Image

“This is a story for the daughters of the world,” declares director Joachim Ronning about honoring the legacy of the young woman at the center of the inspirational story at the heart of ‘Young Woman and the Sea.’ For our recent webchat he adds, “if there’s anything that I am drawn to, it’s true stories and especially true stories that I haven’t heard before. So when I heard this story about Trudy Ederle, I was baffled that I hadn’t heard it before, because it was such a worldwide event when it happened a hundred years ago, and then she’s been forgotten in time. Image
Colin Farrell has been active in the industry for the past two and a half decades, but his best roles appear to have come late in his career. The Irish actor’s only Academy Award nomination came for the role in The Banshees of Inisherin. In the same year as the tragicomedy, he also starred in Matt Reeves’ The Batman as the Penguin, a role that got a spin-off movie of its own.

The Penguin, which premiered on September 19, has received critical acclaim, proving that Farrell has put the days of dreading his Alexander role behind him. His personal life has been more colorful in the 2000s than his career, as he was romantically linked to several A-list stars and models. Did he settle down with any of them?

Image
Is Colin Farrell married?

Colin Farrell is an accomplished actor. As anyone watching Sunday night’s Emmy Awards can attest, he is also one of the handsomest actors on the planet.

He’s had some complex relationships — a few got downright messy — over the years.

But is he married at the moment? Asking for a friend, of course.

In 2000, Colin Farrell met Amelia Warner, a singer and a fellow actor. Their relationship was fairly brief — from July of 2001 through November of that same year.

There was speculation, however, that the two had covertly married. No one has ever been able to prove this claim, however.

Both actors were fairly young at the time. Farrell himself has acknowledged that the couple were “too fast, too young,...

‘Young Woman And The Sea’ Review: Daisy Ridley Inspires As First Woman To Swim English Channel In Disney’s Splendid Biopic
Image
There was a time when Disney made ideal family movies that weren’t animated, or live action reboots of animated films. In fact, there was a time when Walt Disney would take on original live action true stories designed for the whole family to enjoy.

Now, thanks to the efforts of director Joachim Ronning and mega-producer Jerry Bruckheimer’s clout and dedication, the studio has an echo of its past with Young Woman And The Sea, the true biopic and inspiring saga of Trudy Ederle.

In 1926, she became the first woman to swim the English Channel from France to England. Ederle’s remarkable achievement has nearly been forgotten and overlooked in the 100 years since it happened. But thanks to Glenn Stout’s 2009 book, Young Woman And The Sea: How Trudy Ederle Conquered The English Channel And Inspired The World, and A-List screenwriter Jeff Nathanson who discovered the book while rummaging through a bookstore one day and was convinced it would be a great film, the movie’s long journey to the screen is a successful one.

It still took years even for Bruckheimer to convince Disney to make it, and it is getting only a limited theatrical release before streaming. But hopefully, the inevitable word of mouth for this crowd-pleaser will make it more than limited. This is a big screen film that deserves to be seen with an audience, and not lost in the streaming larder. It also proves that they do make ’em like they used to, at least occasionally.

Basically following the linear story of Trudy (Olive Abercrombie plays the young Trudy), we see her early family life, and then her desire to make a difference for girls. The place she could do that was in the pool, an effort supported by her mother (Jeanette Hain), who knew from a previous ocean tragedy that learning to swim was important for her kids. That not only went for Trudy (Daisy Ridley), but also her older sister Meg (Tilda Cobham-Hervey), who would go on to become her sister’s biggest supporter, even on the boat that accompanied Trudy as she took on the English Channel.

Before that happened in 1926, Trudy would triumph and win a gold medal at the 1924 Paris Olympics. But taking on this task thought only possible for the male-dominated society of the time was something she became determined to do. It is no spoiler to say that indeed, on her second try, she did it even when it appeared she might be dead towards the end of the journey when she got lost in the darkness and separated from those keeping track of her. And in so doing this unheard-of feat, Trudy, who was partially deaf due to a childhood illness, beat previous male records by nearly two hours at 14 hours and 31 minutes (it held for 35 years), and this New York native got the largest victory parade ever in the history of the city. Ever.

But the crux of the story is seeing the perseverance it took to achieve this milestone, a belief that you never give up. Ridley simply embodies that spirit of this young woman (who eventually went deaf and died in 2003 at age 98) and delivers a memorable performance, including complete authenticity in her quest. Cobham-Hervey is excellent as well, and the parents are nicely played by Kim Bodnia as Henry, a dedicated German-born butcher and father who feared for his daughter, but then became a #1 fan, and especially by Hain, superb as the wise and determined mother, Gertrude, with a mind of her own and the will to do what is best for her family.

Stephen Graham is excellent and a lot of fun as the most unlikely of coaches, a man who, in 1911, became the second person to swim the Channel, and now is key to helping Trudy make history.

As you might expect with a Bruckheimer production, it looks magnificent, with excellent cinematography both above and below the waves (Oscar Faura was the Dp), production design from Nora Takacs Ekberg, and a sweeping score by Amelia Warner. Pulling all this off with so many water scenes could not have been easy, but Ronning, well-versed in water from Kon-Tiki and Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (which he did for Bruckheimer) was clearly the right choice for the job. It looks sensational.

Producers are Bruckheimer, Nathanson, and Chad Oman.

‘Young Woman and the Sea’ Review: Daisy Ridley in Paint-by-Numbers Inspirational Biopic
Image
Gertrude Ederle loved the water. “To me, the sea is like a person — like a child I’ve known a long time,” she once said. “ I never feel alone when I’m out there.”

That comfort combined with a dogged sense of determination led the young German American swimmer (played here by Daisy Ridley) to defy odds and sexist naysayers. In 1926, Ederle swam the English Channel in 14 hours and 31 minutes, beating the previous world record, which was held by a man. Her accomplishment helped change perceptions about women in competitive sports. When Ederle returned to New York, the city feted her with a parade on a scale never seen before (or since). They cheered her homecoming and dubbed her the Queen of the Waves.

Like all trailblazers, Ederle’s story began with obstacles and hostility, many of which director Joachim Rønning accords appropriate levels of respect in Young Woman and the Sea.

The Young Woman and the Sea Review: Trudy Ederle Biopic Is Flotsam and Jetsam
Image
You can rely on standard-issue Hollywood biopics to sand down the more complex edges of their central figures in favor of presenting clear, streamlined narrative and character arcs. Sports biopics tend to go one step further, rendering their protagonists as implacable forces of self-determination who allow nothing to get in the way of their ultimate triumph.

Some sports biopics avoid becoming simplistic odes to the value of hard work by either exploring the psychological turmoil that can fuel such tenacity, as in Raging Bull, or the physical and emotional costs of ceaselessly pushing oneself to succeed, as in The Iron Claw. But most are like The Young Woman and the Sea, trivializing the adversity that their subject faced by surrounding them with one-note foes that are easily defeated (and easier to root against) and barriers that are shattered as easily as swinging a sledgehammer at a thin glass ceiling.

Jamie Dornan Felt ‘Ridicule’ from Horrible Fifty Shades of Grey Reviews
Image
Jamie Dornan and his wife hid to escape the negative reviews of Fifty Shades of Grey. Despite the "ridicule," the Fifty Shades trilogy was a financial success, earning over $1.3 billion dollars at the worldwide box office. Dornan's portrayal of Christian Grey was brilliantly realistic and authentic, creating a pathos that other actors may not have been able to achieve for the character.

Jamie Dornan is not "fifty shades of fu—ed up," as Christian Grey so eloquently put it. That was merely a character appearing in a wildly successful film series. No, Dornan is an exceptional actor who claims that he and his wife, Amelia Warner, actually "hid" to escape those awful Fifty Shades of Grey reviews back in the day. Dornan said during his appearance on BBC Sounds’ Desert Island Discs podcast:

“I think I hid. You know, I'm coming off the back of career-altering reviews for The Fall and BAFTA nominations,...

‘50 Shades Of Grey’ Star Jamie Dornan Was Sent To The Emergency Room After Exposure To Poisonous Caterpillars On Vacation
Image
Jamie Dornan, known for his infamous role as Christian Grey in 50 Shades of Grey, was hospitalized with “heart attack symptoms,” after a toxic run-in with poisonous caterpillars during a trip to Portugal.

Dornan’s friend, Gordon Smart, who was also on the trip, was hospitalized for the same symptoms.

At first, the friends thought their symptoms were classic signs of one too many the night before.

After their conditions grew worse, they rushed themselves to the hospital. Doctors told them that their symptoms were caused by processionary caterpillars. These types of caterpillars have long hairs surrounding their body that cling to human skin very easily and spread their toxic proteins.

Dornan’s specific symptoms included “tingling in his left hand and tickling in his left arm” and made him believe it was “the sign of the start of a heart attack,” Smart told the podcast The Good, The Bad,...

Meet Jamie Dornan's 3 Daughters: Dulcie, Elva, and Alberta

Even if you're a fan of Jamie Dornan, there's plenty of mystery around his private life, which he tends to keep, well, private. The Fifty Shades actor has been married to composer Amelia Warner since 2013, three years after they started dating.

Dornan revealed on "Eamonn Mallie: Face to Face With" that he knew he would end up marrying Warner after they first met. "I didn't tell her that," the star of "The Tourist" said. "That would have been a bit too strong, I think, as an opener. It was definitely an epiphany moment. I feel like you'll have a few of those in your life."

The couple went on to welcome three girls, though he rarely posts about them on social media. On International Women's Day in 2022, the actor posted a photo of his wife and children all holding hands. "I'm nothing but a pile of dust without this crew,...

Image
Jamie Dornan’s daughters love dressing up as Wonder Woman.

The actor shares Dulcie, 9, Elva, 7, and Alberta, 4, with wife Amelia Warner and the actor recently spoke about their love of Gal Gadot’s superhero character.

Dornan — who stars in “Heart of Stone” alongside Gadot — chatted to Et Canada’s Morgan Hoffman about the flick, with her asking who in his family had the best reaction to him working with Gadot.

He shared, “My kids are a wee bit young, for that, you know, although we have a Wonder Woman costume that’s been passed down through all three kids and when they fit various sizes, they fit into it. And even there’s one who wouldn’t sort of give up on it and will still wear it, even though it’s way too tight, that sort of thing.

“We’ve lost one of the wrist things now so it...

‘Mr. Malcolm’s List’ Editor, Costume Designer and Composer on How They Captured the Film’s Web of Romances
Image
Click here to read the full article.

In Mr. Malcolm’s List, the nature of love is as diverse as the groundbreaking period rom-com’s casting.

The Regency-era film, adapted from Suzanne Allain’s book of the same name and directed by Emma Holly Jones in her feature debut, follows the romantic rollercoasters of four distinctly different people navigating the courting season: the handsome but guarded Jeremy Malcolm (Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù), the humble and intelligent Selina Dalton (Freida Pinto), the clever but insecure Julia Thistlewaite (Zawe Ashton) and the confident and charming Henry Ossory (Theo James).

Mixed up in a plan to humiliate Jeremy, the season’s most eligible bachelor, after his rejection of Julia makes her a public joke, Selina finds herself torn between her friend and her heart, while army captain Henry discovers that he may be romantically pursuing the wrong woman.

There’s a love square for the...

Image
Click here to read the full article.

For the team behind Bleecker Street’s enchanting Mr. Macolm’s List, determination and dedication were key to making a film that’s not only this summer’s sweetest romance, but in many ways, felt like an impossible feat.

During the New York premiere at the DGA Theatre, director Emma Holly Jones, screen and book writer Suzzane Allain and leading actors Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù and Freida Pinto spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about the film’s long and rocky journey to screen, what makes its leading actors so special and the women who helped bring the inclusive regency rom-com to screen.

Allain, who wrote the script as well as the original story — and who is currently writing two follow-ups — credited Jones with shepherding the film through its seven-year journey to getting made. “She was so determined and without her determination, I really don’t...

Zendaya Trades In Her Spider-Man, Tom Holland, For Andrew Garfield at the Oscars
Image
It looks like Andrew Garfield stepped in as Zendaya's Spider-Man at the 2022 Oscars. The two Spider-Man alums posed for a quick photo together on the red carpet on Sunday. Garfield - who was nominated for best actor in a leading role for "Tick, Tick... Boom!" - made a surprise appearance in "Spider-Man: No Way Home" alongside Zendaya and her boyfriend, Tom Holland, so their reunion was a sweet treat for Marvel fans.

Garfield talked about his epic comeback in an interview with Deadline in January, where he revealed that he had one condition for joining the franchise again. "Well, I was just waiting to see if Tobey [Maguire] was going to do it, and if Tobey was going to do it, then I was like, 'Well, I have no choice,' you know? I follow Tobey to the ends of the Earth. I'm a lemming for Tobey," he said. He...

Longtime Friends Andrew Garfield and Jamie Dornan Reunite at the Oscars
Andrew Garfield and Jamie Dornan had an adorable reunion on the red carpet at the 2022 Oscars. Garfield - who's nominated in the best actor category for his role in "Tick, Tick... Boom!" - photobombed Dornan (who stars in best picture nominee "Belfast") while he was taking photos with his wife, Amelia Warner. Dornan and Warner laughed at Garfield's hijinks, and then the old friends embraced each other.

Back in January, Dornan talked about the longtime rumor that he lived with Garfield, Eddie Redmayne, and Robert Pattinson back when they were all struggling actors in Los Angeles in the late 2000s. He confessed that he and Redmayne were direct roommates, but Garfield, Pattinson, and "Daredevil" star Charlie Cox were around all the time.

"I mean, there's loads of us who actually ended up going on to do pretty well for ourselves. But at the time we, we weren't. We were pretty,...

Universal Music Group Leads Awards Season Wins, Rules Classical Streams Thanks to Soundtrack, Score Streak
Image
With today’s release of Ludovico Einaudi’s “Cinema,” Universal Music Group confirms its status as one of the world’s most soundtrack-friendly music companies.

Music by Einaudi, the Italian composer and pianist, was featured in recent Oscar winners “Nomadland” and”The Father.” “Cinema” collects 28 pieces featured in those films and such earlier projects as “The Water Diviner,” “The Intouchables” and the miniseries “Doctor Zhivago.”

Each of the last seven Academy Award winners for original score was released or distributed by a Umg label or composed by a Umg artist, according to a spokesperson. Umg artists Jon Batiste and Hildur Guðnadóttir were the composers of “Soul” and “Joker,” respectively. “Grand Budapest Hotel” was on Abkco, “The Hateful Eight” and “The Shape of Water” on Decca, and “La La Land” and the “Black Panther” song album on Interscope.

Similarly, the last seven Grammy-winning scores, and the last seven BAFTA winners, were also Umg-affiliated.

Oscars’ Score and Song Frontrunners Come Into Focus as Shortlist Approaches
Image
As voting opens for the Oscar shortlists on Feb. 1, the picture is slowly coming into focus: Academy composers and songwriters are faced with one of the most diverse batches of scores they’ve ever heard.

The approximately 350 members of the Academy music branch are sifting through dozens of films to try and single out 15 scores and 15 songs worthy of placement on its shortlists, which will be revealed Feb. 9. These preliminary choices will be narrowed down to five final nominees in each category, to be announced March 15.

Best Original Score

It’s a surprisingly competitive year, making predictions even more difficult. But the music branch likes to reward familiar names, so look for such past winners as Alexandre Desplat (“Grand Budapest Hotel”) for his alternately melancholy and hopeful score for “The Midnight Sky”; Ludwig Göransson (“Black Panther”) for his propulsive, synth-orchestra hybrid for the intense spy thriller “Tenet”; and Howard Shore...

Jamie Dornan Gives Rare Glimpse Into His Life as a Dad With Hilarious Christmas Video
Jamie Dornan
For the sake of his children, Jamie Dornan should probably stick to acting. The 50 Shades of Grey star took to Instagram on Thursday, Dec. 24 to share a video of him attempting to get in the holiday spirit by singing Bing Crosby's "White Christmas." However, as soon as Dornan began to belt out the words, additional voices could be heard off-camera. And they were not impressed! "Shhh, Daddy! Shush!" Dornan and his wife Amelia Warner's three daughters—Alberta, 1, Elva, 4, and Dulcie, 7—yelled in unison. "Shush, Daddy! Shush!" The 38-year-old actor topped off the hilarious post with an equally funny caption: "Kids absolutely Loving...

John Patrick Shanley at an event for Rendez-vous l'été prochain (2010)
“Wild Mountain Thyme” Is The Strangest Romantic Comedy Of 2020
John Patrick Shanley at an event for Rendez-vous l'été prochain (2010)
Oh boy. I have so many questions for John Patrick Shanley. One of which is simply, why? Why was this the story you wanted to tell. Remember, Shanley has previously given us a classic romantic comedy in Moonstruck, penning that screenplay, as well as writing and directing a stirring drama in Doubt. He’s a talented man, no doubt. His return to rom coms, however, in Wild Mountain Thyme, makes his other directorial outing, Joe Versus the Volcano, seem perfectly normal by comparison. This is the weirdest film of the year, almost defying any real definition or verdict. It kind of has to be seen in order to be believed. Make of that what you will. The movie is a romantic comedy, though describing this one is going to be tough. In short, it’s a tale of Irish star-crossed lovers. Rosemary Muldoon (Emily Blunt) is a feisty snd opinionated...

A New Generation of Composers Steps Forward in Film
Image
A new generation of film composers is shaking up the status quo. They’re free-thinking, experimental, come from diverse backgrounds … and they’re not all men (although some of them are).

They like to start early, often compose before they’ve seen a frame of film, and aren’t afraid to try offbeat ideas, frequently in response to filmmakers’ demands to do “something different.”

For Amazon Prime’s “Radioactive,” Russian-born, Paris-based composers Evgueni and Sacha Galperine underscored the story of 19th century scientist Marie Curie (Rosamund Pike) with a startling sound of analog synthesizers and early 20th century electronic instruments like the theremin and Ondes Martenot.

Director Marjane Satrapi didn’t want the old-fashioned “biopic classical music with full orchestra,” says Evgueni. “She wanted something new and modern.” The discoverer of radium was “ahead of her time, not only as a scientist but also as a woman. She was like...

Emily Blunt and Jamie Dornan Have an Irish Romance in ‘Wild Mountain Thyme’ Trailer
Image
Emily Blunt and Jamie Dornan have a very Irish romance in the brand new trailer for “Wild Mountain Thyme,” released on Tuesday.

Set in Ireland, the movie centers on Anthony (Dornan), who works in the fields under the constant belittling of his father (Christopher Walken), who has threatened to leave the family farm to Anthony’s American cousin Adam (Jon Hamm). A shy and worn-down Anthony doesn’t notice that Rosemary (Blunt), a childhood friend, has been attracted to him for years, despite feeling resentment for having been shamed by Anthony earlier. Caught between their families’ land dispute, sparks fly between the couple. Meanwhile, Rosemary’s mother, Aoife (Dearbhla Molloy), strives to unite the families before it is too late.

“Wild Mountain Thyme” is directed by John Patrick Shanley, and the film is adapted from his Broadway play “Outside Mullingar” from 2014. The original play starred Brian F. O’Byrne, Dearbhla Molloy,...

Amelia Warner to Compose Score for ‘Wild Mountain Thyme’ for Bleecker Street (Exclusive)
Image
In a year that presents the opportunity for new and diverse voices in the awards race, another one has been added to the mix for best original score. Variety has learned exclusively that neo-classical composer Amelia Warner will helm the music for John Patrick Shanley’s “Wild Mountain Thyme” starring Emily Blunt and Jamie Dornan.

Best known for her work on Haifaa al-Mansour’s “Mary Shelley” in 2018, Warner has dabbled both in music and acting. With roles in “Quills,” “Aeon Flux” and “Winter Passing,” this film marks just her third film composition. Warner was named the breakthrough composer of the year at the 2019 International Film Music Critics Awards.

While the awards season could present a record-breaking number of women nominated in categories like best picture and director, the race for best original score is very limited for female composers. Warner hopes to break through the male-heavy list of contenders that...

Glenn Close and Jonathan Pryce in The Wife (2017)
Oscars’ Scoring Contenders: Short on Diversity, Long on Patriarchy (Guest Column)
Glenn Close and Jonathan Pryce in The Wife (2017)
“The Wife.” “Eighth Grade.” “Rbg.” “Sicario: Day of the Soldado.” “Mary Shelley.”

Those are just a few of the 2018 films scored by women, but when the shortlist for best original score was announced last month, all of the 15 scores whittled down by music branch members for the first round of Oscar consideration were composed by men.

“It shows that women are not getting the top films,” says Laura Karpman, a composer (“Paris Can Wait”) and governor of the music branch. “And that there is a continued invisibility.”

Karpman pushed hard for the shortlist — this is the first year since 1979 that the music branch has had one, joining a third of the other branches in the practice — explicitly in the hope that it would widen the field. She feels that if there had been a shortlist last year, Michael Abels (“Get Out”) and Tamar-kali (“Mudbound”) would certainly have been on it.

Paddington 2 (2017)
The 10 Best Movie Scores of 2018, Ranked
Paddington 2 (2017)
The movie scores of 2018 have been as eclectic as the movies themselves, with any list of the year’s best forced to hop between the pep of “Paddington 2,” the swoons of “If Beale Street Could Talk,” the bloody tumult of “Mandy,” and the regal triumph of “Black Panther.” Yes, for the first time in forever, the score for a Marvel movie was worthy of being discussed alongside work from the likes of Jonny Greenwood and Justin Hurwitz. In fact, there was too much great work this year to celebrate all of it, especially in under-the-radar films like “Mary Shelley” (Amelia Warner), “Nostalgia” (Laurent Eyquem), and “Madeline’s Madeline” (Caroline Shaw). And while attention is too seldom paid to the original music in foreign films, the likes of “Burning” (Mowg) and “Capernaum” (Khaled Mouzanar) boasted indelibly evocative scores, as well.

2018 also featured a number of memorable soundtracks full of original...

Jamie Dornan Opens Up About His Wife Expecting Baby No. 3

Understandably, Jamie Dornan has babies on the brain. The star of A Private War appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Monday, two weeks after he announced that he's expecting Baby No. 3 with wife Amelia Warner. "Not that I think you couldn't do it; I definitely know for sure that you can." "Do you think it's a good idea?" Dornan asked. If it were up to the actor, he'd continue making babies with Warner for years to come. "Part of me feels like [I need] to put a cork in it after this. But then alternatively, I feel like we make...
