Far East Film Festival: Yihui Shao’s Feminist Drama ‘Her Story’ Wins Top Prize
Image
Her Story, Yihui Shao’s feature dramedy that became something of a feminist phenomenon in China, scored another big win by securing the top prize at the 27th Far East Film Festival (Feff), which concluded Friday night in the northern Italian city of Udine. The film, which grossed almost $100 million at China’s box office and inspired a thousand think pieces about its radical and refreshing themes, received Feff’s Golden Mulberry Audience Award. Her Story stars Song Jia and Zhong Chuxi, and tells the story of two single women who become neighbors, and despite their contrasting personalities and circumstances, become fast friends.

Feff’s second most coveted audience award, the Silver Mulberry, went to Anselm Chan’s Hong Kong family drama The Last Dance. Like Her Story, The Last Dance was a box office phenomenon in its domestic market, and is currently the highest grossing Hong Kong film of all time.

Emperor Motion Pictures COO Cecil Yow Talks ‘The Last Dance’ Success And Future Production Strategy
Image
Exclusive: While Hong Kong’s film industry has not had the easiest ride since the pandemic, it continues to defy expectations by throwing up locally produced films that have been breaking records at the local box office.

The most recent of these, Emperor Motion Pictures’ The Last Dance, released in November 2024, has become the highest-grossing Hong Kong film of all time – indeed the highest-grossing Chinese-language film ever at the Hong Kong box office – grossing more than $20M (Hk$161M).

The film has also performed strongly on its international release – taking more than $800,000 in the UK, where it’s the third highest grossing Hong Kong film of all time behind Stephen Chow’s Kung Fu Hustle and Wong Kar Wai’s In The Mood For Love. It has also done well in other territories, including North America, Australia, New Zealand and Malaysia, grossing $4M (RM18M) in the latter, a...

Talent Spotlight: Ten Filmmakers Leading The Charge For Hong Kong’s New Wave
Image
Despite the challenges currently faced by the Hong Kong film industry, a wave of new filmmakers has emerged in recent years. Backed by government funding and the mentoring of experienced local producers and directors, these talents have seen encouraging box office results at home as well as festival play and some commercial success overseas.

Unlike Hong Kong’s previous generation of filmmakers, which specialized in crime thrillers and martial arts action movies, these younger directors tend to work with much smaller budgets and focus on realistic characters and social issues relevant to their hometown of Hong Kong. Few of these filmmakers are aiming for mainland Chinese audiences, due to the high costs, cultural differences and censorship issues that complicate releasing films in that market.

For nearly two decades now, the Hong Kong Film Development Council (Hkfdc) has provided a range of funding programmes to support local filmmakers, including the Film Production Financing Scheme,...

‘The Last Dance’ Review: Hong Kong Blockbuster Resonates With Compassion And Authenticity
Image
Hong Kong moviegoers continued to prove their willingness to turn out for local productions in 2024, pushing Anselm Chan’s funeral drama The Last Dance to become the most successful local film of all time at the Hong Kong box office with over $18 milion.

The success of The Last Dance followed Soi Cheang’s nostalgia-fueled martial arts thriller Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In (Hong Kong’s Oscar submission) and its portrayal of the notorious, long-demolished Kowloon City neighborhood. There is a sustained desire, it would seem, to preserve and celebrate specific elements of Hong Kong culture which have come under threat in recent years, as the city is fast coming to resemble just another Chinese metropolis.

The Last Dance enshrines precisely the same sensibility as its recent box office predecessors, albeit in a markedly different tone. Chan’s previous features, Ready O/R Knot (2021) and its sequel Ready O/R Rot (2023), were both broad comedies.

The Last Dance Review: Cultural Reflections Through Humor and Drama
Image
In Anselm Chan’s The Last Dance, Dayo Wong plays Dominic Ngai, a wedding planner whose life falls apart after the pandemic forces him into the funeral business. This change not only serves as a plot device but also reflects how fragile life is and how we can end up going in unexpected directions during crises.

The film uses nonlinear action telling, combining flashbacks and present-day interactions to increase our understanding of Dominic’s struggles. This method is reminiscent of modern film directors like Noah Baumbach, who use complicated character interactions to explore adult complexities. In traditional stories, the difference between happy weddings and sad funerals creates a compelling tension that makes the story more interesting.

The relationship between Dominic and Master Man Kwok (Michael Hui), a traditionalist whose strict adherence to Taoist practices clashes with Dominic’s more contemporary methods, is at the heart of the narrative. This conflict...

Michael Hui
Film Review: The Last Dance (2024) by Anselm Chan
Michael Hui
Comedy legends Michael Hui and Dayo Wong are no strangers to ruling the box office. Back in 1976, Hui directed and starred in “The Private Eyes”, which went on to become the highest grossing domestic film of its time in Hong Kong. His last directorial “The Magic Touch” in 1992, which also coincidentally featured Dayo Wong in a prominent role, ended up being financially the most successful work of his career as a director. Wong, for his part, starred in “A Guilty Conscience” last year, which still reigns supreme as the highest grossing domestic film of all time in the country. The fact that these two box office kings unite in the same project, only for the second time, for Anselm Chan‘s “The Last Dance” makes it one of the most anticipated films of the year.

‘The Last Dance’ records Hong Kong’s biggest ever single-day box office for a local film
Image
Anselm Chan’s The Last Dance has broken multiple records, rejuvenating the Hong Kong box office after a lacklustre six months since the release of blockbuster Twilight Of The Warriors: Walled In.

Just nine days after its opening on November 9, the Hong Kong drama has grossed almost $7.7m (Hk$60m) at the local box office so far.

This includes $1.1m (Hk$8.6m) – or $1.2m (Hk$9.18m) inclusive of Macau – on November 16 alone, surpassing 2016’s Cold War 2 to take the biggest single-day box office for a Hong Kong and Chinese-language film.

The data is provided by Hong Kong Box Office, a...

Funeral Parlor-Set ‘The Last Dance’ Breaks Hong Kong’s Single Day Box Office Record
Image
“The Last Dance,” a funeral parlor-set drama film directed by Anselm Chan, has broken Hong Kong’s single day box office record.

The story depicts a former wedding planner who changes career and enters the funeral business instead. He partners up with a Taoist priest who has doubts about the man’s suitability. Together, through various funeral rituals, the pair probe questions about life and death.

The film was released in its home town theaters on Nov. 9, but broke the record a week later on Nov. 16, when it scored Hk$9.18 million in Hong Kong and neighboring Macau, according to data from Hong Kong Box Office Co., Ltd. The previous single day record was 2016’s “Cold War 2,” which collected Hk$7.56 million.

“As of Nov. 17, the film’s box office in Hong Kong and Macau has reached Hk$58.0 million, in the nine days since its release. And the box office is...

The Last Dance review – Chinese funeral business is backdrop for arresting, life-affirming drama
Dayo Wong in Chung gik yan je (2006)
An irascible priest loses his patience with a newcomer to Hong Kong’s funeral traditions in punchy melodrama of a film

Starting out as a prickly comedy in which wedding planner Dominic (Hong Kong standup icon Dayo Wong) switches to the funeral business, The Last Dance takes a sudden sombre turn. Dominic lands a seemingly unhinged client, turned down by all his competitors, who wants him to embalm her young son. As a string of putrefied matter hangs from the boy’s back while he is dressing him, Dominic realises he has already been dead for six months. It’s not the only mortician scene – and not the only note of unsettling realism with which writer-director Anselm Chan ballasts this well-constructed and punchy melodrama.

Bequeathed the funeral agent gig by his girlfriend’s retiring uncle, Dominic must get to grips with his new business partner: ball-breaking Taoist priest Master Man...

How do you make a lovely, life-affirming film about death that appeals to general audiences just about everywhere? Up-and-coming Hong Kong filmmaker Anselm Chan has the answer in “The Last Dance,” in which a cash-strapped former wedding planner and a stern old Taoist priest become unlikely partners in the funeral business. This respectful and uplifting journey into Hong Kong’s unique and fascinating funeral traditions opens locally on Nov. 9 and in the U.K. and Ireland on Nov. 15 — just the start of what’s sure to be wide international theatrical exposure.

After making a mark with his rowdy 2021 romcom “Ready or Knot...

Sunny Chan
Film Review: Table for Six 2 (2024) by Sunny Chan Wing-Sun
Sunny Chan
With its charming ensemble cast, Sunny Chan's ‘Table for Six' mixed slapstick comedy with melodrama, creating a number one box office hit in Hong Kong in 2022. The original film explored romantic complications and family issues, and most of this film took place at a single apartment dinner table. More ambitious in scope, the sequel ‘Table for Six 2' has an expansive budget, the same charismatic cast and takes place in a multitude of locations, replacing the apartment dinners with three respective wedding ceremonies. Despite this new makeover, ‘Table for Six 2' feels lackluster in script and story when compared to its predecessor, with only its stellar cast keeping it alive.

“Table for Six 2” is screening in UK and Irish cinemas, courtesy of Trinity CineAsia

Returning to their roles as half-brothers, Louis Chung and Charm Man Chan are Bernard and Lung. Although the siblings are seemingly...

Film review: Table for Six (2022) By Sunny Chan
Image
A victim of Covid 19, this Chinese New Year film missed its scheduled February date but it finally hit the cinemas in early September 2022. Premiered at the Udine Far East Film Festival in April garnering the Best Screenplay Award, it made its way to the 21st New York Asian Film Festival in July. However it did exceptionally well after its local release and took in over 77 millions and eventually became the 3rd highest-grossing domestic film in Hong Kong.

A follow-up to his “Men on the Dragon” (2018) starring Francis Ng, Chan's light-hearted comedy follows the life of Steve Chan (Dayo Wong Chi Wah) and his two brothers. They live in a large apartment which used to be a charsiu (BBQ pork) factory owned by their late parents. Since he is the eldest brother, he regards himself as the head of the family. After breaking up with his girlfriend Monica (Stephy Tang), he...

John Chong on Making ‘Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In’ an Authentic Dive into Notorious Kowloon Walled City and Yet Emblematic of Hong Kong’s New Wave (Exclusive)
Image
Kowloon Walled City — one of Hong Kong’s most famous landmarks, or infamous trouble spots, depending on your point of view — fell prey to the developers’ bulldozer 30 years ago. But it remains an icon of the territory’s gritty spirit and is being painstakingly re-created for action thriller feature “Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In.”

The film is a beacon for how Hong Kong cinema is now evolving. Directed by hot-shot Soi Cheang, whose “Mad Fate” recently played in Berlin and is set for imminent local release, “Twilight” boasts leading stars Louis Koo, Sammo Hung and Richie Jen, plus emerging talents Philip Ng, Raymond Lau and Terrance Lau.

The film’s Hk$300 million ($39 million) budget makes it one of the most expensive Hong Kong productions of all time. But principal backer Media Asia is sparing no expense promoting the title. The company’s corporate booth at the FilMart rights market...

Market In Focus: Hong Kong Film Industry Stages Post-Pandemic Comeback
Image
At previous in-person editions of Filmart, Hong Kong’s major film companies, including Edko Films, Emperor Motion Pictures (Emp), One Cool Group, Universe Films and Media Asia, always anchored the trade show floor with huge, elaborate booths promoting the latest Hong Kong films, animation and TV series.

Despite a difficult few years, during which they’ve had to navigate Covid-related cinema closures, stringent travel restrictions and Hong Kong’s political upheaval, all these companies and more are re-erecting their stalls at the first physical edition of Filmart in three years, and even have some good news to share.

Just last week, Edko Films’ legal drama A Guilty Conscience, starring Dayo Wong as a sharp-tongued barrister defending a single mother against ruthless tycoons, became the first Hong Kong film ever to gross more than Hk$100M (US$12.7M) at the local box office. In a moment of irresponsible negligence, sharp-tongued barrister Adrian Lam (Dayo Wong) mishandles a child abuse case and indirectly sentences the innocent Jolene Tsang (Louise Wong) to prison for 17 years. Falling from disgrace, Adrian decides to serve the public and defend the commoners, until an unlikely opportunity for appeal surfaces. Determined to right his wrong, Adrian gathers former partners Evelyn Fong (Renci Yeung) and Prince (Ho Kai Wa) to free Jolene, but that would mean fighting against the tycoons, Victoria (Fish Liew) and Desmond Chung (Adam Pak), who also have barrister James Tung (Michael Wong) as their private consultant. With pressure from media and police, and facing tough cross examination from prosecutor Kam Yuen Shan (Tse Kwan Ho) in court, how will Adrian uphold justice and punish the true culprit?...

Buoyant Hong Kong Studio Edko Launches AFM Sales Trio
Image
Riding on the box office success in Hong Kong of its “Table for Six,” Edko Films, the production, distribution and exhibition conglomerate headed by Bill Kong (“Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon”), is launching a trio of new titles at the American Film Market this week.

One titles is courtroom drama “A Guilty Conscience,” which follows the aftermath of a manslaughter case in which a barrister’s mistake lands his supermodel client in jail. The path to an appeal, however, seems like justice itself is on trial.

Writer and director Jack Ng is making his feature directing debut on the drama; his track record as a writer that includes Edko’s 2021 hit “Anita” and “Cold War II.” The company’s confidence is such that the picture is set as Edko’s biggest title for the crucial Chinese New Year slot. It stars Dayo Wong and Louise Wong (“Anita”).

Image
Family comedy “Table For Six” has set an opening day local record for a comedy film in Hong Kong, to the relief of producers who were forced to digest a releasing delay of six months.

And producers had assembled a cast of major Hong Kong and regional talents, including Dayo Wong, Stephy Tang, Louis Cheung, Ivana Wong, Lin Min-Chen and Chan Charm Man.

But Hong Kong’s strict Covid-control measures, in response to a fifth wave of infections, closed cinemas for the first four months...

Craig Lines Jan 4, 2017

He's currently starring in Star Wars: Rogue One, but there are some fascinating horrors to be found in Donnie Yen's back catalogue...

After his recent show-stealing turn in Rogue One, it felt like the right time to write a little about Donnie Yen, one of my favourite actors. From his incendiary breakthrough performance in Tiger Cage (1988) to the acclaimed Ip Man trilogy (2009 - 2016), Yen's body of work has earned him a reputation as one of the all-time greatest martial arts stars and action choreographers.
