Rick Hurst Dies: ‘Dukes of Hazzard’ & ‘Steel Magnolias’ Actor Was 79
Image
Rick Hurst, the actor known for playing Deputy Cletus Hogg on The Dukes of Hazzard, has died. He was 79.

According to the actor’s wife Candace Kaniecki, he died unexpectedly on Thursday in Los Angeles, TMZ reported. His cause of death was not immediately disclosed.

Hurst’s co-star Ben Jones, who played Cooter Davenport on the 1979-’85 CBS sitcom, announced his death on Facebook after Hurst was scheduled to appear at Cooter’s Place in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee next month.

“It doesn’t seem right that Rick Hurst passed away this afternoon. When something so unexpected happens, it is ‘harder to process,’ as the current expression goes,” he said in a statement. “I have known Rick for over 45 years and there wasn’t a minute of that time that he didn’t leave me smiling or laughing. Sure he was a professional comedian, but mostly he just had a heart as big as Texas.

Hurst’s death was announced by the Cooter’s Place museum in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. He had just canceled a scheduled July 3-7 appearance there.

“To fans, he was more than a character — he was family,” reads a Dukes of Hazzard post on Instagram. “His gentle smile, impeccable comedic timing and kind-hearted spirit made every scene brighter.

“Offscreen, Rick was known for his generosity, humility and love for connecting with fans at events across the country. Whether it was a reunion special or a meet-and-greet at Cooter’s, he never stopped sharing his joy with the people who adored him.”

Five Sitcoms That Replaced A Character With Pretty Much the Exact Same Character
Image
When Roseanne Barr was fired from the rebooted Roseanne in 2018, the producers decided that, in order to continue, the series would need to change. Instead of the sarcastic loudmouth Roseanne Conner as the center of her family, John Goodman’s Dan Conner, Laurie Metcalf’s Jackie Harris and Sara Gilbert’s Darlene Conner stepped in to fill the void, making it a show with a bit less attitude and an increased focus on grief in light of Barr’s character’s death. These changes allowed the show — now rebranded as The Conners — to last for seven seasons.

However, not all shows are smart enough to fully pivot after a cast departure. Instead, many just end up replacing that person with a new character who has pretty much the exact same personality. The hope, presumably, is to keep whatever dynamics a show already possesses.

Here are some of the best — and worst — examples…...

Bernadette Peters could break a Tonys record with a nomination for ‘Stephen Sondheim’s Old Friends’
Image
Bernadette Peters has long been heralded as one of legendary composer Stephen Sondheim’s greatest interpreters. The actress originated roles in Sunday in the Park With George and Into the Woods and starred in revivals of Gypsy, A Little Night Music, and Follies. Now, three years after Sondheim’s death, Peters has returned to Broadway to pay tribute to her long-time collaborator and friend in the revue Stephen Sondheim’s Old Friends. If she receives recognition from the Tony Awards for her efforts, she could make history in the Best Featured Actress in a Musical category.

Peters earned her first Tony nomination in 1972 in Featured Actress for On the Town, which was her sixth Broadway production. She has received six additional nominations for Mack & Mabel, Sunday in the Park With George, Song and Dance, The Goodbye Girl, Annie Get Your Gun, and Gypsy — winning for Song and Dance and Annie Get Your Gun...

The 5 Best Chuck Lorre TV Shows, Ranked
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

When it comes to modern television, few names are as powerful or profitable as Chuck Lorre. For the past few decades, Lorre has written for, produced, and created several hit television series that have not only helped shape the landscape of primetime network sitcoms but often set the trend for comedy TV moving forward. By and large, Lorre's shows either feature relatable, everyday people in extraordinary situations or find the relatable human elements ignored when focusing on extraordinary people.

Having earned his stripes as a TV writer on shows like "Charles in Charge" and "My Two Dads," Lorre has been a staple of the industry for over 40 years. He's proven time and again that he understands the key to finding commercial success, despite the many valid criticisms of his reliance on formulaic humor. Hence, we're here to highlight the five best Chuck Lorre shows,...

The Weirdest Storylines in Smallville
Image
Smallville adapts Golden Age Superman and Superboy comics for a modern audience, showing the Man of Steel's upbringing in Smallville, Kansas, and his journey to becoming an icon. The town is plagued by disgruntled citizens imbued with powers from Kryptonian radiation, and it's usually up to Clark and his friends to save the day.

Golden Age Superman stories were notoriously weird, and Smallville perfectly captures that weirdness, balancing the interpersonal relationships of teenagers with world-ending threats. There are two kinds of weirdness: good weirdness comes when storylines start to explore goofy concepts like those from the original comics, while bad weirdness comes from beloved characters thrust into uncomfortable situations. Smallville tries to lean into good weirdness, but sometimes the bad kind seeps through.

Update: 2024/10/23 18:35 Est By Brian Cronin

I've updated this fun list by Jack Gaul to spotlight five more particularly weird storylines from Smallville, a show that...

The Only Major Actors Still Alive From The Dukes Of Hazzard
Image
"The Dukes of Hazzard" was one of the biggest shows in the '70s, but where are the actors now? Did they all live to see old age? Sadly many of the show's main stars have since passed on, but their memory lives on in the timeless television series. The series centered around Bo and Luke Duke, played by John Schneider and Tom Wopat. They delivered vigilante justice for their county, protecting it from the corrupt political power-player, Boss Hogg. They are saddled with trying to save the Duke family farm from Hogg's grasp, which forces them to devise get-rich-quick schemes and lands them in various hijinks.

Many of the supporting actors were already middle-aged when the series aired, so sadly, Denver Pyle who played Jesse Duke, James Best who played Sheriff Rosco P. Coltrane, Sorrell Booke who played Boss Hog, and Waylon Jennings who played The Balladeer have all since passed.

The Dukes of Hazzard Stars Reunite, Tease Potential Reboot
Image
The stars of The Dukes of Hazzard haven't shut the door on the television series getting rebooted.

Originally airing for seven seasons on CBS between 1979 and 1985, The Dukes of Hazzard followed the Duke family, which included cousins Bo (John Schneider), Luke (Tom Wopat), and Daisy (Catherine Bach). All three reunited with fellow cast members Byron Cherry (Coy Duke), Jeff Altman (Hughie Hogg), and Rick Hurst (Deputy Cletus Hogg) for a recent appearance at Gallatin Comic-Con in Tennessee. Per Fox, Bach addressed how much love the cast members still have for one another, adding that a potential reboot or even a reunion special is possible.

‘Dukes Of Hazzard’ Stars Reunite, Tease Potential Reboot Of Hit ’80s TV Series
Image
Never say never. Former Dukes of Hazzard stars John Schneider, Catherine Bach and Tom Wopat reunited with fellow castmates Byron Cherry, Jeff Altman and Rick Hurst at Gallatin Comic Con 2023 in Tennessee recently where talk of a possible reboot of the hit ’80s TV comedy series surfaced.

“As far as a Dukes reunion,” Bach teased in an interview with Fox News Digital, “anything is possible.”

Bach starred as Daisy Duke, Schneider as Bo Duke and Wopat as Luke Duke in the hit action-comedy-drama series that aired for seven seasons on CBS from 1979 to 1985. The series, inspired by the 1975 film Moonrunners about a bootlegger family, revolved around the adventures of cousins Bo and Luke, modern-day Robin Hoods who continually tried to outwit a corrupt sheriff and “greedy rich, city slickers.”

The series also was not without controversy due to images of the Confederate flag that had been used in the show.

Brian d’Arcy James (‘Into the Woods’) hoping to break decades-old Tonys curse
Image
You wish to have the curse reversed? You’ll need to win a Tony first! Brian d’Arcy James gave an impressive performance as the Baker in the recent revival of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s “Into the Woods.” Despite an impressive stage career, James has never won a Tony Award. That could all change thanks to one of the biggest hits of the 2022-23 Broadway season, and he would break a major Tony stat in the process.

James has amassed a whopping 15 Broadway credits over the course of his career, including “Into the Woods.” He scored his first Tony nomination for the musical “Sweet Smell of Success” in 2002 before picking up additional bids as the titular ogre in “Shrek the Musical” (2010) and for the farce “Something Rotten!” (2015).

The actor also had a hand in shaping characters from two Pulitzer Prize and Tony-winning musicals. He originated the roles of Dan...

‘Dukes of Hazzard’ Stars Defend Show’s Confederate Flag Use: ‘The Car Is Innocent’
John Schneider at an event for Nip/Tuck (2003)
The original stars of CBS’s popular series “Dukes of Hazzard” are speaking their mind about the recently renewed criticism of the show’s use of the Confederate flag.

John Schneider and Tom Wopat, who played Bo and Luke Duke in the series which ran from 1979 to 1985, addressed the controversial symbol of the Confederacy that is painted atop the show’s famous car, a Dodge Charger nicknamed the General Lee.

“I have never had an African American come up to me and have any problem with it whatsoever,” Schneider, 60, said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “The whole politically correct generation has gotten way out of hand.”

'Dukes of Hazzard' Stars John Schneider and Tom Wopat Respond to Renewed Controversy Over Car's Confederate Flag
Catherine Bach, Ben Jones, Denver Pyle, John Schneider, and Tom Wopat in Shérif, fais-moi peur! (1979)
For a family show about two good old boys, The Dukes of Hazzard has seen its share of controversy.

Before it even premiered on CBS on Jan. 26, 1979, then-cbs programming chief B. Donald Grant squared off with a roomful of TV critics who hated it. Among their objections was that "the two male leads appear to be on the wrong side of the law, that the subject of illegitimate parenthood was treated humorously, and that one of the female regulars is often seen in skimpy costume," according to a Hollywood Reporter account. One North Carolina critic went further,...

Blacklist (2013)
The Blacklist Season 7 Episode 18 Review: Roy Cain
Blacklist (2013)
Dembe got saved from making the hard choice once again.

He did actually choose on The Blacklist Season 7 Episode 18.

Red's timely intervention just stopped Dembe from having to follow through.

Yes, after a side trip with the Ressler Brothers to Detroit on The Blacklist Season 7 Episode 17, it was a return to the Raymond-Liz-Katarina triangle on this 150th episode.

And, as often happens, poor, loyal Dembe got caught right in the middle of everything.

He really deserves better. He's too righteous a man to keep protecting someone such as Raymond.

Perhaps he's insane, saving Red over and over and expecting him to change.

It was a disappointment that Raymond's medical condition got glossed over at the beginning after his dramatic collapse at the end of The Blacklist Season 7 Episode 16.

His fainting, following by the doctor's warning, did have an effect.

But instead of him changing his lifestyle, Red chose to accelerate his succession plans.

Pros

Schneider has been a fixture on the small screen since he was 17 years old when he won the role of Bo Duke on the hit CBS series, “The Dukes of Hazzard” (1979-1985), which made both him and co-star Tom Wopat household names. ‘Baywatch’ Origin Story: How One Lifeguard Turned His Dream Into A Hassle That Paid Hoff
Pamela Anderson, Yasmine Bleeth, Alexandra Paul, David Hasselhoff, David Chokachi, Gena Lee Nolin, and Jaason Simmons in Alerte à Malibu (1989)
Gregory Bonann was a lifeguard at Will Rogers State Beach in 1977 when he helped two children who were caught in a riptide. That rescue would ultimately change his life – and the face of television, setting the stage for the eventual “Baywatch” juggernaut.

Now, with the new feature adaptation of “Baywatch” in theaters this weekend, it’s time to revisit the unusual story of how the lifeguard show made it on the air – ultimately producing 242 episodes before ending its run in 2001.

It all started because it turns out Bonnan had saved the children of Stu Erwin, an executive at Mtm – the independent production company behind series like “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” and “The Bob Newhart Show,” and run by legendary exec Grant Tinker.

While visiting Mtm’s offices in Studio City, Bonann pitched Erwin on a drama about lifeguards. The company passed, but Bonann took the opportunity to learn all about the TV biz.
