Robert De Niro has starred in some of the greatest movies ever made, and even after 60 years, his career has no end in sight. From The Godfather: Part II to The Irishman, De Niro never turns in a bad performance, and in the early 1970s, De Niro made a name for himself by pairing up with director Martin Scorsese. However, it was the actor's team-up with director Michael Cimino for the film The Deer Hunter that was a game-changer in a world coping with the Vietnam War.

The Deer Hunter follows three working-class men before, during, and after serving in the Vietnam War. Mike Vronsky, Steven Pushkov, and Nikanor "Nick" Chevotarevich are Russian-Americans who live in a small steel mill town of Claritan, Pennsylvania. The film begins with Steven's wedding, taking place a mere couple of days before he ships off to Vietnam with Mike and Nick.

The Deer Hunter is not based on a true story but was adapted from an unproduced screenplay, with changes made to set it in Vietnam during the war. The film faced backlash for its historical inaccuracies, particularly the Russian roulette scene. Despite the criticisms, The Deer Hunter is still highly regarded for its compelling story, talented cast, and impressive filmmaking.

The Deer Hunter depicts three Russian-American working-class friends living in a small Western Pennsylvania town who decide to enlist in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, and some believe that the film is based on a true story. The 1978 epic war drama movie, which is over three hours long, starred Robert De Niro as Staff Sergeant Mike Vronsky, Christopher Walken as Corporal Nick Chevotarevich, and John Savage as Corporal Steven Pushkov. Their characters go through various ups and downs throughout the film once they come to understand the brutalities of war.

Peter Meyer a prominent talent agent who prior to launching his company was a William Morris agent for over a decade, died Monday following a years-long battle with sarcoma. He was 68.

“After a heroic five-year battle against sarcoma, Meyer found peace surrounded by his family. He will be deeply missed by his wife, Anna Maria, and his three children, Christopher, Sasha, and Chase, as well as by his brothers John & Michael, sister Patty, nephews Zachary, Nathan, and Matthew and the rest of the Meyer and Sistare families. He also will be mourned by his beloved friends and incredibly talented clients with whom he grew very close over the decades,” the family said in a statement, provided to TheWrap by Meyer’s sister, producer Patricia K Meyer.

Peter Meyer, who represented the likes of Tom Hanks, James Caan and William Shatner as a talent agent at William Morris before spending the past three decades leading his own management firm, has died. He was 68.

Meyer died May 14 in his Los Angeles home after a five-year battle with sarcoma, his sister, writer-producer Patricia K. Meyer (The Women of Brewster Place), announced. Survivors also include his son Chris Meyer, a talent agent at CAA.

After training under legendary Wma agent Stan Kamen, Meyer was hired as a talent agent in June 1978. His clients would include actors Sterling Hayden, Kevin Costner, Kathleen Turner, Christopher Walken, Steve Guttenberg and David Hasselhoff.

After 11 years at Wma, he launched Meyer Management in 1990 to represent directors, writers, producers and authors, selling their work and facilitating their employment across all entertainment platforms.

Quinn Redeker, a veteran TV actor best known for his roles on Days of Our Lives and The Young and the Restless, has died. He was 86.

Redeker died on Dec. 20, in Camarillo, California, his daughter confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter on Monday.

Redeker began his acting career in the early 1960s, with recurring roles on numerous TV shows, including Sea Hunt, Dan Raven, Wide Country, Bonanza, Ironside, The Virginian and countless others — largely appearing in guest roles on police dramas and westerns.

He continued his successful run as a frequent face on broadcast TV in dozens of hit shows before landing the role he would become best known for — playing Alex Marshall on the hit soap opera Days of Our Lives.

Quinn Redeker, who came up with the original script and Russian roulette idea for The Deer Hunter before starring as shady characters on the soap operas Days of Our Lives and The Young and the Restless, has died. He was 86.

Redeker died Dec. 20 of natural causes in Camarillo, California, his daughter, Arianne Raser, told The Hollywood Reporter.

Early in his career, Redeker appeared in The Three Stooges Meet Hercules (1962) and Jack Hill’s Spider Baby or, the Maddest Story Ever Told (1967), then graduated to more prestige fare, working with Robert Redford in The Candidate (1972), The Electric Horseman (1979) and Ordinary People (1980).

Inspired by a Life magazine article about a man who played Russian roulette for the camera, Redeker contacted screenwriter Louis Garfinkle in 1974 about teaming on a movie script about a guy in the Bahamas who made a living at the hazardous game.

When Silent Running was released in 1972 as a somewhat “experimental” venture from Universal Pictures, a studio that had decided to give a handful of new filmmakers a million dollars each to make whatever they wanted, it flew under the radar of most folks who weren’t into science fiction. After all, it was a tough challenge to come up with anything to compete with 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), which was still playing on second and third runs around the world. Silent Running did okay at the box office, but it wasn’t a runaway hit.

Nevertheless, Running, which was directed by one of 2001’s visual effects supervisors, Douglas Trumbull (it was his debut as a director), became a cult movie that has played revival houses and did good business on home video years later in multiple formats.

After killing John Wayne in The Cowboys but before trying to massacre the Super Bowl in Black Sunday, his forest ranger Freeman Lowell committed space piracy to save the trees, man! The only one back on Earth who seems to care is Joan Baez. Douglas Trumbull’s technically-accomplished first feature film does 2001 on a tiny budget, and creates something original, if a bit mushy. The screenplay by Derek Washburn, Michael Cimino and Steven Bochco reaches a wistful ending — but is it uplifting or depressing?

Douglas Trumbull’s 1972 film Silent Running celebrates its 45th anniversary with a special screening at Laemmle's Ahrya Fine Arts Theatre in Los Angeles. Starring Bruce Dern, Cliff Potts, and Ron Rifkin, the G-rated film runs 89 minutes and is being showcased on the big screen in a rare opportunity.

There can be little doubt that Jack Nicholson is one of the greatest movie stars in the history of the medium. He's had more Oscar nominations (twelve) and wins (three) than any other actor and has been an A-list star for over forty years now, remaining a legitimate box office draw in films like "Something's Gotta Give" and "The Departed" even in his seventh decade.
