Directed by Renny Harlin from a screenplay by Duncan Kennedy, Donna Powers, and Wayne Powers, Deep Blue Sea has the following synopsis: On an island research facility, Dr. Susan McAlester is harvesting the brain tissue of DNA-altered sharks as a possible cure for Alzheimer’s disease. When the facility’s backers send an executive to investigate the experiments, a routine procedure goes awry and a shark starts attacking the researchers. The Sopranos has no shortage of serious, tough scenes that ask a lot from the actors in terms of emotions and physicality, with some shot over 12 takes. Michael Imperioli, who played Christopher in The Sopranos, has always been open about what shooting the acclaimed TV show was like and how there were unexpected challenges.
He recently cited the funeral scene after Livia Soprano's death as one of these surprising moments. Nancy Marchand played Livia on The Sopranos in the early seasons, but since the actress passed away while filming the show, the writers had to write Livia out. This resulted in enormous emotional upheaval for Tony (James Gandolfini) as a character, and a challenge for the cast.
Despite the seriousness of the scene, the ensemble couldn't help cracking up at inopportune moments, forcing them to restart the take and laugh all over again. This line between humor and sadness is...

James Gandolfini only had a few minor film credits and only two television credits (one in a made-for-tv movie), before snagging the role of Tony Soprano in The Sopranos. An actor with no major roles rarely hits the jackpot with a starring role on television. However, Gandolfini beat the odds and became one of the most recognizable faces on the small screen from 1999-2007. Yet, it took some convincing before The Sopranos creator, David Chase, knew he'd found the series' leading guy. It stands out that Chase acknowledged that the actor wasn't lacking in the talent category; it was all about whether he was "threatening enough."
When Gandolfini's agent contacted the creator, he watched the actor's reel, and called the agent back with one concern. Coming courtesy of Vulture, Chase said:
"I think he's brilliant. I have one concern, and that is, 'Is he threatening enough?'"

James Gandolfini wasn’t well known when he landed the part of Tony Soprano on the HBO series “The Sopranos,” and the show’s creator David Chase wasn’t completely sold on the casting when the actor’s agent contacted him. After Chase watched the actor’s reel, he called back and asked, “I think he’s brilliant. I have one concern, and that is, Is he threatening enough?”
“David, if your only concern is is he threatening enough,” Nancy Sanders replied. “If you said to me, ‘He’s a little chubby,’ or ‘He’s losing his hair,’ I could understand. But he’s threatening enough. This is your guy.”
The conversation was recorded in the new book “Gandolfini: Jim, Tony, and the Life of a Legend,” an excerpt of which was shared by Vulture Friday. “In the movie version of The Sopranos, I thought about Robert De Niro,” Chase also explained.

Grey's Anatomy celebrates its 20th anniversary on March 27, and a ton of faces have come through Seattle Grace's doors the past two decades, but only one series regular has taken home an Emmy: Katherine Heigl.
The erstwhile Dr. Izzie Stevens won Best Drama Supporting Actress in 2007 in a shocking upset. No one expected her to prevail — "Sh-t," Heigl said after her name was announced — not even her mother. "My own mother told me I didn't have a shot in hell of winning tonight, so I really don't have anything prepared. This is my dream come true," she said onstage.
Heigl beat fellow Grey's docs Sandra Oh and Chandra Wilson, The Sopranos' Lorraine Bracco and Aida Turturro, and Brothers and Sisters' Rachel Griffiths. Pundits favored Oh or Wilson for the win, especially the former, who was on her third of five straight nominations for the ABC medical drama, and had won...

James Gandolfini left behind a stellar legacy in the form of The Sopranos, before his untimely demise in 2013. The life of the show, Gandolfini starred as Tony Soprano opposite Eddie Falco, who took on the role of Edie Falco.

James Gandolfini’s performance as Tony Soprano is easily one of the most impressive and intense TV arcs ever seen. The sheer intensity and range that Gandolfini offered during the show’s six-season run made The Sopranos one of the most popular series of all time.

However, behind the scenes, the intensity sometimes led to real-life confrontations. One such moment occurred between Gandolfini and his on-screen sister, Aida Turturro, during an emotional scene that blurred the lines between fiction and reality.

The 1990s saw a lot of action movies come and go, some of which were better than others. Big stars like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis dominated the theaters, and they had projects green-lit by name recognition alone. However, just because one high-octane film does well, it doesn't guarantee that another will resonate as well with audiences. Many movies come out with high hopes and prolific marketing, but the pay-off isn't quite what studios are expecting.
Many different metrics go into measuring a film's success. If the budget is high, the box office takings need to cover and even exceed it in order not to be considered a failure. The caliber of actors involved also has bearing. A lesser-known ensemble won't have as many expectations as a tried and tested cast with previous blockbusters. Explosive action films are typically projected to earn more than less popular genres, too. However, some...

A gripping crime thriller series, The Blacklist is full of twists and turns, including Heddie Hawkins' faked death in season 9. For 10 seasons, NBC's The Blacklist chronicled the adventures of Red Reddington (James Spader), a criminal mastermind turned FBI informant who used his intellect and experience to help take down lawbreakers just like him. Spader plays up Red's complexities he can be cold and ruthless, but when he lets someone in, his loyalty and compassion know no bounds. One such person he got close to is Heddie Hawkins (Aida Turturro).
Heddie is introduced in The Blacklist season 5, episode 1, "Smokey Putnam". She worked as an accountant on the carnival circuit, and alongside her boss, the titular Smokey, embezzled $2 million. Heddie takes a deal for a lighter sentence in exchange for testifying against Smokey, but Red has other plans for her. He offers Heddie 2% of his business if she'll help launder his money,...

2024 marks the 25th anniversary of the release of the Renny Harlin shark thriller Deep Blue Sea (watch it Here) – and all these years later, one of the film’s stars is still waiting to have a rematch with the genetically engineered mako sharks at the heart of the story. That actor is LL Cool J, whose character Sherman “Preacher” Dudley was originally supposed to die in the movie (and LL Cool J has said that he nearly died for real during filming), but Harlin decided Preacher should be one of the few people to make it all the way to the end credits, which then had an LL Cool J song playing over them.

Those of us enamored with shark horror generally accept Jaws as the unrivaled king.
Steven Spielberg’s 1975 classic not only perfects the art of underwater suspense, it expertly blends high seas adventure with family drama and genuine dread. But Spielberg’s masterpiece fails to answer one glaring question: what if sharks were super smart? That’s the premise of Renny Harlin’s 1999 film Deep Blue Sea, a sharksploitation crowd-pleaser that succeeds by fully committing to its outlandish bit. The story follows the crew of Aquatica, a doomed ocean research center torn apart by three massive – and massively intelligent – mako sharks. With all the trappings of 90s slasher fun, the film merges Jaws and Spielberg’s other man vs. nature classic Jurassic Park for an aquatic horror blockbuster that’s aging like a fine blood-red wine spilling into the ocean.

This year we, as horror fans, are going to be gifted with a film from director Oz Perkins. That movie is Longlegs and stars Maika Monroe as well as the fascinating actor Nicolas Cage. As anyone may know, Cage has starred in many different types of films, especially horror, and here, he stars as a serial killer who gives off some very Ghepetto-esque vibes. Regardless, we here at JoBlo will be there opening day for the film. As stated a minute ago, we recognize that Cage is vast in various types of genres…but this wasn’t his first dip in the pool of horror. Today on Horror Revisited, we are exploring Martin Scorsese’s underrated film Bringing Out the Dead (watch it Here), which stars Nicolas Cage in one of his most honest, endearing and albeit best roles. So, turn on the sirens, strap in and let’s tour...

The Sopranos characters, including Tony Soprano, are not as tall as fans might think, with most male cast members standing around 5'7'' to 5'9''. James Gandolfini, who played Tony, was just under 6'1'', making him one of the tallest cast members alongside Steve Schirripa and Federico Castelluccio. Female cast members like Jamie Lynn Sigler and Aida Turturro are on the shorter side, with heights ranging from 5'3'' to 5'6'', showcasing the diverse range of heights on the show.

Officially, Prime Video’s spy drama Mr. and Mrs. Smith is based on the 2005 film of the same name. Unofficially, however, its origins are a bit murkier. Though this 2024 streaming iteration of Mr. and Mrs. Smith starring Donald Glover and Maya Erskine shares its basic premise with the previous Brad Pitt and Angelina-starring version (a married couple who also happen to be spies), the series diverges from it in some major ways as well.
In an interview with The Today Show, Glover (who also co-created the 2024 series) even admitted to not having seen the 2005 Doug Liman-directed film when he decided to embark upon the project. Co-creator Francesca Sloane wrote in an open letter to fans that “No one would need a show that retold the same blockbuster movie. But what we set out to do was to make something wholly original.”

But the interview also branches out with mentions of other Harlin projects, including the 1999 shark thriller Deep Blue Sea (watch it Here), which celebrates its 25th anniversary this year. During his conversation with JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray, Harlin revealed that Samuel L. Harlin said, “The whole scene has its roots in the fact that I had done Long Kiss Goodnight with Sam, and we sort of made a pact that we would always work together as often as we can. So then Deep Blue Sea came up and Sam called me and he’s like,...

The Sopranos cast recently reunited for a 25th anniversary "family dinner" celebration, marking a rare and possibly final gathering. The photos capture the reunion, featuring notable cast members like Steve Buscemi and Michael Gandolfini, as well as the series creator and other beloved characters. The celebration also includes behind-the-scenes content, a Sopranos-themed dinner at Da Nico, and a special 25th-anniversary podcast hosted by Jamie-Lynn Sigler and Robert Iler.
The Sopranos cast reunites for the 25th anniversary in new photos. Premiered in 1999, the acclaimed HBO series follows the angst-ridden New Jersey mob boss, Tony Soprano, as he balances his work and family life, with the cast led by the late James Gandolfini, Edie Falco, Michael Imperiloi, Steven Van Zandt, Robert Iler, Tony Sirico, Jamie-Lynn Sigler, and Lorraine Bracco. The classic show “The Sopranos” began its life on HBO on January 10, 1999, single handedly launching the Golden Age of Cable Drama. It’s difficult to recall now, but when the show premiered, HBO was not yet HBO, and original programming outside of network primetime was still in its infancy. Creator David Chase crafted a series at once dark and comedic, violent and emotionally vibrant. It introduced the world to entertainment’s ultimate antihero in Italian-American mob boss Tony Soprano, played with power, pathos and perturbation by James Gandolfini. Beset by depression and panic attacks, he showed us what “The Godfather” never did: a gangster in therapy, regularly visiting the office of New Jersey psychotherapist Dr. Jennifer Melfi (Lorraine Bracco) to download his many troubles and come to terms with a toxic mother Livia (Nancy Marchand). Tony’s long-suffering wife Carmela (pitch-perfect work from Edie Falco) and precocious daughter Meadow (Jamie-Lynn Sigler) completed his female-surrounding quartet.

When former co-stars come together for a new television show, the excitement lies in observing the chemistry forged in their prior collaborations. Some may continue complementing each other in familiar flows as if no time has passed, while others take advantage of looser story constraints to push their work in unexpected directions. Reuniting co-stars promises entertainment and insights available only to those with fond memories of seeing that pair’s inaugural magic unfold.

Janice Soprano was a despicable character who would go to desperate lengths to get what she wanted, even if it meant risking someone's life. Despite showing some care towards her family, Janice always looked out for herself, often pursuing easy money and betraying those around her. Janice's actions played a role in the downfall of Tony Soprano, and her inclusion in the show contributed to its success, as her character was unforgettable and unique.
Even though Janice Soprano wasn't necessarily the worst character on The Sopranos, she showed through her actions that she was still a pretty despicable person through and through. A con artist who was always looking for an easy buck and the easy way out, Janice was willing to go the lowest of lows to get what she wanted, even if it came at the expense of someone's life. Now granted, not everything she did on the show was outright bad.

2024 will mark the 25th anniversary of the release of the Renny Harlin shark thriller Deep Blue Sea (watch it Here) – and some fans feel the best way for distributor Warner Bros. to celebrate would be to release the film’s original ending. There’s a petition to let Warner Bros. know there’s interest in this idea, and the campaign has not only earned a show of support from the film’s star Thomas Jane (who said it would be “kinda fun” to see if fans can get the studio’s attention), but even a financial contribution from Harlin, who felt his contribution might help with the legitimacy of this fan movement.
Directed by Harlin from a screenplay by Duncan Kennedy, Donna Powers, and Wayne Powers, Deep Blue Sea has the following synopsis: On an island research facility, Dr. Susan McAlester is harvesting the brain tissue of DNA-altered sharks as...

Everyone who worked with James Gandolfini on the cast of "The Sopranos" sings his praises loudly and proudly. The generous and charming actor became friendly with just about everyone on the show, but even he got into arguments with his co-stars from time to time. The show involved a lot of intense back-and-forth, but perhaps no one butted heads with Gandolfini's character Tony as much as his sister Janice. As it turns out, the actress who played Janice, Aida Turturro, liked to push Gandolfini's buttons in real life, too.
"I knew him from 1992 and we used to fight back then, not really fight, but we were like husband and wife," Turturro told the New York Post. "I fell in love with him the first time we met; I felt like we were kindred spirits. I was like, 'Listen, you're not the boss of me, mister!' and I used to drive him crazy.

As The Blacklist heads to Season 9’s finale, Red Reddington (James Spader) is getting more and more desperate to uncover the real mastermind behind the murder of his beloved Liz Keen (Megan Boone), a former FBI Task Force agent and the framing of the longtime unit’s chief Harold Cooper (Harry Lennix). After many misleads, a number of dead bodies, and the uncovering of some involved in the crimes — the international criminal mastermind and FBI asset has finally come to realize that the person behind it all, is someone close to him, someone in his vast organization less than savory types. In the above exclusive sneak peek of the May 13 episode, we see Red coldly interrogate his longtime accountant (and skilled embezzler) Heddie Hawkins (Aida Turturro), who absolutely protests her innocence of Liz’s murder. One of the more unique aspects of "The Sopranos" was the way it killed off its major characters. Season 2 featured its main antagonistic figure Richie Aprile (David Proval) being taken down not by any of the main gangsters, but by a spur-of-the-moment decision made by his fiancée, Janice (Aida Turturro). Season 4 showed Ralph (Joe Pantoliano) getting killed halfway through the episode out of retaliation for suspicion of him killing a horse. It would've been more expected for Ralph to get whacked back in season 3 when he was acting like a full liability to the crew; instead he's killed after he's mellowed out...

There are a whole lot of cigarettes in “Call Jane,” a detail — along with flip bob hairstyles and polyester pantsuits — that demonstrates director Phyllis Nagy’s commitment to the late-’60s period, even as it shows that the movie isn’t trying to tell women what to do with their bodies. Inspired by true events, this Sundance-blessed abortion drama takes place more than 50 years ago, but it could hardly be more timely today, as the Supreme Court considers several cases with the potential to roll back the freedoms granted by Roe v. Wade. Set in 1968, half a decade before that decision, the movie tells the story of the Chicago-based network of activists who called themselves the Jane Collective — a clandestine group of women committed to helping other women find a safe way to get illegal abortions. As the tagline goes, “You’ve come a long way, baby.”

Phyllis Nagy’s screenplays have brought her many accolades, including an Oscar nom for “Carol.” The writer, who also teaches at UCLA, brings her second directorial effort, “Call Jane,” to AFM. The film, which stars Elizabeth Banks, Sigourney Weaver, Kate Mara and Chris Messina, is set in the 1960s and follows Joy (Banks) whose pregnancy is tainted by the threat it poses to her own life. She has nowhere to turn until she stumbles upon the Janes, an underground group of women united by Virginia (Sigourney Weaver), who risk everything to provide people like Joy with choices. Hayley Schore and Roshan Sethi wrote the script. Nagy talked to Variety about the film.
The topic has always been timely, but now especially, women’s reproductive rights are under assault on many fronts.
When I became involved with this, it wasn’t that timely. I mean, in this country, such things are always a little bit timely,...

In the opening scenes of Alan Taylor’s “The Many Saints of Newark,” Christopher Moltisanti’s ghost rises from the concrete of Pier 49 to follow his father, Dickie Moltisanti (Alessandro Nivola), and eight-year-old Tony Soprano (William Ludwig). Young Tony skips through the sharply dressed ‘60s-era crowd, play-fighting with his Uncle Dickie. The piercing cry of three seagulls sweeps across the pier. Young Tony smiles. And the disembodied voice of Christopher describes how, 40 years from now, this grinning kid, his very own Uncle Tony, will murder him.
Nearly all of the stories in “The Sopranos” universe are told by men and boys: The newest is even narrated by a male ghost. Women of “The Sopranos” tend to be preternaturally voiceless, silenced, beaten, or all three, at least when they are not seducing men or complaining. Young girls and daughters experience this misogyny twofold, and “The Many Saints of Newark” carries on...

A-list talent? Over here! When existential mob family drama The Sopranos premiered in 1999, it arguably redefined HBO and the TV landscape as a whole, with James Gandolfini starring as patriarch Tony Soprano, who tries to balance his responsibilities to blood relatives along with the pressures of being part of one of the Five Families. Edie Falco, Jamie Lynn Sigler and Robert Iler made up the New Jersey suburban Soprano family, while Michael Imperioli, Tony Sirico, Steven Van Zandt, Vincent Pastore, Steve Schirripa and Joe Pantoliano rounded out Tony's mob crew. And then there was Tony's sister (Aida Turturro) and cousin (Steve...

It’s time for the punks to meet the godfathers. The creators of SopranosCon merged with MobMovieCon for a family celebration. From July 23 to July 25, Harrah’s Resort & Casino in Atlantic City will house the boardwalk’s biggest gangster gathering since Nucky Johnson hosted the mob’s Atlantic City Conference in 1929.
“Al Capone will not be coming though,” VirtualCons CEO Michael Mota tells Den of Geek. “Those were the mobsters. I would say this would be the biggest gathering of mobster wannabes.” The Sopranos fan convention has come a long way since it was dreamed up by three gangster movie aficionados from New York, Maryland, and Rhode Island. The 2019 SopranosCon drew thousands of fans from as far as The Netherlands and the United Kingdom to the Meadowlands Exposition Center in Secaucus. A planned expansion to MobMovieCon had to be pushed back because of the pandemic, but the organizers introduced VirtualCons...
