Mary Fickett dies at 83 and Steven Tyler loses his dad at 95
HollywoodNews.com: Just a few notes from all over: the lovely Mary Fickett, the wonderful veteran actress who played Ruth Martin on “All My Children,” died this week at age 83. She’d been with the show since day 1, in 1970, until Alzheimer’s forced her to retire about ten years ago. She won the first daytime Emmy award. As Ruth Martin, she was a stand in for the show’s creator, Agnes Nixon. Ruth was the conscience of the show, especially when her son went to fight in Vietnam. Ironically, “All My Children” ends its run next Friday after 41 years. Last year, a similar thing happened with Helen Wagner, the matriarch of “As the World Turns,” died right before that show concluded after 54 years. She was 93. I remember Ruth Martin from when I was in high school; Fickett was direct and never wavering in her delivery. She’s been missed the last few years…...

Helen Mirren speaks up about Hollywood sexism
Dame Helen Mirren won a career achievement award at the Power 100 Women in Entertainment Breakfast this week, and she took the opportunity at the podium to voice her feelings about the entertainment industry and what she feels is still a heavy bias toward male-oriented filmmaking.

Mirren claims that there are too many movies aimed at young men and their sexual desires, and that Hollywood focuses too much on women for their physical attractiveness. She went on to mention that in her extensive experience, a lot of mediocre male actors have been spared at the expense of female ones who may have had more actual acting talent, but couldn’t sustain careers because they didn’t make the cut in terms of sex appeal.

Mixing Comedy & Soap: A History of the Serialized Situation Comedy
Mixing Comedy & Soap: A History of the Serialized Situation Comedy

By Doug Prinzivalli

As one of the producers of the hit web series Pretty - a parody hybrid of reality TV and soaps - I thought it would be a fun idea to take a brief look at the long history of the serialized situation comedy. The idea of mixing comedy with soap elements is not a new one - in fact it started over 60 years ago.

The First Hundred Years (CBS 1950-52) was a mildly humorous daily soap about newlyweds who are gifted with a bat-infested Victorian mansion. Sounds pretty wacky to me. After less than two years, it was replaced by something called The Guiding Light.

The Egg & I (CBS 1951-52) Based on a book by Betty MacDonald and the 1947 film (starring Claudette Colbert and Fred MacMurray) that followed, this show followed the misadventures of city folk...

Randy Quaid turns into a real-life Cousin Eddie
Actor Randy Quaid and his wife Evi were arrested in Montecito, California after they allegedly broke into their old house and were continuing to live there despite having sold the property in 2007. The new owner discovered the couple living in his guest house and called the police, who arrested the Quaids and removed them from the premises. After the arrest it was discovered that there had been some significant damage to the contents of the guest house, and allegedly the Quaids had also vandalized the property repeatedly. It’s kind of sad to hear of a once-successful actor sinking to these depths, but for anyone who’s seen the Vacation movies the Cousin Eddie parallels are staggering.

Soap Round-Up: Nancy Dies on 'As the World Turns' ... and More
As the World Turns (1956)

Welcome to the Soap Round-Up, our weekly recap of all the soap action this past week. Each week, we sum up all the best stories from each and every soap, from 'All My Children' to 'The Young and the Restless.'

If you don't want to know what aired already, consider this a Spoiler Alert. ... Oh, one last thing, please comment and join the conversation.

For instance, did you watch 'As the World Turns' and how they handled Nancy Hughes' death? It was incredibly emotional, especially the classic clips from the 1950's and beyond. Helen Wagner was truly a soap legend. What did you think of how her death was portrayed on the soap?

As the World Turns Says Goodbye to Helen Wagner
As the World Turns will end its phenomenal 54-year run September 17 with lots of fan-pleasing closure — romances, reunions, weddings — but first the show must deal with the death last spring of actress Helen Wagner. Her salt-o-the-earth character, Nancy Hughes, famously uttered Atwt's very first line ("Good morning, dear") back on April 2, 1956 and exec producer Chris Goutman wanted her to repeat it at the end of the final episode for the ultimate in TV cool...

Spain vs Switzerland World Cup Upset!
It seemed like a foregone conclusion who would win in the Spain vs Switzerland World Cup match on Wednesday. Until a goal from Swiss player Gelson Gernandes landed in a net left empty by Spanish goalkeeper Iker Casillas.

Spain vs Switzerland World Cup (YouTube)

The goal from Gelson Gernandes in the 52nd minute of the game proved to be the only one scored during the entire Spain vs Switzerland match at the FIFA World Cup on Wednesday. As a result, Switzerland ended up with a shocking upset victory over Spain – the heavy favorite to win going into the match.

“To be fair, I’m not used to scoring goals, so I was a bit surprised,” Gelson Gernandes told reporters after the game. “It was a bit of luck.”

Spain held onto the ball during a majority 63 percent of the game and made 24 shots, but just could not get past the Swiss defenses.
