A writer’s screenplay is optioned for a fee tied to the film’s budget. That budget is later increased when a big name is brought on to star. Are the writer’s managers, who’re also producers on the movie, obligated to disclose the bump and renegotiate their client’s pay?

The answer to that question could be yes, with an appeals court reviving a lawsuit from screenwriter Kurt McLeod against Zero Gravity Management over an alleged conflict of interest when it negotiated his deal for writing Copshop. On Thursday, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals reversed dismissal of the suit from a federal judge, who found last year that Zero Gravity founders Eric and Mark Williams don’t have to face claims accusing them of prioritizing their payouts for producing the movie at the expense of their client by failing to disclose that the film’s budget had been substantially raised.

Gerard Butler has become known as one of the most recognizable action stars on the planet, but he’s no one-trick pony. Butler has starred in rom-coms and dramas in his career that see him play characters who are more effective with their words than their fists. One of those films is A Family Man — previously titled The Headhunter’s Calling. Paramount Global Content Distribution has picked up rights to Peacock’s Miami narcotics-dealer family drama M.I.A., which is from Ozark co-creator Bill Dubuque and MRC and stars Shannon Gisela. Buyers will be introduced to the series over coming days.

Hundreds of acquisitions execs are expected on the Paramount lot, where other shows such as Boston Blue and Sheriff County are also among the wares on offer following last week’s Upfront pick-ups.

As for M.I.A., it’s going international after Peacock gave it straight-to-series order last year. Synopsis reads: “Running drugs is a family affair for Etta Tiger Jonze (Shannon), but when the family business is threatened, Etta is thrust into a life she never expected, forcing her to use her wits to survive as she navigates Miami’s criminal underground.”

SXSW on Monday said that Matthew Shear’s Fantasy Life, Ben Affleck and Jon Bernthal’s reteam The Accountant 2 and Paige Bethmann’s documentary Remaining Native were among the big winners of the 32nd annual festival’s Audience Awards.

The news of the honors across the Austin fest’s competition, narrative, documentary, shorts, TV and Xr Experience sidebars comes after the 2025 edition revealed its juried awards last week, with honors going to Amy Wang‘s thriller Slanted for Best Narrative Feature among others.

Fantasy Life, Shear’s feature writing and directorial debut, won the marquee Narrative Feature Audience Award. It stars Shear as a man who suffers a panic attack and stumbles into a job babysitting his psychiatrist’s three granddaughters, where he begins to fall for the girls’ mother, played by Amanda Peet. Peet earlier won a special jury prize for acting.

The Motion Picture Association ratings board recently revealed that they’ve given The Accountant 2 an R rating for strong violence, and language throughout. Exclusive: ITV is among the first buyers to swoop for Mark Williams crime drama Safe Harbor here at the London TV Screenings.

We can reveal the UK broadcaster is joined by Ireland’s Virgin Media Television and Australia’s Sbs in acquiring the series from distributor Eccho Rights.

The eight-part series, which has been building buzz over the past year, will premiere on ITV streamer Itvx and Virgin in Ireland in the spring, with Sbs launching it later in the year. The sales are among the highest-profile deals unveiled at the London TV Screenings so far this week.

The Motion Picture Association ratings board recently revealed that they’ve given The Accountant 2 an R rating for strong violence, and language throughout.
