- Was the first black member of Actors Equity Association. He was also the founder of the Negro Actors Guild. Appeared in 21 plays.
- Graduated from Howard University School of Law, class of 1895.
- Was an accomplished pianist.
- He and his second wife Lillian adopted two sons, James Myles Whipper (nee James Clark) and Leigh Richard Whipper (nee Richard Herron). His son James was killed while a soldier during the Korean War.
