One of the best movies based on a board game, Clue is a cult classic and one of the silliest whodunits around. Named after the characters in the famous game from the 40s, the cast includes Yvette (Colleen Camp), Mr. Boddy (Lee Ving), Miss Scarlet (Lesley Ann Warren), Mr. Green (Michael McKean), Professor Plum (Christopher Lloyd), Wadsworth (Tim Curry), Mrs. Peacock (Eileen Brennan), Colonel Mustard (Martin Mull), and Mrs. White (Madeline Kahn). These people were asked to come to Mr. Boddy's large mansion, and each of them quickly becomes a suspect of murder. As the film progresses, more and more people around the mansion are found dead while more and more clever puns are tossed out. What makes this mystery particularly unique is that it follows the spirit of the game by allowing for more than one kind of ending. There aren't as many endings as there are characters, but...

Punk rock band Fear caused mayhem on Saturday Night Live on Halloween in 1981, bringing a mosh-pit to Studio 8H for the first time.
Days after the show, rumors started to swirl that the band fronted by Lee Ving, who would later star as Mr. Body on cult movie Clue, was permanently banned from SNL as a result of the destruction caused.
Over 45 years later, Questlove, who has directed Ladies & Gentlemen… 50 Years of SNL Music, which premieres on NBC on January 27, has uncovered the truth.
“I’ll occasionally read in the [NY] Post that so and so is banned for life. We’ve never banned anyone. We’re way too crass and opportunistic. If something’s hot, we’re going to go for it and have it on,” says creator Lorne Michaels.
How did a California punk band that once featured Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea end up performing on the hallowed NBC variety show?...

Saturday Night Live is pulling out all the stops for its 50th anniversary. In addition to the four-part docuseries SNL50: Beyond Saturday Night, which features behind-the-scenes footage plus celebrity and cast member interviews, NBC is also producing a separate documentary focusing on musical guests that have appeared on the show over the past 50 years – and it has the perfect director.
Deadline reports that Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson, drummer for The Roots, record producer, and DJ, is directing the SNL doc.
Questlove is no stranger to the world of music documentaries, having produced and directed the Oscar-winning doc Summer of Soul, which details the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival. The new film, titled Ladies & Gentlemen… 50 Years of SNL Music, will be co-directed by Oz Rodriguez, a former segment director for SNL.

Sometimes directors lament over the projects they never got to make, but David Cronenberg - best known for body horror classics The Fly, Videodrome, and Scanners - revealed a film producers desperately wanted him to make, but which he knowingly and proudly turned down, not because he didn't like the script but because he knew he just wasn't the right man for the job.
The film in question? Flashdance, the 1983 feel-good romantic dance drama about a young woman (Jennifer Beals) making ends meet as a welder and an exotic dancer who dreams of joining a prestigious ballet academy. It's an odd pairing to be sure, but as Cronenberg told Variety at the Marrakech Film Festival, the production team of Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer pursued the director relentlessly. He said:
"You might be amazed [they] were totally convinced that I was the right one to direct. Really, I don’t know...

A number of legendary Los Angeles punk rockers appeared on the Tuesday (May 7th) episode of the new Netflix show John Mulaney Presents Everybody’s in L.A. Members of Fear, X, Minutemen, Germs, and more were featured in an “Old Punks” focus group hosted by Fred Armisen.
The focus group included Minutemen members Mike Watt and George Hurley, Fear frontman Lee Ving, X’s Exene Cervenka and DJ Bonebreak, Germs drummer Don Bolles, Avengers leader Penelope Houston, Cramps/Gun Club guitarist Kid Congo Powers, Saccarine Trust’s Joe Baiza, the Plungers’ Trudie Arguelles-Barrett, and Johnny Ramone’s widow Linda Ramone.
The funny segment began with Armisen driving around L.A. and gathering up all the senior punks for a focus group. Once it started, Armisen asked a number of questions like, “What is the punk-est type of food?” To which Linda Ramone answered, “Pizza,” and Ving exclaimed, “Budweiser, the King of Beers!

Flashdance not only left its mark on cinema, but also on 80s fashion, unintentionally creating a legendary look with Jennifer Beals' cutoff sweatshirt. The iconic film is now set to be adapted into a television series, led by Dear White People creator Justin Simien, bringing the story into the modern era. Simien's successful track record and storytelling ability make him a great choice to revive Flashdance, adding to Paramount+'s lineup of classic reboots.
Flashdance not only marked an era for cinema, but also for fashion, exposing the best of 80s clothing. However, it seems that one of its protagonist's most characteristic looks was, in fact, an accident. Released in 1983, the film directed by Adrian Lyne is considered a classic of the 80s. The story centers on a young aspiring dancer named Alex, who dreams of being a successful artist. However, her reality is very different. By day, she works in a metallurgical welder,...

The murder-mystery renaissance really is in full effect right now. The likes of Only Murders In The Building, Poker Face, and Apple TV’s The Afterparty have been making armchair detectives of us all on the telly side of things, but it’s the big screen sleuthing boom that’s had genre fans flocking to the multiplexes with their magnifying glasses and (presumably) deerstalkers most recently. With whodunnits as wildly varied as Park Chan-wook’s sensual Decision To Leave, the superbly silly See How They Run, Rian Johnson_ – which leans hard into the ‘D’ of DC Comics – on offer, it’s not exactly hard to see why, either.
Now, as we prepare to take enough champagne to fill the, erm, canals of Venice with us to see Kenneth Branagh_, we at Empire HQ have put our tan raincoats on and launched an investigation into the very best the genre has to offer.

There may not be another comedy mystery as iconic as the 1985 cult classic, Clue. After all, the film had an all-star cast comprised of Tim Curry, Madeline Khan, Christopher Lloyd, Martin Mall, Lesley Ann Warren and Michael McKean. Additionally, the film delivered some outstanding one-liners that kept viewers engaged and entertained. However, the movie stands out because the entire premise, filled with humor, intrigue and suspense, was built off the titular board game, so the plot was a triumph as an original narrative.
Moreover, due to the success of Barbie at the box office, toy-inspired movies may begin to see a resurgence. If that's the case, Clue must be part of the conversation. As a result, even though the film isn't strictly based on a line of toys, Clue does deserve a sequel.

Walter Hill has had a long and fruitful career, directing some of everyone’s favorite films. He recently put out his western, Dead for a Dollar (read our review) and made the press rounds (check out our interview here) leading to a revaluation of his work somewhat. His filmography encompasses a lot of classics and many genres as a writer and as a director. His work as a producer covers even more ground. Here we will take a look at his directorial work which started in 1975 with Hard Times, and is still going today, The man has had one good career with rare few lesser films. To select which films to put on this list, the weaker ones were crossed out, and then we just had to go with our favorites as they are all parts of the best of what’s out there for film fans.

I’m not sure what’s more surprising, that I’m reviewing a movie called Death Rider in the House of Vampires or that, after Verotika, somebody put up money for Glenn Danzig to make another movie. But here we are.
As the film opens Death Rider is riding through a desert filled with warning signs and crucified bodies. He leads another horse, with a bound, topless woman on it. She is his entrance fee to Sanctuary, one female virgin. She looks like she probably couldn’t remember when she actually was a virgin but that’s besides the point.

Fox, Bento Box and Hasbro’s Entertainment One (eOne) are developing an animated series based on the iconic board game, Clue.
Clue, which was originally called Murder!, was invented by Englishman Anthony E. Pratt and launched in 1949. Pratt created the game during WWII to pass the time during lengthy air raid drills. Clue is conceptualized on the murder of Mr. Boddy, the host of the game’s “dinner party,” during which players must untangle various clues to determine who among the party’s six guests — Professor Plum, Colonel Mustard, Miss Scarlett, Mrs. Peacock, Mr. Green and Dr. Orchid — committed the crime.
Since its debut, Clue has been introduced to more than 30 countries. The game, which has 324 different plots for players to solve, was adapted into a film in 1985 (pictured above) that featured three alternate versions, each with a different ending. The movie, which starred Tim Curry, Eileen Brennan, Madeline Kahn,...

The World's Best Dad podcast is back with their second episode. This week, hosts Christian Jacobs and Jimmy Arrighi return in the bus, where they get into some crazy stories with legendary filmmaker Bobcat Goldthwait. The comedian gets into the time he set The Tonight Show's couch on fire, which earned him quite a bit of free publicity. Well, it wasn't exactly free. He was fined nearly $3,000 and had to do some PSAs too. Luckily, he was never really barred from the show, despite rumors he was banned for life.
In addition to the infamous Tonight Show fires, Bobcat Goldthwait talks about growing up and learning humor from his dad, touring and opening up for Kurt Cobain and Nirvana (on what would become the band's last shows in the United States), his best pal Robin Williams, being a dad and much more. Goldthwait even talks about how much Martin Scorsese enjoyed Shakes the Clown,...

Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Looper writer-director Rian Johnson's Knives Out will be hitting a theater near you this November and the movie sports one killer cast including Daniel Craig, Chris Evans, Michael Shannon, Lakeith Stanfield, Jamie Lee Curtis, and more. And today we have the movie's trailer for you to check out.
For those of you out there that might not know, this new Rian Johnsonmovie is being described as a modern take on the classic whodunit murder mystery. More specifically, the flick centers on a family gathering gone horribly awry when the family's patriarch (played by The Sound of Music star Christopher Plummer) dies, and two detectives (Craig and Stanfield) are sent to investigate the scene.
I don't know about you, but just the movie's premise has got me thinking of a modern day version of Jonathan Lynn and Debra Hill's 1985 adaptation of the boardgame Clue.

Opening and closing to the thunderous sounds of Prokofiev, Relaxer by Joel Potrykus is a grungy meditation on the fine art of relaxation. Relaxer is dark and disturbing. Relaxer is also very funny. The year is 1999. The world is caught in the grip of Y2K fever and fears of the apocalypse. A shut-in named Abbie (Joshua Burge) and his mean brother Cam (David Dastmalchian) live in a squalid apartment lined with graffiti, punk rock flyers and trash. The brothers engage in various dumb "challenges" in order to test each other's will. With Deadpool 2 hitting theaters tonight, the cast and crew have been doing press for the movie. Writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick unveiled new details about another project with Ryan Reynolds, their Clue remake. Back in January, Ryan Reynolds signed a first-look production deal with 20th Century Fox, with this Clue remake slated to be the first project under that deal. Now Paul Wernick has revealed quite the surprising detail in his interview alongside Rhett Reese at the Deadpool 2 premiere this week. Here's what he had to say below.

"Don't be surprised if Clue is an R-rated (movie)... Potentially."
The Clue board game was developed in the U.K., known as Cluedo, first released in 1949, with Parker Brothers releasing the game in the United States that same year under the name Clue. The game centered around a murder at Mr. Boddy's mansion as the players try to figure out who the killer is,...

Earlier today, the first Deadpool 2 poster debuted, which, in true Deapdool fashion, mocked a beloved movie. This time around, it was the 1980s dance classic Flashdance, with this new poster debuting on Ryan Reynolds Twitter, who even borrowed one of the Flashdance taglines, "Take your passion. And make it happen." This poster also coincided with the re-launch of the DeadpoolCore website, which was originally launched back in December 2015, as fans got ready for the first movie to hit theaters. For those who had signed up for the DeadpoolCore website a few years ago, you received a new email this morning with the poster, and a new "synopsis" for Deadpool 2 that is basically a modified version of the Flashdance synopsis, which gives a shout-out to Lee Ving, who played Jennifer Beals' boss in Flashdance.

20th Century Fox's long-gestating Clue remake is finally moving forward, with the studio bringing on Ryan Reynolds to produce and develop the adaptation, which is being crafted as a star vehicle for the actor/producer. The studio is also in talks with Deadpool and Deadpool 2 writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick to write the screenplay. No director is attached at this time, but this marks the first time in well over a year that this project has had some movement. And it will be the first movie in a huge new deal that Ryan Reynolds just signed with Fox, which should carry him over to the mouse house in the impending Disney era.
The actor has signed a three-year first look deal with the studio to develop new projects through his Maximum Effort production company, and this Clue project will be the first movie under this deal. This is...

Thirty years ago today, Clue, a whodunit spoof inspired by the popular board game in which the players have to find out who killed someone, and where, and with what, hit the theatres. First movie based on a board game, Clue had three alternative endings. In 1985, people who wanted to see the three endings had to go to three different theatres. Fortunately, the DVD version offers the three endings.

For years, Lee Ving, the vocalist and leader of impish punk bruisers Fear, has been teasing the release of a song the group recorded with John Belushi in 1981. He's finally putting out the tune — the appropriately snotty-sounding "Neighbors," which was supposed to accompany the Belushi movie of the same name — digitally on Halloween and as a special seven-inch in November. But even before the decades-long wait for its release, the origins of the recording were steeped in strife.

I was quite excited to hear that one of my favorite music documentaries at Sundance Film Fest was coming to SXSW 2013: Sound City, directed by Nirvana drummer and Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl. This film was a perfect fit for Austin, with Grohl's focus on the human element of music as well as the vanishing technology and places that built and supported music for decades.
Grohl delivered an inspirational keynote at SXSW Music Festival -- which you can watch on NPR Music -- that expanded on some of our conversation just before the SXSW premiere. Grohl was joined by fellow members of the Foo Fighters, Lee Ving of Fear, and the Sound City Players. Find out what he had to say, as well as see other famous rockers who were on the red carpet, after the jump.

Thank God for Dave Grohl. Everyone’s favorite Foo Fighter and the most cheerful member of Nirvana, his irrepressible energy and sheer delight in rocking the F out shines during his loving remembrance of the legendary Los Angeles recording studio Sound City in his debut documentary feature of the same name. Ostensibly a memorial to the studio that spawned such albums as Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours, the Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers catalog, and Nirvana’s Nevermind, among many, many other classic rock albums, the film also celebrates the craft and collaboration borne of this kind of specific recording process. And he trots out a Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame's worth of collaborators: Stevie Nicks, Rick Springfield, Tom Petty, Lee Ving of Fear, Trent Reznor, Josh Homme, Pat Smear, Butch Vig, and Paul McCartney, not to mention interviews with Neil Young, Rick Rubin, Mick Fleetwood, Lindsey Buckingham, Lars Ulrich,...

Chicago – Sometimes it’s difficult to determine why a film retains its cult status over the years. Jonathan Lynn’s adaptation of the Parker Brothers board game may be fondly remembered as a cult favorite simply because its source material was so unusual (at least back in 1985). Yet unlike “Battleship,” the game of “Clue” has a built-in plot and colorful ensemble that could easily inspire an entertaining script.
Alas, “Clue: The Movie” fails to provide a worthy showcase for its spectacularly overqualified actors, who are mainly required to stand around while Tim Curry (as cunning butler Wadsworth) gabs and gabs like Albert Finney in “Murder on the Orient Express.” Curry is such an exuberant performer that he nearly saves the picture, but the tedious gobs of exposition in Lynn’s uninspired script eventually do him in. There are few things less funny than a silly gag that is over-explained to death.

Without going into too many details about my personal life, let's just say I've seen my share of strippers and strip clubs of varying 'class' levels. Now the reason I'm telling you this is because today's Scenes (Songs) We Love takes place in a rough and tumble go-go bar that even as an innocent little kid (and long before my education in the art of burlesque) I knew was the tamest in film history: Mawby's Bar in Adrian Lyne's 80's dance classic, Flashdance. Most people know the theme What a Feeling, but as a little girl I was obsessed with the whole soundtrack (not to mention I couldn't wait to wear a bra to try that trick in the sweatshirt, but I digress), and the song I wore out the vinyl on was Laura Branigan's Imagination.

The date is the 31st of May, 2009. Let me just say this first and foremost; I go to a shit ton of conventions. Shit ton as in a whole lot of conventions. And believe it or not, I've never done a write-up on any of them. I've filmed plenty of videos at conventions and talked about them on podcasts and what have you, but never written an article about one.
To be perfectly honest, I've never done this because I usually only go to conventions these days to hang out with friends I haven't seen in a long time and to drink too much and end up hitting on Cerina Vincent (or being hit on by Tiffany Shepis). I couldn't care less about meeting celebrities anymore or looking through all the independent films booths. I know that makes me a heathen, but hey, I did all that for many years,...

"Adventureland" is around the corner. The Greg Mottola directed and written film finds theatres on April 3rd. Mottola is responsible for "Superbad," one of the funniest films in recent times. A talented cast works their magic in "Adventureland" including Jesse Eisenberg of "The Hunting Party," "Twilight" star Kristen Stewart, Ryan Reynolds ("Smokin' Aces"), Kristen Wiig ("Forgetting Sarah Marshall") and Bill Hader who also notched up laughs in "Superbad" alongside Seth Rogen. For the sake of interest, we've briefly compiled a list of amusement park scenes from films we found most memorable. These can be found after you read what "Adventureland" is all about. What's "Adventureland" about? It's the summer of 1987, and James Brennan (Jesse Eisenberg), an uptight recent college grad, can't wait to embark on his dream tour of Europe. But when his parents (Wendie Malick and Jack Gilpin) announce they can no longer subsidize his trip, James has little...
