Movie Poster of the Week: The Film Posters of Mihajlo Arsovski
Image
On a recent visit to Zagreb in Croatia, I was stopped in my tracks by this poster, above, in the Museum of Contemporary Art. It is a design for the First Science Fiction Fair held in 1972 in the museum’s previous incarnation as the Gallery of Contemporary Art. The poster’s artist, Mihajlo Arsovski, had been designing exhibition posters for the Gallery for more than a decade and this poster was awarded the Gold Medal at the International Poster Exhibition in Varese, Italy, in 1973. After finding it, I posted about the design on my Movie Poster of the Day Instagram and asked whether anyone followed my account in Croatia, which led to my meeting up with two Croatian artists/designers Neven Udovičić and Sara Kern Gacesa. DVD Review: Monogram Cowboy Collection Volume 6: Jimmy Wakely
Cinelinx puts on its sequin shirt and ten gallon hat to take in Warner Archive's new Monogram Cowboy Collection Volume 6, featuring the films of Jimmy Wakely!

This Warner Archive release is a Manufacture-On-Demand (Mod) DVD. It is made to be played in "play only" DVD devices, and may not play in some DVD recorders or PC drives. These discs, however, played fine in the Panasonic DVD recorder used for this review. This title is available directly from WBShop.com.

The Set-up

A collection of six films featuring cowboy crooner Jimmy Wakely. Includes Riding the Dusty Trail, Lonesome Trail, The Rangers Ride, Range Renegades, Silver Trails, and Brand of Fear.

The Delivery

Jimmy Wakely was one of the last of Hollywood's singing cowboys, and starred in dozens of films for Monogram Pictures in the 1940s and 1950s. Six of them are featured in this Warner Archive 2-disc set.

Wakely never quite...

Hooray! Hooray! The first of May!
When April with its sweet showers brought flowers to the lawns of May and birds filled the air with melodies, Dan-Dan the Yo-Yo Man made his annual pilgrimage to our playground at St. Mary's School. He drove up in a dark maroon 1950 Hudson we all recognized on sight: It had the Step-Down Ride that allowed it to out-corner Fords and Chevys at the stock car races out at the fairgrounds. To own a car like that was to be a Duncan Yo-Yo professional.

Dan-Dan dismounted on the far side of the big Hudson, and when he walked into view there were already two Yo-Yos spinning in the air before him, making a whirl of red and yellow. He walked smiling toward home plate, let the yo-yos bounce off it, and snapped them on the fly into his pockets. He took out one, and rocked the baby, walked the dog, skinned the cat,...
