Judy Page Dies: Veteran Talent Agent For Susan Smith, Mitchell K. Stubbs Was 76
Image
Veteran talent agent Judy Page, whose clients included Penny Johnson Jerald and Cch Pounder, died February 24 at Kindred Hospital in Los Angeles after a brief illness. She was 76.

Page was a talent agent for Susan Smith & Associates for 18 years. After the firm closed, she became vice president of Mitchell K. Stubbs & Associates agency before retiring in 2018.

Born in Columbus, Oh, Page was raised by her father and aunt, who she called “Mama.” She attended Ohio State University and worked for the state for several years before moving to Los Angeles. She told her dad she had landed in Beverly Hills, failing to mention she was actually living out of her car for a few weeks while parked in the 90210 zip code.

Soon afterwards, Page landed her first job in the industry, working for publicist Ronni Chasen. She then went on to work at Warner Bros in the casting department’s secretarial pool.

Judy Page, a talent agent who spent 35 years working for agencies run by Susan Smith and Mitchell K. Stubbs, died Feb. 24 at Kindred Hospital Los Angeles after a brief illness, publicist Richard Hoffman announced. She was 76.

Born in Columbus, Ohio, on June 22, 1948, Page was raised by her father and her aunt. She attended Ohio State University and worked for the state of Ohio for several years before moving to Los Angeles in 1976.

She told her dad that she was living in Beverly Hills, and technically that was true — she was living in her car, parked in the city, for a couple of weeks.

Her first job in the industry was working for publicist Ronni Chasen.

Page joined Warner Bros. in its secretarial pool and landed in the studio’s casting department, where she caught the eye of acclaimed casting director Marion Dougherty, who hired her permanently.

The Only Major Actors Still Alive From Sanford And Son
Image
Love it or hate it, "Sanford and Son" is one of the most groundbreaking American sitcoms of all time. The NBC series about a widowed get-rich-quick schemer (Redd Foxx) living in Los Angeles' Watts neighborhood with his adult son (Demond Wilson) was an undeniable hit during its run. It ushered in a Golden Age of Black family sitcoms thanks to dynamic performances, frank dialogue written from a working-class Black perspective, and its often uproarious scripts. It was such a ratings juggernaut that it's often credited for killing off its much more sanitized competition, "The Brady Bunch."

"It was a groundbreaking series," Eric Deggans wrote in a series retrospective for the official Emmys website, noting that "Before 'Good Times' and 'The Jeffersons' would make TV history with powerful stories focused on Black families, 'Sanford and Son' would explore the prickly relationship between a middle-aged Black man and his son.

Paul Schrader
Review: Paul Schrader’s Neo-Noir Thriller Hardcore from Kl Studio Classics Blu-ray
Paul Schrader
Paul Schrader’s Hardcore is one of the writer-director’s most unabashedly autobiographical films. The opening montage of winter in Grand Rapids, Michigan, contains shots of the street where he grew up, his family members, and places he worked. Schrader has also mentioned in interviews that George S. Scott’s Calvinist furniture manufacturer, Jake Van Dorn, is an equivocal portrait of his father.

That entire sequence is shot through with ambivalence. The Van Dorn clan is depicted with warmth and hominess, but there are cracks evident in the facade: the disapproving comments about modern media; the passive-aggressive way in which the emotionally distant Jake talks down to a female employee; and the absence of a presiding maternal figure.

When his daughter, Kristen (Ilah Davis), inexplicably goes missing on a church trip to California, Jake is determined to track her down with the help of Andy Mast (Peter Boyle), a morally...

10 Actors Who Appeared In TV Shows Spinoffs Of Their Movies
Image
Christina Ricci has been a mainstay in Hollywood for 30 years, breaking out due to The Addams Family movies of the 1990s. Perfecting the role to differentiate it from previous portrayals of the character, she is still synonymous with the character to this day, so it isn't shocking that she will be appearing in Wednesday, a new show focusing on the character, coming to Netflix on November 23rd.

But Ricci is not the only actor who has appeared in a TV version of their movie. Throughout film history, numerous actors have stopped by the small screen to give a nod to their TV counterparts.

Ice Cube: Are We There Yet (2005)

Ice Cube is inarguably one of the greatest rappers of all time and his movie career, appropriately, began with more adult-orientated films. However, Are We There Yet? changed that, putting the actor in a fish-out-of-water role. It not only spawned a...

Marla Gibbs at an event for Madea: Protection de témoins (2012)
Marla Gibbs told a select group of friends and family she would be on the live special for ABC’s “The Jeffersons” in May, but they wouldn’t believe her since she wasn’t in any of the promotional materials. That’s because producers Norman Lear and Jimmy Kimmel wanted it to be a surprise to audiences when Gibbs reprised her classic role of Florence Johnston.

In our exclusive interview (watch the video above), she reveals, “When I read the script I said, ‘This is the same show I did word for word,’ and of course I remembered it all…. the moves and everything. It was the thing that changed my life, so you don’t forget it.”

Must-Watch Music Videos: Pyramid Vritra Spools Juxtaposition
Hal Williams, better known as rapper and producer Pyramid Vritra has released the latest visuals for “Spool” from his debut record Indra. Writing and making beats since he was 10 years old, Williams got his start in Atlanta, first linking up with the Nrk collective and then releasing music as The Jet Age of Tomorrow with Matt Martians via Odd Future. Now based in La, the soft-spoken rapper has a lot to get out with this first release. The video is a complex set of images, which are at first grounded and then seemingly unhinged from reality. “Spool” has the air and feel of an artist who is just getting started showing us what he can really do. Williams’ obsession with metaphor and juxtaposition is something the rapper tackles at length on the record. He describes this emotional layout as a "fluidity and calm in the midst of complexity.” That sentiment...

Marla Gibbs at an event for Madea: Protection de témoins (2012)
Any child of the ’80s will be happy to know that the cast of 227 is as entertaining in person as they were on NBC from 1985 to 1990. For our annual EW Reunions issue (on newsstands now), we gathered Marla Gibbs, Jackée Harry, Regina King, and Hal Williams in downtown Los Angeles for a chat about what made their Washington, D.C.-set sitcom so memorable. Here are the episodes the cast loves the most.

Marla Gibbs I always liked the one where Calvin thought Brenda was interested in him. And he said, “I like you.” And she said, “And I like you!

Guess Who
Movie buffs need not fret.

Despite taking a bite out of the original title, Guess Who actually has a lot more in common with Meet the Parents -- in both content and tone -- than it does with Guess Who's Coming to Dinner.

At the same time, this smartly cast romantic comedy manages to address still-relevant issues of race without the preachiness that aged less than gracefully in Stanley Kramer's 1967 serving of social commentary.

Mix in a pair of inspired performances by Bernie Mac and Ashton Kutcher, and you've got a certified crowd-tickler with a lot more substance than the last Focker family gathering.

Mac, a man with one of the best slow burns in the business, essentially tries the Spencer Tracy role on for size as Percy Jones, a proud family man and bank loan officer who's about to mark the 25th anniversary of his marriage to Marilyn (Judith Scott) with a big outdoor party at their suburban Cranford, N.J., home.

Arriving for the festivities is their daughter Theresa (Zoe Saldana), along with her as-yet-unintroduced boyfriend, whom Percy envisions as a suitable beau with the looks of a Denzel, the smarts of a Colin Powell and the competitive edge of a Tiger Woods.

Enter Ashton Kutcher.

Needless to say, Kutcher's Simon Green doesn't exactly hit it off wonderfully with overprotective Mr. Jones, and things go from bad to worse when the truth is revealed about financier Green's current state of employment -- as in freshly terminated -- which puts a bit of a crimp in the young couple's plans to announce their engagement.

Key to the success of Guess Who is that adversarial Mac-Kutcher chemistry, and both are working at the top of their games.

While Mac, who actually brought the update idea to producer Jenno Topping, has previously demonstrated his sharply honed big-screen comedic chops, Kutcher cements his post-That '70s Show future with what is easily his most accomplished feature film role to date.

Providing very capable backup, meanwhile, is Saldana as Kutcher's grounded fiancee and Scott as Mac's tolerant-to-a-point wife.

Also entertaining are vet Hal Williams as Mac's no-nonsense father and Kellee Stewart as Mac's youngest daughter, who figures that her sister's bringing home a white boy will provide her with a whole lot of leeway in the good-girl department.

The film also serves as a personal best for director Kevin Rodney Sullivan, who after Barbershop 2 and How Stella Got Her Groove Back has found a more assured comfort zone when it comes to blending comedy and elements of greater social significance, as provided here by the script credited to David Ronn & Jay Scherick and Peter Tolan.

While the mix doesn't always flow smoothly, especially in the protracted third act, there's sufficient promise on the menu to suggest the distinct possibility of a return dinner engagement.
