Why MTV's The State Ended And Created A Rift Between The Alternative Sketch Comedy Group
Image
Back in the 1990s, sketch comedy was mostly dominated by "Saturday Night Live." After a rough patch in the 1980s, the series rose to prominence again thanks to the talents of "Wayne's World" stars Mike Myers and Dana Carvey, Chris Farley, Adam Sandler, Will Ferrell, Cheri Oteri, Molly Shannon, and more. But during this time, there were also a series of worthy, alternative sketch comedy competitors that offered a nice change of pace from the mainstream network laughs of "SNL."

From the delightfully Canadian comedy of "Kids in the Hall," to the diverse hilarity of "In Living Color," the short-lived but brilliant "The Dana Carvey Show," to the madness of "Upright Citizens Brigade," there was a sketch comedy show for everyone. But perhaps the series that would go on to have the biggest impact in pop culture's future was MTV's "The State," named after the comedy troupe of the same name.

‘The Four Seasons’ Standout Kerri Kenney-Silver Talks Learning to Do Everything Yourself | ‘What No One Tells You’
Image
Building your professional toolkit is not an overnight task. For actress/writer/comedienne Kerri Kenney-Silver, even though she continues to adapt with more dramatic work like “The Four Seasons,” she still holds true to what she learned when pursuing sketch comedy in college: Know how to do it all.

Speaking to IndieWire’s Future of Filmmaking for the latest episode of “What No One Tells You,” Kenney-Silver said of her early years in comedy, “You are doing everything. You are the prop master. You are doing your own makeup. You’re slapping on wigs. You’ve got Ziplocs full of mustaches.”

The sketch group Kenney-Silver joined at New York University would go on to become the beloved comedy troupe The State, which also featured David Wain, Joe Lo Truglio, Thomas Lennon, Michael Ian Black, Michael Showalter, and Ken Marino. When they were just starting out in 1992, every aspect of their performances were self-curated.

MTV’s the State Look Back on Early Years in New Documentary: ‘It Was Intense in Every Way’
Image
The MTV sketch comedy show The State ran for a mere 24 episodes between January 1994 and August 1995. And if you weren’t a teenager or young adult during that narrow window of time, odds are high you’ve never even heard of it. But the show left an enormous cultural footprint and launched the careers of some of the greatest comedic minds working today, including Thomas Lennon, Michael Showalter, Kerri Kenney-Silver, Ken Marino, David Wain, Ben Garant, and Kevin Allison, and ultimately led to Wet Hot American Summer, Reno 911!, Children’s Hospital,...

The Karate Kid franchise continues with a new installment slated to hit theaters at the end of the month, titled Karate Kid: Legends. The movie will bring back Ralph Macchio as Daniel Larusso and Jackie Chan as Mr. Han.

Speaking about his new role, where he had to do stunt work for the first time, and praised the team when speaking to Cbr's Grae Drake.

Asked how he surprised himself for his abilities while filming the martial arts film, Wang replied, "How I surprised myself? I mean, I didn't."

To this, Macchio jumped in, "Did you think you'd be as good as you are?...

‘Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping’ Adds ‘Karate Kid: Legends’ Star to Prequel
Image
Lionsgate’s return to Panem just got even more exciting. Ben Wang, the breakout star of American Born Chinese and the upcoming Karate Kid: Legends, has officially been cast as Wyatt Callow — the male District 12 tribute in The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping. The upcoming prequel will serve as the next film in Suzanne Collins’ blockbuster dystopian saga. Wang joins an already stacked cast that includes Joseph Zada as a young Haymitch Abernathy, Whitney Peak as Lenore Dove Baird, Mckenna Grace as Maysilee Donner, Jesse Plemons as Plutarch Heavensbee, Maya Hawke as Wiress, Kelvin Harrison Jr. as Beetee, and Lili Taylor as Mags.

Set 24 years before the original Hunger Games trilogy, Sunrise on the Reaping opens on the day of the 50th Hunger Games — the notoriously bloody Second Quarter Quell. Fans of the franchise will remember that Haymitch’s brutal victory in that Quell became a defining chapter in his character’s tragic backstory.

‘The Four Seasons’ Gives Kerri Kenney-Silver Her Long-Overdue Close-Up
Image
This article contains some spoilers for the Netflix series The Four Seasons.

When Kerri Kenney-Silver went to audition for one of the lead roles in The Four Seasons, she figured she had absolutely no shot. It wasn’t because she lacked the experience or acting chops. Kenney-Silver is a member of the iconic Nineties sketch comedy troupe the State, logged two decades as the dunderheaded Trudy Wiegel on Reno 911!, and has had recurring roles on Superstore, 2 Broke Girls, Love, and countless other sitcoms and cartoons.

But this was a...

Somehow, the ‘Wet Hot American Summer’ Guys Are Pulling Off A ‘Mad Men’ Reunion
Image
Jon Hamm and John Slattery will work together again on David Wain and Ken Marino’s new R-rated comedy that currently remains untitled, but I bet they have someone on the team who can come up with something marketable.

Early on in their careers, Wain and Marino had a habit of turning relatively-to-completely unknown actors into massive stars through projects like their cult-hit comedy Wet Hot American Summer. Between Bradley Cooper, Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler alone, the veterans of the massively influential sketch comedy group The State are some of the most important kingmakers in the history of comedy, TV and film, and their breakthrough hit parody of 1980s teen sex comedies spawned both a prequel and a sequel series on Netflix that attracted big-name talent.

For Wain and Marino’s next project, they’re returning to the R-rated sex comedy format, only, instead of turning their actors into Emmy-worthy A-listers,...

Jon Hamm, John Slattery, Zoey Deutch Join David Wain's New Comedy
Image
Jon Hamm has been on fire lately, isn't he? The Mad Men actor has found success with his new AppleTV+ show, Your Friends and Neighbors, and is playing a private eye in a new Audible Original. And now that he's filled up our televisions and audio queues, he's determined to head back to the big screen as well, in a new movie that will reunite him with writer/actor/director David Wain. It's a film so audacious as to be described as "off-the-rails," that producer Anthony Bregman claims the script made him laugh harder than the time he read Wet Hot American Summer (a film Wain co-wrote) for the first time.

In a new report from Variety, it was revealed that the film will star Zoey Deutch and co-writer Ken Marino (another longtime Wain collaborator). Sabrina Impacciatore (of The White Lotus Season 2 fame), Ben Wang, and Miles Gutierrez-Riley are also in the ensemble.

Running from 2007 to 2015, the AMC period drama series starred Hamm as Don Draper, the charismatic creative director of an advertising firm. The role is widely considered the actor's breakout role, responsible for making him a household name.

Now, Hamm and John Slattery, who played Roger Sterling on Mad Men, will reunite in a new R-rated comedy that takes place in the entertainment industry. David Wain, who is best known for directing Wet Hot American Summer, will helm the project, currently under the placeholder title Untitled David Wain Celebrity Pass Movie. Hamm and Slattery are joined by Zoey Deutch, Sabrina Impacciatore, Ben Wang, Miles Gutierrez-Riley, and Ken Marino. The movie's logline reads:

Steph Curry’s Big Acting Splash Didn’t Get Enough Playing Time
Image
Steph Curry isn’t used to missing — though he was never much one for twos.

Peacock has canceled mockumentary Mr. Throwback, NBA superstar Curry’s acting debut (Ok, so he played himself on HBO’s Ballers once) and the first scripted, live-action series produced by his Unanimous Media banner, after just one season. The cancellation is due to a lack of viewership, The Hollywood Reporter is told, not quality.

Mr. Throwback debuted to a pretty strong reception (although THR‘s review contended it “Never quite lives up to Curry’s charm or pedigree.”). The six-episode season one has an 86 percent rating among TV critics on Rotten Tomatoes and is at 80 percent with the audience. (Among “Top Critics,” it’s at 67 percent, lower but still “Fresh,” though that only accounts for six reviews — a relatively small sample size.)

The series was not without its flaws, but it was funny (enough) and...

‘Based on a True Story,’ ‘Mr. Throwback’ Canceled at Peacock (Exclusive)
Image
The comedies “Based on a True Story” and “Mr. Throwback” have been canceled at Peacock, Variety has learned exclusively. “Based on a True Story” had debuted its second season in November 2024, while “Mr. Throwback” aired its one and only season at the NBCUniversal streamer in August 2024.

Peacock does not release regular viewership information, so gauging the exact audience of either show is difficult, but both received solid reviews upon their release.

“Based on a True” story starred Kaley Cuoco and Chris Messina as a financially struggling couple who decide to start a true crime podcast to investigate whether or not their plumber is in fact a serial killer. The cast also included Tom Bateman, Liana Liberato, and Priscilla Quintana. The show originally premiered in 2023.

Craig Rosenberg created the series and served as an executive producer. Annie Weisman served as writer, showrunner, and an executive producer on Season 2 with Jaclyn Moore also writing and executive producing.

Adult Swim's Medical Show Is A Hilarious Palate Cleanser For The Pitt Fans
Image
While the movie business has experienced a concerning degree of commercial and critical turbulence over the first three months of 2025, television has stepped up to provide entertainment seekers an impressive array of captivating new series, as well as stellar new seasons from returning shows. "Severance" just stuck the landing at the end of its celebrated second season, "The White Lotus" is back doing its darkly comedic thing with possibly its strongest cast to date, and "The Studio" is a brilliantly brutal Hollywood satire that takes no prisoners in showing viewers how the showbiz sausage is made.

Hence, it's a very high compliment to suggest that the new Max hospital drama, "The Pitt," might be the best of the '25 bunch thus far. Created by R. Scott Gemmill, a TV writing veteran who got his start on "ER" before taking the showrunning reins on "NCIS: Los Angeles," the show is a...

Why Amy Poehler's SNL Audition Was Unlike Any Other
Image
"Saturday Night Live" is now in its 50th year of existence, which means the sketch comedy show will spend much of 2025 warmly celebrating its own broadcast legacy. Some of this is earned. Producer Lorne Michaels was in the right place at the right time to pull together an epochal collection of comedic talent in 1975, and it's astonishing to consider that the show has remained relevant through 10 U.S. presidencies and god knows how many shifts in the popular culture. Though many people still watch the show live, viewers who've other plans on Saturday night can wait until Sunday to read episode recaps at any number of websites (none better than Ethan Anderton's at /Film) and/or watch individual skits on YouTube. "SNL" isn't going anywhere — though, as a fan who's lived through its lowest lows (seasons 6 and 11 in particular), I feel like it's never been more mechanical than it is now.

Adam Scott Replaced Bradley Cooper in This Absurd Netflix Comedy Series
Image
David Wain’s 2001 film Wet Hot American Summer is a cult classic that is especially cherished because of the relationship between McKinley (Michael Ian Black) and Ben (Bradley Cooper). Although their relationship is a small part of the ensemble film, it was important to many viewers because of the genuine intimacy between the characters, a quality that is still rare in comedy films today. By the time Wain and screenwriter Michael Showalter created the follow-up shows Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp and Wet Hot American Summer: Ten Years Later for Netflix, they faced a dilemma: Ben was an important character for the franchise's most passionate fans. But, Cooper had recently received an Academy Award nomination for Silver Linings Playbook, in addition to joining the MCU as Rocket Raccoon. He was a certified A-lister with a very busy schedule.

Quick Links What is They Came Together About? They Came Together Has Countless Cameos Fans Were Wrong About They Came Together

With Saturday Night Live's 50th season well underway, many fans are revisiting movies, TV shows, and digital content made by SNL cast members and alums. There are, of course, the films personally produced by Lorne Michaels and SNL, such as The Blues Brothers, Wayne's World, and most recently, 2010's MacGruber, but the impact of SNL alumni extends far beyond this shortlist. NBC's longest-running sketch comedy show has produced some bonafide stars that have a stranglehold on the industry. The talent ranges from Will Ferrell to Adam Sandler to Eddie Murphy all the way to the oft-forgotten Academy Award-winning Robert Downey Jr., but the less famous cast members often still go on to have amazing careers. Whether they go on to star in sitcoms, Broadway shows, or films,...

10 Best Ken Marino Movies & TV Shows, Ranked
Image
Ken Marino's career as an actor, writer, and director has been largely defined by two things: comedy and collaboration. After establishing himself via the MTV sketch comedy series "The State" with the comedy troupe of the same name (comprised of his closest friends and creative confidants), he went on to work on some of the funniest, most brilliant, and underrated TV and film projects to come out of Hollywood in the last two decades.

Much of his work is the result either of his own creative will or that of his former troupe-mates, the group having spread through the industry to wreak hilarious havoc. They often explore absurd angles on popular genres such as medical dramas and reality dating shows. At the same time, he's a familiar face on a smorgasbord of network sitcoms, as well as a few audacious dramedies you'll certainly want to add to your watch list.

A month after NBC broadcast live Steph Curry’s heroics during the Men’s Basketball Olympics final that helped USA clinch the title, the Golden State Warriors star will be back on the network. NBC will air the first episode of the Peacock original comedy series Mr. Throwback, starring Curry and Adam Pally, on Sept. 12. The move is designed to give additional exposure to Mr. Throwback, which premiered Aug. 8 on Peacock alongside the streamer’s Olympics coverage that included Curry & Co.’s quest for Olympic gold.

The half-hour, co-created/executive produced by David Caspe, ranks as a top 5 Peacock original comedy series launch based on its opening weekend viewing out of 19 comedy shows the NBCU streamer has introduced so far. Not surprisingly, 77% of the accounts who watched Mr. Throwback also watched basketball at the Olympics.

Pally, a dedicated member of his own rec league basketball team, and Caspe, an “enormous basketball fan and even bigger Stephen Curry fan,” could not believe that the four-time NBA champion wanted to work on a show with them.

“I would not be shocked if we just got a phone call Thursday morning when the show’s supposed to premiere. That’s like, ‘Yeah, Stephen decided not to do it,’” Caspe told TheWrap. “I’d be like, ‘That makes sense. God bless him.’”

The idea for the duo’s mockumentary series “Mr. Throwback” came after an appearance on Ayesha Curry’s HBO Max game show, “About Last Night.”

Caspe and Pally appeared on separate episodes with their wives — “Happy Endings” and “Marry Me...

How Stephen Curry Got a Sitcom: Adam Pally and Ego Nwodim Talk ‘Mr. Throwback,’ Peacock’s Mockumentary Series About Defrauding an NBA Star
Image
“The only premise I could ever really give to people for this show is it’s like if Christopher Guest directed ‘Uncut Gems,’” Adam Pally says, previewing his new series “Mr. Throwback.” The mockumentary show does have a similar shape to Josh and Benny Safdie’s modern crime classic: a so-sad, so-fucked-up Jewish businessman takes on life-threatening mob debts and, in a shameless act of survivalist drive, dogs an NBA star and extracts money from him through a bombardment of white lies.

Only in “Mr. Throwback,” Pally’s character, Danny Grossman, is a former basketball prodigy, the “Jewish Jordan” that once went “100 and 100”. Stephen Curry was his back-up in middle school. But Danny’s career ended early after his alcoholic father and coach (Tracy Letts) is caught in an elaborate lie. Two decades and a failed marriage later, an in-debt Danny is forced to follow in his old man’s footsteps,...

Five Great Comedies Starring NBA Players
Image
The trailer just dropped for Mr. Throwback, a new mockumentary series starring Happy Endings’ Adam Pally, Saturday Night Live’s Ego Nwodim and… The Golden State Warriors’ Steph Curry?

Produced by David Wain, Mr. Throwback actually looks pretty funny for a show starring an NBA point guard in a prominent role. Come to think of it, there have been more than a few solid comedies featuring pro basketball players, such as…

5 Marques Johnson in ‘White Men Can’t Jump’

When we think of White Men Can’t Jump, we tend to think of Wesley Snipes, Woody Harrelson, and of course, Jeopardy! champion Rosie Perez.

But it also features former NBA player Marques Johnson as Raymond, an aggrieved victim of Billy and Syd’s hustle. Johnson later revealed that the character was based on real-life basketball player Reggie Harding, who died tragically in 1972.

4 Michael Jordan in ‘Space Jam’

Space Jam is a ridiculous movie,...

Ego Nwodim Joins Adam Pally & Stephen Curry In Peacock Comedy Series ‘Mr. Throwback’
Image
Exclusive: Saturday Night Live star Ego Nwodim has been tapped as the female lead opposite Adam Pally and Stephen Curry in the single-camera Peacock comedy series Mr. Throwback. Her casting is not expected to impact her duties on the NBC sketch comedy series, which is in the same corporate family.

The Mr. Throwback mocumentary, from Happy Endings creator David Caspe and writing duo Matthew Libman and Daniel Libman, centers on Danny (Happy Endings alum Pally), a down-on-his-luck memorabilia dealer who looks for redemption by reuniting with his sixth-grade teammate, NBA great Steph Curry.

Rotterdam Review: Restlessly Inventive, Dream Team Pushes Cinema Toward New, Surreal Paths
Image
A few weeks ago, as The Sweet East started gracing theatres across the States, Reverse Shot ran a sprawling conversation between critic K. Austin Collins and critic-turned-screenwriter Nick Pinkerton. It’s a delightful exchange I can’t recommend enough, both for all it has to uncover about Sean Price Williams’ film––which Pinkerton wrote and which, in my book, was one of last year’s finest––but also for what it sponges of our depressingly shortsighted, quid-pro-quo relationship with the films we watch, what we expect to receive in return for the time we invest in them. “If I wanted to say something,” Pinkerton reflects on the okay-but-what’s-the-message response Sweet East routinely encountered in the months since its Cannes premiere, “I would open my mouth and the words would come out. That’s not what one makes a movie for. You make a movie to go beyond the expression of simple concepts.

10 Netflix Shows We Suspect Have Been Ghost Canceled
Image
Picture: Netflix / 20th Television

A New Year is just around the corner, and Netflix’s upcoming roster of Original titles includes over 100 returning shows that will be back for new seasons. Some Netflix shows remain unclear on whether they’ll ever return, and in the case of the below, we suspect they’ve all been quietly canceled.

For these shows, we refer to them as ghost canceled. This means they’ve been effectively canceled behind the scenes but haven’t been publicly announced. These announcements are either because Netflix won’t confirm or nobody behind the show publicly announced the cancelation.

As always, cancelations are due to a number of reasons. With a few of these, it’ll be purely down to the length of time since the last season premiered, and then you’ve got the usual issues of performance.

You can find our expanded full list of shows...

The State Break Down Their ‘Ball-Dipping’ Reunion Tour: ‘There’s a Gen X Nostalgia Wave’

Over the past three decades, sketch comedy group The State has created an MTV series, a comedy album, a book, and a CBS special in addition to several spinoff projects like Reno 911!, Viva Variety, Stella, Wet Hot American Summer, Risk!, and Children’s Hospital. But the logistics of bringing the large troupe back together for a tour were always too daunting to even consider until just a few months ago when the SAG strike cleared off their calendars for the foreseeable future.

Joel McHale Responds to Chevy Chase's Community Comments: "That's Chevy Being Chevy"
Image
Chevy Chase's dissatisfaction with his time on the show "Community" has resurfaced, with recent comments about feeling constrained and the show not being funny enough for him. Joel McHale, who worked with Chase on the show, responded by saying that Chase could have left if he really wanted to. Despite their tense history, McHale later portrayed Chase in a biographical comedy-drama, showcasing his admiration for Chase's early work and confidence as a comedian.

There's no love lost between former Community colleagues Joel McHale and Chevy Chase. Chase co-starred in the series for four seasons until his departure following problematic on-set behavior. For years, fans of the series have known about Chase's dissatisfaction with the series, but recent comments have put his feelings back in the limelight. McHale, who starred as Jeff Winger for the show's entire six seasons run, has previously spoken about working with Chase, and recently reacted to those comments,...
