Denis Villenueve inarguably accomplished an impressive feat with his first two "Dune" movies. Finally giving Frank Herbert's supposedly "unfilmable" 1965 novel a worthy big screen adaptation, the French Canadian filmmaker somehow managed to craft his own unique vision while staying true to the author's original story.
Villeneueve was clearly loyal to Herbert's writing but wasn't so precious about it that his movies didn't make changes to the novel. In places, the director and his team were able to make their own creative decisions, such as when production designer Patrice Vermette based the look of the Emperor Shaddam's tent on a Rolex watch. Elsewhere, cinematographer Greig Fraser shot the exterior of the Harkonnen home planet Giedi Prime with infrared cameras to produce a monochrome image that reflected the black sun-drenched surface of the world. These were all creative decisions the team had to make in order to bring Herbert's words to life in a visual medium.

The bumpy road to Oscar glory will reach its end Sunday night at the 97th Academy Awards, closing out one of the most unpredictable awards seasons in years. Ups and downs, twists and turns, mudslinging, mea culpas, tears both happy and sad — we’ve seen it all in recent weeks as the race kept us guessing what new upheaval might come next.
And that includes who wins tonight. “Emilia Pérez” might have the most nominations (13), but Jacques Audiard’s Spanish-language musical lost its frontrunner status pretty much the moment star Karla Sofía-Gascón’s history of bigoted tweets resurfaced. In stepped “Anora,” which won top prizes with both the PGA and DGA and seemed ready to sail to a Best Picture victory…until “Conclave” swept in and showed us that the race was much tighter than we’d thought.
And what looked like an unobstructed path to best actress anointment for...

Mary Parent has seen it all. Since her youthful days hanging with current Warner Bros. co-chairs Michael DeLuca and Pamela Abdy at New Line Cinema, she has worked her way up the ranks at Universal Pictures, where she and Scott Stuber ran the movie division, to her own production shingle, Disruption Entertainment, which currently co-produces with Legendary Entertainment. Among many other things, Parent produced Guillermo del Toro’s “Pacific Rim” series, A.G. Iñárritu’s Oscar-winning “The Revenant,” and the Monsterverse movies including blockbuster “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” ($572 million worldwide).
But the films consuming most of her attention over the past few years are Denis Villeneuve’s ongoing “Dune” trilogy (Warner Bros./Legendary). She oversees all the films at Legendary, but on some projects like “Dune,” which she sold to Legendary three years before she joined the company, she’s an on-the- ground producer.

IndieWire invited the production designers from the Oscar-nominated films to choose and analyze a pivotal scene that best showcases their craft. Here are the four who were able to participate: Judy Becker (“The Brutalist”), Suzie Davies (“Conclave”), Patrice Vermette (“Dune: Part Two”), and Nathan Crowley (“Wicked”).
Brady Corbet’s post-Holocaust drama, “The Brutalist,” pits Oscar-nominated Adrien Brody as visionary architect László Tóth against Oscar-nominated Guy Pearce as industrialist Harrison Van Buren. Becker channeled Tóth to create furniture, a library, and a towering building symbolizing his lived history and struggle. She was already familiar with the minimalist architectural style of Brutalism, which emphasized function over form with its large blocks of concrete and steel. Her work was the perfect match for the film’s wide, rectangular VistaVision format.

“Nosferatu” (Craig Lathrop), “Wicked” (Nathan Crowley), and “Conclave” (Suzie Davies) were the period, fantasy, and contemporary production design winners at the 29th annual Art Directors Guild Awards, held February 15 at the InterContinental Los Angeles Downtown.
Also winning for animation was “The Wild Robot”, following its Annies sweep and Ves prizes. On the TV side, “Shōgun,” “Squid Game,” “Fallout,” and “The Penguin” were the winners for their production designers in their respective categories.
The Lathrop win for “Nosferatu” was not surprising when you consider that “The Brutalist” production designer Judy Becker is not an Adg member. She has been the presumptive Oscar favorite for channeling Oscar-nominated Adrien Brody’s visionary architect, László Tóth, in applying a Brutalist style to the architectural designs of mid-century Pennsylvania with its bold shapes and function over form aesthetic.
Lathrop, who has worked on all of director Robert Eggers’ other films, received his first Oscar nomination for “Nosferatu.

Wicked, Nosferatu, Conclave, Shogun, The Penguin, Fallout and Squid Game were among the winners at the Art Directors Guild Awards on Saturday night.
The 29th annual Excellence in Production Design Awards were handed out by the Art Director’s Guild (Adg, IATSE Local 800) at the InterContinental Los Angeles Downtown during an event hosted by comedian Rachael Harris.
The Adg wins will have the attention of those looking for signs of who will take the Academy Award for production design. The winner of the Adg’s fantasy film honor have taken home the production design Oscar three times in the past six years, with Poor Things, Dune and Black Panther all going on to win the Oscar. Denis Villeneuve is the kind of director actors seek out. Much like his buddy Christopher Nolan (who Villeneuve considers a master of the craft), the French Canadian filmmaker has earned enough name recognition to bring hordes to the theater -- which is exactly what he did with his two "Dune" movies. The supposedly "un-filmable" saga, first told in Frank Herbert's 1965 novel, was rendered in stunning detail across 2021's "Dune" and 2024's "Dune: Part Two," with Villeneuve reminding us of not only why he's one of today's pre-eminent directors, but of his knack for sci-fi storytelling.
Of course, it helped that the movie featured two of today's biggest stars, with Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya in the roles of Paul Atreides and Chani respectively. The pair's involvement ensured the admittedly dense lore of "Dune" wasn't entirely overlooked by younger generations, who flocked to theaters to see the young stars and propelled...

After two separate delays due to the Los Angeles wildfires, the 2025 Critics Choice Awards have all finally been handed out. The winners list provides another indicator of the strength of several films leading into the Academy Awards March 2, though TV plays a big role in the Critics Choice Awards as well — even if many of the top contenders on that side of the event, such as “Shogun,” which led the TV awards with four wins, are not eligible for this September’s Emmys having already stormed last year’s Emmys.
“Anora” won Best Picture out of a field of 10 nominees. It was the only Critics Choice Award the Sean Baker film starring Mikey Madison won full stop. The most film wins went to “Wicked,” “Emilia Pérez,” and “The Substance” with three each.

“Wicked,” “Emilia Pérez,” and “The Substance” each triumphed with three wins at the 30th annual Critics Choice Awards on Friday night. However, it was “Anora” that claimed the best picture prize at this year’s ceremony.
The Neon release entered the race with seven nominations, including best actress for Mikey Madison and best director and original screenplay for Sean Baker. But ultimately, “Anora” walked away with the coveted best picture award, and nothing more.
Meanwhile, “Wicked” director Jon M. Chu, who wasn’t nominated in the Academy Awards’ best director category, beat out several Oscar nominees to win the best director honor at the Critics Choice Awards. “I’m going to win that Oscar!” Chu said jokingly on stage.

As recently as 2020, only 27.5% of production designers in the Art Directors Guild were women.
What a difference five years makes. That number has increased, according to the guild’s president Dina Lipton. “I feel seeing more women nominated each year is exciting,” Lipton says. “We also have lots of young people coming out of school, specifically studying production design, and most of them are women.” Furthermore, for the first time, the guild has an all-female executive board.
This year, two women are nominated at the Oscars for production design: Suzie Davies for “Conclave” and Judy Becker for “The Brutalist.”
With the Art Directors Guild set to hand out their top prizes on Feb. 15, Lipton takes a look at the artistry and vision behind the five Art Directors Guild nominees who overlap with Oscar.

Hollywood’s award season has already warmed up the new year; the Golden Globes successfully separated favorites from potential surprises, and nominations for SAG and Critics Choice Awards have already been unveiled. Now, the British Academy Film Awards have followed suit.
While Hollywood is fighting the cataclysmic California wildfires, postponing forthcoming ceremonies and extending Academy Awards submission dates, fortunately, all the way across the Atlantic Ocean, the British Isles face no such threat. The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) has announced nominees across 26 categories, recognizing outstanding contributions to cinema.
Doctor Who actor David Tennant, last year’s host, will return to lead the ceremony. This year marks one of the most competitive lineups, with no clear frontrunners and several close races. Conclave leads with 12 nominations, followed closely by Emilia Pérez with 11. Anora director Sean Baker achieved a historic six individual nods,...

“ The thing with Denis is we kind of professionally grew up in the same circles in Montreal. We come from independent films,” remembers production designer Patrice Vermette about filmmaker Denis Villeneuve, with whom he’s worked on multiple films, most recently Dune: Part Two. They teamed up on a relatively smaller scale at the start of their collaborative relationship over a decade ago. In 2013, they made the mind-bending indie Enemy and the studio crime thriller Prisoners. “ The relationship it’s like, we looked at each other like two kids still playing with Legos, that type of thing.” Then they thought, “Let’s push it a bit further … and every movie we dream a little more.” Eventually, you’ll be building whole planets and societies.

The Art Directors Guild Awards has announced the nominations for its 29th annual kudos, and all five of this year’s predicted production design Oscar nominees received bids from the guild on Thursday: The Brutalist and Gladiator II in the period race, Dune: Part Two and Wicked in the fantasy category, and Conclave in the contemporary contest.
This group, which celebrates excellence in theatrical motion pictures, television, commercials, and music videos, has an impressive track record for previewing the Academy Awards. Over the past 28 years, the eventual Oscar winner for Best Production Design has always numbered among the Adg nominees in the various categories, including last year when Poor Things prevailed at both events.
This year’s honors will be distributed on Feb. 15 during a ceremony hosted by comedian and actress Rachael Harris at the InterContinental Los Angeles Downtown. (See the complete list of names below.) Final voting for guild members opens on Jan.

The Art Directors Guild has announced the nominees for its 29th Annual Excellence in Production Design Awards. Production design is all about worldbuilding, and so it’s fitting that the nominees are spread out by the kinds of worlds production designers are asked to create and the demands of their setting. The feature film nominee categories are amongst period settings, contemporary settings, and fantasy settings and the television shows are divided further by format between single-camera hourlong, half-hour, multicamera series, limited series, and TV movie, among others.
But the nominees themselves align with IndieWire’s predicted frontrunners for the Oscar category. “Dune: Part Two” and “Wicked,” among others, are nominated in the fantasy feature film category, while “The Brutalist,” and “Conclave” each received nominations in period feature and contemporary feature, respectively. On the TV side, “Shōgun” continues its conquest of guild nominations with one for period single-camera series, but “Squid Game,...

“The Substance,” “Conclave” and “Wicked” are among the films nominated by the Art Directors Guild (IATSE Local 800) for its 28th Excellence in Production Design Awards in motion pictures, television, commercial and music video categories.
The Adg divides live-action features into three categories: period feature film, fantasy feature film and contemporary feature film. “A Complete Unknown,” “The Brutalist,” “Gladiator II,” “Nosferatu” and “Saturday Night” were nominated in the period feature film category. In the fantasy film category, “Alien: Romulus, “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, “Dune: Part Two,” “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” and “Wicked” all landed nods. “Civil War,” Conclave,” “Emilia Pérez” and “The Substance” and “Twisters” earned contemporary film nominations.

The Set Decorators Society of America announced its nominations for the 2024 Sdsa Awards for Film today, celebrating excellence in the art of set decoration for movies released in 2024.
Five films were nominated in each of the four categories: Contemporary, Period, Fantasy or Science Fiction, and Comedy or Musical. Final voting for the winners takes place from Jan. 11 to Jan. 17 and winners will be announced Feb. 2, 2025.
This is just the fifth year of the Sdsa Awards, but this important precursor has already become a formidable bellwether for the Academy Awards. In three of the past four ceremonies, the eventual Oscar winner for Best Production Design won this set decoration prize first. Mank won Best Period Feature here before prevailing at the Oscars in 2021. The next year, Dune to Best Fantasy or Science Fiction Film before winning over the Academy. Last year, Poor Things won Best Period Feature before its big Oscars win.

It's hard to imagine where Denis Villeneuve began when he first took on the task of giving Frank Herbert's "Dune" the big screen adaptation it deserved. The supposedly "unfilmable" book had lived up to that reputation multiple times before the French Canadian filmmaker came to it. David Lynch's "Dune" had plenty wrong with it, even while it retains many defenders, and the Sci-Fi Channel shows were never going to be able to provide the spectacle required for a truly effective adaptation. While all the "Dune" adaptations had their charms, then, none really ever felt like they'd fulfilled the cinematic promise of Herbert's novel.
Finally following through on that promise is just one of the reasons Villeneuve's two "Dune" movies are as impressive as they are. But for the director, simply deciding where to shoot this galaxy-spanning...

When it came to returning to Arrakis for Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune: Part Two,” the entire production had the opportunity to delve deeper into the Fremen culture as the story finds Timothée Chalamet’s Paul Atreides embedded with the Fremen people for most of the runtime. That deep-dive into the Fremen provided both great opportunity and unique challenges for the filmmakers behind the $715 million-grossing sequel.
“The scene of the assembly chamber where Paul Atreides declares himself as Liasn al-Gaib is probably one of my favorites,” producer Tanya Lapointe told TheWrap for a new installment of How I Did It, presented by Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures.
“In Arrakis you don’t meet above grounds because it’s way too harsh,” Oscar-winning cinematographer Greig Fraser said of the scene as Lapointe noted that everything about the way the Fremen live is “based on survival and strength and loyalty and the collective...

Don’t expect Denis Villeneuve to take a call while making Dune Messiah, and not because the signal is weak on Arrakis.
The 3x Oscar nominee recently revealed that phones are “absolutely” banned from his sets as they’re “addictive,” noting that he’s “very tempted to disconnect myself” from screens altogether as well.
“Cinema is an act of presence. When a painter paints, he has to be absolutely focused on the color he’s putting on the canvas. It’s the same with the dancer when he does a gesture,” he explained to the Los Angeles Times. “With a filmmaker, you have to do that with a crew, and everybody has to focus and be entirely in the present, listening to each other, being in relationship with each other. So cellphones are banned on my set too, since Day 1. It’s forbidden. When you say cut, you don’t...

There’s a new frontrunner in Gold Derby’s Oscar odds for Best Production Design: Nathan Crowley for “Wicked”
The English artisan has broken his tie with Patrice Vermette (“Dune: Part Two”) to claim the No. 1 position on our chart for the upcoming 2025 Oscars. Note that it’s still quite early in this awards season, and things could keep changing as our experts, editors, and top 24 users continue to update their predictions.
After two decades as one of the most popular musicals on the Broadway stage, “Wicked” finally arrived in theaters with Part 1 in November 2024. Cynthia Erivo plays Elphaba Thropp, aka the Wicked Witch of the West, and Ariana Grande takes on the role of Galinda Upland, aka Glinda the Good, in director Jon M. Chu‘s instant classic film from Universal Pictures.
This would be Crowley’s seventh career Oscar nomination, after previously being recognized for “The Prestige” (2006), “The Dark Knight...

Denis Villeneuve's major sci-fi blockbuster Dune: Part Two is hoping to make a major splash at the 2025 Oscars, but how many nominations and wins will it actually get? Frank Herbert's iconic novel's return to the big screen turned it into a major awards contender in 2022 thanks to how Villeneuve executed his vision. The result was Dune received 10 Oscar nominations and won six categories. That put significant pressure on Dune 2 to replicate the awards season success of the first film or even surpass it by securing Villeneuve a Best Director nomination.
Thanks to the reception to Dune 2, there is every expectation that the movie will be nominated at the 97th Academy Awards on March 2, 2025. It's a major box office hit - grossing $714 million worldwide - and well-received by critics and audiences with 92% and 95% scores on Rotten Tomatoes. Although it came out almost exactly one year before the 2025 Oscars,...
