When Friday the 13th was released in May 1980, its remarkable financial success poured gasoline on the flickering slasher-genre flames. Already burning solid thanks to The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and Halloween, these films became touch points for many filmmakers looking to break into the industry or simply stack a few coins. Everything from masks and machetes to final girls and fake-outs quickly became solidified as standard genre tropes. However, it was Friday the 13th that reframed summer camps as prime locations for slasher mayhem and popularized it with others looking to replicate the results.

The twisted world of Dark/Web is slowly approaching. If you’ve ever needed a reason to fear the world the internet, this upcoming series is sure to give you one. With its healthy combination of both serialized and anthological storytelling, Dark/Web seems poised to scratch an itch that a lot of consumers are having.

It’s been a long time coming. Last year, we launched a contest that would see the short script of readers like you produced into an anthology short that would be a part of something much bigger. That project is called Dark/Web. It's not just an anthology, though. It's a serialized show with anthological aspects woven throughout.

The synopsis of the digital series is as follows:

Lrm has exclusively learned that as of Wednesday, January 26, the production on the Dark/Web anthology episode “Hacked” has officially begun! Those of you following the progress of the upcoming digital series Dark/Web may recognize the episode title, which was written by one of our readers, Christopher Webster, whose script won over the producers of Dark/Web, and made its way into the actual show.

Dark/Web is a unique hybrid of serialized and anthological storytelling. It contains and overarching narrative, but within each of the episodes is a separate, standalone anthology that somehow plays into the main plot of the story. Last week, you had your first behind-the-scenes glimpse at what to expect in Lrm’s exclusive digital series, Dark/Web. As promised, that was only the beginning of the ongoing coverage you’ll be getting of the horror anthology, and we have some cool stuff to show you today.

But first, in case this is your first time hearing about Dark/Web, the upcoming reveal may make more sense if we explain what Dark/Web is exactly.

Dark/Web is a digital series that will be released on Lrm early next year. However, it won’t just be your average ordinary series. It’s something of a blend between an anthology and serialized tale.

Last June, we here at Lrm announced our partnership with the creators of the cult hit film Circle to bring the 8-episode Dark/Web horror anthology digital series to the small screen. With that announcement, we launched a contest that would incorporate a short script from one of our readers into an episode of the series, and a couple weeks back, we announced that winner to be Christopher Webster with his killer script, “Hacked.”

Yesterday, we shared with you that we are very close to announcing the winner of our Dark-web Call-for-Submission.  The response has been outstanding and the quality and talent of all the participating writers has made it very difficult to select a winning script!  Today, we want to give credit to the semi-finalist.  One of these very talented writers will have the chance to work with the producers and creators of the hit movie Circle and will have their winning script produced and seen my millions of Lrm readers.  As previously announced, these semi-finalist will receive a copy of the newly released DVD for the hit movie Circle signed by some of the cast and crew from the film.  Congratulations to our semi-finalist and good luck!

The globalization of modern genre cinema has thrown up another interesting fish. Australian producer Pete Ford has hired ex Warner Brothers International president Wayne Duband and announced their first film together will be Russian action adventure Cold Patrol. Cold Patrol follows a dogsled team in the Arctic that discovers an abandoned Soviet town that has been overtaken by zombie polar bears. Some early news is developing for Cold Patrol. Nikolai Pigareve (Meteletsa: Winter of the Dead) will direct a script from Christopher Webster. This is a feature that is set in the Arctic Circle near an abandoned Russian town. Here, a virus spreads turning locals and animals into monsters.
