Comments from the Annecy International Animation Film Festival saw The Simpsons co-creator Matt Groening explain why the long-awaited The Simpsons Movie 2 continues 18 years after the historic success of The Simpsons Movie. The Simpsons is the longest-running scripted primetime American TV show in history, and with 790 episodes in its back catalog, it is fair to say the series isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. Despite this, 2007’s The Simpsons Movie remains the show’s lone theatrical outing.
Speaking at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, co-creator Matt Groening explained to ScreenDaily why the sequel is taking so long. Asked about The Simpsons Movie 2, Groening said:
“The first movie killed us. We don’t have a ‘B team’; we did the movie and continued doing the series at the same time… We even had a countdown clock on the wall—we called it The Simpsons death clock—counting down the months, weeks,...

Next time someone tells you animation is for kids, consider offering “Fixed” as clear evidence to the contrary. Crude in both senses of the term — from its raunchy humor to the deliberately un-slick animation style — Genndy Tartakovsky’s R-rated feature is to “Lady and the Tramp” as “Shaving Ryan’s Privates” is to a respected Spielberg movie. Produced by Sony Pictures Animation and dropping on Netflix, where it should be right at home with the likes of “BoJack Horseman” and “Big Mouth,” the off-color comedy focuses on how a randy rescue mutt (Adam Devine as Bull) reacts to the news he’s about to be neutered.
Bull has balls (which are lovingly drawn beneath his asterisk-shaped keister), but not for long. That is, unless he can figure out some way to outwit his owners, who’ve done little to domesticate their beloved if misbehaved companion since the day they adopted him.

When The Simpsons first debuted back in 1989, it was obviously unlike any other series that had come before it. But it still had its fair share of pop-culture influences. For one thing, the opening credit sequence was straight out of The Jetsons. And Matt Groening has said that much of the show was inspired by his love of classic sitcoms like Father Knows Best and Leave It to Beaver.
But the tone of The Simpsons can be traced back to two wildly different TV shows from the late ‘60s and early ‘70s.
The Ringer just shared the first chapter of the new book Stupid TV, Be More Funny: How the Golden Era of “The Simpsons” Changed Television — and America — Forever by Alan Siegel. In it, writer Jon Vitti, who penned classic episodes such as “Cape Feare” and “Radio Bart” revealed that “the basic hybrid that creates The Simpsons is...

Bart Simpson’s mortal enemy Sideshow Bob has attempted a number of nefarious schemes over the years — from committing armed robbery in an effort to frame Krusty the Clown, to stealing a nuclear bomb from a military base, to running for public office on the Republican ticket.
But the most grisly Sideshow Bob-centric episode was arguably his second-ever appearance, in Season Three’s “Black Widower.” That’s the one where Bob marries Aunt Selma, then attempts to murder her using a deadly combination of natural gas and MacGyver.
While the episode was written by Jon Vitti, the story was credited to Simpsons co-developer Sam Simon and Thomas Chastain. The second name may not sound familiar to fans, considering that he was only ever credited for this one episode.
Chastain was a successful mystery writer, and the author of Who Killed the Robins Family?, a novel that tasked readers with solving...

Netflix will debut a world exclusive first-look at “Stranger Things: Tales From ’85” at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in June.
The new animated series – set in the “Stranger Things” universe – will be presented by executive producer Eric Robles during the “Next on Netflix Animation” showcase on June 11.
“Your Saturday morning cartoons are getting turned upside down,” teased the organizers.
It won’t be the only title getting the spotlight, however, with director Alex Woo, production designer Steven Pilcher and VFX supervisor Nicola Lavender presenting never-before-seen footage from upcoming film “In Your Dreams,” handled by Kuku Studios.

Netflix has shared a first look at Genndy Tartakovsky’s new adult animated comedy film, Fixed. The film will be available to stream on August 13, 2025.
Fixed is an adult animated comedy about Bull, an average, all-around good dog who discovers he’s going to be neutered in the morning!
As the gravity of this life-altering event sets in, Bull realizes he needs one last adventure with his pack of best friends, as these are the last 24 hours with his balls! What could go wrong…?
The voice cast includes Adam Devine, Idris Elba, Kathryn Hahn, Fred Armisen, Bobby Moynihan, Beck Bennett, Michelle Buteau, and River Gallo.
Genndy Tartakovsky, the creator and director behind Samurai Jack, Dexter’s Laboratory, Primal, and Unicorn: Warriors Eternal, told the Netflix blog Tudum, “I have been friends with the same group of four guys since high school. These guys make me laugh like nothing else, so I was thinking,...

Genndy Tartakovsky is one of Cartoon Network’s premiere contributors, with hits like Dexter’s Laboratory, Samurai Jack, Star Wars: Clone Wars, and Primal to his name. Tartakovsky is also one of the driving forces behind the Hotel Transylvania film series, which has done well for Sony with four films of varying success in the franchise. It was reported months ago that Tartakovsky’s newest mature audience fare, Fixed, fell victim to David Zaslav’s project jettison practice at Warner Bros. in order to save money at the studio. Sony regained the rights and Netflix has now picked it up to stream on August 13.
The official synopsis reads,

Netflix has come to the rescue of Genndy Tartakovsky’s 2D adult-animated “Fixed,” which was dropped by New Line in 2023 via Warner Bros. Discovery in a cost-cutting measure similar to the “Coyote vs Acme” hybrid and “The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie,” which were picked up by Ketchup Entertainment. The R-rated co-production with Sony Pictures Animation was picked up by the streamer and will premiere on August 13.
“Fixed,” from a story by Tartakovsky, Steve Greenberg, Rich Lufrano, and Jon Vitti, follows Bull (Adam Devine), an average blue bloodhound who discovers that he’s going to be neutered in the morning. As the gravity of this life-altering event sets in, Bull realizes he needs one last adventure with his pack of best friends as these are the last 24 hours with his balls. Here’s a fun trivia question: Which popular category of unconventional Simpsons episodes nearly had constant iterations multiple times per season? If you said “clip shows,” you are wrong — they were never popular.
Nowadays, young TV comedy fans may have no idea that, back before the age of the internet, streaming and shrinking season orders, many sitcom showrunners had to pad out 20-plus episode seasons with what little budget they had on hand and an archive full of old footage. The lesser-loved but plenty-watched clip show was a staple of the sitcom genre for decades, as networks loved having the ability to fill time slots with pennies on the dollar, and fans, as much as they complained, still turned the channel to Fox whenever a new episode came on, clip show or not.
As such, Fox attempted to set the expectation for Matt Groening that the clip show would be a staple for The Simpsons,...

The Simpsons have welcomed a number of big name guest stars over the years — from Paul McCartney, to Meryl Streep, to ‘80s pop superstar [Redacted]. But the actor who drew the most interest and awe from The Simpsons staff was an aging TV star who was arguably at the lowest point of his entire career.
A highlight of Season Four’s “Mr. Plow” came when Homer and his family attend the Springfield car show, and encounter a wistful, vaguely embittered Adam West, who bemoans the current state of the Batman franchise before spontaneously breaking into the Batusi.
This memorable cameo only came about because Simpsons writer Jon Vitti decided that he would really like to hang out with Batman. “I wanted to do a winter episode,” Vitti told The Hollywood Reporter, “and then it occurred to me that if Homer bought a snow plow, we could have him go to the car show,...

Fixed is back on the prowl following Warner Bros. Discovery’s decision to drop the completed film.
The animated movie from director and co-writer Genndy Tartakovsky is no longer getting a release from Wbd, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. A co-production between Sony Pictures Animation and New Line, the feature was set up by the AT&T-owned WarnerMedia before the 2022 merger that led to David Zaslav running Wbd. Fixed was initially planned for release on the streaming service that was then known as HBO Max.
Wbd worked with Fixed’s team to cover production costs and enable the filmmakers to find an alternate buyer. Rights for Fixed have reverted to producer Sony, which is shopping the project.
Fixed features the voice talents of Adam DeVine, Idris Elba, Kathryn Hahn, Fred Armisen, Bobby Moynihan and Beck Bennett. The adult-focused animated film centers on Bull (DeVine), a bloodhound who decides to embrace...

This post contains spoilers for "Mr. Burns, A Post-Electric Play."
"The Simpsons" has a wide-ranging cultural influence, but how many episodes of the long-running series can say they inspired an entire postmodern play? At least one: "Cape Feare," the classic season 5 outing in which Sideshow Bob (Kelsey Grammer) stalks Bart and forces the Simpsons family into witness protection.
Originally well-received, the episode has only grown in public estimation in the years since it aired, landing on many lists of the show's best episodes and earning an undeniable place in the hallowed halls of pop culture history. It's only fitting, then, that when playwright Anne Washburn decided to dream up a story about a post-apocalyptic world in which entertainment junkies clung to fragments of their favorite TV shows, putting them on as plays that would ultimately shape the mythology of the new world, "Cape Feare" took center stage. Washburn's thought-provoking postmodern play,...

Genndy Tartakovsky, behind “Hotel Transylvania” and “Star Wars: Clone Wars,” has revealed the voice cast – led by Adam Devine, Idris Elba, Kathryn Hahn – and a first-look image for his upcoming R-rated animation, “Fixed.”

The ‘90s were the decade of The Simpsons, sorry Seinfeld. The family was introduced in 1987 through a series of short clips in between skits on Fox’s The Tracey Ullman Show, overstayed their welcome and were spun off. The series debuted on Dec. 17, 1989 with a holiday special, “Simpsons Roasting on An Open Fire,” before hopping on the rotisserie of regular rotation on Jan. 14, 1990 with “Bart the Genius,” directed by David Silverman, and written by Jon Vitti.
The half-hour animated series was created by Matt Groening, who came up with it as a last-second pitch to foil his own plan to animate his comic strip Life in Hell. The Simpsons was produced by TV legend James L. Brooks, who drove The Mary Tyler Moore Show and Taxi, and Sam Simon, who wrote for Taxi and Cheers.

Looking to revisit a few classic “Simpsons” episodes while quarantined? We’ve got you covered, but this isn’t going to be another “Best of ‘The Simpsons'” list.
Those have been done countless times already, and inevitably you’re going to be recommended the same episodes: “Homer’s Enemy,” “Lisa the Vegetarian,” “Homer at the Bat” and “Marge vs. the Monorail” will most likely be in there — and they should. They’re great episodes.
We’re not going to do that here, though. Instead, I reached out to former “Simpsons” writer and showrunner Bill Oakley to help pick a few hidden gems from the show’s ’90s heyday. These are the episodes that don’t get the shine they deserve, but nevertheless should be priority viewing while you’re stuck at home due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Sure sounds like there is going to be The Simpsons Movie 2. Some day. As we all know good and well by this point in time, Disney recently snatched up the rights to all of 20th Century Fox's properties, including The Simpsons. And today we have word out of Comic-Con that The Simpsons creator Matt Groening feels there will no doubt be a sequel to 2007's The Simpsons Movie one of these days.
Why? Well, because Disney wants something for its money, of course. Specifically, Matt Groening revealed this speaking from Sdcc this weekend.

Earlier this summer, one of the biggest mobile games of all time made the leap from the smartphone to the big screen when The Angry Birds Movie hit theaters. The animated adventure proved to be a box office hit, taking in $107.4 million domestically and $346.9 million worldwide, from a $73 million budget. Today we have word that the sequel Angry Birds 2 is already in the works.
The sequel talk isn't terribly surprising, given its box office performance and the fact that the movie is based on an already-successful property. Rovio, the company that developed and publishes the mobile game, held an earnings conference call yesterday, where CEO Kati Levoranta confirmed that a new Angry Birds movie is in the works. Here's what she had to say below.

Here's what she had to say below.
"With the excellent performance of our games portfolio and the fantastic movie, the Angry Birds brand is flying high and we are seeing positive Ebit and cash flow development,...

So much for the three-peat.
"Captain America: Civil War" could have come out on top for the third straight weekend. It could even have lost 45 percent of last weekend's business (when it earned $72.6 million) and still outdistanced this weekend's three new wide releases. Even after three weeks, you might still have expected the Marvel mega-movie to outdistance three seemingly-undistinguished newcomers: a period action comedy starring no-longer-a-box-office-draw Russell Crowe and never-really-a-box-office-draw Ryan Gosling; a Seth Rogen comedy sequel, and a cartoon based on an app that everyone thought was really cool six years ago.
Nonetheless, "The Angry Birds Movie" knocked down "Captain America," along with "The Nice Guys" (pictured) and "Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising," as easily as a short stack of pigs. The cartoon earned an estimated $39.0 million, about $1 million more than distributor Sony had predicted. "Civil War" had to settle for second, with an estimated $33.1 million (down 54 percent from a...

Angry Birds is a film experience of monumental proportions—if gauged by the excited kids in the theater. Basically, the story centers around an angry red bird living amidst a colorful array of other flightless birds on a small island somewhere in the world. The birds are all colorfully plumed and seem to be awfully well adjusted. Some might say, too well adjusted for their own good. I’m not exactly sure why the birds are unable to fly, but that must have been a major element of the original game that this film grew from.
Red bird is Angry. He’s hot under the feathers! Like many of us non-cartoon humans—at least I like to think I’m not a cartoon! –Red bird has seriously intense anger issues, and near the start of his amusing film, he finds himself in a class with other malcontents.

Credit should be given to Sony Pictures, Rovio Entertainment, and Jon Vitti (Writer) for taking a game about flinging birds across our phones and making something worthwhile. That’s not to say the movie is perfect, but video game adaptations can be particularly brutal when the game is simple. Super Mario Bros., the one with Dennis Hopper, is a great example of trying to take something beloved and not having enough plot to work with. Perhaps they did, and someone broke into the studio and swapped the script with utter garbage. Sonic the Hedgehog has never had a feature film, perhaps he is responsible. Anyway,...

The world of Angry Birds has never demanded much intellectual stimulation. Rovio’s smartphone game is merely a brainless time-waster, where you shoot cartoon birds out of a slingshot in hopes of defeating egg-hungry piggies. Fling your flightless heroes, and destroy everything in your path. There’s no explanation needed. So when news of The Angry Birds Movie came to be, concerns of plot thickness immediately were raised. Could writer Jon Vitti craft a story weighty enough to sling wholesome family entertainment for an hour-and-a-half? Well, it’s a yes and no answer – with a much more pronounced “No.”
On a remote tropical island, there lives a community of flightless birds who are as happy as can be – well, everyone expect for Red (Jason Sudeikis). While all the other birds joyously go about their days, Red struggles with a temper problem that turned him into a social outcast. As per a judge’s ruling,...

What the heck is this? Some sort of meninist political statement attempting to vindicate male anger? In a kids’ movie? Maybe men shouldn’t make movies… I’m “biast” (pro): nothing
I’m “biast” (con): movies based on games fill me with dread
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Movies are so dominated by women that you’d be forgiven for presuming that a new one entitled Angry Birds is likely yet another broad grossout slapstick comedy about a gang of cranky, foulmouthed gals getting into trouble and embarrassing themselves with malicious glee. (I know that I, for one, am tired of this subgenre, in which there seems to be a new entry every other week.) Sure, this movie is based on a popular mobile-app game, but the game is pure nonsense: it doesn’t have anything approaching an actual story or genuine characters. It’s a template,...

In the 3D animated comedy, The Angry Birds Movie, we’ll finally find out why the birds are so angry.
The movie takes us to an island populated entirely by happy, flightless birds – or almost entirely. In this paradise, Red (Jason Sudeikis, We’re the Millers, Horrible Bosses), a bird with a temper problem, speedy Chuck (Josh Gad in his first animated role since Frozen), and the volatile Bomb (Danny McBride, This is the End, Eastbound and Down) have always been outsiders. But when the island is visited by mysterious green piggies, it’s up to these unlikely outcasts to figure out what the pigs are up to.
Featuring a hilarious, all-star voice cast that includes Maya Rudolph (Bridesmaids, Sisters), Bill Hader (Trainwreck, Inside Out), and Peter Dinklage (“Game of Thrones”), as well as Kate McKinnon (“Saturday Night Live,” Ghostbusters), Sean Penn (Milk, Mystic River), Tony Hale (Veep, Arrested Development...

The latest trailer for The Angry Birds Movie doesn't contain very much new footage, so my opinion of it hasn't changed very much since the last trailer finally made me understand why the film exists. The biggest revelation for me was in the credits at the very end: I knew that Jason Sudeikis, Bill Hader, Maya Rudolph, and Patton Oswalt were in the film, but Sean Penn? I had no clue he was in this! I must have completely missed that announcement. (So did his IMDb page, apparently.)
The Angry Birds Movie hits theaters on May 20th.

Angry Birds, the 3D animated film based off the popular app game, will finally hit theaters in May. In the final trailer, the feathery creatures are up against the "mysterious and weird" Green Pigs who show up to their home and steal the birds' eggs.
Jason Sudeikis stars as Red, a bird constantly filled with anger who recognizes immediately how sketchy the pigs — voiced by Bill Hader, Blake Shelton and Tony Hale — seem to be. Red decides to lead his fellow birds into embracing their inner rage and fight back.

There are some movies that you just know will be downright terrible, no matter how much belief you put into them: there’s no point giving flicks The Ridiculous Six or Fifty Shades (Of Grey or Black, it doesn’t matter) a chance because even the people who made them haven’t put in the effort.
But sometimes we criticise movies too harshly without really stopping to consider whether we have enough evidence to know that they’re going to suck. Check out the YouTube comments section for the trailers for a bunch of upcoming movies and you’ll discover it’s essentially hell on Earth – angry people being angry about movies they haven’t seen. Movies that, generally speaking, don’t even look that bad – we’re all just bandwagoning.
Folk are already hating on the following 10 films, for example, but do they actually look as bad as everyone is making out?...

It might have surprised you that Angry Birds managed a movie, or it might not have surprised you at all, but the crew assembled for this curious, based-on-an-app-game effort is a little surprising, even for those too jaded to bat an eye at this money grab.
It’s a cast that would make you think you’re in for something amazing, but the trailer doesn’t exactly flesh out what it is that makes these birds so angry, except that Red (Jason Sudeikis) seems to have stumbled out of Inside Out.
It’s bound to make a ton of money (and have virtually nothing to do with the game), but the general irritation at film adaptations just for the sake of raking in dough could win out if this one doesn’t give us a lot more info in a hurry.
Check it out, and let us know what you think.

Bird Island is headed to the big screen, and as promised, Rovio and Sony Pictures have showcased the first footage for its high-profile Angry Birds film, seeding an origin story between the nefarious pigs and the titular avians.
Introducing the various breeds of short-tempered birds, the trailer is but a tease of what to expect from the 2016 animation, as directors Fergal Reilly and Clay Kaytis look to lend some personality to those colorful sprites that have soared across a billion mobile screens over the past few years. Penned by Jon Vitti, Sony’s CG animation is facing an uphill battle to win over its doubters, and today’s vertical slice is a breezy and vibrant hint of Reilly and Kaytis budding newcomer to the competitive animation scene.

The Angry Birds movie is still very much a reality - and now there's a trailer to prove it.
The mobile game's Finnish developers Rovio and Sony have teamed up for the 3D animated movie, which features an all-star cast including Jason Sudeikis as Red, Josh Gad as Chuck, Danny McBride as Bomb and Maya Rudolph as Matilda.
Game of Thrones' Peter Dinklage will also be catapulting into the voice cast as the majestically-named character 'The Mighty Eagle'.
Bill Hader will play Leonard, a pig spokesman who must stand up for the oinkers after they attempt to infiltrate the birds' nests.
Jon Vitti, the man responsible for classic Simpsons episodes 'Mr Plow' and 'Cape Feare', is writing the Angry Birds script. More worryingly, he's also behind Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel.

You'd forgotten that Sony and Finnish gaming developers Roxio were making an animated Angry Birds movie, but that's all changed thanks to these new images.
Debuting on Entertainment Weekly, these snaps show both camps in a state of distress: the pigs with TNT and the birds with some sort of mysterious seaborne arrival.
Capitalising on the ubiquity of the irritable fowl, the producers behind the project have been wrestling with how to make a catapulting game involving exploding birds and lime green pigs actually emotionally engaging.
Helping them with their quest are the voice cast, which includes such talent as Jason Sudeikis as Red, Josh Gad as Chuck, Danny McBride as Bomb and Maya Rudolph as Matilda.
Wonderfully, Games of Thrones' very own Peter Dinklage is voicing "The Mighty Eagle" - not pictured - which will hopefully be more successful than his unfortunate work on video game Destiny.

Sam Simon, a nine-time Emmy winner and one of the co-creators of "The Simpsons," died on Sunday (March 8) after a long battle with colorectal cancer. He was 59. A writer and later showrunner on "Taxi," Simon also produced and wrote for "Cheers." Simon was part of the original team that helped develop "The Simpsons" into a regular-length series after it began its run as shorts on "The Tracey Ullman Show." Credited as series co-creator with Matt Groening and James L. Brooks, Simon assembled the original team of "Simpsons" writers, a murderers' row that included legendary show scribes including John Swartzwelder, Jon Vitti, Al Jean, Mike Reiss, Jay Kogen and Wallace Wolodarsky. Simon, and the staff he brought together, has been given much of the credit for helping craft the sensibility of the series, as well as the ever-expanding universe of Springfield. Simon left the show in 1993 and had a wildly eclectic...

Sam Simon, a comedy writer and producer who co-developed groundbreaking animated sitcom "The Simpsons," has died after a long battle with colon cancer. He was 59.
Among his many career highlights, Simon "served as the showrunner on the sitcom 'Taxi' at the age of 23; wrote for and produced the comedies 'Cheers' and 'The Drew Carey Show'; and created a Fox series for the legendary stand-up comic George Carlin in the mid-1990s," according to The Hollywood Reporter. He most recently worked as a consultant on Charlie Sheen series "Anger Management."
But Simon was best-known for helping shepherd the creation of "The Simpsons," alongside Matt Groening and James L. Brooks. The trio worked together on "The Tracey Ullman Show," on which Bart and co. first got their start, later giving the Simpsons family its own Fox series in 1989.
"The Simpsons" is now the longest-running primetime series in television history.

The first proper episode of The Simpsons elegantly and simply skewered everything.
The Simpsons is celebrating yet another birthday. The first non-Christmas episode of The Simpsons, “Bart the Genius,” first premiered on Fox on January 14, 1990. The series had already run their Christmas special, "Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire" but this was their first non-holiday themed episode, and the show jumps right into their skewered reality and social commentary. The chalkboard gag has Bart endlessly writing “I will not waste chalk” as punishment, probably, for something equally ironic. The kid’s got real anger in those fingers and he gives the most evil of knowing grins, for just a split second, before he tears out of the classroom.
The TV sitcom family was undergoing the kind of radical change it hadn’t encountered since the force of Norman Lear. Roseanne Barr was breaking very different ground on her show over at ABC.

And the impressive ensemble doesn't stop there: Keegan-Michael Key, Kate McKinnon, Tony Hale, Ike Barinholtz, Hannibal Buress, Cristela Alonzo, Jillian Bell, Danielle Brooks, Latin musician Romeo Santos, and YouTube stars Smosh (aka Ian Andrew Hecox and Anthony Padilla) will also voice characters in the movie.
Unsurprisingly, filmmakers were excited about the star-studded group that they nabbed for the flick.
"I'm extremely proud of this cast," said producer John Cohen in a statement. "Not only do we have Jason, Josh, Danny, Bill, Maya, and Peter bringing these characters to life, but they're surrounded by an...
