The Best Great Gatsby Adaptation, According To Rotten Tomatoes
Image
The debate about what constitutes The Great American Novel is never-ending, yet F. Scott Fitzgerald's "The Great Gatsby" always finds its way into this conversation. It might be tempting to simply reduce the author's work to an enduring portrayal of the Roaring Twenties, but Fitzgerald's book also cuts through the illusions while sustaining the enthralling mystery surrounding its titular figure. Once the mist dissipates, and both Jay Gatsby and his (only) friend Nick Carraway are laid bare for who they are, what remains is a profound sense of emptiness. Don't get me wrong: "The Great Gatsby" is a story about the inherent hollowness of spectacle, obscene wealth, and relationships of convenience that have the illusion of depth. However, once we confront the rare flashes of moving sincerity in a tale so luridly tragic, the empty lure of the green light at the heart of the novel takes on a terribly haunting sheen.

This 98-Year-Old Western Movie Was Groundbreaking For The Genre (In 2 Big Ways)
Image
This silent Western film was groundbreaking for its time due to its portrayal of First Americans in a sympathetic light and its criticism of white settlers' treatment of Indigenous people. Filmed on location in Monument Valley and utilizing 1,000 First Americans as extras, the film sought authenticity and conscientiousness in its depiction of the Native American experience. While the novel and film faced backlash for challenging American federal policies and the mistreatment of Indigenous people, it paved the way for a progressive portrayal of First Americans in Westerns, contrasting with later films that engaged in racist casting practices.

Even nearly 100 years later, there's a silent Western movie that was not only groundbreaking for the genre in 1925, but remains so even to this day, for two reasons in particular. At the time it was made in Pre-Code Hollywood, Westerns, like gangster films and other genres, were creatively daring and different from anything...

U.K. Theater Review: ‘Dusty’
Adam West, Richard Bakalyan, Byron Keith, Lesley Gore, Frank Gorshin, James O'Hara, Leslie Parrish, Cliff Robertson, Dusty Springfield, Burt Ward, Estelle Winwood, and Al Wyatt Sr. in Batman (1966)
Ashes to ashes, Dusty to Dusty. Almost 20 years after her death, the loss of Dusty Springfield still stings on these shores. Sniffles ring out at the end of Jonathan Harvey’s jukebox musical “Dusty,” as footage of the iconic songstress’s funeral spills across the stage. So when actress Katherine Kingsley reappears for a final encore, the spit of Springfield in her prime, it feels like a reincarnation of sorts. Beneath that familiar blonde beehive, Kingsley stands still, smiles the slightest of smiles and unleashes that familiar earthy, authoritative voice, soaring off into “You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me.”

Hers is a complex performance in a script bent on slightness. Like the Kinks musical “Sunny Afternoon,” Dusty weaves a great artist’s body of work into the threads of an all-too-human life. Harvey might fold in sweet lifelong friendships and broken relationships to tug on the heartstrings,...

Cortez Part IV: Leading Ladies and Marriage to Tragic Drug-Addicted Wife
Ricardo Cortez
Ricardo Cortez in 'Ten Cents a Dance,' with Barbara Stanwyck. No matter how unthankful the role, whether hero or heel – or, not infrequently, a combination of both – Cortez left his bedroom-eyed, mellifluous-voiced imprint in his pre-Production Code talkies. Besides Barbara Stanwyck, during the 1920s and 1930s Cortez made love to and/or life difficult for, a whole array of leading ladies of that era, including Bebe Daniels, Gloria Swanson, Betty Compson, Betty Bronson, Greta Garbo, Florence Vidor, Claudette Colbert, Mary Astor, Kay Francis, Joan Crawford, Irene Dunne, Joan Blondell, and Loretta Young*. (See previous post: “Ricardo Cortez Q&A: From Latin Lover to Multiethnic Heel.”) Not long after the coming of sound, Ricardo Cortez was mostly relegated to playing subordinate roles to his leading ladies – e.g., Kay Francis, Irene Dunne, Claudette Colbert – or leads in “bottom half of the double bill” programmers at Warner Bros. or on loan to other studios. Academy Awards Film Series: From Class Distinctions to Incest - Adult Themes in First-Rate, Long-Thought-Lost Drama
'Sorrell and Son' with H.B. Warner and Alice Joyce. 'Sorrell and Son' 1927 movie: Long thought lost, surprisingly effective father-love melodrama stars a superlative H.B. Warner Partially shot on location in England and produced independently by director Herbert Brenon at Joseph M. Schenck's United Artists, the 1927 Sorrell and Son is a skillful melodrama about paternal devotion in the face of both personal and social adversity. This long-thought-lost version of Warwick Deeping's 1925 bestseller benefits greatly from the veteran Brenon's assured direction, deservedly shortlisted in the first year of the Academy Awards.* Crucial to the film's effectiveness, however, is the portrayal of its central character, a war-scarred Englishman who sacrifices it all for the happiness of his son. Luckily, the London-born H.B. Warner, best remembered for playing Jesus Christ in another 1927 release, Cecil B. DeMille's The King of Kings, is the embodiment of honesty, selflessness, and devotion. Less is...

Redford on TCM: Dismal 'Gatsby,' Oscar winner 'Africa'
Robert Redford: 'The Great Gatsby' and 'The Way We Were' tonight on Turner Classic Movies Turner Classic Movies' Star of the Month Robert Redford returns this evening with three more films: two Sydney Pollack-directed efforts, Out of Africa and The Way We Were, and Jack Clayton's film version of F. 'The Great Gatsby': Robert Redford as Jay Gatsby Released by Paramount Pictures, the 1974 film version of The Great Gatsby had prestige oozing from just about every cinematic pore. The film was based on what some consider the greatest American novel ever written. Francis Ford Coppola, whose directing credits included the blockbuster The Godfather, and who, that same year, was responsible for both The Godfather Part II and The Conversation, penned the adaptation. Multiple Tony winner David Merrick (Becket,...

Long Before Downey Jr. There Was Gillette: Lost Holmes Movie Has Been Unearthed
'Sherlock Holmes' movie found at Cinémathèque Française (image: William Gillette in 'Sherlock Holmes') Sherlock Holmes, a long-thought-lost 1916 feature starring stage performer and playwright William Gillette in the title role, has been discovered in the vaults of the Cinémathèque Française. Directed by the all-but-forgotten Arthur Berthelet for the Chicago-based Essanay production company, the approximately 90-minute movie is supposed to be not only the sole record of William Gillette's celebrated performance as Arthur Conan Doyle's detective, but also the only surviving Gillette film.* In the late 19th century, William Gillette himself wrote the play Sherlock Holmes, which turned out to be a mash-up of various stories and novels featuring the detective, chiefly the short stories "A Scandal in Bohemia" and "The Final Problem." ("May I marry Holmes?" Gillette, while vying for the role, telegraphed Conan Doyle. The latter replied, "You may marry or murder or do What you like with him.

Many film versions of 'The Great Gatsby'
Baz Luhrmann in Gatsby le Magnifique (2013)
Los Angeles, May 15: Australian director Baz Luhrmann's "The Great Gasby" is only the latest in a series of screen adaptations of F. Scott Fitzgerald's book. From a silent version to, of course, the famous film starring Robert Redford and Mia Farrow, the novel has had several cinematic renditions.

The first attempt to bring the book on silver screen was by director Herbert Brenon in 1926. The movie was a silent film starring Warner Baxter, Lois Wilson and Neil Hamilton in lead roles. The movie was "rotten", said Zelda Fitzgerald, wife of Scott Fitzgerald. However, the prints of the movie were lost later and no archives are said to.

Gatsby Opening Weekend B.O.: Ahead or Behind Titanic?
Leonardo DiCaprio The Great Gatsby movie box office: DiCaprio’s second biggest opening ever — but trailing Titanic in ticket sales The Great Gatsby movie adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel earned $50.08m at the North American box office this past weekend, including $3.25 million from late Thursday night showings, according to weekend box-office actuals found at Box Office Mojo. Despite mostly poor reviews — The Great Gatsby has a 32% approval rating and 5.6/10 average among Rotten Tomatoes‘ top critics — the Baz Luhrmann-directed take on the love story between Leonardo DiCaprio’s Jay Gatsby and Carey Mulligan’s Daisy Buchanan far surpassed the expectations of both distributor Warner Bros. and box-office pundits. In fact, The Great Gatsby trailed only Robert Downey Jr’s Iron Man 3, which collected $72.52 million at the domestic box office this past weekend. (Photo: Leonardo DiCaprio in The Great Gatsby.) Partly thanks to 3D surcharges and a strong female contingent of ticket-buyers,...

Gatsby to Become DiCaprio's Second Biggest Debut Weekend Ever?
Leonardo DiCaprio The Great Gatsby movie weekend box office: DiCaprio’s second biggest opening ever? (Photo: Leonardo DiCaprio in The Great Gatsby, with Carey Mulligan) Leonardo DiCaprio stars as Jay Gatsby in Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby movie adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic 1920s novel. A risky move? Well, if so, it has clearly paid off. Although The Great Gatsby will not top the North American box office this weekend, it’ll land in a remarkably (and surprisingly) strong second slot. (Photo: Leonardo DiCaprio in The Great Gatsby movie adaptation, with Carey Mulligan as Daisy Buchanan.) Robert Downey Jr’s Iron Man 3 will easily lead the domestic box-office charge with approximately $65-70m, after plummeting 71% on Friday, compared to the previous week. True, opening-day Friday also included the box-office take from Thursday late night showings, but, for comparison’s sake, The Avengers was down 64% during that same time frame.

Luhrmann's Glitzy Gatsby Adaptation Way Overperforming at Us/Canada box office?
The Great Gatsby 2013 movie box office: Way overperforming? (Photo: Leonardo DiCaprio in The Great Gatsby) The Great Gatsby 2013 movie adaptation directed by Baz Luhrmann, and starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan will not top the North American box office this weekend. That’s the not-so-good news. But then again, no one was expecting The Great Gatsby to soar past Robert Downey Jr’s special-effects-laden Iron Man 3. True, both movies are in 3D, but … maybe if Jay Gatsby’s hair gel were capable of blowing up all of New England or something, then it’d have had a chance. (Updated The Great Gatsby weekend box office estimate.) Now, the (really) good news: The Great Gatsby, with the assistance of 3D surcharges and a large percentage of female ticket-buyers, may open north of $50m at 3,525 North American locations, according to early, rough estimates found at Deadline.com. As per Deadline’s "sources,...

Review: 'Bill W.' Draws You Into The Trials And The Triumphs Of Alcoholics Anonymous
“Bill W.” tells the story of the largely unsung hero William G. Wilson, the co-founder of Alcoholics Anonymous, an organization that has saved the lives of thousands and thousands of people. The documentary, by directing and producing team Kevin Hanlon and Dan Carracino, is an effort to tell a relatively unknown story about a man who has been a guiding light for many other relative unknowns. The title stands in the tradition of A.A., where members are granted absolute anonymity, both to protect them from the stigma of alcoholism and to shelter the organization from potential media hounds. Even as his organization grew to include tens of thousands of members, Wilson’s identity was not revealed to the public until his death in 1971: many recovering alcoholics knew their savior only as “Bill.”

Wilson was an alcoholic himself, a Wall Street employee and self-proclaimed lush who switched from using...

Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, Carey Mulligan, Joel Edgerton: The Great Gatsby Photo
Tobey Maguire, Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan, Joel Edgerton, The Great Gatsby In Baz Luhrmann's film adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby (co-written with Craig Pearce), Leonardo DiCaprio (he of Titanic, The Aviator, and Inception) plays the title role of the very rich party animal Jay Gatsby, who has an adulterous affair with the married Daisy Buchanan (An Education and Shame's Carey Mulligan), whose husband, Tom (Animal Kingdom and Warrior's Joel Edgerton), also happens to be having an affair with another woman, Myrtle (Confessions of a Shopaholic and Wedding Crashers' Isla Fisher). As the story's narrator, Nick Carraway, Spider-Man's Tobey Maguire tries to keep all the different affairs straight, so to speak. The previous big-screen Gatsbys were Warner Baxter in 1926, Alan Ladd in 1949, and Robert Redford in 1974. The previous big-screen Daisys were Lois Wilson, Betty Field, and Mia Farrow. Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan, Tobey Maguire, Joel Edgerton, Jason Clarke, and Isla Fisher star in this latest big-screen version of F. Scott Fitzgerald's most famous novel. Moulin Rouge's Baz Luhrmann, who became major world news after injuring his head a week or so ago, directs. ‘The Fighter’ & ‘The King’s Speech’ Lead Screen Actors Guild Award Nominees
Today the nominations for the 17th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards was released. The King’s Speech and The Fighter received the most nominations, with four each. Thankfully the Guild seems to know what they are doing unlike The Golden Globes who pretty much screwed up all the nominations.

The nominees here are usually a very strong indication of how the acting award nominees will play out at the Oscars. King’s Speech has long been an Oscar favourite, but David O. Russell’s The Fighter has gained considerable steam in the past few weeks. Last year, 19 out of 20 SAG nominees went to the Oscars as well so you can be sure that The Fighter and King’s Speech will get a best picture nomination. The 17th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards will be simulcast live on TNT and TBS on January 20th. See the complete list below.

17th Annual SAG Awards Nominations
The Screen Acors Guild has released their award nominations for their upcoming 17th annual award ceremony, which will take place on January 30, 2011.

There are some great nominations here. My favorite picks include Christian Bale for his role in The Fighter, Natalie Portman in her role in Black Swan, and Jesse Eisenberg for his role in The Social Network. As much as I love most of these films, I'm surprised that Inception is no where to be seen. That was one of the best films of the year and it seems to be escaping a lot of the nominations in all the award ceremonies this year.

Check out the list of Film and TV nominations below and tell us what your favorite are!

SAG Nominees Announced - Chris Colfer Up for Lifetime Achievement Award
Okay, totally kidding about the Colfer Lifetime Achievement Award thing - that will be going to Ernest Borgnine. But does it seem to you that the kid who plays Kurt Hummel is getting an awful lot of awards season love? (And wouldn't McHale's Navy have been so much better with him in it?)

The latest outpouring of Colfer acclaim comes from the Screen Actors Guild who announced their 17th annual SAG nominees this morning.

The Glee cast is up for a comedy ensemble award, but Colfer was the only cast member other than Jane Lynch to be recognized individually. And given who he's up against he's almost certain to be the frontrunner!

Another bit of good news for a Glbt favorite, The Kids Are All Right, scored individual acting nods for Annete Bening, Mark Rufallo, and also a nomination for Outstanding Performance by a Cast.

Screen Actors Guild Award Nominees Announced & It’s Less “Colorful” Than The Golden Globes
The complete list of nominations for the 17th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards follows below. The ceremony will be held on January 30th, 2011.

Nothing really to highlight here, unfortunately. SAG voters apparently didn’t care for Halle Berry’s performance as much as the Golden Globes did, because she’s not on this list. And neither is Idris Elba, who was also nominated for a Golden Globe. The cast of For Colored Girls got no love either.

The significance here is that SAG nominees and winners are voted on by members of the union – essentially, their peers.

But one thing that should be obvious by now is that the Oscar race is going to come down to 4 films and the performances in those films: The Social Network, Black Swan, The King’s Speech, and The Fighter. I still have to see the last 2.

Here’s the full list:

When Love Is Not Enough Explores the Story of the Founder of Al-Anon
Hallmark Hall of Fame (1951)
When Love Is Not Enough is the perfect Hallmark Hall of Fame movie. It has a strong message wrapped up in an interesting story performed by superb actors. Winona Ryder and Barry Pepper star in the story of Lois Wilson (Ryder), wife of Bill Wilson (Pepper) the founder of Alcoholics Anonymous. Lois was the founder of Al-Anon, the organization for the families of alcoholics. This is the second Hallmark film about this family. In 1989 James Woods starred in My Name Is Bill W., which was focused on the founder of AA. This time out it is his wife's turn and her story is a heart-wrenching one. The movie follows the Wilsons' love story from 1914 till 1951. During that time Lois supported and endured her love for her husband. He started out a casual drinker but soon developed into a...

Her Name is Winona, and She's an Alcoholics Anonymous Co-Founder
· Let's hear it for Winona Ryder! For the second consecutive day, her comeback blazes ahead with news of her casting in When Love Is Not Enough: The Lois Wilson Story. Ok, so maybe not "blazes ahead," but maybe "strolls ahead at a nice, consistent clip": The Hallmark Hall of Fame production will feature Ryder as the title character, who co-founded Alcoholics Anonymous with her sobered-up husband Bill in 1951. Barry Pepper will play the famous Bill W., and the scorching premiere party will feature signature cocktails co-sponsored by O'Doul's and Kool-Aid. [Variety]

Meatballs gives theater owners a stomachache, Nine finds a friend in Mickey Mouse, and more Hollywood Ink after the jump.
