  • German by birth; was attending art college in Hamburg when the Beatles were playing in clubs along the Reeperbahn, and met them there.
  • Learned to play bass guitar, and followed the Beatles back to England, becoming first a member of Paddy, Klaus & Gibson, and then Manfred Mann. Later played bass on solo albums by longtime friends George Harrison and John Lennon, including Lennon's historic "Imagine".
  • Dated artist/photographer Astrid Kirchherr; lost her to Beatles then-bassist Stuart Sutcliffe, but they remained friends. Voormann helped Sutcliffe to resume his art studies in Hamburg, which he'd virtually given up to be in the group.
