Doctor Who's Agatha Christie Episode Was Inspired By A Bizarre True Story
Image
Even if you're a "Doctor Who" fan with just a passing knowledge of the show's massive, six-decade-plus history on the BBC, you probably know that the cult fave has some procedural aspects built in, no matter who the current Doctor is or which person is overseeing the show at a given time. In the modern era of the Doctor, there can be a season-long arc of sorts, such as the Bad Wolf arc of the first modern season with Christopher Eccleston or when the Master became Missy for Peter Capaldi. But within that arc, there tend to be episodes that take place in the far future as well as episodes in which the Doctor inevitably meddles with their latest companion's home life. And there's almost always at least one episode set in a specific past era of British history, enabling the Doctor to encounter real-life figures like Winston Churchill, Queen Elizabeth,...

Doctor Who's Spooky Agatha Christie Tribute Also Tied Up A Long-Standing Plot Thread
Image
The fun thing about being a time traveler is that you can often procrastinate on important tasks for as long as you'd like. This was part of the appeal for Amy (Karen Gillan) at the start of "Doctor Who" season 5; she was having second thoughts about marrying Rory the next day, so the Doctor's promise that she could travel through space and time for as long as she wants beforehand seemed like a great deal.

The rest of the season eventually dealt with Amy's doubts about Rory, but it once again ended with the characters procrastinating. This time, it was the Doctor who took his sweet time getting around to an important task: in the finale, he receives a phone call (seemingly from the future queen or king of England) regarding an emergency situation. In the future there's apparently a train that runs in space called the Orient Express, and...

The film follows two determined fathers who engage in a comical battle to enroll their kids in an elite preschool, escalating into an absurd competition with unexpected results. Production is under way in London.

“As a father of two boys, I immediately connected to this story for both its hard-hitting comedy and its relatability,” Duhamel said in a statement. “Anyone with kids will relate to the lengths a parent will go for their children, and in this case these two dads take it to the extreme. ‘Secret Level’ Review: An IP Branding Exercise
Image
The aims of the animated anthology Secret Level, whose 15 shorts are based on video and tabletop games, are clear enough: As production company Blur Studio puts it on their website, “Secret Level is our love letter to gaming.” But despite the tangible earnestness of that claim, the series fails to shake off the cynicism of its commercial function and blinkered politics. Beneath flashes of beauty and fits of inspiration lies an elaborate branding exercise.

Secret Level features a handful of shorts that conjure impressive moods. The bleak industrial landscapes in “Armored Core: Asset Management” all but subsume the episode’s protagonist (Keanu Reeves)—and the formidable mech he pilots—conveying the extent of his alienation and the stakes of his mission; the economical “Warhammer 40,000: And They Shall Know No Fear” spares us unnecessary dialogue, setting its space marines loose with sweltering kineticism; and the martial arts revenge tale of...

10 Best British Spy TV Shows
Image
Britain's television landscape has often been linked with gritty characters, compelling storylines, and complex dramas, with no genre embodying those traits quite like an iconic British spy series. The British fiction's fascination with spies and espionage can be traced back to Ian Fleming's iconic James Bond character from 1953, which garnered worldwide attention and acclaim. Though other countries produce quality works in the genre, the British versions tend to have a biting dialogue mixed with intricate, layered narratives that create some of the most intense, thrilling shows of all time.

Uniquely British spy series from older generations, such as Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, shows the complexity of the genre and the underlying tension and psychological pressures that agents must endure on their missions. Modern series like the beloved Killing Eve show a different layer to the genre, with a more quirky and comical tone that is still punctuated with moments...
