    During World War II, Webb served in North Africa as personal aide to General Lloyd R. Fredendall, the commander of the U.S. Second Corps. He was present during the defeat of the American forces at the battle of Kasserine Pass, after which Fredendall was relieved of command and sent back to the U.S..
