Exclusive: Saul Rubinek has joined the cast of James Wan and Simu Liu’s untitled Peacock espionage thriller series.

The actor will appear in all episodes as Victor Simonek, a retired special agent and confidante to Liu’s character.

The series is set five minutes in the future when first-generation American intelligence analyst Alexander Hale (Liu) realizes his brain has been hacked, giving the perpetrators access to everything he sees and hears. Caught between his shadowy agency and the unknown hackers, he must maintain a performance 24/7 to flush out who’s responsible and prove where his allegiance lies.

The cast also includes Melissa Barrera as Michelle; Sinclair Daniel as Parker; Brian d’Arcy James as John Moira; Mark O’Brien as Cobb; Sara Amini as Elle; and Kathleen Chalfant as St. George.

Per Variety, the new series has cast former Scream franchise star Melissa Barrera, marking another big role for the scream queen after her controversial exit from the horror movie series. Simu Liu’s upcoming thriller series at Peacock is building out it cast.

Variety has learned that Melissa Barrera, Sinclair Daniel, Brian d’Arcy James, Mark O’Brien, and Kathleen Chalfant will all appear alongside Liu in the series. They will play Michelle, Parker, John Moira, Cobb, and St. George respectively.

The untitled series was picked up at Peacock in February. “The Great” is not returning for Season 4 on Hulu, Variety has confirmed.

The satirical take on Catherine The Great’s story painted the historical figure as “an idealistic, romantic young girl, who arrives in Russia for an arranged marriage to the mercurial Emperor Peter. Hoping for love and sunshine, she finds instead a dangerous, depraved, backward world that she resolves to change. All she has to do is kill her husband, beat the church, baffle the military and get the court onside,” according to the official description.

Hulu has canceled its period dramedy The Great after three seasons.

The news comes some three-and-a-half months after the show’s third (and now final) season premiered as a binge release in May. The series stars Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult and explores the relationship of Russian Empress Catherine II and Emperor Peter III in the 18th century.

The show earned seven Emmy nominations over the course of its run, winning the award for outstanding period costumes last year. Fanning and Hoult also earned acting nominations in 2022, and series creator Tony McNamara and director Matt Shakman scored writing and directing nods for the series’ premiere episode in 2020.

The Great was also a critical favorite, earning nearly universally positive reviews across all three of its seasons. How many people watched it, however, remains a mystery as Hulu (like most other streamers) doesn’t share much viewing data and season three did...

After an assassination gone wrong left the fate — and the marriage — of Catherine the Great (Elle Fanning) and Peter (Nicholas Hoult) to hang in the balance, the oddly suited pair are determined to smooth over their issues by talking it out in the trailer for “The Great” Season 3, which premieres May 12 on Hulu.

“We’ve had some difficulties,” Catherine admits to what can only be assumed to be a therapist in the trailer, while Peter adds, “apparently marriage has challenges.”

“There was some blood shed,” Catherine continues, with Peter clarifying, “she tried to kill me.”

Hulu released a trailer for the newest installation of “The Great,” the satirical series that follows Catherine’s (Elle Fanning) rise to power. After she imprisoned Peter’s (Nicholas Hoult) friends and attempted to murder him in Season 2, Season 3 sees them try to improve their marriage.

The trailer opens with Catherine and Peter seated beside each other, confessing to the problems in their relationship.

On Friday, the creators and stars of The Great stopped by TCA to tease the second season of their acclaimed Hulu comedy, which is set to premiere on November 19.

Creator, writer and EP Tony McNamara, EP Marian Macgowan, and EP-actor Nicholas Hoult were joined on the panel by EP-actor Elle Fanning, who touched on a “parental theme” running through the season, with regard to her character, Catherine the Great.

“Catherine [is] grappling with the fact that she’s going to become a mother soon,” said Fanning. “The baby is also kind of her protection because she knows while [he’s] in there she’s safe, and Peter’s not going to kill her.”

Hoult noted that for at least part of Season 2, his character Peter III is “in imprisonment and confinement.” The overthrown Russian Emperor will deal with the situation by “trying to better himself,” attempting to learn the French language, among other new skills.

Hulu released the first teaser for Season 2 of “The Great” on Friday, revealing that the period comedy will return on Friday, Nov. 19.

Netflix announced the final season of “Dear White People” will launch Sept. 22 and be a musical season.

Anderson will appear in two episodes of the season as Joanna, the mother of Catherine (Elle Fanning). Joanna is a glamorous socialite from Germany, sometimes also known as the “maestro of marriage” for her abilities to arrange high profile partnerships for her daughters. She has heard rumors of her daughter’s coup and come to Russia to see it for herself. “The Great” has been renewed for Season 2 at Hulu.

The news comes just shy of two months after the debut of the first season on May 15. Like the first, the second season will consist of 10 episodes.

The series is described as a satirical dramedy about the rise of Catherine the Great (Elle Fanning) from outsider to the longest-reigning female ruler in Russia’s history.

Along with Fanning, Season 1 starred Nicholas Hoult, Phoebe Fox, Adam Godley, Gwilym Lee, Charity Wakefield, Douglas Hodge, Sacha Dhawan, Sebastian de Souza, Bayo Gbadamosi, and Belinda Bromilow.

The series was created by Tony McNamara, who also serves as executive producer, with Fanning also executive producing in addition to starring. The Great, Hulu’s period comedy about Catherine the Great from creator and writer Tony McNamara, has been sold to a swathe of international territories.

Starzplay has picked up the series, which stars Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult, in the UK, Ireland, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Benelux, Latin America and Brazil. Channel 4 will also show the comedy in the UK.

More.tv will premiere The Great in Russia, where Catherine the Great ruled, while other deals have been struck with HBO in Austria and Sky in New Zealand.

ViacomCBS Global Distribution Group secured the deals for the show, which is made by Mrc Television. The show charts Catherine the Great’s journey from outsider to the longest-reigning female ruler in Russia’s history, but with only a smattering of historical facts.

Creative Artists Agency (CAA) has hired Ryan Tracey as an agent in the television department, Variety has learned exclusively.

Tracey comes to CAA from UTA, where he had most recently served as head of TV Production. He has represented an numerous television producers during his career, including Aida Rodgers, Kathy Ciric, Anna Dokoza, Ellen Kuras, Mark Winemaker, Joe Incaprera, Paul Garnes, Patrick Markey, Jill Footlick, Julie Herrin, and Sarah Caplan. Tracey began his career in the mailroom at UTA in 2003. He served a brief stint at Paramount Vantage, before returning to UTA in 2008.

In his new role, he will be based out of CAA’s Los Angeles office.

Hulu said Friday that it has set series debut dates for two of its originals, the Elle Fanning-starring The Great from Oscar-nominated The Favourite scribe Tony McNamara, and its animated series Solar Opposites. On Friday, at the 2020 Winter Television Critics Association (TCA) Press Tour, Hulu announced a straight-to-series order for a series starring comedy legends Steve Martin and Martin Short.

Described as a series about “three strangers who share an obsession with true crime and suddenly find themselves wrapped up in one,” it is co-created by Martin and John Hoffman (“Grace & Frankie”), who will serve as executive producers alongside “This Is Us” creator Dan Fogelman. The project hails from 20th Century Fox Television.

“Hulu’s success in original content is driven by highly curated programming from world class talent, said Craig Erwich, Svp of Originals, Hulu. “From the Steve Martin project, second series orders of ‘Ramy’ and ‘Dollface,’ to shows like ‘Little Fires Everywhere,’ our momentum in original content is stronger than ever.”

This series is the latest creative offering to come out of Martin and Short’s 35-plus year friendship and comedic collaboration.
