  • Off stage, Leslie is a founding member of the BRAVO Chapter/City of Hope - a charitable organisation dedicated to the study, treatment and eradication of all blood-related diseases.
  • She made her national television debut at age six on the television series Beulah (1950), portraying the niece of Ethel Waters.
  • Although John Amos and Madge Sinclair were only three and five years her senior in real life, they played her parents in Racines (1977). Similarly, she is only three years older than her on-screen son Ben Vereen and four months older than her on-screen grandson Georg Stanford Brown in the same production.

  • In 1968, Leslie Uggams and Patricia Routledge tied for the Tony for Lead Actress in a Musical. Leslie won for "Hallelujah, Baby!" and Patricia won for "Darling of the Day". Theirs was the fifth of ten ties in Tony history.
