Somewhere in the film development process, it should be clear if loud humour agrees with a political thriller that is supposed to deliver a strong commentary. A healthy dose of laughter is seldomly wrong, but if it’s planted carelessly it can spoil the outcome.

When the opening credits of Kip Oebanda‘s drama “Balota” unfold, the viewer is made to believe to be taking a trip to a funny account of things going wrong during the local elections for the mayor of a small provincial town in the Philippines. Everything speaks in its favor: the promotional reels for the male candidate Giancarlo Edraline (Gardo Versoza) including the beach photos with his bulging bikini package and the six-pack versus his female opponent’s (the ruling mayor Elena Hildago’s) more conservative, but kitsch-induced images promise a kind of entertainment we expect from the American show wrestlers.
