Netflix picked up the rights to Stephen King's 1981 novel Cujo and is currently developing a new adaptation. Now, The Hollywood Reporter says acclaimed director Darren Aronofsky—best known for Requiem for a Dream, Black Swan, Mother!, and The Whale—is circling the project.
The 1983 version directed by Lewis Teague was a modest box office success despite garnering mixed reviews. In the decades since, Cujo has become a cult classic, with many praising the central performance from Dee Wallace who plays a desperate mother trying to protect her son from Cujo's wrath.

One of the film's most famous scenes is the climactic car showdown toward the end, when Cujo is frantically trying to break into Donna's (Wallace) vehicle as she hides inside it with her son. As...

Darren Aronofsky is circling to direct Netflix’s Cujo film, based on the novel by Stephen King.
Deadline first reported the news of the film adaptation , with Roy Lee attached to produce in the deal made last week.
The 1981 novel was originally adapted into a thriller film in 1983 starring Dee Wallace as a mother protecting her sone from a 200-pound St. Bernard that turned rabid after being bit by a bat. The formerly friendly hound transformed into one of cold calculation that left a trail of bodies in its wake.
The climactic scene in that film took place when Wallace’s mother and her son face the difficult decision of battling heatstroke in a car that won’t start or confronting the big, rabid dog waiting for them outside the small vehicle.
Aronofsky’s more recent projects include Postcard from Earth (2023) and The Whale (2022) starring Brendan Fraser...

We found out last week that a new take on Stephen King's killer dog novel, Cujo, is in the works for Netflix, and the project may have nabbed a somewhat surprising director.
According to Jeff Sneider in his latest newsletter (and since backed up by THR), Darren Aronofsky is in negotiations to helm the movie.
Though some would consider this the filmmaker's first foray into the horror genre, that's certainly debatable. Aronofsky has included horror elements in a number of his previous films, and many would view the likes of Mother!, Black Swan, and even Requiem for a Dream to be full-on horror movies.
King's novel focuses on a mother and her young seizer-prone son being terrorized by a huge St. Bernard who becomes a rabid killing machine after being bitten by a bat.
Cujo was previously adapted for the big screen back in 1983, with Lewis Teague directing from...

It was reported last week that Netflix closed a deal with producer Roy Lee to bring a new adaptation of Stephen King's 1981 novel Cujo to life, and now it appears as if a director not named Mike Flanagan is close to signing a deal to helm the project. Cujo is, of course, the beloved survival horror novel about a rabid St. Bernard that goes on a terror through the town of Castle Rock, focusing mainly on a woman and her son who are trapped in a car under the blazing hot sun.
Per The InSneider, Requiem for a Dream director Darren Aronofsky is in negotiations to close a deal that will see him direct the new Netflix adaptation of Cuju. Aronosfky's previous work not only includes the aforementioned psychological drama, but the Academy Award-winning films Black Swan and The Whale, as well as the sci-fi romance The Fountain, and 2008's The Wrestler,...

Darren Aronofsky is circling Netflix’s “Cujo,” a remake of Stephen King’s horror novel about a bloodthirsty St. Bernard.
“Cujo” remains in early stages of development and Aronofsky has yet to have a creative meeting with Netflix, according to sources familiar with the project. Should the deal close, the film would mark Aronofsky’s first feature for a streaming service.
Although occasionally courted by Hollywood (he was an early contender to reboot “Batman” before Christopher Nolan took over), Aronofsky has mostly stayed true to his indie roots. The filmmaker has directed such films as psychological drama “Requiem for a Dream,” psychological thriller “Black Swan,” psychological horror allegory “Mother!” and psychological case study “The Whale.” He’s currently putting the finishing touches on Sony’s “Caught Stealing,” a crime drama with Austin Butler and Zoe Kravitz that opens in theaters this August.

There have been rumblings of a remake of the classic Stephen King adaptation Cujo for a long time – in fact, one was officially announced way back in 2013. In 2015, we heard that the remake had taken an unexpected turn, reimagining the name Cujo as an acronym that stood for Canine Unit Joint Operations. That project seemed to be scrapped when King got the rights to the story back in 2017… But last week, we learned that the Cujo remake has found a new home: the Netflix streaming service. And now, industry scooper Jeff Sneider of The InSneider reports that a director might be close to signing on to the project, as Darren Aronofsky is said to be in negotiations to take the helm.

Killer dog tale Cujo, by Stephen King, is getting a new telling, backed by Netflix money. More on the story here.
There’s an old maxim that suggests that there’s always at least three Robin Hood films in development at the same time. Given the never-ending glut of Stephen King adaptations that are pumped out, it would probably be more accurate these days to replace Sherwood Forest’s rogueish outlaw with the prolific novelist who always seems to have a take on his work in cinemas, or just around the corner.
Case in point: while Osgood Perkins’ take on The Monkey is still in cinemas, 2025 will also bring us Mike Flanagan’s The Life Of Chuck and Edgar Wright’s The Running Man. On the small screen, there’s also HBO’s Welcome To Derry and MGM+’s The Institute debuting this year too.

Netflix has given a green light to a movie reboot of the Stephen King novel Cujo, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
Roy Lee will produce the remake of the horror story about a mother and son who fight off a rabid dog while trapped in their car. Iconic Stephen King Story Getting New Adaptation At Netflix After '80s Movie Changed Its Dark Ending
Stephen King is one of the most frequently adapted authors in film and television history, with these projects garnering wide acclaim for several decades. Brian De Palma’s adaptation of King’s debut novel, Carrie, created a legendary horror sequence in 1976 when Sissy Spacek was drenched in pig's blood. In 1980, Stanley Kubrick directed The Shining with a visually stunning yet off-kilter take on King’s novel. Ten years later, Misery won Kathy Bates an Academy Award for her chilling performance as an obsessed literary fan, with other successful King adaptations including Stand By Me, Green Mile, and The Shawshank Redemption.
Recent years have seen a resurgence in King adaptations, with Andy Muschietti's It (2017) and It Chapter Two (2019) revitalizing the horror franchise as Bill Skarsgård took on the role of the killer clown Pennywise. Despite its box office struggles, Doctor Sleep (2019), a sequel to Kubrick's 1980 film, received positive reviews...

Netflix is preparing to make another Stephen King adaptation! According to a new Deadline exclusive, the streamer has finalized a deal to adapt King's novel Cujo into a new feature film with Roy Lee set to produce.
Lee is a well-known horror movie producer, having produced hit movies like Barbarian, Strange Darling, Companion, The Ring, and more. He's also producing the upcoming films Weapons and Until Dawn. But most notably, Lee has produced multiple King projects such as Doctor Sleep, Salem's Lot, It, It: Chapter Two, and The Stand. And Netflix has released a few adaptations, too, between Gerald's Game, 1922, and In the Tall Grass, so Lee and Netflix working together makes a lot of sense.
First published in 1981, Cujo is King's novel about a once sweet Saint Bernard who gets bit by a bat and turns rabid. From there, the massive animal goes on a rampage, killing multiple people throughout the book.

Here’s the full synopsis for King’s novel: “Outside a peaceful town in central Maine, a monster is waiting. Cujo is a two-hundred-pound Saint Bernard, the best friend Brett Camber has ever had. One day, Cujo...

Exclusive: Netflix has made a deal to turn the Stephen King bestselling novel Cujo into a new feature film. Roy Lee is producing, and they will go out to writers immediately.
The novel, originally published in 1981, was first turned into a 1983 thriller that starred Dee Wallace as a mother desperate to protect her son from a formerly friendly 200-pound St. Bernard that has been bitten by a rabid bat and turns into a ferocious, calculating hound that leaves a trail of bodies. Mom and her son get stuck in her small car that won’t start, and their choices are to battle it out with the rabid oversized hound or risk heatstroke in a hot car.
The film was one of many adaptations of King’s thriller bestsellers that turned into film hits.

"Toto, I've a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore," Dorothy famously stated in a movie quote considered the fourth greatest ever by the American Film Institute. No, Dorothy, you're not -- you're in Hollywood! With a population just shy of three million, the entire state of Kansas has less residents than New York City and Los Angeles, while it's just a hair above Chicago. Yet when it comes to the movies, "The Wheat State" punches far above its weight, with cinematic representation including Academy Award winners, blockbusters, and even films that have joined the hallowed ranks of the National Film Registry. What gives?
Perhaps it's because filmmakers consider the 34th state the perfect great plains state, with its waving wheat fields and endless horizons. More than anything, maybe it's the welcoming Kansas culture of "midwest nice" that has never met a stranger. Whatever the reason, "The Sunflower State" has proven...

For many horror fans, no decade did it better than the 1980s. Sure, that was the slasher heyday, but there was so much more going on as well, from monster movies to wild body horror films. Two decades later, in 2006, three '80s horror legends reunited for writer and director Ryan Schifrin's Abominable. Among the cast are Dee Wallace (The Howling),Lance Henriksen (Pumpkinhead), and Jeffrey Combs (Re-Animator), but it's Matt McCoy who is the true star in this fright fest that's part Rear Window and part monster movie, because the title is in reference to a killer sasquatch. Yep, Abominable is a Bigfoot movie, but don't roll your eyes just yet. Although Abominable is campy, it's also terrifying, with a fun story, and a creepy-looking beast you won't soon forget.

With Stranger Things concluding in epic fashion this year, The Duffer Brothers (that’s Matt and Ross) are going to have to find a way to fill their time; after all, they’ve spent a decade on that show alone. With that, The Duffer Brothers have a couple of projects going on, one of which is The Boroughs, another project in development for Netflix. And while it might not be taking viewers to the Upside Down, it does share some qualities.
The Duffer Brothers turned up at the Next on Netflix event this week to not only promote Stranger Things but The Boroughs and Something Very Bad is Going to Happen, in which they will serve as executive producers. On these, Matt said, “Of the two projects, The Boroughs probably shares the most DNA with Stranger Things because it’s about a group of misfits who fight an otherworldly evil.

Steven Spielberg says that his efforts to prevent a sequel to E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial influenced his decision to secure “freeze” rights on his future projects.
The Oscar-winning director recalled stopping a follow-up to his beloved 1982 film, saying he has “no intention” of ever making a sequel, while discussing the movie with star Drew Barrymore on Saturday night as part of the TCM Classic Film Festival: New York Pop-Up x 92Ny event.
“That was a real hard-fought victory because I didn’t have any rights. Before E.T., I had some rights, but I didn’t have a lot of rights,” he told the crowd. “I kind of didn’t have what we call ‘the freeze,’ where you can stop the studio from making a sequel because you control the freeze on sequels, remakes and other ancillary uses of the IP. I didn’t have that. I got it after E.

Some of the best horror movies of the 1980s flew completely under the radar, and deserve a closer look from modern horror fans despite their obscurity. With so many brilliant horror movies made in the 1980s, it isn't a surprise that so many great entries in the genre have fallen by the wayside. That doesn't mean that they aren't worth watching by any means, as the decade was rife with hidden gems that deserve more recognition.
The 80s is best known for its many iconic slasher movie franchises that began or fully picked up steam in the decade. But for every Friday the 13th that picked up popular acclaim as the years went on, there were double the number of quietly amazing scary movies that went largely unheard of even to this day. Whether they're psychological thrillers, supernatural creature features, or good old-fashioned ghost stories, these forgotten films truly deserve to be household names.

Nearly every culture tells similar folk tales about creepy old hags that practice witchcraft and prey on unsuspecting children, with this irrational fear being at the heart of several real-life tragedies that ended with innocent women being put to death. That’s why I find the idea of redemptive witchcraft stories like The Good Witch and even the ultra-successful Wicked adaptation so fascinating, as despite having been commodified as one of the cutesy mascots of the Halloween season, witches are still at the heart of many of our most frightening stories.
Naturally, this also extends to horror movies, with filmmakers depicting terrifying acts of witchcraft on screen since the very dawn of the medium. And with so many creepy broom-riders out there, we’ve decided to come up with a list celebrating six of the scariest witches in film. After all, there’s a lot more to these sinister spellcasters than black cats and candy-houses.

Presented by Steven C. Miller’s Werewolves, Bloody Disgusting is looking to the stars and howling at the moon with Werewolves Week. Today, Jenn Adams sprouts claws and explores the history of werewolf women in horror cinema.
Werewolf folklore has existed since the dawn of recorded history, with each diverse culture creating its own variation of humanoid wolves who emerge from the skin of seemingly ordinary men. Reflecting the dual nature of humanity, most tales involve deception and betrayal, with creatures presenting as friends and neighbors before transforming into beasts under the light of a full moon. Modern interpretations have begun to use this horrific allegory as a vehicle through which to explore the experience of womanhood.
Female werewolves often exhibit uncomfortably aggressive sexuality and buck the expectations of well-behaved women. Many iterations feel quite liberating and present the female werewolf as an aspirational goddess embracing carnal desire, while others...

Soon there will be a new streaming home for terror. The 1983 movie, Cujo, based on the Stephen King novel of the same name, is heading to Paramount+ next month.
However, Cujo's arrival on Paramount+ on Dec. 1 comes with a slight catch. If King fans want to stream the cult classic, they will need the Showtime add-on. Directed by Lewis Teague, Cujo stars Dee Wallace and Danny Pintauro as a mother and son who are trapped inside their car while protecting themselves from the titular rabid St. Bernard. Although the horror movie received mixed reviews and a modest box office return during its original release, Cujo has since become a cult classic.

Fact: E.T. is a Halloween movie. Make no mistake about that. The landmark Steven Spielberg blockbuster primarily takes place in October with the most iconic sequence — that being the moon-tinted bike ride, which has become the literal logo for Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment — goes down on All Hallow’s Eve. So, consider this episode a timely treat.
At last month’s Creep I.E. Aftermath in Ontario, California, Halloweenies executive producer Michael Roffman and Scare You to Sleep creator Shelby Scott presided over an E.T. reunion panel featuring stars Henry Thomas, Dee Wallace, Robert MacNaughton, C. Thomas Howell, and Matthew De Meritt. Together, they share personal anecdotes on the film’s shoot and reflect on the way the film went on to shape modern Americana — seemingly overnight.

On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
In October 2024, we’re doing the Midnight Movie Monster Mash with films that challenge our understanding of evil characters and creatures just in time for Halloween.
First, read the spoiler-free Bait: a weird and wonderful pick from any time in film. Then, come back for the Bite: a breakdown of all the spoiler-y bits you’d want to unpack when exiting a theater.
The Bait: A Meta Slasher That Should Be a Genre Standard
There comes a time in every internet writer’s life when they must make the dreaded Public Apology. For me, this is that day, and to my beloved After Dark loyalists, I am sorry. You’ll have to excuse me for not crying on camera, but the tragedy of the truth is too much to bear: “Popcorn” is unavailable to stream.

Gravitas Ventures has announced the acquisition of U.S. and Canadian rights for the science fiction feature “Roswell Delirium,” which is scheduled to release in January on both cable and digital video on demand.
“During the 1980s the US is hit by a wave of nuclear attacks, and after the fallout those who remain pretend like everything is normal even though they are all experiencing radiation poisoning. A young girl named Mayday tries to make contact on a series of ham radios with her father who is in space on a shuttle mission. Instead of making contact she receives an intergalactic distress call from space that leads her on a journey to Space Rock, the land where Area 51 once was. She is exposed to severe levels of radiation and within days all of her organs start to fail. Knowing that medical treatment won’t help her mother, Wendy brings her...

Stephen King believes the best performance out of his screen adaptations comes from an underrated 1980s chiller. The 1980s were a prolific period for Stephen King book adaptations. It felt like every major filmmaker - from Stanley Kubrick to John Carpenter and Rob Reiner - had to helm at least one film based on his work. Even King got in on the action with 1986's Maximum Overdrive, though sadly, that might be the worst Stephen King movie of the bunch.
King might be permanently associated with the horror genre, but he's behind some outstanding dramas too. Several films based on his books have been Oscar-nominated, including Stand by Me, Carrie and The Green Mile. Misery is the only King film with an Oscar win, which went to Kathy Bates for her unforgettable turn as superfan Annie Wilkes. King adaptations have provided many actors with some of their most iconic roles,...

A funny thing happened to a bunch of actors before they made it to the podium to accept their Academy Awards. Long before they received the industry’s highest recognition, they appeared in goofy sitcoms that didn’t exactly predict triumphant movie careers.
Here are five actors who eventually took home the Oscar — but not before generating a few canned laughs in front of a live studio audience…
1 Ke Huy Quan, ‘Together We Stand’
After your career begins with a Steven Spielberg movie — as Quan’s did with Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom — there’s probably nowhere to go but down. After Spielberg tossed him another gift with The Goonies, Quan found himself on Together We Stand, a generic blended-family sitcom starring Elliott Gould and E.T.’s Dee Wallace as Mom and Dad. The show was so lousy that it killed off Gould after six episodes and...
