A Lotta Love to Give: The Brilliant Voice and Too-Short Life of Nicolette Larson
Image
When Nicolette Larson was growing up in Kansas City, Missouri, she’d ask her friends to drive over bumpy roads so she could show off her Neil Young impression. As the truck moved up and down, she’d break out into a shaky vibrato.

Just a few years later, the singer found herself in a pickup again, this time with the very man she once emulated. Young — who first worked with Larson on his 1977 LP American Stars ‘n Bars, and briefly dated her afterward — was driving her around his Northern...

Joe Diffie
Joe Diffie, Nineties Country’s ‘Pickup Man,’ Dead at 61 From Coronavirus
Joe Diffie
Joe Diffie, a consistent country-music hitmaker throughout the Nineties, died Sunday due to complications related to Covid-19. His publicist confirmed the death to Rolling Stone. Diffie was 61.

With a traditional-leaning voice that drew comparisons to George Jones, Diffie populated his records with honky-tonk ballads and lighthearted novelty tunes, earning the Oklahoma native five Number One singles in the first half of the Nineties. These began with his debut release, the deeply moving “Home,” followed by “If the Devil Danced (In Empty Pockets),” “Third Rock From the Sun,” “Pickup Man,” and “Bigger Than the Beatles.

Could this finally be the year for Tanya Tucker, who just won her first ever Grammy Awards after a career beginning back in the 1970s? Or will it be a more recent artist now eligible, such as Kenny Chesney, Tim McGraw or Shania Twain?

SEEBiggest Grammy Winners of All Time: See The Most Awarded Artists

The criteria is pretty simple to get in but it’s an exclusive group since only 2-3 people are inducted each year. One person will be from the Modern Era category (an artist who came to prominence at least 20 years ago). Another will be from the Veterans Era (an artist who came to prominence at least 45 years ago). A third inductee would be a non-performer,...

Nashville Says Goodbye to Little Jimmy Dickens
The country music community gathered in Nashville on Thursday to say goodbye to legendary performer Little Jimmy Dickens, and not surprisingly, the focus was on his size: His huge smile and big laugh. His great heart. His enormous sense of humor. His larger-than-life stage personality. In fact if anything became abundantly clear during the two-hour funeral at the Grand Ole Opry House where Dickens had performed countless times, it was this: His height - all 4 feet 11 inches - was the only thing about Little Jimmy Dickens that was small. Longtime friend and fishing buddy Brad Paisley presided over the public celebration of Dickens's life,...

Little Big Town: Nashville Rebuilding from Flood Losses
The disastrous flood that hit Tennessee did not leave Nashville's music community untouched. "All our gear, our instruments, backdrops, risers - it's all gone to water," says Little Big Town's Karen Fairchild. "A lot of things that can't be replaced, like [bandmate Phillip Sweet's] 1933 Gibson was down there. It's so sad." The band was one of many acts that stored equipment and personal instruments at Nashville's Soundcheck storage facility and rehearsal space, which was submerged in the flooding. Just as touring season was about to begin, Brad Paisley lost gear, and both Keith Urban and Vince Gill have vintage guitar collections in the buildings.

Plant & Krauss Are The King And Queen Of The Grammys
Former Led Zeppelin star Robert Plant and his new performance partner Alison Krauss were the toast of the 51st Grammy Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday night after claiming a fistful of honours. The duo picked up awards for Album of The Year, Record of The Year, Best Pop Collaboration, Best Country Collaboration and Best Contemporary Folk/Americana Album.

Lil Wayne, who was the most nominated artist at this year's Grammys, took home three prizes and a share of the Best Rap Performance for a Duo or Group for Swagga Like Us with Jay-z, T.I. and Kanye West.

Coldplay were also triple winners, claiming Song of The Year, Best Rock Album and Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocals.

Double winners included Metallica, Al Green, Daft Punk, gospel star Kirk Franklin, Brad Paisley and Peter Gabriel and composer Thomas Newman, who won honours for their work on the Wall-e soundtrack.

Neil Diamond, the Four Tops, Dean Martin and music mogul Clive Davis were among those honoured with special awards during the ceremony.

The night was a star-studded affair - with more performers than ever before hitting the stage at the Staples Center in Los Angeles for the event.

Highlights included Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift's duet on the country star's 15, Jennifer Hudson's stirring rendition of Diane Warren's You Pulled Me Through - backed by a gospel choir, the Jonas Brothers' collaboration with Stevie Wonder, Coldplay's performance with rapper Jay-z and Lil Wayne and Robin Thicke's rousing tribute to New Orleans with Terence Blanchard and Allen Toussaint.

Rockers U2 kicked off the 51st Grammys with new song Get on Your Boots and heavily-pregnant M.I.A., who was due to give birth on Sunday, performed Paper Planes/Swagga Like Us with rappers Lil Wayne, Jay-z, T.I. and Kanye West.

2009 Grammy Awards Live Blog
As we said in our Grammy Predictions, we have a love/hate relationship with the Grammys. But hey, we love music, so we're watching to see what happens. Could be a big year for Lil Wayne (did you see his interview with "Miss" Katie Couric?). Could be a controversial night if Coldplay's alleged Joe Satriani rip-off grabs some hardware ("Viva La Vida" by Coldplay and Satriani's "If I Could Fly"). But plenty of great artists are nominated (M.I.A., Allison Krauss/Robert Plant, Radiohead, Gnarls Barkley, Daft Punk, Brazilian Girls....we could go on), so as always, it'll be worth watching, especially for the performances. Unlike the Oscars, where the show is pretty much all about the host, the Grammys are all about those live performances (remember when Beyonce stole the show with Prince back in 2004?). Hang with us and add to the conversation in the comments!

11:30 (Josh and Nick): Goodnight,...

Brad Paisley: Play
Play It Louder

By Shane Harrison

Play is a big gamble—a largely instrumental album from one of country’s most reliable hit makers. You can just hear the Nashville suits gnashing their teeth, asking, “Where are the hits?” They might be here, but only among the four vocal tracks. Play is at its best, though, when Telecaster master Paisley is tearing it up on his twangy six-string. On album opener “Huckleberry Jam,” Paisley’s guitar rolls and tumbles like an Olympic gymnast, trading licks with the pedal steel and banjo. Play is pretty (“Kim”), finger-popping (the cocktail jazzy “Les Is More”) and goofy fun. “Turf’s Up” sends country to the beach, as Paisley channels both the living (surf-guitar god Dick Dale) and the dead (country-guitar titan Chet Atkins). When guest six-string slingers James Burton, Vince Gill, John Jorgensen, Albert Lee, Redd Volkaert and Steve Wariner join Paisley for...
