As showrunner, Russell T. Davies, has proven beyond any doubt in the latest fan-service-heavy season that Doctor Who has a rich history that its current regime would love us to look back on. In doing so, fans often look to Davies' first era at the helm, particularly the opening 2005 revival season that saw Ninth Doctor Christopher Eccleston tackle all manner of terrifying villains alongside Billie Piper's Rose Tyler – from the politically satirical Slitheen to the chilling Empty Child and eventually the iconic Daleks.

However, according to Radio Times, the Daleks were almost entirely different in the modern revival, with their fear factor best illustrated in their opening episode, "Dalek," nearly completely eradicated. The episode's writer, Robert Shearman, has spilled on the process of reviving the iconic killing machines, admitting "I didn't know what I was doing," at a recent event held at the BFI Southbank, in partnership with the Doctor Who Appreciation Society.

Robert Shearman was the man who brought the Daleks into the 21st century for the rebooted Doctor Who. He wrote the intense and critically acclaimed Season 1 episode "Dalek."

But "Dalek" was nearly a different beast indeed. Showrunner Russell T Davies wasn't sure exactly how dark Doctor Who could go, considering it was going out for a family audience. It's hard to imagine the Daleks without their trademark cry of "Exterminate!" but for a while it genuinely seemed like they wouldn't be exterminating anybody. Shearman explained it all during an appearance at the BFI Southbank for the Doctor Who Appreciation Society, via Radio Times.

"You'd go into the first meetings and Russell would say, we're going to explore all these different tones. [But] we weren't sure in the first couple of drafts if we could even kill people on-screen anymore... for a family audience-type show that we hadn't had on TV for about 15 years,...

For anyone who watches “The Way Home” knows that sometimes, it can get a little confusing with so many different time periods going on at once. That’s the case for the executive producers too. During an FYC panel for the hit Hallmark Channel series on May 8, the showrunners admitted that it takes a lot of work and research to keep everything straight.

“We start at the end and then kind of work backward. We had a wonderful plan right from the start when Marly Reed created the show and wrote a beautiful bible for it. Alex and I were just so lucky to be part of it and develop it,” said co-showrunner Heather Conkie, referring to her daughter and co-showrunner, Alexandra Clarke. “We really had a three, four, five-year plan? And we’re now working on the third year. We see what worked from the first two years and it’s a process.

At first glance, The Way Home was an off-brand original series for Hallmark, thanks to time travel being utilized to tell a multi-generational story.

However, the series is synonymous with the heartwarming programming at the heart of Hallmark's schedule.

The Way Home Season 2 Renewal Status

Hallmark officially picked up The Way Home Season 2 in March 2023, revealing that the show had been a winner in the TV ratings in its Sunday night timeslot.

Even more impressive is that it beat out the likes of The Real Housewives of Potomac, 90 Day Fiance: The Other Way, and Home Town in key demographics.

The Way Home Season 1 was also the No. 1 most-watched program on Sundays among households, P2+, W18+, and P18+ on a L+Sd basis.

In truth, in my humble opinion Never Let Go is actually way better than those Taken movies.
