreling over suburban lawns.
But Amy (Ali Wong) and Danny (Steven Yeun), the dueling leads of Beef, take things further still. The encounter precipitates an endless cycle of revenge, during which they deface each other’s property, sabotage each other’s careers, undermine each other’s families. It’s a hilarious premise on its face, and the half-hours fly by as wild twists twists pile up. What’s less expected, however...

The 10-episode series follows the aftermath of a road rage incident between two strangers. The increasing stakes of their feud unravel their lives and relationships in the course of the series.

Recurring cast includes Maria Bello, Ashley Park, Justin H. Min, Mia Serafino, Remy Holt, Andrew Santino, and Rek Lee.

Imagine you're having the worst day of your life, drowning in a seemingly never-ending flood of all the most infuriating moments that everyday life has in store for us. You're barely holding it together, plastering a fake smile on your face through it all, and threatening to come apart at the seams at any moment ... and then you nearly get into a car accident in a parking lot with precisely the wrong person. That's the bizarrely mundane premise that kickstarts the action in the joint Netflix and A24 production "Beef," a new television series that sure looks like it needs to be seen to be believed.
Starring Steven Yeun and Ali Wong, the story certainly looks like it takes the phenomenon of road rage incidents and uses it as a jumping-off point to explore some of the darkest aspects of ourselves in as wry and humorous a way as possible.

For a while, all we really knew about the plot of Netflix’s dark comedy series “Beef” was that it followed two strangers who could not let a road rage incident go. Now the trailer is out, and it turns out that that simple plot description pretty much sums it up.
In the trailer, we see the incident – struggling contractor Danny Cho (Steven Yeun) almost backs into wealthy entrepreneur Amy Lau (Ali Wong) in a parking lot, and Amy overreacts – and then the escalation. It starts with a car chase. Then it turns into finding out who each other is. Then it turns into psychological warfare involving Danny peeing on a rug in Amy’s bathroom and Amy threatening him on social media by pointing a handgun at her phone. Their feud takes over their lives, and there will be consequences for them and their families.

"I have a very full life that I'd love to get back to... I'm gonna find you and take what little you have." Netflix has revealed an official trailer for a dark comedy revenge series titled Beef, created by TV producer / writer Lee Sung Jin. This looks like amusing, dark, twisted madness! I'm so in. Two people who let a road rage incident burrow into their minds and slowly consume their every thought and action. Hence the title about the "beef" between them. Steven Yeun and Ali Wong co-star as Danny and Amy. The cast includes Joseph Lee, Young Mazino, David Choe, Patti Yasutake, Maria Bello, Ashley Park, Justin H. Min, Mia Serafino, and Remy Holt. This is an A24 Television production, if you need any more reason to consider this. This looks kind of genius? And definitely a "of the moment" series about how things are these days, with...
