Received a degree in Mathematics from the University of Durham in 1980.

As of 2024, has appeared in three films that were nominated for the Best Picture Oscar: Chambre avec vue... (1985), Retour à Howards End (1992) and Gosford Park (2001).

He trained as an actor at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.

Became an Associate Member of RADA.

Has four children with Shana Magraw: Barnaby John Loxley (born in 1988), Florence Hannah Mary (born in 1992), Nathaniel Jerome (born in 1996) and Jesse Jack (born in 2000).

I'm buggered if I'm going to go and sit on my arse in LA. I think it's a graveyard for British actors; there are an awful lot who just disappear. My life is here, I love England, and there's lots of good work here.

I am lucky enough to find learning my lines really easy. The trouble is that I can't remember anything else, and as soon as I start preparing for a role, telephone numbers, children's birthdays and the names of favorite wines just fly out of the window. It's a real curse.

And with four children and a large house to keep, I find that I can't spend quite as much as I would like to on my wine. I would love to start buying en primeur [the annual opening offer for the best châteaux] but usually get by spending between £5 and £10 a bottle, mainly at Majestic and Oddbins.
