Adam Sandleris a comedy legend and there are a lot of his movies that fans love. One such movie is Spanglish. Sandler stars as a chef named John Clasky whose new housekeeper, Flor (Paz Vega), has to move in with the family to accommodate her young daughter. Blending two families together this way obviously isn't easy, and it ends up being one of Sandler's more serious roles. Now, the film is leaving Netflix, and if you want to dive in before it leaves, you'd better hurry, as it heads out on August 1!
Spanglish also stars Téa Leoni as John's wife Deborah, Cloris Leachman as Evelyn, Deborah's mother, and more. Released in 2004, the romantic comedy was one of two rom-coms that Sandler put out that year. 50 First Dates was released in February of that year, and then Spanglish came out in December during the holiday season. While most streaming services get a bad reputation for canceling fan-favorite shows like Westworld, The Winchesters, and Mindhunter, Netflix gets it even worse for canceling fan-favorite shows in their infancy. Sometimes, fan backlash can save a show from getting canceled outright, either by it getting a smaller final season like Superman & Lois, or getting shopped to another platform. In most cases, however, the series stays dead. But that isn’t the case for The Oa.
Six years ago, the sci-fi series was unceremoniously canceled by Netflix, and fans weren’t happy. The series, co-created by Brit Marlingand Zal Batmanglij, was widely loved by fans for a gripping plot, supernatural elements, and fantastical yet grounded storytelling. Its cancellation also left fans on a major cliffhanger at the end of Season 2. But it seems that the creators are quite adamant about finishing their story as Jason Isaacs, who played antagonist Dr. Hunte,...

The Oa, the sci-fi mystery by Netflix, is one of the streamer's signature genre shows, even if it hasn't been in the spotlight lately. Created by Zal Batmanglij and Brit Marling, the latter of whom also plays the lead, The Oa was a bit polarizing with audiences upon release, but the critical reception was always good. Season 2 was very well-received too, but it surprisingly got canceled months after the premiere. Since 2019, fans have been pleading for its return, and now star Jason Isaacs has offered a promising update that will give fans something to be excited about.
"We will not let it go," Isaacs said about The Oa when talking to Jo Whiley on her podcast. As reported by Comic Book, Isaacs appeared on the podcast and addressed the Netflix fan-favorite released in 2016. Set in 1980s Spain, actor Paz Vega’s subtly affecting directing debut shows a family suffering under an abusive father, but is warmed by optimism and compassion
Spanish actor Paz Vega makes her directing debut with this sensitive portrait of domestic abuse and patriarchy in 1980s Spain. It’s told through the eyes of seven-year-old Rita (Sofía Allepuz), whose mum, Mari (played by Vega) is trapped in a violent marriage. We see the world how Rita sees it: filled with of moments of joy and discovery; her sense of wonder adds tenderness and hope to the story. It’s never voyeuristic (the violence happens almost entirely off screen), but Rita is effective at evoking how each member of the family is brutalised by abuse, living in a constant state of hypervigilance.
Rita works hard. Her little seven-year-old hands scrub, carry heavy plates and wash dishes to make her mother’s life a little easier.

Antonio Banderas keeps his mouth shut, and his gun loaded in this divisive action thriller, which is now making some noise on free streaming. Released back in 2017, Acts of Vengeance evokes the best kind of action B-movie in this tale of a lawyer who doesn't know when to keep his mouth shut, vowing silence and revenge after his family is murdered.
Directed by Isaac Florentine, who is certainly no stranger to the genre, as demonstrated in his frequent collaborations with underrated action icon Scott Adkins in the likes of Ninja: Shadow of a Tear, Undisputed II: Last Man Standing, and Close Range, Acts of Vengeance stars The Boys’ Karl Urban, as well as Paz Vega and Cristina Serafini alongside Banderas. The action outing, which proved deeply divisive at the time, is now getting a second shot at success thanks to the free streaming platform, Tubi, where it currently stands #7 in the top 10.

Long before she became the sharp-tongued and independent Beth Dutton in Yellowstone, Kelly Reilly was already proving herself a master of powerful performances. While her rise to fame may seem tied to the success of Taylor Sheridan’s modern Western, Reilly’s earlier work, particularly in period films, revealed her ability to bring depth and strength to various roles. In 2009, she delivered standout performances in three period films, each setting the stage for her eventual breakout on TV.
Despite her undeniable screen presence, Reilly was frequently cast in supporting roles. While she did have more leading roles in films like Eden Lake, it was in period dramas that her ability to fully embrace a character really stood out. The resilience, wit and strength she brought to these earlier performances prove that Reilly’s path to Yellowstone was paved with roles that showed her strengths in ways that only now receive full recognition.

Adam Sandler is a comedic heavy hitter in the industry. His prolific career in the 1990s and 2000s saw him starring in so many movies that some gems inevitably slipped through the cracks of mainstream popularity. But the times are a-changin’ and, thanks to the rise of streaming services, a whole new generation gets to witness Sandler at his best. Spanglish, a rom-com from 2004, is the latest to join the lineup, arriving on Netflix on Feb. 1.
Spanglish tells the story of Flor (Paz Vega), a Mexican immigrant and devoted single mother who does not speak English. She takes a job as a housekeeper for the affluent Clasky family, which consists of John, a Los Angeles chef and the family patriarch, Deborah, his wife and former businesswoman, their children Bernice and Georgie, and Deborah’s mother, Evelyn, a retired singer. Set against the backdrop of the 1992 Sevilla Expo, this Netflix thriller begins with a devastating explosion that kills Alvaro, an executive involved in the expo’s plans. Amparo (Marian Álvarez), his widow, struggles with the chaos of grief and suspects his death was not an accident. The Spanish film academy gave a surprise snub to its best-known director when Pedro Almodóvar’s The Room Next Door was not nominated for best film for the Goya Film Awards, Spain’s equivalent to the Oscars.
The Room Next Door picked up 13 Goya nominations, including best director for Almodóvar and best acting nominations for both of the film’s leads, Tilda Swinton and Julianne Moore, but the film was left out of the best picture category. Perhaps the language barrier — it’s Almodóvar’s first English-language feature — counted against it among Spanish academy voters.
Instead, the Goya’s best picture race will include five Spanish-language features: Casa en flames from director Dani de la Orden, Marcel Barrena’s El 47, La estrella azul from Javier Macipe, Arantxa Echevarría’s La infiltrada, and Segundo premio from director Isaki Lacuesta and Pol Rodríguez, which was Spain’s official Oscar submission this year.

In 2024, there is no shortage of possible imagined dystopian futures. Not just because there’s an ever-growing canon of films that dream up humanity’s worst-case scenarios but because news about climate disasters, headlines about dwindling natural resources and well-founded fears about the encroaching power of AI dominate our day-to-day lives. That’s perhaps what makes Leticia Tonos’s “Aire, Just Breathe” both incredibly timely and decidedly familiar. The Dominican sci-fi film is an austere vision of a ravaged future that, while visually striking, remains much too hollow, cerebral, even, to fully pack an emotional punch.

Firmly established as one of Europe’s biggest dedicated showcases for movies from Latin America, Spain and Portugal, Huelva Ibero-American Film Festival celebrates its 50th edition with a bang, with a high-caliber main Competition, a new showcase on Spain. Following, some highlights and trends at this year’s festival, which runs Nov. 15-23.
Paz Vega: A Director is Born
Paz Vega will accept at Huelva a Premio Luz at this year’s opening ceremony. It comes at an opportune time. Known to date as a performer – star of Adam Sandler comedy “Spanglish” and Julio Medem’s carnal physiological odyssey “Sex and Lucia” – Vega has just bowed her first feature, the heavily autobiographical “Rita,” to upbeat reviews. Major plaudits to not only the central performance of the eponymous Rita, a loveable seven year-old moppet growing up in 1984 working class Seville, but Vega’s helming. “Rita’ is shot with an exquisite taste for light,...

“The Girl With the Needle” Magnus von Horn (Denmark)
Denmark’s submission to the International Feature race unspools in the years after World War II and follows Karoline, an out-of-work young pregnant woman who meets Dagmar, a woman who runs a clandestine adoption agency. “Flow” Gints Zilbalodis (Latvia)
One of the year’s best-received animated features and Latvia’s Oscars submission, “Flow” heads to Seville as one of the strongest indie contenders for an animated feature nomination. In the wordless film, a small group of animals on a...

Paz Vega-starrer “Death Has No Master,” a Venezuela-set thriller from director Jorge Thielen Armand, is participating in Tiffcom’s Tokyo Gap-Financing Market, as the producers seek to secure the final 30% of the film’s $1.2 million budget.
The film, which previously participated in the Venice Production Bridge’s Gap-Financing Market, stars Vega as a woman who returns to Venezuela after two decades to sell her family’s cacao plantation, has recently shifted its shooting location to Colombia. The story follows her character Carolina’s confrontation with former workers who have occupied the land, leading to a dangerous power struggle that forces her to face both past trauma from a kidnapping and her own violent impulses.
The project marks Armand’s third feature following the acclaimed “La Soledad” and “La Fortaleza.” “My films are vehicles to investigate a broken identity – that of Venezuelans today – pieces of a puzzle I hope become...

Evan Shapiro entertained, shocked and awed an industry crowd in Madrid this week. The former top executive at the likes of Comcast’s NBCUniversal and Participant Media, as well as producer (Portlandia, Brick City), now calls himself a “media universe cartographer” and shares graphics, charts and unconventional thoughts on such platforms as his Substack newsletter “Media War & Peace: Reports from the War for Our Attention.”
And he reflected on the current — and future — state of media and the key role of Ibero-American markets during a keynote appearance at Iberseries & Platino Industria in Madrid, following a keynote appearance from Spanish actress and director Paz Vega.
Among the themes he touched on was the financial and market power of the six technology “Death Stars,” as he calls them, that are each worth more than $1 trillion in market value — namely Amazon, Alphabet, Apple, Meta, Microsoft and Nvidia — and why streaming has remained a difficult business.

Rambo: Last Blood is getting a free streaming home. The movie, which is the final installment of Sylvester Stallone's Rambo movie series, will start streaming for free on Tubi on Oct. 1.
Released in theaters in 2019, Rambo: Last Blood was directed by Adrian Grnberg. The film brings back Stallone for the fifth and likely last-ever time he'll star as the iconic John Rambo character. This time, Rambo heads to Mexico in order to rescue his adopted niece from a dangerous cartel. Though time is catching up with Rambo at this point in his life, the character is no less deadly than he's ever been, allowing the unkillable hero to go out with a bang.

Religious drama “Judas’ Gospel,” directed by Italy’s Giulio Base and starring Rupert Everett, Paz Vega, John Savage and Abel Ferrara, has scored its first pre-sale with distributor Plus Films Kft taking Latin American rights.
The film, now in post, recently wrapped shooting in Italy’s scenic Southern Calabria region. It is being shopped to buyers by Italy’s Minerva Pictures on the sidelines of the Toronto Film Festival.
Base is a prolific actor-director whose many film and TV directing credits comprise “The Anarchist Banker” that launched from the Venice official selection in 2019. He is also artistic director of the Turin Film Festival.
“Judas’ Gospel” takes an innovative approach in retelling the tale of Judas Iscariot, known for his biblical betrayal of Jesus when he disclosed his whereabouts for 30 pieces of silver. In the film Judas, who is about to die, reflects on his life and his relationship with Jesus and the disciples.

Spanish screen star Paz Vega has been tapped to topline “Death Has No Master,” from Venezuelan director Jorge Thielen Armand, which was selected to take part in the Venice Production Bridge’s Gap-Financing Market taking place from Aug. 30 – Sept. 1.
The film follows a Venezuelan woman, Carolina (Vega), who returns to the country after 20 years abroad, only to discover that her family’s cacao plantation has been occupied by its former workers, who are determined to remain at all costs. In the cat-and-mouse game that ensues, she unmasks a brutal side of herself as she tries to attain justice in a lawless land.
Producer Stefano Centini, of Rome-based Volos Films Italia, said this would be a “breakthrough” role for the Spanish superstar, who recently premiered her directorial debut, “Rita,” on the Locarno Film Festival’s Piazza Grande. Armand added: “We’re used to seeing Paz Vega as an icon of beauty and glamor,...

There is a lot of truth to the belief that a movie's ending can and will make or break it. Even the best stories and spectacles shown on the big screen had their legacies ruined in real time because of a questionable or even downright terrible conclusion. The opposite is true for movies that most would consider mediocre or even horrible. Thanks to either an undeniably exciting final fight or a surprisingly compelling and effective narrative endgame, these otherwise lackluster movies were saved from mockery and obscurity. Some even went on to become genuine cult classics.
The only thing more important than these movie endings being fun and emotionally satisfying in a vacuum was how they made up for everything that happened before. Whether it was due to a slow start or an apparent adherence to formula, these movies had rocky starts but, thankfully, ended on high notes. Because of this,...
