John Prine Finally Gets the Send-Off He Deserved at Nashville’s Week of Tribute Concerts
Image
To live in Nashville is to love John Prine, so it never sat right how quarantine robbed the late singer, songwriter, and hometown hero of a proper in-person memorial when he died of Covid complications in April of 2020. Prine finally got the wake he deserved this week in Nashville with a string of celebratory concerts titled “You Got Gold,” which featured an all-star, cross-generational casts of admirers covering songs and exchanging anecdotes about the man.

Our Favorite Songs From ‘Nashville,’ Now 10 Years Old
Callie Khouri at an event for 64th Annual Academy Awards (1992)
Oscar-winning screenwriter Callie Khouri had an ace in the hole when she created the ABC-turned-cmt musical drama Nashville a decade ago: She’s married to T Bone Burnett, a songwriter and record producer with 13 Grammys to his name. And Burnett’s supervision of Nashville’s first-season music helped sell the illusion that Connie Britton’s Rayna James and Hayden Panettiere’s Juliette Barnes were actually country superstars. Unfortunately, Burnett left the show after Season 1 amid conflict with ABC executives, but his work on the show helped Nashville soundtrack albums soar on Billboard’s U.S. Country charts. With Nashville hitting its 10th anniversary on October 10, we’re sharing our favorite tracks from the show — including ones performed by costars Charles Esten, Clare Bowen, Sam Palladio, Chaley Rose, and real-life sisters Lennon and Maisy Stella. “If I Didn’t Know Better” by Clare Bowen and Sam Palladio Co-written by John Paul White of The Civil Wars,...

Titled “The First Waltz,” the weekend gathering at Orion presented an array of artists with...

Lee Ann Womack Covers Woody Guthrie’s ‘Dusty Old Dust’
Image
In 1935, Woody Guthrie documented the harsh conditions many endured during the Great Depression in “So Long, It’s Been Good to Know Yuh,” inspired by witnessing the Black Sunday dust storm in Texas from that April. On Wednesday, Lee Ann Womack released a new version of the song (under its original title, “Dusty Old Dust”) from the upcoming Guthrie tribute project Home in This World: Woody Guthrie’s Dustbowl Ballads.

Starting with gentle piano, Womack’s arrangement expands to include a pair of acoustic guitars, on top of which she...

A new album, Better Hurry Up, was on the horizon and his live shows were booked.

“If my tour goes away, it’s like a farmer losing their crops,” he said. “Anyone who is not a huge superstar, the time right before you go on an album release tour — that’s famine right there.

Caleb Caudle Takes a Gritty Road Trip in the Blistering Song ‘Monte Carlo’
Leighton Meester, Selena Gomez, and Katie Cassidy in Bienvenue à Monte Carlo (2011)
For his eighth studio album, Nashville songwriter Caleb Caudle sought a little more grit for his rootsy Americana sound. On his new song “Monte Carlo,” he finds it, delivering a nostalgic road trip across his childhood and into the future.

“Monte Carlo” features Elizabeth Cook on harmony vocals and is the latest track released off Caudle’s upcoming album Better Hurry Up, produced by the Jayhawks’ John Jackson. The chorus has a travelogue quality, as Caudle documents his journey in the titular Chevy. “I drive through the Smokey Mountains/in...

Guerres privées (1991)
After flirting with country music during his days with the Civil Wars, John Paul White completely embraces the genre — particularly the lushly orchestrated countrypolitan sounds of the 1960s — with his newest solo album, The Hurting Kind. It’s a record that looks to crooners like Roy Orbison and pickers like Chet Atkins for inspiration, shot through with the voice that helped the Civil Wars take home four Grammys before calling the duo called it quits in 2012.

As today’s guest on Chris Shiflett’s podcast, Walking the Floor, White fields...

10 Best Country, Americana Songs to Hear Now: Bishop Gunn, Felice Brothers
A power ballad by Southern rockers Bishop Gunn, a politically-charged rough-houser from the Felice Brothers and an intense performance by Emily Scott Robinson are among the must-hear country and Americana songs this week.

Julian Lage, “Crying”

It’s a bold move, covering a Roy Orbison song without singing an actual note. Instead, Julian Lage recreates Orbison’s otherworldly performance on the electric guitar, while an upright bassist and drummer keep time alongside him. His phrasing is elastic and unexpected, from jazzy runs to noisy bursts of garage rock.

The Chief dishes out some fatherly advice to his sons, Joy Williams puts a new spin on a Depeche Mode classic and Kacey Musgraves teams up with Ronnie Milsap in this list of songs to stream this week.

Eric Church, “Some of It”

The follow-up single to “Desperate Man” finds Church in a fatherly mood, singing to his two sons about love, faith and the shelf life of good beer. More mainstream than most of his recent boundary-pushing hits, “Some of It” sounds destined for a lifetime of wedding slow dances and graduation-day playbacks.

John Prine
John Prine brought his characteristic charm and humor to The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Monday, performing the song “When I Get to Heaven.” The tune closes his 2018 album The Tree of Forgiveness.

With its alternating spoken and sung full-band passages, “When I Get to Heaven” is staged with a little theatrical flair for Prine’s Tonight Show performance. Under a single spotlight on a darkened stage, Prine ruminates on what he’ll do if and when he reaches paradise in the afterlife, with only some atmospheric instrumental backing.

Goodbye to The Civil Wars: A Look Back at Their Top 5 Songs
The Civil Wars in Austin City Limits (1975)
The beloved folk duo has officially called it quits.

Sad news in the music world this week as we officially say goodbye to The Civil Wars.

The beloved folk duo has truly called it quits after going on hiatus in November 2012 over what they called "internal discord and irreconcilable differences of ambition." Nevertheless, their sophomore self-titled album debuted atop the Billboard 200 just months later in 2013.

In a press release issued Tuesday, the Nashville pair bid farewell to their fans and offered up a final song (more on that later).

"I am saddened and disappointed by the ending of this duo, to say the very least," said vocalist Joy Williams. "Jp is a tremendous musician, and I will always be grateful for the music we were able to create together."

Williams also noted that she will continue to create new music. "I'm excited to share the music that I am writing and recording in the midst of this...

Music Duo The Civil Wars Announce Breakup
The Civil Wars, the music duo comprised of Joy Williams and John Paul White, are officially breaking up.

The Civil Wars Breakup

Williams and White announced that The Civil Wars were splitting up for good in a press release on Tuesday, reported Billboard. Though the duo has been on hiatus since 2012, it had yet to be established that the two would not reunite on an album again in the future. As a note of gratitude to their fans, The Civil Wars recorded a cover of “You Are My Sunshine.”

Williams, the more media-friendly of the two, had revealed that she’s working on new music and plans to get back on tour in the future.

“I am saddened and disappointed by the ending of this duo, to say the very least. Jp is a tremendous musician, and I will always be grateful for the music we were able to create together,...

The Civil Wars Announce “Permanent Split”
It’s been a long time coming, and despite the hopeful prayers of their fans, The Civil Wars is a band no longer.

Joy Williams and John Paul White announced the news today (August 5), though they’ve been on indefinite hiatus since 2012 due to “internal discord and irreconcilable difference of ambition.”

Ms. Williams, who has been pretty vocal about everything up to this point, explained, "I am saddened and disappointed by the ending of this duo, to say the very least. Jp is a tremendous musician, and I will always be grateful for the music we were able to create together."

"Looking ahead, I'm excited to share the music that I am writing and recording in the midst of this difficult transition. I've loved being back in the studio, and have missed performing live. I look forward to seeing you soon."

And as has been his custom, White completely neglected to mention his music-making mate.

The Civil Wars move from 'hiatus' to officially done and dusted
The Civil Wars in Austin City Limits (1975)
Even though they separated more than a year ago, Joy Williams and John Paul White officially announced The Civil Wars’ divorce today. And they gave us all a little parting gift to remember them by to blunt the pain of realizing they are never, ever getting back together. By the time the duo released its more recent album, “The Civil Wars,” in June 2013, they were already on “hiatus,” so this news comes as a surprise to no one. The Nashville-based duo burned brightly in its short time in the spotlight, winning Grammys for best country duo/group performance and best folk album in 2012 for 2011’s “Barton Hollow.” They also performed with Taylor Swift on "Safe & Sound," a T Bone Burnett-produced track on "The Hunger Games" soundtrack. In a statement posted on their website, Williams commented, “I am saddened and disappointed by the ending of this duo, to say the very least.

Country Duo The Civil Wars Breaks Up
After being on hiatus for a full year, country duo The Civil Wars, whose debut album Barton Hollow won two Grammys for Best Country Duo/Group Performance and Best Folk Album in 2012, has officially broken up.

That same year, a rift occurred between band members Joy Williams and John Paul White, one that was reportedly so bad that they stopped speaking to one another. A second album, titled The Civil Wars, was released in 2013, and fans noted a darker and more brooding edge to the songs – likely a result of it being recording as the conflict between Williams and White occurred. At the time, the only reason The Civil Wars gave for cancelling its tour and going on hiatus was “internal discord and irreconcilable differences of ambition.” Now, it appears that the band is done for good.

Neither have clarified exactly why the rift occurred, though Williams told Entertainment Weekly...

Remembering Michael Jackson on 5th Anniversary of His Death: 5 Great Cover Versions of His Hits!
Many of us remember where we were on June 25th, 2009, the day that Michael Jackson tragically died of cardiac arrest as a result of acute propofol and benzodiazepine intoxication.

And while we’re still sad to have lost him, the late King of Pop’s legacy will continue to live on forever through his music.

On the fifth anniversary of Jackson’s death, we celebrate his life with five amazing cover versions of his hits, proving that his influence is still strongly felt anywhere music is played.

1. “Bad” by Glee’s New Directions & Warblers- The title track from Jackson’s 1987 album served to distance him from his squeaky-clean image. And on the hit show “Glee,” the rivalry between the New Directions and the Warblers comes to a head with a parking garage cover reminiscent of the original music video. Darren Criss, Kevin McHale, Naya Rivera and Grant Gustin all take stellar solos as well.

Travel with The Civil Wars to Paris in new video, 'Dust To Dust'
The Civil Wars in Austin City Limits (1975)
Not so very long ago, The Civil Wars’ Joy Williams and John Paul White actually liked each other and enjoyed each other’s company. The now -defunct duo look back to that time in the video for “Dust To Dust,” the haunting second single from the pair’s sophomore self-titled set. The video features what they claim to be found footage from a 2011 trip to Paris. Yeah, “found” footage, just like “Blair Witch Project” or “Paranormal Activity.” Watch them stroll in Paris. Enjoy the cafes and book stores vicariously. Seriously, it’s a clever way to deal with how to create a video...

Nashville Music Ep Buddy Miller Talks Season 2 Tunes, Rayna Songs Vs. Juliette Jams and More
If youuuu didn’t know better, you probably wouldn’t realize there’s a new maestro behind the music of Nashville‘s second season (bowing Sept. 25 at 10/9c).

And that’s just how the ABC drama’s recently promoted executive music producer Buddy Miller wants it.

Miller, a Grammy-winning record producer and songwriter, has been involved with the country-music series from its inception — he even presided over Claire Bowen and Sam Palladio’s first crack at Scarlett and Gunnar’s inaugural duet. So when music-biz legend T Bone Burnett decided to step down after the Season 1 finale, Miller had an...

The Civil Wars' Self-Titled Album Tops Billboard 200 Chart
After weeks of reigning the top spot, Robin Thicke's “Blurred Lines” has been bumped from the number one spot on Billboard’s album chart this week.

So just who took over the coveted title? That would be, The Civil Wars and their new self-titled album which has sold an impressive 116,000 copies.

This is the first-ever number one album from Joy Williams and John Paul White, as their previous chart high was in 2012 when their album Barton Hollow which sold 36,000 copies after they performed on the Grammy awards.

As for now, Thicke fell to number three spot, while the new Now 47 compilation album debuted at number two.

The Civil Wars have been on hiatus since last November, citing "internal discord and irreconcilable differences of ambition." The act isn’t performing shows to promote the new album at this time, but Williams has been giving interviews to the press. White, however,...

The Civil Wars' latest album debuts at top of Billboard 200
The Civil Wars in Austin City Limits (1975)
The Civil Wars have finally hit No. 1 -- too bad they won't be celebrating together.   The presently defunct duo's new self-titled album tops the Billboard 200 chart this week, after selling 116,000 copies. Despite their peak in popularity, Civil Wars members Joy Williams and John Paul White are currently on hiatus, due to "internal discord and irreconcilable differences of ambition."   This week's sales obliterate the act's previous sales week record, when their full-length debut, "Barton Hollow," moved 36,000 copies after the 2012 Grammy Awards. Meanwhile, "Now 47," the latest is a seemingly endless series of pop compilations, debuts at No. 2...

The Civil Wars – The Civil Wars Review
Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

The concentrated romantic themes of the Civil War’s debut album ‘Barton Hollow’ and the performances that

followed on their tours led many listeners to believe duo John Paul White and Joy Williams were a couple. Late last year this was proved to be very far from the truth when the group cancelled a UK tour and announced an indefinite hiatus due to ‘internal discord and irreconcilable differences of ambition.’ It seemed the success of their debut had driven a wedge between the duo.

It was some surprise when it was announced that a self-titled album of new material was to be released on a major label. Fortunately for us, much of the work on this record had been completed before the rift became an impasse. For anyone with any doubt, lead single ‘The One That Got Away’ did not signal reconciliation and is certainly not...

The Civil Wars Sophomore Album May Take the No. 1 Spot on Billboard's Top 200
Even though folk-duo Joy Williams and John Paul White are no longer touring or promoting together their newly released second album is looking to sell around 100,000 copies by the end of the week. Billboard reports that this would put the self titled album in the number 1 spot of their weekly Top 200 list, just ahead of the "Now 47" music compilation. Last November the duo issued a statement regarding the abrupt end to their touring schedule citing "internal discord and irreconcilable differences of ambition." Williams has conducted select interviews about the new album independently, while White continues to keep a media shy low profile. 'The Civil Wars' is currently available for purchase on iTunes, Amazon, local retailers and at The Civil Wars official Music Store Tracklist: 1 The...

Album review: The Civil Wars' self-titled album burns, burns, burns
The Civil Wars in Austin City Limits (1975)
It’s really a shame that the Civil Wars are unlikely to tour off of their second, self-titled album, because the duo spends at least half of the 12-track set right in the pocket. Blistering vocal moments outweigh any whimpering; Joy Williams and John Paul White relish in “The Civil Wars’” emotional heights, making it all the more enthralling and heartbreaking for the listener who mourns the Grammy Award winners' grave status as a band. Thematically, the songs on “The Civil Wars” are about being unable to have the thing you want -- or to have what it is that you want...

The Civil Wars' Self-Titled Album: What the Critics Are Saying
The Civil Wars in Austin City Limits (1975)
The Civil Wars, the folk-rock duo comprised of Joy Williams and John Paul White, release their sophomore album Tuesday, Aug. 6. While their debut album, Barton Hollow, drew critical acclaim and earned the group two Grammy Awards, their self-titled effort, already being touted as their break-up album, could be their last. After meeting at a songwriting convention in Nashville, Tenn., in 2008, California songwriter Williams and Alabama-born musician White first released a live album and a four-song Ep before unveiling their full-length debut in 2011. Barton Hollow garnered extremely positive reviews and appearances on

Band Releases New Music Despite Break
The Civil Wars in Austin City Limits (1975)
Nashville, Tenn. — There are still helium balloons clinging to the ceiling and new toys scattered across a table in the living room when Joy Williams answers the door. The Civil Wars singer recently found cream cheese icing in her hair, she notes with laughter, more remnants of her son Miles' first birthday party the night before.

It is one of the happiest times for Williams, but as is often the case with life, it's also one of the most difficult. Over the next hour, Williams will laugh and cry and express a range of emotions from pride to fear and hope as she talks about the status of her Grammy Award-winning duo with John Paul White and their new self-titled second album. The group is officially on hiatus even as a single hits the airwaves and the album nears its Aug. 6 release date.

She is fiercely proud of the new...

Back On
The Civil Wars in Austin City Limits (1975)
Nashville, Tenn. — The Civil Wars are returning with a new album.

The duo announced the news on their website Wednesday afternoon. They posted an image of the new self-titled album's cover along with a pair of handwritten notes from Joy Williams and John Paul White thanking fans for their patience.

The album will be released late summer by Columbia Records and is the follow-up to The Civil Wars' debut, "Barton Hollow." That album earned the duo two of their three Grammy Awards and a rapidly growing fan base. But their future together appeared in doubt when they canceled a European tour mid-trip, citing irreconcilable differences.

The album cover is a column of smoke from a fire.

White writes in his note to fans: "Patience is a virtue. Yours has been appreciated."
