Frank Lammers, Egbert Jan Weeber, and Sanne Langelaar in Armada (2015)
Netherlands Film Festival kicks off amid drama
Frank Lammers, Egbert Jan Weeber, and Sanne Langelaar in Armada (2015)
At the Holland Film Meeting (Hfm) several new projects and new policy initiatives have been announced.

Hfm (Sept 24-27) is the industry component of the Netherlands Film Festival, the 10-day event in Utrecht showcasing he best in Dutch film and which culminates with the most prestigious prizes in Dutch Film - the Golden Calf awards.

The festival itself started in rancorous fashion with the news that producer Klaas de Jong had pulled Roel Reiné’s seafaring epic Michiel de Ruyter from the competition.

De Jong was unhappy that the film hadn’t been nominated for a Best Picture award despite being one of the most commercial Dutch movies of the year.

He complained in the local press that the awards were too arthouse-oriented and didn’t pay enough attention to films that reached the popular audience.

Festival director Willemien van Aalst strongly denied that the festival was ignoring populist fare.

“The Netherlands...

Alternative Tiff 2010 Picks: #1. Koen Mortier's 22nd of May
#1. 22nd of May Director: Koen Mortier Cast: Sam Louwyck, Titus De Voogdt, Norman Baert, Wim Willaert, Jan Hammenecker Distributor: Rights Available. Buzz: It's a major coup that Tiff managed to land the world premiere to this sampling of dystopian madness. From the ultra talented creator behind Ex Drummer (which was shown at Tiff in 2007 and its charged content probably sent a couple of patrons out the doors early), the mind blowing trailer below only demonstrates that Mortier's packed tool box contains some gnarly heavy duty visual tricks.    The Gist: Sam wakes up, gets ready and goes to do his daily job. And then the unexpected happens. A bomb explodes in the center of the shopping mall where he works. He drags himself towards the entrance to save the victims. One by one he pulls them out, until something terrible takes place. In complete hysteria he runs off till he falls down from exhaustion.
