Sean Penn Circling Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s ‘Red Flag’
Late last year we got word that Sean Penn was looking to re-team with his 21 Grams director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, and bring Leonardo DiCaprio along with him, for The Revenant. But then just last week the director jumped to another project, based on Jennifer Vogel’s crime drama Flim-Flam Man: The True Story of My Father’s Counterfeit Life. And today we got word that DiCaprio will actually be collaborating with Martin Scorsese for his next project. So, where does this leave Sean Penn?

Vulture has the full story, which goes into all the details, but for the basic gist, DiCaprio was passionate about The Revenant, whereas Penn was more attracted to Flim-Fam Man (now being titled Red Flag). As financing geared up for the latter film, it gave DiCaprio a reason to exit for his Scorsese project and Penn could step in on this new Inarritu feature, where he...

Alejandro González Iñárritu Set to Direct True Crime Drama Based on the Book Flim-flam Man
Having earned his leading man Javier Bardem an Oscar nom with 2010’s Biutiful, Mexican helmer Alejandro González Iñárritu is set to tackle another morally ambiguous father figure with his next film, an as-yet untitled adaptation of Jennifer Vogel’s 2005 memoir "Flim-Flam Man: The True Story of My Father’s Counterfeit Life". The project, which will be backed by New Regency, already has a script from Fair Game scribe, Jez Butterworth. The book centers on the author’s father, John Vogel, a career criminal who dabbled in arson, robbery, conspiracy to commit murder, and fraud before being arrested in one of the largest counterfeit bill seizures in Us history in 1995. The meat of the account takes place after this arrest, when Vogel managed to escape custody, leading to a six-month manhunt and giving his daughter plenty of material for a kickass true crime book. Hit the jump for more, including a full synopsis.

Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu To Direct ‘Flim-Flam Man’ Adaptation
Mexican auteur Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu has enjoyed a nice rest since he delivered the bleak drama Biutiful at the Cannes Film Festival two years ago, the film that later earned two Oscar nominations for Best Foreign Language Film and Best Actor for lead Javier Bardem.

Last year there was talk of him setting up the period vengeance thriller The Revenant with Sean Penn and Leonardo DiCaprio but, as tends to happen with busy people, it never really got any momentum and talk of the film went cold.

Now Variety reports that he has put The Revenant aside for a little while and he is gearing up to direct a different project altogether, an adaptation of Jennifer Vogel’s memoirs “Flim-Flam Man: The True Story Of My Father’s Counterfeit Life,” that he has setup at 20th Century Fox subsidiary New Regency.

Adapted by Fair Game writer Jez Butterworth, the movie...

Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu To Direct Crime Drama Based On ‘Flim-Flam Man’
After his excellent debut Amores Perros, Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu has been a slight downward spiral with each new project. I’m not talking a M. Night Shyamalan-level descent, but each new film has found lesser levels of success with his Javier Bardem-starring Biutiful barely making an impact, even with two top Oscar nominations. Regardless, as a big fan of the director I look forward to anything he does next and tonight, we have an idea of what that may be.

Variety reports that Inarritu has climbed aboard a new drama based on Jennifer Vogel’s Flim-Flam Man: The True Story of My Father’s Counterfeit Life, with New Regency set to finance the film. Following the true story of Vogel’s father experiences in the criminal underworld, this film is set to shoot before his other planned film The Revenant, which has Sean Penn and Leonardo DiCaprio attached.

WGA Announces List of Nominees For Best Writing In Video Games
Assassin's Creed and Arkham City make the Writer's Guild of America's list of nominees for the best writing in games for 2011.

The WGA is in its fourth year of adding video games to its nominees for writing in media. And while this list might not have reflected my own choices for some of the best writing in games for the year (I'm disappointed in the omission of both Bastion and Portal 2, for instance and as much as I dug Arkham City, I don't think it was anywhere near a contender for best writing this year), the recognition for the industry is cool (if still limited).

Here's the full list of nominees and congrats to everyone who's on it:

Assassin’s Creed: Revelations, Story by Alexandre Amancio, Jean Guesdon, Corey May, Darby McDevitt; Multiplayer Story by Stéphane Blais, Richard Farrese, Jeffrey Yohalem; Lead Script Writer Darby McDevitt; Script Writers Richard Farrese,...
