Curator of numerous art exhibitions, including Frida Kahlo and Tina Modotti (1982). Author of Signs and Meaning in the Cinema (1969, 1972, 1998), Readings and Writings (1981), and Raiding the Icebox: Reflections on Twentieth Century Culture (1993), and the British Film Institute monograph on Singin' in the Rain (1993).
