Windheim had a thriving career as a character tenor in opera; he sang with the Metropolitan Opera in New York--logging in over 325 performances there from 1928 to 1936. He mainly performed small parts but also some 'character leads' like Smetana's Vasek and Wagner's David and Mime. He took part in four operatic world premieres.

In eight seasons at New York's Metropolitan Opera between 1928 and 1936, he sang some 328 times, appearing in 42 operas in 56 different roles. During this period, he made at least one recording, a Columbia 78 in which he sang a Polish song on one side and, on the other, "Sonny Boy" in Polish!
