30 Years Later, Give Clive Barker's 'Lord of Illusions' a Second Chance
Image
Clive Barker has gifted audiences with some of the most disturbing horror stories for over 40 years, both in his many works of fiction and his occasional forays onto screens both big and small. The British horror icon is best known for writing and directing Hellraiser, a screen adaptation of his novella The Hellbound Heart, which spawned a massively successful (though creatively dubious) franchise and a well-received reboot in 2022. Dismayed by poor adaptations of his previous work, Barker opted to direct the film himself, a relatively unprecedented move for a young writer at the time.

While Hellraiser is often in the conversation for best horror films of all time, Barker's two follow-ups as director failed to capture the same kind of attention. His second film, Nightbreed, flopped upon release, but has since come to be considered an underrated cult classic, receiving a director's cut re-release back in 2014. But his third film,...

Liverpool born Clive Barker is a well-known name in fiction, and especially in horror. His novels have sold millions of copies all over the world and many of his stories have been adapted to the screen over the last three decades, one of those films was Lord of Illusions, based on the short story “The Last Illusion” from Barker’s Books of Blood Vol. 6, a compilation of stories from 1985.

Directed by Clive himself, Lord of Illusions is a fantasy horror starring Scott Bakula (Quantum Leap), Kevin J. O’Connor and Famke Janssen (X-Men). This was the last film that Barker directed after previously stepping behind the camera for Nightbreed and Hellraiser. The director’s cut of Lord of Illusions is,...

Danny Dyer's revealed he was pals with Pinter. An odd couple, but look at these
Groucho Marx and Alice Cooper out on the town? Joss Stone sharing takeaways with Tom Cruise. We celebrate Hollywood's more unlikely alliances

As the nation recovers from Tony Blair's literary mea innocentia, another era-defining memoir emerges this week when Straight Up, Danny Dyer's shoot-from-the-hip autobiography hits the shelves. The publicity confides that the book "tears it up proper and delivers on every page", and only the very naive would doubt such a claim. Everyone knows Dyer as the salt-of-the-earth rough diamond whose straight-talking DVD commentaries and girlfriend-slashing "production error" in his advice column have made him the toast of coalition Britain.

Less well known is that the Canning Town bruiser and the late Harold Pinter shared a generation-spanning and credulity-stretching friendship. The young Dyer appeared in two of Pinter's plays, the Hackney-born playwright taking the chirpy East End sparrow under his wing in an odd-couple hook-up that called...
