The Great Starring Elle Fanning Canceled by Hulu After 3 Seasons
Image
Hulu has canceled The Great, starring Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult, after three seasons.

According to Deadline, the cancelation came as a shock due to the perceived popularity of the series. Hulu's The Great is a historical and satirical comedy-drama and has garnered positive reviews, picking up seven Emmy nominations since it premiered in 2020. The Great also won an Emmy for Outstanding Period Costumes in 2022. Both Hoult and Fanny earned two Golden Globe Awards and a Primetime Emmy Award for their roles. Fanning also received numerous other accolades for her performance as Catherine, including a SAG, a Critics Choice, and an Independent Spirit Award. Hulu has not released a statement on the cancelation. Viewership figures were not released for the series; therefore, while likely, it is unclear whether this was a factor

‘The Great’ Canceled After Three Seasons at Hulu
Image
“The Great” is not returning for Season 4 on Hulu, Variety has confirmed.

The satirical take on Catherine The Great’s story painted the historical figure as “an idealistic, romantic young girl, who arrives in Russia for an arranged marriage to the mercurial Emperor Peter. Hoping for love and sunshine, she finds instead a dangerous, depraved, backward world that she resolves to change. All she has to do is kill her husband, beat the church, baffle the military and get the court onside,” according to the official description.

The series starred Elle Fanning as Catherine, Nicholas Hoult, Phoebe Fox, Adam Godley, Gwilym Lee, Charity Wakefield, Douglas Hodge, Sacha Dhawan, Sebastian de Souza, Bayo Gbadamosi and Belinda Bromilow.

Season 3, which was released on May 12, picked up with Catherine and Peter (Hoult) who agree to work on their marriage after Catherine previously had his friends imprisoned and attempted to murder him. The season...

‘The Great’ Canceled at Hulu After Three Seasons
Image
Hulu has canceled its period dramedy The Great after three seasons.

The news comes some three-and-a-half months after the show’s third (and now final) season premiered as a binge release in May. The series stars Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult and explores the relationship of Russian Empress Catherine II and Emperor Peter III in the 18th century.

The show earned seven Emmy nominations over the course of its run, winning the award for outstanding period costumes last year. Fanning and Hoult also earned acting nominations in 2022, and series creator Tony McNamara and director Matt Shakman scored writing and directing nods for the series’ premiere episode in 2020.

The Great was also a critical favorite, earning nearly universally positive reviews across all three of its seasons. How many people watched it, however, remains a mystery as Hulu (like most other streamers) doesn’t share much viewing data and season three did...

‘The Great’ Canceled After 3 Seasons on Hulu
Nicholas Hoult and Elle Fanning in The Great (2020)
“The Great” will not return for a fourth season at Hulu. The streaming service canceled the period drama after three critically acclaimed seasons.

The series was created, written and executive produced by “The Favourite” screenwriter Tony McNamara, and it starred Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult in a kooky tale about the life of Russian empress Catherine the Great.

The third season, which dropped all episodes on May 12, followed Catherine (Fanning) and her husband Peter (Hoult) as they worked on their relationship following her staged coup to take control of Russia. Thankfully, the Season 3 finale provided some closure to Catherine’s story, as it featured her growing into her role as leader while grieving a major loss.

The reasons for the cancellation are unclear, given the show’s garnered strong fan response as well as seven Emmy nominations since debuting in 2020. The drama won the Emmy for Outstanding Period Costumes in...

Shocker! ‘The Great’ Canceled By Hulu After 3 Seasons
Image
Exclusive: Ok, this one hurts. Hulu has canceled fan favorite The Great after three seasons.

The series starred Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult. Created, written and executive produced by Tony McNamara, The Great reinvented the period drama by revisiting the life of Catherine the Great, Russia’s reigning empress from 1762 to 1796. It depicted an iconic character and her place in history through a unique prism.

The third season dropped May 12 and revolved around Catherine (Fanning) and Nicholas (Hoult) working on their marriage.

It’s unclear what made the streamer decide to cancel the comedy, which garnered positive reviews and seven Emmy nominations since launching in 2020. It won an Emmy for Outstanding Period Costumes in 2022, the same year that Fanning and Hoult earned their first nominations for headlining the popular series. Fanning also received numerous other accolades for her performance as Catherine, including a SAG, a Critics Choice, an Independent Spirit...

‘The Great’ Season 3 trailer: Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult try couples therapy [Watch]
Image
Catherine and Peter are going to try and work this out.

On Wednesday, Hulu released the first trailer for Season 3 of “The Great,” which shows its lead couple (played by 2022 Emmy nominees Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult) attempting a royal version of couples’ therapy. It doesn’t seem all that promising. Here’s the official logline provided by Hulu:

Season 3 of “The Great” sees Catherine (Elle Fanning) and Peter (Nicholas Hoult) attempt to make their marriage work after some seemingly insurmountable problems. Peter witnessed his own attempted murder at Catherine’s hands and she also imprisoned all of his friends. On top of this, Peter is at a loose end playing First Husband to Catherine’s reign, so he busies himself with fathering, hunting and salty culinary ventures. ‘The Great’ Season 3 Trailer: Catherine and Peter Try Couples Therapy (Video)
Elle Fanning
Catherine the Great and her husband are headed to couples therapy.

After an assassination gone wrong left the fate — and the marriage — of Catherine the Great (Elle Fanning) and Peter (Nicholas Hoult) to hang in the balance, the oddly suited pair are determined to smooth over their issues by talking it out in the trailer for “The Great” Season 3, which premieres May 12 on Hulu.

“We’ve had some difficulties,” Catherine admits to what can only be assumed to be a therapist in the trailer, while Peter adds, “apparently marriage has challenges.”

“There was some blood shed,” Catherine continues, with Peter clarifying, “she tried to kill me.”

“Well, that shakes a man,” Peter says before Catherine asks their counselor how the pair can begin trust each other. Their advisor responds simply: “Faith,” which brings both Catherine and Peter to the agreement that this optimistic answer was “annoying.”

The Great Season 3 Trailer: Catherine & Peter Attempt Marriage Counseling After Turmoil
Image
The trailer for The Great season 3 teases lead characters Catherine and Peter unexpectedly trying to repair their uniquely complicated marriage. The Hulu original series, created by Tony McNamara, has already seen two successful seasons as a satirical black comedy drama loosely based on the life and rise to power of the longest-reigning Empress of Russia, Catherine II. Starring Elle Fanning as the titular ruler and Nicholas Hoult as her pompous husband Peter III, The Great season 2 left off with the central pair's tumultuous relationship becoming more vicious than ever as Catherine unsuccessfully conspires to have Peter murdered and imprisons his friends.

Hulu released the trailer for The Great season 3, teasing a rowdy and raunchy upcoming installment. The trailer shows Catherine and Peter engaged in what appears to be marriage counseling to address their increasingly harrowing marital issues amid Catherine's growing ambitions as Russia's ruler.

On the other hand, Peter experiences...

‘The Great’ Season 3 Trailer: Catherine and Peter Try to Reconcile
Image
Catherine and Peter attempt to figure out a way to move forward after the events of season two in the trailer for Hulu’s The Great season three. Can Catherine actually put into effect changes that will improve the lives of the peasants? Will Catherine and Peter ever be able to trust each other? Since The Great‘s only very loosely based on actual events, we’ll have to wait until season three arrives for the answers to those questions.

Elle Fanning stars as Catherine and Nicholas Hoult returns as Peter. The cast also includes Phoebe Fox as Marial, Sacha Dhawan as Count Orlo, Belinda Bromilow as Aunt Elizabeth, and Adam Godley as Archie. Gwilym Lee plays Grigor Dymov, Charity Wakefield is Georgina, Douglas Hodge is General Velementov, and Bayo Gbadamosi plays Arkady.

A woman sitting across from them says, simply, “Faith.”

“Annoying answer,” Catherine retorts. “Agreed,” says Peter.

On Friday, the creators and stars of The Great stopped by TCA to tease the second season of their acclaimed Hulu comedy, which is set to premiere on November 19.

Creator, writer and EP Tony McNamara, EP Marian Macgowan, and EP-actor Nicholas Hoult were joined on the panel by EP-actor Elle Fanning, who touched on a “parental theme” running through the season, with regard to her character, Catherine the Great.

“Catherine [is] grappling with the fact that she’s going to become a mother soon,” said Fanning. “The baby is also kind of her protection because she knows while [he’s] in there she’s safe, and Peter’s not going to kill her.”

Hoult noted that for at least part of Season 2, his character Peter III is “in imprisonment and confinement.” The overthrown Russian Emperor will deal with the situation by “trying to better himself,” attempting to learn the French language, among other new skills.

‘Dear White People’ Final (Musical) Season to Premiere in September on Netflix (TV News Roundup)
Image
Netflix announced the final season of “Dear White People” will launch Sept. 22 and be a musical season.

“Dear White People,” an extension of the film of the same name by Justin Simien, deals with issues of race, class and sexuality on that college campus. Logan Browning’s Sam White hosts a radio show within the series that is also titled “Dear White People” and is where...
