Ali Wong, Ellen DeGeneres, and the best Netflix comedy specials in fall 2024
Image
We can't believe the year is almost over. It seems like just yesterday we were celebrating a new year and soon we'll be doing it all over again. 2024 has been a great year for Netflix so far, and there's still so much more content the streamer has yet to release.

An example is comedy specials. We've already seen so many new specials come out over the year, but there is still a good amount left to be released. At the beginning of September, Netflix dropped two specials that were very entertaining to watch. They were Phil Wang: Wang in There, Baby! and Ahir Shah: Ends.

Luckily, there's still one more Netflix comedy special coming out at the end of the month, and it's one that many people are looking forward to. If you're wondering what special we're talking about, all you have to do is keep on reading.

Image
Ali Wong is returning to Netflix with her fourth comedy special. On Monday, the streaming service announced that Ali Wong will premiere Ali Wong: Single Lady, a special about her “divorced mom era,” on Oct. 8.

The new special was filmed during one of her Netflix Is a Joke Fest performances earlier this year. (She sold out 12 shows at the Wiltern in Los Angeles during the comedy festival.) The special will see her open up about life post-divorce from John Hakuta, her husband of 10 years, and her new “quest for love.

Ali Wong Tackles Post-Divorce Life in New Netflix Special
Image
Ali Wong’s post-divorce life is getting the Netflix treatment.

The comic is set to release Single Lady on the global platform Oct. 8. The stand-up special, where she will also open up about her quest for love following the demise of her marriage, marks her fourth hour for Netflix. Her previous specials, including Ali Wong: Don Wong, Ali Wong: Baby Cobra and Ali Wong: Hard Knock Wife, featured similarly personal material, be it marriage, pregnancy or motherhood.

Wong filmed the latest hour at The Wiltern in Los Angeles as part of the Netflix Is a Joke Fest this past spring. She also directed it herself and serves as an executive producer alongside veteran John Irwin. It arrives as the market for specials is a bright spot in an otherwise bleak industry, with platforms from Netflix to Amazon to Hulu willing to write as much as eight-figure checks to land top comics.

Film Review: Slaughter in San Francisco (1974) By Lo Wei
Image
The 1970's was an era of extravagant hair dos and fashion senses that will test the contrast option on your television settings! It was also the time of the Kung Fu Boom and therefore the inevitable attempt of Hong Kong studios to attempt to cash in. Long before Jackie Chan made his first crack at international stardom, we got “Slaughter in San Francisco” aka “Yellow Faced Tiger” with Wong Tao in the lead and Lo Wei at the helm. Throw in Chuck Norris as the bad guy with the incredible chest hair and you have a movie that is pure 1974, released by Eureka Entertainment in their latest addition to their collection.

on Amazon by clicking on the image below

Cops Wong (Wong Tao) and John (Robert Jones) are best friends and partners on the force. An altercation with some bad guys leaves Wong removed from the police and working as a waiter.

This Underrated Animated Show Explains Why Beef’s Cast Works So Well Together
Image
Ali Wong and Steven Yeun's chemistry contributed to the success of Netflix's Beef. They had previously worked together in Tuca & Bertie, an overlooked animated series. Despite its cancellation, Tuca & Bertie offers quality entertainment with witty dialogue and thought-provoking themes.

Ali Wong and Steven Yeun's chemistry in Netflix's Beef is one of the best things about the comedy-drama TV miniseries, and a previous collaboration between the two actors perfectly explains why Beef was bound to be successful. Wong and Yeun star in the miniseries about Amy and Danny, two strangers, who engage in a longstanding feud with growing stakes after allowing a road rage incident to consume every aspect of their personal lives. Created by Lee Sung Jin, Beef has plenty of shocking moments and is known for its dark humor, unexpected violence, and a cautionary tale about controlling one's emotions in the heat of tense situations.

After ‘Beef,' Ali Wong’s Comedy Specials Should Be Next on Your Watchlist
Image
Ali Wong fearlessly embodied a powerhouse of pent-up rage in the recently acclaimed Netflix series Beef which saw her in outrageous stand-offs against the equally angry Steven Yeun. If you enjoyed this darkly funny series (and if you've watched it that's a guaranteed yes) it's imperative that you should give Ali Wong's Netflix comedy specials Baby Cobra, Hard Knock Wife, and Don Wong, a watch. Similarly to Beef, they offer an original take on motherhood and monogamous relationships, subverting any worn-out or traditional views with a fierce relish. Wong also does not shy away from visceral bodily humor, describing her physicality in vivid detail in regard to sex and childbirth. Nothing is off the table in this consistently high-quality trilogy, which makes a perfect follow-up to the gripping show Beef if you're missing Wong's signature frankness and merciless sense of humor.

Film Review: The Night Orchid (1983) by Chang Peng-yi
Image
The same year which would see the release of Tsui Hark's much celebrated wuxia outing “Zu Warriors from the Magic Mountain” coincided with Chang Pang-yee's “The Night Orchid” arriving in cinemas. Even though the former is more known among cinephiles, both movies share a similar approach to their stories, a blend of martial arts and sword fighting, spiced with humour and fantasy. Also known as “Demon Fighter” or “Faster Blade Poisonous Darts”, the latter is an adaptation of Gu Long's novel of the same title, and typical for the kind of genre features the Taiwanese movie industry had been known for at the time. While Chang Peng-yi does not divert from the formula too much, perhaps “The Night Orchid” is worthwhile due to its visuals, which often border on being surreal or even going into horror territory.

The Night Orchid is screening at Old School Kung Fu Fest...

Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Star Rachel Brosnahan Learned Stand-Up Comedy By Watching Ali Wong
Image
The electric comedy series "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" is set to deliver a gloriously satisfying conclusion in its fifth and final season on Prime Video. Known for its blustering pace and whip-smart dialogue, the show offered a glimpse into the life and career of a housewife turned comedienne during one of the most exciting time periods in New York City's history. The swinging sixties opened up new avenues and opportunities for entertainers of every ilk, who flocked to Greenwich Village to appear on stage in hip, smoke-filled clubs like the infamous Gaslight Café on MacDougal Street. Winning numerous awards over multiple seasons, series star Rachel Brosnahan took inspiration from a number of performers to bring Midge Maisel to life when it was her time to shine in the spotlight.

The persona of Mrs. Maisel is said to have been based on comedy legend Joan Rivers, who broke down doors to...

Ali Wong Gets Dramatic
Image
“Do you have a breast pump?”

This is how Ali Wong greets my visibly third-trimester self when we meet up at Etta in Culver City for lunch in February. By the time we make it to our table, she is already whipping out her phone to text her assistant to deliver a pump to my apartment, and she spends the first 15 minutes of her interview focused on my pregnancy: how many weeks I’m along, how I felt during my glucose test (she’s the only person who’s ever asked me about that often-nauseating experience) and her three must-brings to the hospital for delivery (a breastfeeding pillow, a nice blanket from home and a pack of Depends).

“I really miss being pregnant,” sighs Wong, 40, who famously was with child for each of her first two stand-up specials, 2016’s Baby Cobra and 2018’s Hard Knock Wife. “Sometimes it feels a...

Trailer: Ping Pong of China by Deng Chao and Yu Baimei
Don Wong
In the early 1990s, the performance of the Chinese men’s table tennis team was at a historic all-time low. As the head coach during that time of crisis, Cai Zhenhua was entrusted with the challenging task of forming a new team. Led by the so-called “Five Great Generals”, players Ma Wenge, Wang Tao, Ding Song, Liu Guoliang as well as Kong Linghui, and after a period of arduous training, the team finally prevailed at the 1995 World Table Tennis Championships in Tianjin to return to the pinnacle of the sport.

This movie is based on real-life historical events, and pays tribute to the spirit of unity, perseverance and hard work in Chinese table tennis.

Ali Wong's New Comedy Special, Don Wong, Is Coming To Netflix On Valentine's Day

Netflix seems to be very happy to be in the Ali Wong business. The actress, writer, and comedian first made a splash on the streamer with her two insanely funny stand-up specials, "Baby Cobra" and "Hard Knock Wife." She then went on to voice characters in their hit animated shows "Tuca & Bertie" and "Big Mouth." And during the same year that they premiered, Wong also starred alongside "Fresh Off The Boat" and "WandaVision" star Randall Park in "Always Be My Maybe," arguably one of the best romantic comedies of the past decade. Disney’s “The Lion King” was the big VFX winner Wednesday at the 18th annual Ves Awards at the Beverly Hilton, grabbing three prizes. Meanwhile. Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman” won for supporting VFX and feature compositing.

This now gives the edge to “The Lion King” (supervised by three-time Oscar winner Rob Legato) in the VFX Oscar race. Jon Favreau’s breakthrough virtual production and faux live-action aesthetic was due to Mpc Film’s accomplished photoreal animation. Of course, “The Irishman” has been given a boost, too. And we shouldn’t count out “Avengers: Endgame,” seeking to become the first Marvel movie to win the VFX Oscar, even though it came away empty-handed for its extraordinary end battle and outstanding character work on Thanos and Smart Hulk.

“The Lion King,” the Disney “live-action” remake that is made up almost entirely of computer-generated characters and backgrounds, has won three awards at the Visual Effects Society’s 18th annual Ves Awards, which were handed out Wednesday night in Los Angeles.

“The Irishman,” with its extensive use of de-aging technology, won two awards, including Outstanding Supporting Effects in a Photoreal Feature. “Missing Link” was the top animated feature with two awards.
