Henry Cavill's Failed James Bond Audition Led to Gerard Butler's Iconic Role in Zack Snyder's '300'
Image
Before he was The Witcher. Before he was Superman. Henry Cavill was just another rising star in Hollywood trying to land his breakout role—and, for a while, he couldn’t catch a break. The British actor was once dubbed the “unluckiest man in Hollywood,” having narrowly missed out on playing Superman (a role he’d eventually win), Batman, and most infamously, James Bond. And in a move that sounds almost too ironic to be true, Cavill even turned down a leading role in Zack Snyder’s300—all in the hopes of becoming 007.

In an interview with British magazine Nuts, Cavill opened up about the string of close calls that plagued his early career. One of the biggest gut punches? Losing out on Bond to Daniel Craig in 2006’s Casino Royale after putting all his chips on landing the part.

“When I wasn't selected for Bond, I was very disappointed.

Henry Cavill Turned Down "Leading Role" in Zack Snyder's '300' Because of James Bond
Image
There was once a time when Henry Cavill was known as the unluckiest actor in Hollywood. Losing out on major roles such as Superman (a role he would eventually win in Zack Snyder’s divisive Dceu), Batman, and James Bond all within a few years of each other, Cavill even turned down a leading role in another Zack Snyder epic, rejecting the part to better prepare to potentially play 007 in 2006’s Casino Royale. A coveted role he ultimately lost to Daniel Craig.

Whether Cavill’s luck has changed all that much (he is no longer Superman following James Gunn’s Dcu reboot and the drama behind the scenes of his other major project The Witcher is well documented) is open to debate, but things may have played out differently for Cavill, who could perhaps have seen his star rise faster sooner, had he not turned down a role in Zack Snyder’s 2007 action epic,...

‘300’ TV Series in Early Development at Warner Bros. Television (Exclusive)
Image
A “300” TV series adaptation is in early development at Warner Bros. Television, Variety has learned from sources.

Exact plot details are still being worked out, but sources say that the show would serve as a prequel to the 2006 film. No writer or platform is currently attached to the project.

Deals are still being negotiated, but Zack Snyder, who directed and co-wrote “300,” is in talks to direct and executive produce the series. Deborah Snyder, who executive produced “300,” would also return as an executive producer under her and Zack’s Stone Quarry production banner, with Stone Quarry’s Wesley Coller also on board. Gianni Nunnari, Mark Canton, and Bernie Goldmann — all of whom were producers on the film — are likewise in talks to return.

Reps for Wbtv declined to comment.

“300” was based on the graphic novel of the same name by Frank Miller and Lynn Varley, which was...

En territoire ennemi (2001)
Trailer for WWII Covert Mission Film 'Enemy Lines' with Ed Westwick
En territoire ennemi (2001)
"I am offering you a way out." Good Deed Ent. has released the first official Us trailer for an indie WWII action thriller titled Enemy Lines, a shortened version of "Behind Enemy Lines" (which was already used for the 2001 film). In the frozen, war torn landscape of occupied Poland during World War II, a crack team of allied commandos – a British squad is matched with an American officer – are sent on a deadly mission behind enemy lines to extract a Polish rocket scientist from the hands of the Nazis. Starring Ed Westwick, with John Hannah, Tom Wisdom, Corey Johnson, Ekaterina Valdimirova, and Pawel Delag as Dr. Fabian. This looks like like your standard WWII action thriller with all the usual war movie tropes, and Nazis, plus a few big tanks and shoot outs. Doesn't seem particularly unique, but still might be worth a look. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Anders Banke's Enemy Lines,...

Hannibal season 3 episode 1 review: Antipasto
Hannibal is back with a glorious new episode. Here's Laura's review of Antipasto...

This review contains spoilers.

3.1 Antipasto

Just like every other devotee to Bryan Fuller’s Hannibal, I’ve spent the 12+ months since its last episode trying to convince everyone I know to watch the show. The reasons for this are many.

First, frankly, it is, quite simply, an amazing piece of cinema. Yes, I know it’s on television, but trust me, it might as well be on the silver screen at a film festival for the level of auteuritsm on display. If you aren’t watching, you’re missing out.

Second, many people don’t watch because they are convinced that the show is nothing but an excuse to bring more violence to television. And I am not going to pretend that the show isn’t violent. The season finale last year was nothing less than...

Hannibal, Ep. 3.01, “Antipasto” is an elegant, sinister fairy tale
Hannibal, Season 3, Episode 1, “Antipasto”

Written by Bryan Fuller & Steve Lightfoot

Directed by Vincenzo Natali

Airs Thursdays at 10pm (Et) on NBC

“Mizumono”, the tour-de-force finale of Hannibal season two, left fans wrecked, the two year arc of Will Graham and Hannibal Lecter’s relationship reaching its inevitable climax as Will, Abigail, Alana, and Jack lay bleeding out in Hannibal’s home while Hannibal strode off to start his life anew. Despite its title, the first two seasons of Hannibal have been Will’s story more than anyone else’s; picking up not in the aftermath of the finale’s carnage but an indeterminate amount of time later, with Hannibal, is a surprising but canny move that refocuses the series on its titular character. Free from the grounding influence of Will, Jack, and the rest of the series’ usual trappings, “Antipasto” is free to indulge in the elegance and romance of Hannibal’s world,...

"Hannibal" Review & Recap: Season 3 Premiere, "Antipasto"
Mads Mikkelsen in "Hannibal"Photo: Brooke Palmer / NBC The season three premiere of "Hannibal", titled "Antipasto" is exactly what you'd expect based on that title, an appetizer (albeit an explosive one), teasing you for the main meal of what is the venture into all new territory for the dark and murderous series. When we last left the story, Hannibal (Mads Mikkelsen) walked out his front door on a dark and rainy night, the victor (depending on how you look at it) in a bloody battle. Jack (Lawrence Fishburne) was left bleeding out in the pantry, Alana (Caroline Dhavernas) seemingly paralyzed after being pushed from Hannibal's upstairs window and a severely injured Will (Hugh Dancy) was gasping for breath, staring at the corpse of Abigail Hobbs (Kacey Rohl). And just before the season two finale came to an end we see Hannibal and Dr. Bedelia Du Maurier (Gillian Anderson) aboard a plane flying to Europe.

Dominion: Cancel or Renew for Season Two?
Last month, Syfy finished airing the first (and very short) season of Dominion. How did the sci-fi series do in the ratings? Will it be cancelled or renewed for a second season or, will it be cancelled instead?

In June, the series debuted to 1.96 million viewers and a 0.6 rating in the 18-49 demographic. Compared to other current Syfy scripted series, that was a positive premiere. Viewership dropped 26% in week two but then grew slightly in week three and leveled off.

Soulmate is currently available on DVD over in the UK with no Stateside release yet announced.

The supernatural thriller stars Anna Walton (Hellboy 2), Tom Wisdom (300), Nick Brimble (A Knight’s Tale), and Emma Cleasby (Dog Soldiers) and was penned by Carolyn, who has acted in Neil Marshall’s Centurion and Doomsday.

Synopsis:

Soulmate follows a young woman who retreats to a remote cottage after a failed suicide attempt. She soon discovers the cottage is haunted by its previous owner but decides to remain, hoping to find comfort in the ghost.

The film is produced by Claire Otway and is a Neil Marshall (The Descent, Dog Soldiers, Centurion) presentation for production company Sterling Pictures.

‘Soulmate’ DVD Review
Stars: Anna Walton, Tom Wisdom, Tanya Myers, Nick Brimble, Emma Cleasby | Written and Directed by Axelle Carolyn

[Note: This review is of the full Uncut version of Soulmate shown at last years Frightfest Halloween All-Nighter, which is not the version being released on DVD. The BBFC requested cuts to the opening suicide scene due to "imitable technique" and so director Axelle Carolyn excised the entire scene from the home entertainment release - hopefully that scene will be made available online at some point]

Actress Axelle Carolyn first turned her hand to directing with the well-received short The Last Post in 2011, she followed it up with the short The Halloween Kid, which screened as part of the International Short Film Showcase at Film4 Frightfest in August 2012. Soulmate, her feature directorial debut, stars Anna Walton (who previously worked with Carolyn on The Halloween Kid and will be a familiar face in to genre fans, having appeared in Hellboy 2 in 2008 and The Seasoning House in 2012) and sees a woman, Audrey, retreat to a remote country cottage after attempting to commit suicide due to the sudden death of her husband. But once settled in she soon discovers her safe haven is haunted by its previous owner, and this spirit has some startling links to the nearby local community, especially the strange Zellaby family.

Syfy on Wednesday released the first full-length trailer for Sharknado 2: The Second One — premiering July 31 at 9/8c — and it’s full of everything you’d expect: vicious sharks attacks, melodious shrieks from Tara Reid (my favorite arrives at the 0:38 mark) and, of course, the perfect amount of self-awareness.

Dominion Review – Syfy Offers Up Wacky/Serious TV Option
Dominion Review

Syfy has a tricky base of fans, and Dominion may just be the kind of crazy that works for a lot of them. The network’s identity can seem a bit polarizing, with Haven, Helix, and Being Human fans perhaps not wanting to identify themselves as also Sharknado fans. That leaves an area open which some consider to be something like “mid-range Syfy.” Different shows fall in different places on the hokey spectrum depending on who you ask, but Dominion, based on the 2010 film Legion, is clearly trying to see just how far you can push things.

Much like the film that came before (and indeed, Sharknado), Dominion sidesteps certain requirements of cohesion, believability, and logical construction and/or characters, by having a basic premise so bonkers that it is ultimately critique immune. It’s a story about angels attacking humans because God “disappeared.” If you want characters...

Dominion episode 1 review: Pilot
Rob checks out Dominion, Syfy’s televisual follow-up to the supernatural cinematic flop Legion…

Review

This review contains spoilers.

1.1 Pilot

Backflips! Assassinations! Lens flare! The pilot episode of Dominion, the televisual follow-up to the much-maligned 2010 supernatural action film Legion, tries hard to encourage audiences into forgetting the flaws of its big-screen predecessor though occasional dollops of action and suspense. But does it work?

Well, at times. Dominion kicks off with a hugely promising double-whammy – an animated sequence retelling the events of Legion through snazzy stylized stained-glass windows, followed by a tense opening scene which sees our lead character Alex (played incredibly straight by Christopher Egan) stumbling upon a rogue pack of evil angels and hurriedly trying to escape.

This results in a pacey action sequence which combines our first glimpse of angels in flight with a speedy escape car, a big gate that won’t open and a trigger-happy gun turret into some well-executed,...

Dominion Series Premiere Review: “Pilot” (Season 1, Episode 1)
After watching the pilot episode of Syfy’s newest original series, Dominion, I’m still not quite sure how it ever got off the ground. Now, I don’t mean to slam the show by saying that – but it’s not often that a small-scale flick like Legion, which proved a modest success at the box office back in 2010 but wasn’t really anything special in terms of plot, premise or acting, gets a follow-up, let alone in the form of an entire TV series. Was there any reason to so extensively revisit the world of Legion, in which an army of angels led by archangel Gabriel fight a war of possession against humankind? Honestly, probably not – but Dominion entertains regardless.

The show opens 25 years after the conclusion of Legion, in which the archangel Michael succeeded in protecting a newborn child, prophesied to be the Chosen One, from Gabriel’s army.

Dominion Review: Syfy’s Angel Drama Is Still Looking For Its Wings
Syfy's new series Dominion opens with the assertion: "25 years ago, God left." It doesn't say to where, or what it was about 1989 that annoyed Him so much that He saw fit to finally have enough with humanity. What viewers can use to glean a little more of regarding the show's backstory is the lackluster film the series is based on: 2010's Legion, starring Paul Bettany as the archangel Michael, who has decided to side with humanity in a war against his brother Gabriel and a lower class of angels. Michael is back in Dominion, this time played by 300's Tom Wisdom, and his main objective is still to protect a "Chosen One" who will save mankind from angels (or at least, TV specials about them). Hit the jump for more about what these angels should learn from Wings of Desire. An intimate knowledge of Legion is not required to follow Dominion,...

Based on characters from the theatrical film Legion (2010) and with a pilot directed by Scott Stewart (who also directed the film), the epic new Syfy fantasy series Dominion is set in the year 25 A.E. (After Extinction), in a post-apocalyptic city called Vega (formerly Las Vegas), where an army of lower angels, assembled by the archangel Gabriel (Carl Beukes), has waged a war of possession against mankind, and archangel Michael (Tom Wisdom) has turned against his own kind to side with humanity.
