To get her music back, first Taylor Swift had to re-record it. After a consortium led by Scooter Braun bought the rights to the masters for her first six albums in 2019, much to Swift’s displeasure, she hatched a simple, if wildly labor-intensive plan: Make new Taylor’s Versions of her catalog available, and then ask her massive fanbase to stream them instead of the originals.
No one had ever tried anything like it before, but fans complied by the millions. The strategy worked exactly as intended, devaluing the masters...

Michael J. Fox and Gibson guitars are searching for the cherry red Es-345 guitar that the actor famously played in Back to the Future, which has been missing since the late 1980s.
Fox played the guitar during the film’s pivotal scene at the “Enchantment Under the Sea” dance, as his character Marty McFly tried to make sure his high school-aged parents fell in love. Filling in for injured bandleader Marvin Berry (Harry Waters Jr.), Marty rips a rendition of “Johnny B. Goode” (with some hair metal-style solos for good...

Kelsey Grammer has inhabited Dr. Frasier Crane on television for over 40 years (though not consecutively). Starting with his first appearance on "Cheers" in 1984, the acclaimed actor has taken the beloved psychiatrist from the friendly bar in Boston where everyone knows your name to his hometown of Seattle for a long-running spinoff and back to Boston for a short-lived (but hopefully extended) stint as a Harvard professor. He even stopped by Nantucket for an Emmy-nominated appearance at the tight-knit commuter airport on "Wings."
In all those years as Dr. Crane, Grammer has acted alongside a number of incredible guest stars. In fact, he encountered multiple in a single episode of "Frasier" since many prominent performers and personalities appeared as callers on the good doctor's popular radio show. Iconic "Superman" actor Christopher Reeve, rock music icon Eddie Van Halen, sitcom royalty Mary Tyler Moore, and prolific director Penny Marshall were just a...

“The America I love, the America I’ve written about, that has been a beacon of hope and liberty for 250 years, is currently in the hands of a corrupt, incompetent, and treasonous administration,” Bruce Springsteen declared from a Manchester, U.K. stage May 14. At the kick-off show of his newly rechristened Land of Hope and Dreams Tour with the E Street Band, Springsteen framed his criticism of Donald Trump in patriotism: “The America that I’ve sung to you about for 50 years is real, and regardless of its faults, is...

Wolfgang Van Halen stopped by the Drumeo studio for a new video feature about his uncle, Alex, the drummer of Van Halen. In the 20-minute clip, Wolfgang opens up about his uncle’s legacy as a somewhat underrated facet of Van Halen, while also playing through a few Van Halen songs on the kit himself.
“If he wasn’t in a band with Eddie Van Halen, I think he would be lauded as one of the greatest drummers of all-time,” Wolfgang said. “Seeing the show live, you’ve got Dave fucking jumping around, doing pirouettes and shit, and you’ve got all the crazy shit dad’s doing — there’s so much happening, you can’t really lock in on the fact that Alex is demolishing everything in the most amazing way.”

After 35 years, The Simpsons is making a significant change to one of its most recognizable voices. Pamela Hayden, who has voiced the endearingly nerdy character, Milhouse, since the series began in 1989, has officially stepped away from the role. Her departure marks a major shift for the long-running series, which rarely changes its core cast.
In this Sunday’s season 36 finale, a new voice will quietly take over the character. It’s quite a handoff, but a meaningful one. For a show built on a long-running legacy, replacing a voice so closely tied to a character is no small move, and fans are about to hear the difference.

For 35 years, Bart Simpson’s blue-haired best friend, Milhouse Van Houten, was voiced by the same actor, Pamela Hayden, on Fox’s The Simpsons. Hayden announced her retirement in November 2024 after appearing in nearly 700 episodes of the beloved cartoon, prompting the question of who would take over the role of Milhouse. Hayden also voiced the bully Jimbo Jones on the show in addition to the nerdy Milhouse.
The wait is over now as, per Entertainment Weekly, singer Kelly Macleod will take over as the voice of Milhousestarting with the 36th season finale of The Simpsons set to air Sunday, May 18. The episode, titled “Estranger Things,” is described per the official summary as, “When Bart and Lisa stop watching Itchy & Scratchy together, Marge fears that they’ll start to drift apart…but she has no idea how bad things are about to get.”

This year, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame will induct acts including Soundgarden, Outkast, and the White Stripes — but some huge names from the ballot didn’t make it, most notably Mariah Carey (for the third time!), Oasis, and Phish.
Carey is an undisputed pop legend; Oasis recorded some of the greatest songs of the Nineties and are about to embark on the most-anticipated reunion tour in years; Phish are, well, Phish, a band that’s created a universe of its own, playing arenas decades into their career. So what happened?...

Wolfgang Van Halen has revealed that he used his late father Eddie Van Halen‘s iconic Frankenstein guitar, aka the Frankenstrat, to record parts on his new Mammoth song “The End.”
The intro to Wolfgang’s one-off single sounds eerily reminiscent to Eddie’s guitar tapping — one of his signature techniques — as heard on Van Halen hits like “Hot for Teacher.” Not only does Wolfgang emulate that tapping perfectly, but he even used Eddie’s legendary red-and-white striped axe to evoke his father’s tone and sound.

David Lee Roth played his first full concert in five years at the M3 Rock Festival in Columbia, Maryland, on Saturday night (May 3rd). The singer performed a 16-song set consisting entirely of Van Halen classics with his solo band. Update: Roth has announced a US tour taking place this summer.
Diamond Dave’s previous full show took place opening for Kiss on March 10th, 2020, just a few days before the pandemic shut down the concert industry. Since then, Dlr canceled a planned Las Vegas residency and seemingly retired from the stage before playing a couple of mini-sets at corporate gigs.

A reunion of the 1996 vampire action film From Dusk Till Dawn has happened, but it isn't for a sequel or a reboot. Instead, director Robert Rodriguez decided to listen to a fan's request and revisit the horror universe that introduced us to Santánico Pandemonium. How exactly? Through a music video that'll leave you wanting more of Rodriguez's unique approach to the vampire genre.
The music video is "The End," by heavy metal band Mammoth. Band leader Wolfgang Van Halen, the son of guitar legend Eddie, stars in the video where the band arrives at a shady bar where their tunes aren't exactly welcome. We'll skip a few of the details that may give you an idea that the bar is just a branch of From Dusk Till Dawn's T*tty Twister.

Sammy Hagar’s The Best of All Worlds Las Vegas residency kicked off Wednesday night at the Park MGM. The Red Rocker and his band, which includes guitarist Joe Satriani, bassist Michael Anthony, drummer Kenny Aronoff, and keyboardist Rai Thistlethwayte, stuck largely to the setlist they brought around to North American amphitheaters last summer, with some very notable surprises.
The first one took place at the top of the show, when they opened with “Encore, Thank You, Goodnight,” the brand-new song that Hagar claimed he wrote with Eddie Van Halen in a dream.

Wolfgang Van Halen‘s Mammoth have released a new song, “The End,” along with a star-studded Robert Rodriguez-directed video featuring Danny Trejo, Slash, and more.
“The End” marks the first new music from Wolfgang since he dropped his initials from the Mammoth Wvh moniker, and it’s a ripper, opening with a shreddy tapping solo that echoes the guitar theatrics of Wolfgang’s late father, the legendary Eddie Van Halen. Performed by Wolfgang and returning collaborator Michael “Elvis” Baskette, the track balances fast-paced verses sections with a hyper melodic chorus that showcases Wolfgang’s vocals.

Think about it, The Cure got to battle Mecha-Streisand, Korn were depicted as Scooby-Doo-like paranormal mystery investigators and Radiohead briefly popped by to mock a crying teenager as he’s mourning his dead parents after being tricked into cannibalizing them. And then there was the time that Van Halen helped usher in a new era of world peace.
Apparently, Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s admiration for singer David Lee Roth once extended so far as to taking a pitch meeting with him. As Bill Hader recently revealed on the Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend podcast, when the SNL alum was working as a writer on South Park, Roth pitched Parker and Stone “a movie where...

Sammy Hagar has released a new single titled “Encore, Thank You, Goodnight.” that he says was inspired by a dream he had about his late Van Halen bandmate Eddie Van Halen.
The track features Hagar’s all-star band of Joe Satriani on guitar, Michael Anthony on bass, and Kenny Aronoff on drums. The Red Rocker goes so far as to say that Eddie Van Halen presented him the song in the dream.

“This song is my final bow to that part of my life,” stated Hagar. “It’s not meant to be anything more than a thank-you — with love, with respect, and with one hell of a guitar solo.”
He added, “Joe was the perfect partner to help me shape the sound — he brought in that big, emotional, guitar-driven energy that feels like Eddie’s spirit but is entirely of Joe’s creation. With Michael...

About a year after Eddie Van Halen died in 2020, Sammy Hagar had a dream that they were sharing a chill moment together. “He had a guitar around his neck and we were having a love fest since we hadn’t seen each other in a long time,” Hagar tells Rolling Stone. “And he just started playing this riff, and I started singing.”
It took several years, but Hagar ultimately finished the song, which he wound up calling “Encore, Thank You, Goodnight,” with help from guitarist Joe Satriani, Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony,...

In November, just after the election from hell, I became a metalhead. It was an accident, but it’s too late to reverse course now. Before saying more about that, I want to step back in time. By about 60 years.
During most of those years, I was good at keeping up with the currency of popular music. Come the early 1970s, keeping current with the currency would become my vocation, when I took up music journalism.

How does a truly terrible song end up an otherwise flawless album? Blame ego-appeasing band-politics concessions, drug-fueled studio experiments, songwriters working through a few too many personal demons, and artists who just ran out of songwriting steam a little too soon. Or maybe it all comes down to bad judgment.
In any case, Rolling Stone‘s Andy Greene recently found 50 examples of classic albums with at least one bad song, and he goes through his entire list with host Brian Hiatt on the new episode of Rolling Stone Music Now.

The family of Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Roy Orbison — known for hits like “Oh, Pretty Woman,” “Crying,” “Only the Lonely” and “In Dreams” — has partnered with the independent production and financing company Compelling Pictures to develop both a theatrical feature film and long-form documentary based on singer-songwriter’s life and career.
Tentatively titled “You Got It,” after Orbison’s 1988 hit single, the film will be “a romance more than a traditional biopic,” according to the announcement, focusing on Orbison’s relationship with his wife Barbara, who became his manager and played a key role in his comeback, which took place in the years just before his death at the age of just 52 December of 1988. Barbara Orbison died in 2011.

David Edward Byrd, who created psychedelic posters for Jimi Hendrix, The Who and Grateful Dead shows and for such Broadway productions as Follies, Godspell, Jesus Christ Superstar and Little Shop of Horrors, has died. He was 83.
Byrd died Monday at a hospital in Albuquerque, New Mexico, rep Jerry Digney announced. Jolino Beserra, his partner of 40 years, said on Facebook that he died of pneumonia.
One of the foremost graphic artists of 20th century pop culture, Byrd did lots of work for rock promoter Bill Graham’s Fillmore East, which opened in the East Village in Manhattan in 1968, and designed a poster for the original Woodstock festival (it turned out it wasn’t used when the event was moved).

David Edward Byrd, an artist whose swirling, psychedelic, instantly entrancing illustrations gave the rock mecca Fillmore East its signature look and contributed at least two of the greatest, most recognizable posters in modern Broadway history for two beloved productions, Follies and Godspell, died Monday, February 3, at a hospital in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He was 83.
His husband, the artist Jolino Beserra, announced on social media. In a recent Facebook post, Beserra described Byrd’s failing health as the poster artist struggled with heart and lung problems, pneumonia and the effects of two bouts with Covid.
Born April 4, 1941, in Tennessee but raised in Miami Beach, Florida, Byrd studied painting and design at Carnegie-Mellon University in the mid-1960s, and from 1970 to 1979 taught at New York’s Pratt Institute.

America’s Sweetheart, Ari Shaffir’s new Netflix stand-up special, bears a title that flies in the face of the hilariously edgy jokes you’ll hear during the comic’s latest hour. “I’m a big troll,” Shaffir laughed as he explained the special’s ironic name. “I like to rile people up. Rhino has unveiled a new David Lee Roth box set, The Warner Recordings 1985-1994, arriving on vinyl and CD on February 21st.
The 5-lp and 5-cd box sets house Roth’s solo recordings following his exit from Van Halen in 1985, beginning with the Crazy from the Heat EP and its hit song “Just a Gigolo.”
Dlr followed that up with the successful Eat ‘Em and Smile LP in 1986, featuring Roth teamed up with an all-star backing band featuring bassist Billy Sheehan, drummer Gregg Bissonette, and guitar virtuoso Steve Vai. Roth then went on to release three more LPs on Warner including 1988’s Skyscraper, 1991’s A Little Ain’t Enough, and 1994’s Your Filthy Little Mouth.
Of note for collectors, the upcoming vinyl box set will contain the first-ever repressing of Your Filthy Little Mouth, which was only released on vinyl in Germany in 1994, making it a scarce and pricey original pressing.
