Everything You Need To Know About Netflix’s A Widow’s Game
Veuve noire (2025)
Netflix’s 2025 crime drama A Widow’s Game dives deep into one of Spain’s most shocking real-life murder cases—known as the Patraix case. The film is directed by Carlos Sedes, known for his work on crime thrillers like Now and Then and Fariña. The movie is more than just another crime thriller. It’s a sharp, procedural story about control, deceit, and how love can become a weapon. The film doesn’t glamorize the crime—it unpacks how people believe what they want to believe, and how that can destroy lives.

In this article, we explore what the film is about, the real events behind it, the cast and characters, where it was shot, and how Netflix reimagines this true story for the screen.

What is A Widow’s Game About?

The movie follows the story of María Jesús Moreno Cantó—nicknamed “Maje”—a woman who orchestrated the murder of her husband,...

A Widow’s Game Cast And Characters Guide
Image
Netflix has aced the true crime subgenre for a long while now, and the recently released movie, A Widow’s Game, is another testament to the fact. Based on the investigation of the brutal murder of Engineer Antonio Mario Cerdan in Patraix, Valencia, orchestrated by his wife, Maria Jesus Moreno—dubbed by the media as the infamous Black Widow of Patraix—the movie mixes up sensational real-life accounts of the crime with fictional details to make for a riveting experience. Charting the intricacies of love, lust, lies, and betrayal, the narrative successfully represents the incident with as much authenticity as one can expect, and a solid cast is one of the major reasons behind that.

Maje, played by Ivana Baquero Macias

Spanish actor Ivana Baquero Macias gained recognition through her performance as lead Princess Moanna/Ofelia in Guillermo del Toro’s iconic Pan’s Labyrinth and later also starred in the high fantasy series The Shannara Chronicles.

A Widow’s Game Review: Three Perspectives on a Dark Deed
Image
A Widow’s Game draws its chilling narrative from the fertile ground of Spanish true crime, specifically the 2017 murder of Antonio Navarro Cerdán in Valencia. The film opens onto this grim reality: a man slain in the mundane anonymity of a parking garage, an act of stark violence that immediately propels the narrative into a somber register.

At the vortex of the ensuing investigation stands María Jesús Moreno Canto, or Maje, the victim’s young widow. Her public displays of sorrow are immediate and pronounced, yet an unsettling current runs beneath the surface of her bereavement, a subtle dissonance that hints at far more intricate and perhaps disquieting truths.

This cinematic retelling positions itself not merely as a reconstruction of events, but as an inquiry into the obscured contours of the personalities enmeshed in the tragedy, inviting the audience into a labyrinth of unfolding revelations.

A Prism of Perspectives

The Fate of Netflix’s Ambitious Spanish Period Drama Has Been Decided After 87% Rotten Tomatoes Season 1
Image
The Lady’s Companion debuted on Netflix only two months ago, and its future has finally been decided, though it's not looking so good. Local reports via What’s on Netflix suggest that the comedy-drama won’t return for a sophomore season despite earning favorable reviews after its release. However, rumors have circulated that the show has been renewed for another run, contradicting news of its cancellation. Meanwhile, Netflix Spain has confirmed that the renewal never happened, thereby quenching any hopes of a Season 2.

Created by María José Rustarazo and Gema R. Neira of Cable Girls, The Lady’s Companion, also known as Manual para Señoritas in Spanish-speaking regions, premiered on Netflix on March 28 with all eight episodes. The period drama is set in Madrid in 1880 and follows Elena Bianda, the city’s most sought-after, morally rigorous lady-in-waiting, who must navigate her greatest challenge yet when she’s tasked with guiding three...

‘Romería’ Review: Carla Simón Dives Deep Into Painful Family History in an Act of Reclamation That’s Equal Parts Shimmering and Meandering
Image
Three years after taking top honors in Berlin with her elegiac tribute to the generations of peach farmers in her family, Alcarràs, Carla Simón returns to territory more directly connected to her own past, a companion piece to her debut, Summer 1993. That 2018 film explored a transitional period in the life of a six-year-old girl — a fictionalized version of the director — sent to live with an uncle’s family in the Catalonia countryside after losing both her parents to AIDS. Simón’s third feature, Romería, centers on another semi-autobiographical stand-in, this time a budding filmmaker fresh out of high school, who travels to meet the family of her late father.

Her journey, while essentially planned to complete bureaucratic requirements on a film school scholarship, becomes an exhumation of the parents she was too young to know, their histories veiled in secrecy, shame and the blurry lens of time. That lens...

Romería Review: When Home Feels Always Just Out of Reach
Image
“Romería,” directed by Carla Simón and released in 2025, unfolds along Spain’s storm-lashed Atlantic coast, chiefly in Vigo and the nearby Cíes Islands. Set in the summer of 2004, the film follows 18-year-old Marina (Llúcia Garcia), a Barcelona-raised orphan who travels north to secure a notarized declaration of her paternal lineage for a university scholarship. Rather than a conventional drama about paperwork, the story hinges on Marina’s quest for connection and her confrontation with a family that has kept her at arm’s length.

Simón structures the narrative around Marina’s own camcorder footage—grainy, intimate recordings that punctuate scenes of polite distance and whispered confidences—and the voice-over readings of her late mother’s diary. These two devices serve as parallel registers: one reflects Marina’s present search for identity, the other excavates her parents’ youthful romance and tragic decline. Through sun-dappled exteriors and hushed interior conversations, the film...

Cannes Review: Carla Simón’s Romería is a Personal Tale of Intergenerational Dissonance
Image
Continuing in the low-key register of her Golden Bear winner Alcarràs, Carla Simón returns with Romería, another tale of intergenerational dissonance. A film about the stories families choose to tell and the ones they bury deep inside, it unfurls on Spain’s Atlantic coast, where 18-year-old orphan Marina (Llúcia Garcia) hopes to reunite with her paternal family. It’s also a story about displacement and yearning for lost roots, themes that cut close to the bone for a director whose parents died of AIDS when she was still a child, and who reunited with her father’s family in the town of Vigo, Galicia, where the film is set, at the same age. Simón has always been an autobiographical filmmaker; Romería might be her most personal work yet.

The story takes place over five days in 2004, with a lengthy flashback to 1983 in its second half. Marina, a budding filmmaker, is...

‘Romería’ Review: A Budding Filmmaker Pursues Her Parents’ Obscured Past in Carla Simón’s Lovely, Pensive Coastal Voyage
Image
“Romería” is the Spanish word for pilgrimage, ostensibly a clear and apt title for the third feature by writer-director Carla Simón. Based on travels the filmmaker herself undertook as a teenager to meet an extended family she had never known, this is a kind of road movie by sea, journeying in pursuit of some sense of self-completion. Yet as the film wends its way through the narrow streets, harbors and glittering waters of Spain’s salty Galician coastline, immersing itself in chaotic gatherings of family and community, the title’s spiritual aspect takes on a rueful irony. There’s no holy destination or revelation here, and certainly no warm sense of homecoming — though in finding where she doesn’t belong, Simón’s fictional alter ego can at last make sense of her own fragmented childhood memories, and those she’s retrieved from her late biological parents.

After the expansive sociological...

The six-episode web series is based on a real-life incident that created a stir in Spain in 2013. It can be christened an intriguing miniseries, and the style and the pacing are engineered to heighten our curiosity. But beyond the pale of integrity and intentions,...
