- Lost half his right arm, the fingers and thumb on his left hand and his nose from frostbite during an ascent of Everest in 1996. Details in Jon Krakauer's book, "Into Thin Air."
- Ironically, the ascent of Everest which claimed his right hand to frostbite was supposed to be a self-celebratory gift of his 50th birthday.
- My guess is the sun warmed me up just enough that it triggered consciousness. [...] That was going to be the day of my daughter's first date. The things some fathers will do to keep their daughter from going out with some grubby-mitted boy.
- I gave up flying earlier this year [2015] at Peach's seriously strong encouragement.
- I've always been a storyteller. Peach says I could talk the ears off a rubber rabbit. But I didn't really have a story. And then I did.
- I've seen it ["Everest"] three times, and each time it basically runs me over. Emotionally it takes me apart.
- I'd never seen a Hollywood movie about climbing that I thought was worth a hoot. It always looked to me like a bunch of actors on a ski slope screaming at each other.
