    On January 28th, 2005, he was taken ill while entertaining friends in his home near Evreux, Normandy; he was taken to hospital and died. He was diabetic and an alcoholic, and had had severe liver problems for some years. When once asked "how would you like to die?" he replied, "I'd like to faint".
