To fans, the original Harry Potter movies are some of the most magical films ever made. But, to one of the original stars, it was just another paying gig. The film franchise, which began in 2001 with Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, featured an all-star British cast, which included Alan Rickman, Maggie Smith, Robbie Coltrane, Ralph Fiennes, Michael Gambon, Richard Harris, Helena Bonham Carter, Gary Oldman, and the list goes on and on and on. Among that A-list talent was another member of British acting royalty: Emma Thompson. While many of the cast have magical memories from their time filming the series, Thompson's are a little more down to Earth.
Emma Thompson was recently at the Locarno Film Festival (per Deadline), where she was the guest of honor. During her Q&a, she addressed everything from being asked out on a date by Donald Trump to filming the Harry Potter franchise.

Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav is still waving his wand with confidence. During the company’s most recent earnings call, Zaslav doubled down on his promise that the Harry Potter TV series will run for ten years on HBO Max—far beyond the expected seven-season plan based on J.K. Rowling’s books. The comments arrive as production on Season 1 ramps up in and around London, with the series set to premiere in 2027. The new Harry Potter adaptation is now fully in motion, with the first official images of the cast and sets drawing surprisingly warm reactions from longtime fans. We've already seen Dominic McLaughlin as The Boy Who Lived, Nick Frost as a towering Hagrid, and delightful sneak peeks at Daniel Rigby and Bel Powley as Uncle Vernon and Aunt Petunia.

HBO'sHarry Potterreboot is currently filming, and fans will be excited to learn that the latest adaptation will feature at least one key difference from the film franchise. The upcoming series will seemingly have a vibrant color palette, a key visual component that was missing in the iconic movies.
During an interview with Forbes, cinematographer Adriano Goldman teased his work on HBO's television adaptation of Harry Potter. The director of photography revealed that, after spending 18 weeks in pre-production, the creative team settled on the visual style for the first season of the fantasy reboot. The grueling process will end up defining the series for the next decade, which Goldman teased will feature his affinity for colors. “I have a special relationship with color. This series needs to be more vibrant from the global point of view of the image,” Goldman revealed.

In the last week or two, we've seen plenty of glimpses of the new Harry Potter series on HBO, with filming now underway in and around London. We've had the first official looks at Dominic McLaughlin as The Boy Who Lived, and Nick Frost as his half-giant guardian angel, Rubeus Hagrid, as well as seeing the pair heading into a London underground station. There were also (unofficial) sneak peeks at Daniel Rigby as Uncle Vernon Dursley, Bel Powley as Aunt Petunia Dursley, and an epic preview of Amos Kitson as a fantastically 90s Dudley Dursley at London Zoo. And now, Kitson has become one of the first — unlikely, it must be said — cast member to speak publicly since the beginning of production. Kitson posted an adorable throwback Instagram post of himself as a tiny Harry Potter, complete with lightning bolt scar, and a delightfully sweet message:

Work continues on HBO's Harry Potter TV series in London, England, and Dominic McLaughlin has just been spotted as the Boy Wizard alongside a giant-sized Hagrid.
However, despite what you might think at first glance, that isn't Shaun of the Dead star Nick Frost. Similar to the Harry Potter movies, it seems this series is utilising a suitably large stand-in who will don a realistic prosthetic head with the Hagrid actor's likeness.
As with the late Robbie Coltrane's portrayal, Frost's performance will then be merged with that. The result will be a Hagrid played by a well-known star who, at the same time, does right by the version of the half-giant and gamekeeper and groundskeeper at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry by being suitably massive.
It looks like McLaughlin and "Frost" are shooting scenes in the Muggle world, where they take the tube before arriving at Diagon Alley.

The first photos set photos from HBO's Harry Potter reboot found their way online yesterday, but there's one crucial detail that has fans feeling a lot better about the upcoming small screen adaptation.
The Harry Potter books are set between 1991 and 1998, though the movies led by Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint appear to have taken place at the same time they were filmed: the first decade of the 2000s. Much has been said about HBO's plans for the property, with the biggest concern being that the Wizarding World would either be Americanised or brought into the present day.
After all, how better to make a new take on Harry Potter resonate with today's kids than by making the Dursleys one of those annoying TikTok families or for Harry's fellow students to be obsessed with Instagram and influencers? It sounds awful, we know.
Fortunately, these set photos have confirmed...

The Harry Potter franchise is getting rebooted as a TV series at HBO, and earlier this week it was officially announced that production has commenced on the series, with filming taking place at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden, UK. The press release noted that the series “will debut in 2027 on HBO and HBO Max where it’s available, including in upcoming launch markets Germany, Italy, and the UK.” Now, some set pics have leaked online to give us our first look at the Dursleys – and to reveal that the characters are wearing ’90s-style clothing, indicating that this series, like the novels, will be set in the 1990s.
The cast includes John Lithgow as Dumbledore, Nick Frost as Hagrid, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, Luke Thallon as Quirinus Quirrell, Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch, Lox Pratt as Draco Malfoy, Johnny Flynn as his father Lucius Malfoy, Bel Powley...

Production is currently underway on HBO's Harry Potterreboot, and the updates are coming in thick and fast, much like the letters that famously poured out of the chimney at Number Four, Privet Drive — the address at which Harry begrudgingly resided following the death of his parents. He was forced to live in the cupboard under the stairs, while his despicable Uncle Vernon, Aunt Petunia, and cousin Dudley stomped around him. Unfortunately for Harry, he will have to face them again in the upcoming TV adaptation of J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter books.
New photos from the set of the highly anticipated Harry Potter series have offered a glimpse at how the dastardly Dursleys will appear in the small-screen version of the story, following an extremely divisive first look at another fan-favorite character. Production is now underway on HBO's small-screen adaptation of J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter. We recently got a first official look at Dominic McLaughlin as the titular Boy Wizard, and these latest set photos taken at London Zoo (via SFFGazette.com) give us another glimpse of the young actor alongside members of the thoroughly unpleasant Dursley family.
In the novels, Harry is begrudgingly taken in by Petunia and Vernon Dursley following the death of his parents. The lad is not treated very well (to say the least), but does ultimately put his differences with their son, Dudley, aside.
In related news, Variety reports that Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden is building a temporary school so that the show’s young cast can keep up with their studies during filming.
"Three Rivers District Council is permitting the studio to “use a series of portable buildings as a school facility for the next decade.

Production on HBO's Harry Potter TV series started earlier this week, and following our first look at both the Boy Wizard and Hagrid, we have a better idea of what to expect from this small screen adaptation of controversial author J.K. Rowling's iconic series of novels.
We've known for a while that HBO intends to adapt a book per season, but with the show's young leads set to grow up fast and so much more ground to cover than the movies, the cable network has a unique plan to counter them being aged out.

Harry Potter stars Emma Watson and Zoe Wanamaker have each been banned from driving for six months following separate speeding incidents, reports the BBC.
Watson was caught driving 38 mph in a 30 mph zone in Oxford during July 2024. For the traffic offense, the Hermione Granger actress was fined £1,044 by High Wycombe Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, July 16th.
Before the incident, Watson had already racked up nine points on her license. In the UK, a driver can be banned for six months after tallying 12 or more penalty points within three years. They must also apply for a new license before returning to the road.

Harry Potter may have just started production on its first season, but HBO is reportedly already looking ahead. A new report has offered insight into the network's plans for the show's second season, which would adapt The Chamber of Secrets.

Following our first look at Dominic McLaughlin as the Boy Wizard, HBO's upcoming Harry Potter TV series has just shared a first look—via SFFGazette.com—at Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid.
The late Robbie Coltrane played the character in the big screen franchise that ran from 2001 to 2011, and this interpretation doesn't seem all that different. Frost is roughly the same age as his predecessor was in that first movie—a little older, in fact—but looks a bit more youthful in the role.
So far, this adaptation of Harry Potter doesn't look all that different from the movies, aside from a change in actors. That might be off-putting for longtime fans, but is unlikely to bother the new, younger audience Warner Bros. Discovery hopes to introduce to this Wizarding World.

HBO’s “Harry Potter” television adaptation is slowly coming together, but we’re still a ways out from actually getting it on our screens. That said, we are learning more and more as the months go on.
The series was first announced back in 2023, when HBO first launched the new name for its streaming service, Max (which has since been rebranded back to HBO Max). It has yet to be officially confirmed that each season will span one novel, similar to Disney+’s “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” series, but each book does take place over a single school year, as did the movies.
Here’s everything we know about the series thus far.

The HBO series officially began production on July 14, 2025, with HBO confirming that the series is planning to premiere sometime in 2027.

As we first reported on SFFGazette.com, HBO has announced today that production has begun on the upcoming Harry Potter TV series at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in the UK.
It's also been revealed that the series will premiere in 2027 on HBO and HBO Max, adding some weight to recent rumours that the plan is to shoot The Philosopher's Stone/The Sorcerer's Stone and The Chamber of Secrets back-to-back.
With this news comes our first look at Dominic McLaughlin as the Boy Wizard himself, Harry Potter. The newcomer is wearing the character's trademark glasses and has that all-too familiar lightning bolt-shaped scar on his forehead. It's fair to say he looks like he's stepped straight off the page.
The new Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry robes are also featured, though we can't see the school's updated logo. Understandably, fans remain eager to learn how this small screen take will...

HBO's Harry Potter series has just received the most magical of updates after the announcement that production has commenced, as well as the first adorable look at Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter himself. McLaughlin will be joined in the show by Arabella Stanton as Hermione Grainger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley, with the show set to premiere in 2027. It was earlier reported that the first two seasons would be shot back to back.
Just like the original film franchise, HBO’s version will follow its three young stars as they grow up across the seven seasons of the series — each one adapting a single book from the Harry Potter saga. All three leads are relative newcomers, mirroring the casting approach of the original movies. McLaughlin will also appear alongside Nick Frost in the upcoming comedy Grow, while Stanton previously played the title role in Matilda the Musical in London’s West End.

After months of speculation and industry chatter, J.K. Rowling has broken her silence — and it’s all good news for Potterheads.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), the creator of the Harry Potter universe gave a glowing endorsement of HBO’s upcoming television adaptation of her world-famous book series.
The show, which promises to be a “faithful adaptation,” is set to begin filming in mid-2025. Rowling isn’t just rubber-stamping this one from afar — she confirmed she’s been working “closely with the extremely talented writers.”
“I read the first two episodes of the forthcoming HBO ‘Harry Potter’ series and they are So, So, So Good!” she wrote, leaving no room for doubt about her excitement.
While she won’t have a screenwriting credit on the show (unlike her involvement in the Fantastic Beasts films), her creative presence is still being felt behind the scenes. Francesca Gardiner will serve as showrunner,...

HBO's upcoming Harry Potter reboot still needs to fill a few key roles (who will play Voldemort?), and as the TV series gears up to begin shooting, construction on the show's massive practical sets continues.
We've seen Privet Drive and a bare bones version of Platform 9¾, and snaps of what look like Hogwarts' Great Hall have just found their way online (via SFFGazette.com). They don't show much, but all signs point to it being a suitably impressive take on a key location in the books...and movies.
Topping what we saw in the latter will be no easy feat, though that goes for every location that's being recreated in Harry Potter. The biggest test will be how this show's take on those differs from what we've already seen on screen over the years.

The Harry Potter franchise is about to be rebooted as a TV series, with plans for release in late 2026. The upcoming HBO show has already cast several important characters who are expected to be around for a long time.
Warner Bros. revealed that they have a 10-year plan for Harry Potter, with each season adapting a book from J.K. Rowling's novel series of the same name. The studio surprised fans by casting some characters ahead of their first appearance in the show, including Lucius Malfoy, who first appears in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, and Prime Minister Cornelius Fudge, who also appears in the same book, although he is mentioned in Harry Potter and thePhilosopher's Stone. In an interview with The Times, Bertie Carvel, who will play Fudge, revealed that his time on the show will depend on fan reactions, and that he might leave after one season.

HBO is rebooting the Harry Potter franchise for television, and to say it's been a controversial ride so far would be understating it. From J.K. Rowling's close association with the show to the entirely new main cast, it seems fans of the franchise have been struggling to come to terms with the upcoming TV adaptation. However, some are far less legitimate reasons than others, especially when it comes to the casting of an iconic character. Despite Harry Potter ultimately being a story about the dangers of prejudice, some "fans" have been unjustifiably angry at the reboot casting a Black actor as Professor Severus Snape.
While speaking with Collider during FanExpo in Denver, Harry Potter star Jason Isaacs discussed the online "racist" backlash when Paapa Essiedu was cast as Professor Snape in the reboot. Isaacs, who played Lucius Malfoy in the film franchisie, is not returning for the HBO series.

Rewatching Harry Potter is just as magical an experience as if you were watching it for the first time. Such is the magic of the franchise, based on the books by J.K. Rowling. But one thing really struck me, a wild, wild theory about our iconic antagonist, Ralph Fiennes’ Lord Voldemort.
While watching Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire on Prime Video, one cannot help but think, what if Tom Riddle, ever the control-obsessed dark wizard, is bald because he deliberately wants to make it impossible for anyone to use his hair for Polyjuice Potion?

Production on HBO’s highly anticipated Harry Potter series is expected to begin later this summer, and author J.K. Rowling has shared her excitement about the project’s progress.
Posting on X (formerly Twitter), Rowling revealed that she’s already read the scripts for the first two episodes and described them as “so, so, so good,” expressing strong approval for the direction the series is taking.
When fans inquired whether she would be writing any episodes herself, Rowling confirmed she wouldn’t be scripting them directly, but emphasized that she’s been working closely with the show’s writing team to ensure the adaptation stays true to the spirit of the books.

The controversial author recently took to X (formerly Twitter) to praise the show, which is set to be a “faithful adaptation” of Rowling’s mega-selling fantasy series. She also noted that she “worked closely with the extremely talented writers” on the series.
“I read the first two episodes of the forthcoming HBO Harry Potter series and they are So, So, So Good!” she added.

The upcoming Harry Potter TV show is getting closer. After the announcement of a series of cast members for the upcoming HBO Max show, the series has just received feedback from author J.K. Rowling.

Despite already leaving his mark on the Harry Potter universe as Sirius Black, Gary Oldman isn’t ready to close the chapter on the Wizarding World just yet.
In a recent interview with Variety, the Oscar-winning actor shared that he had his interest in returning as Albus Dumbledore in HBO’s upcoming series adaptation. "I would've fancied a go at Dumbledore," Oldman admitted. "Getting up there now, it's the right age for Dumbledore."
However, Oldman believes his association with the original films may have ruled him out. "My personal feeling is that they're not going to go anywhere near anyone that was connected to the original," he said. Still, he expressed curiosity about the reboot, especially since much of the source material was left out of the earlier movies.
The coveted role ultimately went to John Lithgow, a decision that’s sparked some backlash online, primarily due to Lithgow’s...

HBO's upcoming "Harry Potter" series continues to attract attention. This time, Gary Oldman has shared his views on the show -- as well as a very particular character he would have liked to play on it. Oldman, of course, played Harry's (Daniel Radcliffe) godfather and notable wizard Sirius Black in the film adaptations, but in a new interview with Variety, he admitted an interest in playing an even more notable character, should the opportunity arise:
"I would have fancied a shot at Dumbledore. But I'm getting up there, I'm getting up there now. Just the right age for Dumbledore."
In the same interview, Oldman did note that he thinks the makers of the show will likely steer clear of actors from the movies, so it doesn't exactly seem like he's holding his breath until someone offers him the role ... which is a good thing, considering that the show has already cast John Lithgow as Dumbledore.
