‘The Ballad of Billy McCrae’ VOD Review
Image
Stars: Ian Virgo, Sianad Gregory, David Hayman, Ross O’Hennessy, Sophie Carmen-Jones, Gerald Tyler, Christopher Patrick Nolan, Carli De’La Hughes, Tim Duthrane | Written by Philip Palmer | Directed by Chris Crow

[Note: With the film finally getting a home entertainment release, here’s a reposting of our review of The Ballad of Billy McCrae from its UK cinema debut last September]

British gangster or small-town British revenge-style movies are a dime a dozen. There are so many of them around, I assume because they are cheap to make and there’s an abundance of actors who will happily star of them. Because of this, it takes something special to stand out from the crowd. Directors like Shane Meadows have taken this idea but elevated it to a whole new level, and that’s hard to do. The Ballad of Billy McCrae and its director doesn’t quite do that but there’s still plenty of interest here.

We are introduced to Chris Blythe. A man who has returned to his home town in Wales with his tail between his legs after losing his fortune in Canada.

The Ballad of Billy McCrae review – erotic noir is on rocky ground
David Hayman
This Wales-set tale of sex and intrigue among quarry workers is strangely murky, although the scenery looks lovely

This Wales-set thriller is called The Ballad of Billy McCrae for unaccountable reasons – it’s quite obvious throughout that the story isn’t about the title character at all. McCrae is played by David Hayman, a fine actor who seems to get cast whenever a Scottish hard man is needed, but he’s very much in a secondary role here. The anchoring protagonist is Chris Blythe (Ian Virgo), who has returned from Canada to his small Welsh home town somewhat in disgrace after he lost a fortune under murky circumstances. He gets a job working for McCrae, a swaggering terrier of a man who runs a quarry business and has a sexy daughter named Elen.

Before you can say The Postman Always Rings Twice, Blythe and Elen are humping all over her bungalow,...

‘Paintball Massacre’ DVD Review
Image
Stars: Katy Brand, Lee Latchford-Evans, Robert Portal, Nicholas Vince, Ian Virgo, Cheryl Burniston, Lockhart Ogilvie, Natasha Killip, Nathan Vlough, Joe Hallett | Written by Chris Regan | Directed by Darren Berry

Brit horror Paintball Massacre sees a bunch of old school friends go on a paintball trip miles away from civilization. Things go horribly wrong when they discover that not only are their old school “friends” playing the game but also a cold-blooded masked killer…

High school reunions in movies never go right do they? Be it comedy or horror, school reunions tend to feature people harbouring unforgiven betrayals, long-standing hatreds, and stir up emotions that many have buried deep, forgetting the traumas of school life until they come face to face with people long-since forgotten. Its even worse when one of the class mates has turned into a total psychopath and want to take hatred of their school “friends” to a whole new level.

Paintball Massacre Trailer Mixes Blood & Paint for One Deadly High School Reunion
Image
We have a brand new trailer for Paintball Massacre. Given the state of movie theaters right now, moviegoers are going to be left with precious few options throughout the rest of 2020. At least compared to any normal year. As such, we are going to largely be left with what is available to stream from the comfort of home. The folks at Uncork'd Entertainment are providing us with a rather unique option here, as we are getting a horror movie centered around a game of paintball. Per the studio, viewers need to "get ready for a deadly family reunion!"

The trailer kicks off with a group of former school friends getting together for a reunion, though there is some skepticism amongst them. They then decide to arrange for a game of paintball, of all things, with one member of their group particularly uninterested in the idea. But she goes along with it anyway.

Harvey Keitel & Malcolm McDowell in Malta Drama 'Just Noise' Trailer
Malcolm McDowell
"I saw what you did." Screen Daily has revealed an official promo trailer for an indie historic drama titled Just Noise, made in Malta about the tiny island nation's fight for independence (from Britain) after World War I. The film is directed by an Italian filmmaker named Davide Ferrario and doesn't have any release dates set yet - but this will create some anticipation. Just Noise (aka Storbju) chronicles how the citizens of Malta fought for independence from Britain in 1919. When the Army was sent to quell the riots and the British government covered up the bloody encounter, more than 100 Maltese were accused of instigating the violence and jailed. The full cast features Malcolm McDowell, Harvey Keitel, Tom Prior, Ian Virgo, Leeshon Alexander, Benedick Blythe, and Christopher Dingli. This looks intense! A gripping, brutal thriller about fighting for independence from evil, merciless imperialists. I'm in. Here's the first official promo...

‘Boots on the Ground’ DVD Review
Stars: Tom Ainsley, Ian Virgo, Ryan McParland, Valmike Rampersad, Sally Day | Written and Directed by Louis Melville

[Note: With the film finally getting a UK release, here's a reposting of our review of Boots on the Ground from way back in 2017 when it debuted at Frightfest]

On the last night of the Afghan War, five British soldiers must stay alive until midnight. After a fight with Taliban forces, they bunk down in the ruins of an old fort dating back to the first Afghan war. As the night wears on, they encounter a hellish labyrinthine with supernatural forces.

While most found-footage films are a slow burn that linger for the first 80 minutes before igniting into a blaze the last 10 minutes, Boots On The Ground throws us right into the action against hounding Taliban forces. Gone are the days when the audience was expected to slog through aimless exposition and minor scares that amounted to little more than a tease. It is almost as if director and...

‘Tau’ Review (Netflix Original)
Stars: Maika Monroe, Ed Skrein, Gary Oldman, Fiston Barek, Ivana Zivkovic, Sharon D. Clarke, Ian Virgo, Paul Leonard Murray, Dragoljub Ljubicic, Irene Chiengue Chiendjo | Written by Noga Landau | Directed by Federico D’Alessandro

Federico D’Alessandro’s Tau is unequivocally horrific. It is utter torture to have to sit through and antagonising to even comprehend any positives within the ninety-six minute running time and even within its relatively short length, bizarrely still manages to stretch the tiresome concept of what’s a relatively bold premise of the exploration of self-aware A.I. done masterfully by Kubrick and Garland before it.

Speaking of concept, we have Julia played by Maika Monroe, trapped and tortured for scientific study by the mysterious Alex, and somewhere in the mix is A.I./slave/homemaker/therapist Tau, voiced by Gary Oldman. The character development is obsolete with what seems to be a completely unrelated opening...

‘The Lighthouse’ Review
Stars: Michael Jibson, Mark Lewis Jones, Ian Virgo, Stephen McDade, Joshua Richards, Charles Curran, Jason May, Nathan Sussex, David Lloyd, David Shillitoe | Written by Paul Bryant, Chris Crow, Michael Jibson | Directed by Chris Crow

Horror tends to disturb us much more when it taps into our own personal demons… The Lighthouse is a film based on a true story, the Smalls Island Incident of 1801, showing how our own demons can actually be the scariest of them all!

Thomas Howell (Michael Jibson) and Thomas Griffiths (Mark Lewis Jones) are posted at the Smalls Island Lighthouse, with the job of ‘keeping the light’ to protect sailors from the islands rock. The temperamental nature of the weather on the Irish Sea leads to the two becoming stranded 25 miles from land in the Lighthouse and as their supplies start to run out, their grip on reality begins to fail.

While based on a true story,...

First Images from Steven R. Monroe’s Jabberwocky
American World Pictures and Bron Studios have released the first images from Steven R. Monroe’s “Jabberwocky”, which just completed production and is now headed into post. Monroe is coming off the remake of “I Spit on Your Grave”, and previously directed the films “It Waits” and “House of 9″, both of which I found very decent. “Jabberwocky” looks like a swords-and-monsters fantasy movie, and co-stars Tahmoh Penikett (of “Battlestar Galactica” fame) and Kacey Barnfield (recently in “Resident Evil: Afterlife”). Jabberwocky chronicles the story of a young squire (Michael Worth) who, alongside his brother (Tahmoh Penikett), must become a warrior to save his people and the woman he loves (Kacey Barnfield) after a horrific beast is unleashed on the Kingdom. Starring Tahmoh Penikett, Michael Worth, Kacey Barnfield, Raffaello Degruttola, Steven Waddington, Richard Riddell, Ian Virgo, and directed by Steven R. Monroe. Look for it later this year.
