The Shrinking Actor Who Played Two Wildly Different Roles On Seinfeld
Image
"Shrinking" star Christa Miller, who plays rock-collecting empty nester Liz on the brilliant Apple TV+ series, can portray an incredibly diverse range of women. Even just as Liz, the next-door neighbor to Jason Segel's grieving therapist character Jimmy, she shows her ability to be truly complex, balancing maternal warmth and venomous vitriol all within herself in a single scene. But long before she played the astonishingly great Liz or even snark queen Jordan on "Scrubs," Miller played two wildly different roles on the hit NBC sitcom "Seinfeld." What's even funnier is that both characters interacted almost entirely with Jason Alexander's character George Constanza, first as his potential employer, whom he ends up offending in a major way, and then later as his girlfriend, though it doesn't last long.

Miller is amazing when she's playing someone sweet and even more incredible when she's emotionally eviscerating someone with just a...

Kit Williamson Details Casting the ‘Uncancelable’ Kathy Griffin in His New Series ‘Unconventional’
Image
When Kit Williamson’s “EastSiders” premiered on YouTube in December 2012, Netflix had not yet debuted its first original series. A dozen years later, streaming has overtaken traditional television in the market — and Williamson is back with another LGBTQ+ slice of life show, this time in the form of “Unconventional” on Revry.

“I don’t know that anybody really predicted it becoming what it’s become,” the actor/creator/writer/director told TheWrap of the streaming boom. “I hope that there is an increasing demand for independently created television when we live in such a, let’s be honest, metric-driven world where algorithms are deciding whether or not stories get told or continued.”

“Will we have the same four-quadrant appeal as ‘7th Heaven’? No, we won’t. But that’s Ok,” Williamson explained. “We need specific stories that cater to our communities authentically and don’t pull their punches or try...

LGBTQ+ Streamer Revry Debuts ‘Unconventional’ Trailer From Kit Williamson
Image
Unconventional is a series that follows two eccentric, queer siblings and their significant others as they try to start an unconventional family while navigating their 30s.

The show is set to launch on LGBTQ+ streamer Revry on February 11 and you can watch the first trailer for it above.

The trailer introduces Noah and Margot, two queer siblings played by Williamson and Aubrey Shea. Things take a turn when their estranged conservative father re-enters their lives—forcing them into an unexpected collision of ideals, activism, and family dysfunction.

The series comes from EastSiders’ Kit Williamson, who stars alongside James Bland, Aubrey Shea, Briana Venskus, Willam Belli, Dana Wheeler-Nicholson, Laith Ashley, James Urbaniak and Kathy Griffin.

Created by Williamson, who also writes and directs, it is exec produced by Miranda Bailey, Jason Beck, Christopher Miller, H. Shen, Erwin More, Ed Ruttenberg and Larissa James. Bland also produces.

Last year, Williamson brought the...

Kit Williamson Says His New Queer TV Comedy ‘Unconventional‘ Isn’t About Politics, but ‘Unfortunately Our Lives Have Been Politicized’: ‘I’m Not Going to Quiet Down’
Image
Kit Williamson, best known for creating and starring in the Emmy-nominated series “EastSiders,” is back with “Unconventional.”

Premiering on LGBTQ streaming platform Revry on Feb. 11, the TV comedy series stars Williamson as Noah, a queer millennial questioning the future of his 10-year marriage to his husband Dan (James Bland). At the same time, Noah becomes the sperm donor to his sister Margot’s wife, Eliza. Each episode follows a month of the pregnancy.

As Williamson first told me when I broke the news about the show’s Revry deal, “Unconventional” is “unapologetically queer.”

“I think we’re in a really interesting inflection point where I think we’re being told to quiet down, and I actually think that the opposite approach is what is needed,” Williamson says, alluding to the Trump administration’s anti-lgbtq policies and directives. “I’m not going to quiet down. I’m going to double down,...

10 Darkest Moments in Tombstone, Ranked
Image
The 90s Western Tombstone sees storied lawman Wyatt Earp (Kurt Russell) attempt to live a civilian life after moving to Tombstone, Arizona, with his extended family. Despite the presence of a criminal gang known as the "Cowboys," Wyatt initially prospers in the frontier town as a card dealer at a saloon. Unfortunately, his brother Virgil (Sam Elliott) becomes the local sheriff and Wyatt is drawn into a bloody war with the Cowboys.

Tombstone skillfully blends action, humor, and romance in its exploration of Wyatt Earp's time in Arizona. While there are plenty of light and heartwarming moments, the film doesn't shy away from the bloody and depressing parts of the story. In fact, its unwavering examination of these dark moments are some of its rawest and most emotional scenes.

Queer Comedy Series ‘Unconventional’ From ‘Eastsiders’ Creator and Star Kit Williamson Sets Premiere on LGBTQ Streaming Network Revry (Exclusive)
Image
Kit Williamson’s new scripted half-hour comedy series “Unconventional” has been acquired by LGBTQ streaming network Revry.

Williamson, a six-time Emmy nominee best known as the creator and star of “Eastsiders,” stars in “Unconventional” as Noah Guillory, a queer millennial struggling with his 10-year marriage, possibly starting a family, and the future of his PhD program while also acting as the sperm donor to his sister Margot’s wife, Eliza.

The nine-episode season – each episode follows a month of Eliza’s pregnancy — will premiere on Revry on Feb. 11.

“‘Unconventional’ comes at a time where stories about marginalized communities are more important than ever and ‘Unconventional’ is an unapologetically queer show,” Williamson said Thursday. “Unfortunately, LGBTQ representation has diminished considerably since ‘Eastsiders’ ended, and mainstream depictions often shy away from the complex realities of queer love. Revry is the perfect home for the series and I couldn’t be more excited about the acquisition.

10 Best Performances In Tombstone, Ranked
Image
The cast of Tombstone was stuffed with celebrated and talented actors, but these 10 performances stole the show. Tombstone is widely considered one of the best Western movies of all time, and a big reason it was so successful is because of its huge cast. The cast of Tombstone is filled with big names like Charlton Heston, Kurt Russell, and Val Kilmer, yet it also finds space for its supporting cast to stand out on their own. While all the actors in Tombstone brought something unique and valuable to the film, only 10 can be considered the best.

While big, impressive scenes are an important part of acting, they aren't the whole story. As such, the criteria for the best performances in Tombstone isn't the same as the list of the best scenes in Tombstone. Instead, the best performances are the ones that not only stood out on their own, but also...

What Happened To Wyatt Earp's Wife, Mattie, After Tombstone
Image
This article contains discussion of addiction and suicide.

Wyatt Earp's (Kurt Russell) wife, Mattie (Dana Wheeler-Nicholson), had an unceremonious exit from Tombstone, but what happened to the real-life woman after leaving Arizona is even more tragic. Tombstone is based on a true story, and while it does take some creative liberties, most of the film is accurate to the true story of the Earp family and Doc Holliday's time in the Arizona Territory. Some of the facts incorporated into the movie include Tombstone's Cowboys gang, which was a real group of outlaws, and different parts of Wyatt's story. While it was largely accurate, Tombstone brushed over one important story: Mattie Earp's.

Wyatt Earp's common-law wife, meaning they were considered married because they lived together but never had an official and legal wedding, was born Celia Blaylock (via Mattie: Wyatt Earp's Secret Second Wife). She was born on a farm,...

Cast set in the pic, described as an underdog sports story, includes Melissa Jackson (The Easy Kind), Abigail Cowen (Fate: The Winx Saga), Dana Wheeler-Nicholson (Nashville) and Adam Huber (Dynasty).

Written by Melnechuk and Jackson, the film tells the story of Daisy (Jackson), a Latina orphan living and working as a cowgirl on a bucking bull ranch in Texas. Daisy’s always been treated as less-than by her domineering boss Mrs. Koehl (Wheeler-Nicholson). When her rodeo star twin brother gets paralyzed, his spitfire bull rider girlfriend Tam (Cowen) convinces Daisy to train and take her brother’s place in a high-stakes championship. Determined to get her shot, Daisy catches the attention of washed-up pro rider Guy (Huber), who becomes her coach. Sparks fly, but there are snakes everywhere. Betrayed by those closest...

Independent TV Pilots Are Having A Moment
Image
Can television have its own New Hollywood moment?

Much like movies such as Bonnie and Clyde, The Graduate, Rosemary’s Baby and Easy Rider took the late 1960s by storm, a group of writers and directors are hoping that their own independent TV projects can break through and find their way to the small screen amidst the current Hollywood contraction.

After a number of web series such as Issa Rae’s The Mis-Adventures of Awkward Black Girl, Broad City and High Maintenance were turned into TV series over the past decade, writers and directors hoped that this would lead to more.

However, the rise of streaming originals saw the business go the other way, with incredibly expensive dramas and comedies, often led by movie stars, taking over. This trend is now waning and a new generation of creators hopes that cost-conscious companies will now pay more attention to their projects instead.

Fletch and Fletch Lives blu-ray specs and features are unveiled by Kino Lorber
Image
Although collecting physical media doesn’t have the convenience appeal of streaming films, there is now sort of a stigma with purchasing movies through online platforms. Although its possible to compile a collection of movies through an online library, consumers will ultimately be at the whim of the service should it choose to keep the title available on their server. Additionally, there are a number of titles that don’t happen to find their way to have streaming access and physical media distributors like Shout and Vinegar Syndrome have dedicated their business to some overlooked titles.

Kino Lorber, another great media distributor has just unveiled the technical specs for the Chevy Chase Fletch films via Blu-ray.com, as well as revealing the special features that can be found on the new blu-rays. In 2022, Jon Hamm would take up the mantle in the long-in-development third movie, Confess, Fletch, which is based...

Producer Miranda Bailey Says Studios & Streamers Turned Down New Series ‘Unconventional’ Due To LGBTQ Themes
Image
Exclusive: Producer Miranda Bailey, known for movies such as Swiss Army Man, Don’t Think Twice and The Diary of a Teenage Girl, says that multiple studios and streamers shied away from acquiring her completed drama series Unconventional due to its queer themes.

Bailey, who declined to name the companies, is instead planning to release the series in 2024 on VOD through distribution label The Film Arcade, which has acquired U.S. rights to the nine-episode season.

Eastsiders creator Kit Williamson is behind the Sundance Lab-developed drama, which follows eccentric, queer siblings Noah and Margot Guillory and their significant others Daniel Charles and Eliza Slate as they try to start an unconventional family while navigating their thirties.

Williamson stars as Noah alongside James Bland (Insecure), Aubrey Peeples (Nashville), Briana Venskus (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), Beau Bridges (Masters of Sex), Kathy Griffin (Search Party), Dana Wheeler-Nicholson (Friday Night Lights), Tuc Watkins (Uncoupled), Willam Belli...

The X-Files Episode That Spoke to Teen Girls Like No Other
Image
If you have not re-watched The X-Files in a while, you might not remember the 13th episode of season 3, “Syzygy,” very well. It appears on neither “Best Episodes” lists nor “Worst Episodes” lists of the show. There are 218 episodes of The X-Files, and in rankings of all or most of them, “Syzygy” appears in positions like 77, 123, and 133. Even the director, Rob Bowman, is not particularly keen on the episode. In the book X-Files Confidential, he talked about how he felt pressured to shoot it quickly because the break for the holidays was coming up, and that he felt the story was “oblique.”

But there is one group of X-Files fans “Syzygy” speaks to more than any other, especially when it first aired: teenage girls. For them, or for those who first watched it as a teenager, this may not only be a favorite episode, it is certainly an important one.

Tombstone Ending Explained: Legend Passes Into Cinema
Image
Although "Heaven's Gate" is now regarded in some circles as a misunderstood masterpiece, Michael Cimino's lavish box office flop had a lot to answer for at the time. Not only was it blamed for the death of the American New Wave, but it was also seen as the final nail in the coffin of the Western. Released in 1980, the subsequent decade was an especially fallow period for the genre, but at least we got "Three Amigos."

The drought lasted almost exactly 10 years until Kevin Costner's "Dances With Wolves" became a massive box office success and went on to win seven Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Director, reinvigorating the oldest and most resilient of U.S. genres once again. Two years after Costner's triumph, Clint Eastwood's harsh but lyrical "Unforgiven" was also a big hit with audiences and won the same big prizes at the Oscars. The Western was back.

Well, loyal readers, it’s that time again. December 31st, and you know what that means… it’s Val Kilmer’s birthday!

We here at Trailers From Hell would like to commemorate the moment with a look back at perhaps Kilmer’s signature role, the hard-partying sharpshooter Doc Holliday in the classic modern Western Tombstone (1993).

The story of Doc, the Earp brothers and their battle with a vicious gang of outlaws known as the “Cowboys” for the soul of Tombstone, Arizona, including the historic gunfight at the O.K. Corral, has been depicted on screen many times, many ways. But never with the verve and vigor of this picture, a riveting actioner boasting a cast of All-Stars. They even got Robert Mitchum to narrate!

After a spooky opening that introduces us to the ruthless Cowboys in all their evil ways as they disrupt a wedding in Mexico, we kick off...

Jimmy Gonzales & Dennis Quaid in Fishing Film 'Blue Miracle' Trailer
Dennis Quaid and Jimmy Gonzales in Blue Miracle (2021)
"Fish on!!" Netflix has debuted an official trailer for the inspirational family film Blue Miracle, based on a true story about a Mexican orphanage that competes in a fishing tournament. After a hurricane leaves their boys home nearly destroyed, they decide to partner with a local fishing boat captain, as played by Dennis Quaid, and enter the tournament (Bisbee's Black & Blue) with no hope - only dreams. The film's main cast includes Jimmy Gonzales, Anthony Gonzalez, Bruce McGill, Nathan Arenas, Raymond Cruz, Miguel Angel Garcia, Isaac Arellanes, Steve Gutierrez, Dana Wheeler-Nicholson, Fernanda Urrejola, andSilverio Palacios. As uplifting as this true story is, this is one of these perfectly campy films filled with cheesiness designed to make "all audiences" feel good. At least Quaid has some good lines in this. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Julio Quintana's Blue Miracle, from Netflix's YouTube: The incredible true story of Casa Hogar,...

A modern-day reboot of “Fletch” is in the works, with Jon Hamm set to star as the quick-witted investigative reporter character originally played by Chevy Chase in 1985’s “Fletch” and its sequel “Fletch Lives.”

Grey's Anatomy Sneak Peek: Richard Becomes a Meme as Grey Sloan Tries to Save His Life!
James Pickens Jr., Ellen Pompeo, and Chandra Wilson in Grey's Anatomy (2005)
The fight is on to diagnose and save Richard on Grey's Anatomy Season 16 Episode 20, airing tonight at 9/8c on ABC.

While Maggie, Meredith, and Amelia work together to run tests on Weber, Maggie is checking out the headlines following Richard's claim that he had a cure for cancer.

The internet is ablaze with memes of Richard, as well as negative headlines that make him sound like a conspiracy theorist, according to a new sneak peek of the episode.

"Famous surgeon implodes at medical conference," says one headline, while another says:

"Medical meltdown of the year."

"It doesn't stop," a defeated Maggie says.

Unfortunately, it also looks like the nightmare will have much more far-reaching consequences.

"Catherine's on the phone with the foundation publicist to try to scrub it all from the internet which isn't really possible," says Meredith chiming in.

Catherine probably feels guilty because she thought Richard was drunk at the event,...

Grey's Anatomy Spoilers: Will Richard Die?
James Pickens Jr., Ellen Pompeo, and Chandra Wilson in Grey's Anatomy (2005)
Are we about to say goodbye to Richard Weber?

Grey's Anatomy Season 16 Episode 20 picks up in the immediate aftermath of the character being rushed to the hospital with a suspected stroke.

Back when Patrick Dempsey's Derek Shepherd was killed off, the actor exiting the show was not announced in advance so fans were gobsmacked when the emotional death played out.

What we do know about "Sing It Again" is that everyone will band together with one common goal: Save Richard.

This includes Catherine who initially thought her estranged husband had turned back to alcohol when he claimed to have a cure for cancer at an event.

Nashville Season 4 Review
One episode was provided prior to broadcast.

Not exactly the crown jewel of ABC’s line-up since the invention of Tgit and the Shondaland whirlwind that began a few seasons into Scandal‘s run, Nashville still feels rightfully different from the network’s other dramas, and that’s a good thing. The show isn’t nearly as fast-paced as How To Get Away With Murder, or as fiendishly intricate as the now-defunct Revenge, but it nearly wins for simply not being those things. The characters click, the dramas sizzle, and the music swells and croons, creating a show that – four seasons in – still feels as sincere and charming as the myriad amounts of southern drawl coming out of its characters’ mouths.

The season 4 premiere picks up a month after last year’s everyone-knows-Deacon-isn’t-dead cliffhanger that actually manages to generate a few minutes’ worth of suspense before providing viewers with...

6 Years | VOD Review
There’s Always Tomorrow…Maybe: Fidell Explores the Familiar Predicaments of the Ltr

Director Hannah Fidell follows her 2013 debut A Teacher with concisely minded 6 Years, another intimate exploration of a central relationship pushed to critical juncture. With her previous film documenting the sexual liaison between a teacher and her student, Fidell turns to less provocative waters this time around, focusing on a more familiar, socially acceptable scenario—the disintegration of a heterosexual long term relationship. Effectively capturing an empathetic and heartfelt portrait of how breaking up is hard to do, there’s an honorable level of realism established here that Fidell maintains throughout the film. The only trouble is, the film never feels like more than a comprehensively detailed, entirely foreseeable, forgone conclusion about a mundane, privileged couple hit with a cold, hard dose of reality.

Dan (Ben Rosenfeld) and Melanie (Taissa Farmiga) have been together for six years, having originally dated in high school.

Netflix Nabs Hannah Fidell Drama 6 Years In First SXSW Deal
Netflix has acquired drama 6 Years, from A Teacher director Hannah Fidell, at the South By Southwest Film Festival in Austin, Texas, sealing this year’s first major deal.

Lindsay Burdge, Joshua Leonard, Dana Wheeler-Nicholson, Jennifer Lafleur and Peter Vack co-star, while Fidell both helmed and penned the script.

The acquisition isn’t completely out of the blue – Netflix signed a four-picture deal with the Duplass brothers (big names on the festival circuit), who produced 6 Years, at Sundance earlier this year, though this pick-up is not included in that agreement.

SXSW 2015 Adds Melissa McCarthy’s Spy, Will Ferrell’s Get Hard, Ryan Gosling’s Lost River And Many More
With Sundance in the rear view mirror and Berlin just around the corner, another huge festival that’s now very much in mind is the 2015 South By Southwest Film Festival (SXSW 2015), to be held in Austin, Texas, this March. And this year, the lineup looks no less eclectic than in any previous year for the festival.

SXSW 2015 will see the debut of two big-studio comedies (Paul Feig’s Spy, starring Melissa McCarthy; and Etan Cohen’s Get Hard, starring Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart), some red-hot documentaries (none more so than Alex Gibney’s Steve Jobs: The Man in the Machine) and a vast array of smaller indie titles. Intriguingly, Judd Apatow’s Amy Schumer vehicle Trainwreck will be screened as a work-in-progress.

Elsewhere, Alex Garland’s well-received Ex Machina will be making an appearance, as will Ryan Gosling’s much-maligned Lost River. And curiously, there will be a...

Winter in the Blood | Review
Blood Simple: The Smith’s Sophomore Effort a Lyrical, Uneven Production

It’s been well over a decade now since their first film, 2002’s The Slaughter Rule, which starred both Ryan Gosling and Amy Adams in early film roles, but Alex and Andrew Smith, twin brothers, are back with their sophomore effort, Winter in the Blood. Idiosyncratic and offbeat, it’s reminiscent of early, understated Coen Bros. films, a beautiful, troubled nightmare like Barton Fink, for instance. Though the narrative meanders and often feels too elliptical for its own good, the film is a character piece delivered as a languid tone poem, life as a bramble weed drifting simultaneously to freedom and trouble.

Waking up in a ditch,...
