When one starts watching Adult Swim’s Common Side Effects, it’s easy to feel confused about exactly what it is. Is it a comedy? A thriller? A drama? A sci-fi epic? A bizarre drug trip?
After a while, though, it becomes clear that the answer to all those questions is the same one. Just as it is for the question of whether this is one of the best new shows of the year:
Damn right it is.

Spoiler Alert !!!Spoilers ahead for The Last of Us season 2
The Last of Us season 2 started with a devastating blow to fans with one of the deuteragonists’ deaths and the infected horde battle at Jackson. Pedro Pascal’s short-lived tenure in this season was not something fans of the show were ready for, and fans of the game were frankly surprised his death happened so early.
After Pascal’s character Joel died, it’s pretty evident that the show has the potential to take a darker path, and it has, to a certain extent. The one thing that is putting both the show and its protagonist, Ellie, into complete darkness is Dina. Isabela Merced’s performance as Dina, especially in the latest episode as the two finally share an incredibly intimate moment, has been the heart of this season.

When Young Mazino heard there was a role for him in “The Last of Us” Season 2, the beloved “Beef” actor “ran to a GameStop, bought a used PS4, and played through the game” immediately. Mazino told IndieWire he was already a fan of HBO’s TV adaptation thanks to its Emmy-winning first season, but that studying the source material felt essential before meeting with series co-creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann. If only someone had told him, they didn’t want their actors playing the game.
“It was important for Craig [Mazin as showrunner] to understand the game fully,” said Druckmann to IndieWire. “With our actors, what we told them — and they often would not listen to us — we asked them, ‘Don’t play the game.’ Because the games have performances that are brilliant as far as I’m concerned.”

Spoiler Alert! This post contains details from Season 2, Episode 4 of HBO’s The Last Of Us.
Ellie and Dina’s slow burn finally ignites in Sunday night’s episode of The Last of Us.
The pair spend most of their first day in Seattle exploring the city and trying to figure out the best way to find Abby while also piecing together clues about the complicated conflict between the Wlf and the Seraphites. They notice a Wlf call sign on the radio station satellite and decide to start their search for Abby there, but it’s not long before things go awry.
Inside the radio station, they find the disemboweled bodies of several Wlf soldiers hanging from the ceiling. They’re barely able to realize that this was done by the Seraphites when another wave of Wlf soldiers flood the room. They manage to escape the radio station (having killed...

Everyone loves a good family sitcom, right? A feel-good premise, likable characters, and strong humor to balance it all out. Arguably, the biggest family comedy on TV today is Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage. That makes sense, as it's set in the immensely popular Big Bang Theory-universe. But if you're looking for a more underrated family comedy to binge, put this early 2010s Fox sitcom on your radar.
Raising Hope ran for four seasons on Fox from 2010 to 2014. It followed a young, single father trying his best to raise his baby daughter with the help of his family. The Chance family was your average lower middle class bunch just trying their best to get by in day-to-day life. Are they the most stable group of characters? Well, not exactly. But they do love each other,...

Lost is a show that starts with a lot of promises, but over the years, the plot keeps getting more complicated. Unanswered questions lead to more unanswered questions until no one remembers what they were asking in the first place. Lost gets lost in the way, and the series finishes in such a way that confuses viewers even more.
Lost's finale has the haunting effect of leaving viewers thinking about it for days and even weeks after. The last season opens a black box by showing two timelines: one that takes place as planned, and the other that shows what would happen if they never crashed. Many viewers are confused about what the ending really means and the point of everything. Similarly, many shows wrap up in a way that's deeply haunting.
Westworld's Season 4 Finale Leaves Viewers Confused
Similar to Lost, the HBO sci-fi drama Westworld created its own rabbit hole.

One of popular culture's most beloved and influential genres, sci-fi has produced a number of the best television shows of all time. Dealing with futuristic and imaginative concepts in the vein of time travel, extra-terrestrial life, or artificial intelligence gone rogue, the best sci-fi shows leverage other genres in the vein of drama, horror, or comedy to produce a layered offering that makes use of a unique theoretical premise. From violent science fiction shows laden with gore to underappreciated hidden treasures, there's something for every brand of fan out there.
However, while a compelling central premise is as good a start as a show could hope for, maintaining consistent success across multiple seasons is another matter altogether. For every science fiction television show that has produced a consistent level of excellence across multiple installments, there are two genre offerings that fell off in terms of quality after a promising first season.

Hollywood star Andrew Garfield seems to be treading a similar path to that of action star Tom Cruise—not in terms of his career, but rather regarding his romantic life. Known for his acclaimed on-screen performances in films like The Amazing Spider-Man, Tick, Tick… Boom! and most recently in We Live in Time, the actor’s love life has taken center stage after a recent breakup with Dr. Kate Tomas.

Although some shows can truly stick the landing and produce stellar second seasons, Season 2 is often the worst era for many TV shows. This was because the initial challenges of the first season have often been overcome, and its in Season 2 that a series has to really justify its existence and showcase it had the staying power to tell an ongoing story over the course of years. While shows can sometimes recover from lackluster second seasons, for others, it signaled the beginning of the end and its slow decline into irrelevance.
Some of the most popular TV shows of all time suffered from poor second seasons as they struggled to continue their narrative in a way that felt urgent and engaging. This was the case for comedies, dramas, sci-fi, and zombie shows that had excellent first seasons and failed to live up to their potential in their second outing. While...

Director Fede Álvarez was inspired playing “The Last of Us Part II” while working on “Alien: Romulus.” The storyline of the Dina character, voiced by Shannon Woodward in the game, being pregnant inspired him to make Isabela Merced’s character pregnant in the film. In an uncanny bit of prescience, now Merced is playing the video game character in Season 2 of the HBO television show.

Just a few hours into their strike against the major video game companies, SAG-AFTRA made some noise at San Diego Comic-Con by speaking about the “existential threat” of artificial intelligence, which they say has been holding up a new deal for nearly two years.
At a convention panel Friday morning, Ashly Burch, Noshir Dalal, Sarah Elmaleh and Shannon Woodward received a resounding round of applause from fans as they discussed the work stoppage (and sported SAG-AFTRA strike shirts).

Isabela Merced has joined the cast of HBO‘s The Last of Us. She is the last of three major additions for the upcoming second season of the post-apocalyptic drama based on the video game of the same name developed by Naughty Dog for PlayStation. The other two are recently cast Kaitlyn Dever as Abby and Young Mazino as Jesse.
Merced will play Dina, Ellie’s new romantic interest and Jesse’s ex. Dina is a free-wheeling spirit whose devotion to Ellie will be tested by the brutality of the world they inhabit.
“Dina is warm, brilliant, wild, funny, moral, dangerous and instantly lovable,” said Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, The Last of Us‘ co-creators, writers, executive producers and directors. “You can search forever for an actor who effortlessly embodies all of those things, or you can find Isabela Merced right away. We couldn’t be prouder to have her join our family.

Some of the best romances are unconventional ones between two artsy or peculiar people. TV characters who are their full authentic selves can be a bit eccentric. However, that means that they attract and keep people around them who truly understand and appreciate them.
Sitcoms and tongue-in-cheek dark fantasy TV shows are great settings for exploring odd characters. From strange royals loosely inspired by history to surprisingly altruistic civil servants, there is a match for every person. Sometimes two people with completely disparate personalities shock audiences when they get together, but they somehow make sense and excellent writing ultimately sells the romantic pairing.

Scott Pilgrim is back, but not in the way anyone expected. The new Netflix animated series “Scott Pilgrim Takes Off” is both a continuation of the “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” story and a complete recontextualization of what transpired, twisting and morphing the source material into something completely new. And who better to do it than the author responsible for creating “Scott Pilgrim” in the first place?
The anime “Scott Pilgrim Takes Off” is created by Bryan Lee O’Malley and BenDavid Grabinski, and while it begins similarly to “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World,” a shocking twist at the end of Episode 1 soon takes this story in a different direction.
Edgar Wright, who co-wrote and directed the 2010 film adaptation “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World,” is involved in this new series as an executive producer and he also helped bring a big piece of the puzzle together: the cast.

Spoilers ahead for the ending of The Last of Us Part II and the potential future storylines in HBO's The Last of Us. In order to succeed as a TV series, HBO's The Last of Us season 2 needs to make one big change to the second game's ending. As is the case with the first game, Joel (Pedro Pascal) slaughters everyone in the facility and leaves with Ellie (Bella Ramsey) after realizing that the Fireflies' doctors will kill an unconscious Ellie in order to make the cure. Unable to lose another kid, Joel puts Ellie above all else, though his actions also take away Ellie's ability to choose a fate. Instead of being honest, Joel lies to Ellie, though he does confess his actions to his brother, Tommy, in The Last of Us Part II's opening.

Plot: Billie is plagued by blackouts and strange visions that lead her to discover she’s stuck in a series of time loops, possibly related to her mysterious new girlfriend.
Review: Dementia is one of the scariest things I can think of. Losing the ability to access your own memories and being unable to recognize your loved ones is downright awful. So I was really interested when they brought up the concept and seemed like that would be the main idea at play Jagged Mind. I feel silly being so wrong. What starts as an interesting idea with our lead Billy seeing her death over and over, unable to properly comprehend time, swiftly devolves into a near Lifetime movie. Or maybe that was just the lighting.
Knowing that this started as a short film, First Date, (as part of Hulu’s Bite Size Halloween) I can see elements that carried over here.

Director Kelley Kali's mind-bending psychological thriller Jagged Mind, which premieres this week on Hulu, explores toxic relationships with a queer twist. The film, written by Allyson Morgan, also provides an entertaining story of magic and obsession that follows Billie (Maisie Richardson-Sellers), a twenty-something-year-old woman in New Orleans who suffers from strange blackouts after meeting her new girlfriend, Alex (Shannon Woodward). Soon, Billie realizes that she is reliving moments of her relationship with Alex, and finds herself stuck in a time loop that she has to fight to escape.
Kelley Kali sat down with Cbr for an exclusive chat regarding her new romantic thriller. Kali opened up about first reading the script and what the film says about queer relationships. The acclaimed filmmaker also provides a note for artists on intention.

Hollywood may have just come full circle.
The 1980s and 1990s saw a boom in the erotic thriller genre — movies revolving around hypersexual situations, often featuring protagonists falling in love with a potential killer. Jagged Mind, the new film by director Kelley Kali, feels like a rebuttal to one of the most iconic erotic thrillers of the 1990s, Basic Instinct. That movie still endures criticism for its portrayal of a bisexual temptress, one unafraid to murder male lovers, and whose relationship with another woman seems designed to taunt men. Jagged Mind doesn’t have the audacity of that film, but it does have one overflowing attribute: it’s a damn sexy movie.
But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Jagged Mind follows Billy (Maisie Richardson-Sellers), a beautiful young woman with a nasty habit of hooking up with her ex-girlfriend, and suffering from symptoms of early-onset dementia. She takes immediate...

Exclusive Jagged Mind Clip Delivers the Chilling Message Behind Hulu’s Latest Psychological Thriller
Hulu is celebrating Pride Month with its new queer psychological horror thriller Jagged Mind, which is now available to watch on the streaming platform. The film is directed by Kelley Kali (Thanks for Asking) and stars Maisie Richardson-Sellers and Shannon Woodward.
The story centers on a woman who suffers strange visions that form a larger puzzle, since she is actually trapped in a time loop, and everything seems to be related to her new girlfriend. As the story unfolds, she'll need to put the pieces together inside her head to try and figure out what's going on, as the latest clip from the film teases:
Maisie Richardson-Sellers was one of the big stars of the canceled Arrowverse series DC's Legends of Tomorrow, where she played various characters within the team, the most popular being Vixen/Amaya Jiwen. In addition, she was part of the cast of The Originals, another popular show of the network,...

Kelley Kali’s Jagged Mind is a unique kind of erotic thriller. Not only does the film focus on a lesbian couple, Kali and writer Allyson Morgan broach a subject rarely seen in queer cinema: domestic abuse. The film approaches its weighty topic with urgency and graveness, but the distinct genre elements make everything more digestible.
Much like its basis, Morgan’s short film First Date, Jagged Mind shows the lengths some people will go to to be with the person they love. Or more accurately, the person they are obsessed with. Unlike other thrillers, though, this one features a time loop. The audience is thrown in head first as the main character, Billie (played by Maisie Richardson-Sellers), almost immediately experiences another blackout. Billie is clueless apart from a troubling sense of déjà vu, however viewers will quickly figure out what (or who) is behind this strange malady.

Director Kelley Kali doesn’t just tear down barriers. She torches them.
The filmmaker, known for her movies The Adventures of Thomasina Sawyer and I’m Fine (Thanks for Asking), now wades into uncharted territory. Her latest outing, the Hulu film Jagged Mind, revives the erotic thriller genre, albeit with a twist: this story is about a lesbian couple.
“When I read the script, the one thing I really loved, that I’d not seen much of — this is an LGBTQ story,” explained Kali through a bright smile. “But it’s not a coming out story. It wasn’t all this drama. It was two women just trying to date like everybody else. We’re just dropped in that world. They’re just trying to find love like everyone else on this planet.”

Providing new takes on the time loop story and the depiction of voodoo, Jagged Mind is packed full of twists. "It feels like I'm not seeing all of you..." Hulu has revealed the first official trailer for a psychological thriller film titled Jagged Mind, which will be skipping theaters and heading straight to streaming on Hulu this summer. The project was developed by 20th Digital Studio, and unfortunately it still has that TV movie feel to it. Jagged Mind is about a woman plagued by blackouts and strange visions that lead her to discover she's stuck in a series of time loops, possibly related to her mysterious new girlfriend. What's being kept a secret? Maisie Richardson-Sellers (DC's Legends of Tomorrow) stars as Billie, with Shannon Woodward as her girlfriend, Alex. The film will have its world premiere at the American Black Film Festival in June just before it's out for viewing. This looks a bit cheap, cliche, and obvious, but maybe some will enjoy it anyway. // Continue Reading ›...

Way back in 2016, when a hot new HBO show called "Westworld" aired the penultimate episode of its first season, it left the fate of one Ashley Stubbs, played by Luke Hemsworth, dangling. As head of security for the Westworld theme park, Stubbs had ventured into the heart of the robot apocalypse in search of his missing coworker, Elsie (Shannon Woodward), only to be met by hostile members of the Ghost Nation tribe, each wielding a tomahawk or bow and arrow. They didn't respond to the command, "Freeze all motor functions," the way the park's robotic hosts normally would, and when Stubbs drew his gun, one of them tackled him.
For some, Stubbs was presumed dead after that cliffhanger, since the season never returned to the character after that. In a 2022 interview with Collider to promote "Westworld" season 4, Hemsworth himself admitted, "There was every intention that my character wasn't gonna be...

Joel and Ellie will soon make their live-action debut as part of HBO’s TV adaptation of Naughty Dog Studios’ critically acclaimed video game “The Last of Us,” but the road to getting this adaptation off the ground was a challenging one — and it started with a scuttled attempt to turn the post-apocalyptic game into a movie.
The series takes place 20 years after modern civilization has been destroyed. Joel (Pedro Pascal), a hardened survivor, is hired to smuggle a 14-year-old girl named Ellie (Bella Ramsey) out of an oppressive quarantine zone.
