How Matthew Perry’s Life and Death Is Explored in Peacock Doc ‘A Hollywood Tragedy’
Image
Matthew Perry’s life, his tragic 2023 death, and the investigation into the ring of physicians and drug dealers accused of being responsible for his ketamine overdose at his Southern California home is all explored in a new documentary. Peacock’s Matthew Perry: A Hollywood Tragedy, now streaming, veers between probing the investigation into his death and delivering a sentimental remembrance of the beloved star of sitcom juggernaut Friends.

In the opening of the documentary, directed by Robert Palumbo for ITN Productions, the story of Perry’s childhood in Ottawa, Canada, is shown in still images as The Hollywood Reporter contributor Deborah Wilker, who was interviewed for the film, explains aspects of his early life — that his mother worked in the press office of Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau and how his dad’s work as a model and actor (at one point, he was the “Old Spice guy”) drew him toward acting.

What Happened to Justin Trudeau?
Image
Outside Rideau Cottage in Ottawa, a gust of wind blew away Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s notes Monday. It was moments before he was to announce his resignation as head of the Liberal Party and his exit from the Pm’s office after nine years in power. It was a too easy metaphor of how Trudeau’s hopes for an enlightened new Canada — a counterbalance to Donald Trump’s America — cut and run as only dreams can.

I wrote about Trudeau for a Rolling Stone cover story in 2017 in...

Justin Trudeau Resigns As Canadian Prime Minister
Image
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is stepping down after nearly a decade in charge.

During a hastily-assembled news conference outside his Rideau Cottage in Ottawa, Trudeau said there will now be fresh Liberal Party leadership elections and parliament will be prorogued until March 24. He said he advised the Canadian governor general this morning of his decision.

Speculation has been swirling in the past few days that the announcement was incoming, although many didn’t expect Trudeau to resign this early.

Trudeau said that “despite the best efforts to work through it, parliament has been paralyzed for months after what has been the longest session of minority parliament in Canadian history.”

He spoke of reflecting over the holidays on his position and told the press pack he was explaining to them a decision that he had told his kids about over dinner last night. “This country deserves real choice in the...

With two low-budget horror movies, Bob Clark captured the anxieties of 1974
Image
In 1974—the year Richard Nixon resigned in the wake of Watergate, and just one year after the United States withdrew from the Vietnam War, having wasted 19 years, five months, four weeks, one day, and nearly 60,000 American lives—confidence in and trust of the United States government was in a shambles.

‘Rumours’ Review: Guy Maddin’s Lightly Surreal and Wildly Funny Satire of Political Ineptitude
Image
The strangest thing about Guy Maddin’s Rumours, co-directed with frequent collaborators Evan Johnson and Galen Johnson, might just be how relatively ordinary it feels. Eschewing the primitive style for which the Winnipeg filmmaker developed a following, as well as the nesting-doll structure of The Forbidden Room, his latest stages its genre-inflected political satire—one that’s equal parts Luis Buñuel and John Carpenter—in a surprisingly straightforward fashion. Maybe that’s because, despite still featuring a host of odd sights like a giant glowing brain in the woods, the film’s timely subject matter and heightened and portentous atmosphere reflects reality in an all too down-to-earth manner.

Rumours is set at a G7 summit, that oft-protested gathering of leaders of some of the world’s wealthiest democracies, during which they put on a show of global unity, if nothing else, given the summit’s lack of verifiable, concrete, real-life outcomes.

Deadpool & Wolverine's Nicepool Credit Explained: Who Is Gordon Reynolds?
Image
"Deadpool & Wolverine" brings roughly 100 different variants of the Merc with a Mouth to the big screen. Referred to as the Deadpool Corps., an army of multiverse Deadpool variants enter Earth-10005, prepared to attack Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) and Logan (Hugh Jackman). While you might expect many of them to be played by Reynolds himself, there's actually only one version played by the star of "Green Lantern."

Yes, even though Reynolds originally lent his voice to the western Deadpool variant known as Cowboypool (a role that eventually went to Matthew McConaughey), and his wife Blake Lively and their children played the likes of Ladypool, Kidpool, and Babypool, Reynolds' only additional role was the unmasked mercenary referred to as Nicepool. However, the end credits name another actor in that role instead, one that should be familiar to Ryan Reynolds fans.

The role of Nicepool -- a Deadpool variant with an unburnt face,...

Barbra Streisand Didn’t Want to Write About Past Relationships in New Memoir
Image
With her new memoir My Name Is Barbra, Barbra Streisand says she hopes readers will finally “know the truth” about her.

“One of the reasons I wrote the book is to talk about the myths about me,” Streisand tells CBS News’ Gayle King in an interview that aired on CBS Sunday Morning.

Among reflections on her career as a singer, actress and director, Streisand writes about her “past loves and regrets,” as King teased.

But if it was up to Streisand, married to James Brolin for 25 years, there would have been less about her past relationships — including with Don Johnson, Ryan O’Neal, Andre Agassi and former Canadian prime minister Pierre Trudeau — in the book.

“Listen, I didn’t want to write about any of them,” Streisand says. “[But] my editor said, ‘You have to leave some blood on the page!'”

After King complimented the Way We Were star on her “very nice dating roster,...

Matthew Perry’s Radical Honesty About His Addiction Battle Helped Us All
Image
Matthew Perry entered his first rehab in 1997, back when the internet was a novelty and phones plugged into a wall. Friends was the king of prime time and Perry its court jester, a floppy-haired virtuoso of sarcasm and comic timing, but his 28-day stint in Hazelden for Vicodin, splashed across gossip rags, told a darker tale, one that would outlast his TV show’s long run. He went back to rehab in 2001 (booze) and then 2003 (Vicodin). In 2011, when he announced that, yes, Matthew Perry was checking in to rehab again,...

Matthew Langford Perry was born in Williamstown, Massachusetts, on August 19th, 1969. Matthew Perry: Professional brilliance shadowed by personal demons
Image
Actor Matthew Perry, who rose to stardom with his portrayal of Chandler Bing in the iconic sitcom ‘Friends’, breathed his last as he died at the age of 54 at his Los Angeles home. His portrayal broke new grounds, and over the years has become a mark of the 1990s.

One of the reasons Perry fits in so well as Chandler is his proximity to the character in some sense. Like Chandler, Perry’s parents too separated when he was an infant.

He grew up in Ottawa, Ontario and stayed with his Canadian mother, who was a journalist and served as press secretary to former Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, the father of the current Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau.

As his mother later married Canadian-born broadcast journalist Keith Morrison, Matthew also lived briefly in Toronto and Montreal.

At the age of 15, Perry moved from Ottawa to Los Angeles to live with his biological father,...

The actor was found unresponsive Saturday at around 4 p.m. in the hot tub at his Los Angeles home. First responding paramedics were unable to revive him. It’s unclear if his death was caused by drowning or cardiac arrest, but there were evidently no drugs found at the scene nor evidence of foul play. Perry had a long and storied history of substance abuse.

Born in Williamstown, Massachusetts on August 19, 1969, Perry was raised in Ottawa, Canada. His mother, Suzanne Morrison, was a journalist and press secretary to Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau. (His stepfather is “Dateline’s” Keith Morrison.) According to media reports, Perry’s body was found in a jacuzzi on the property of his Los Angeles-area home. Drugs were reportedly not found at the scene, and foul play is currently not suspected.

Perry is best known for his role as Chandler. He played the character for all 10 seasons of “Friends” and starred in each of its 234 episodes of the NBC sitcom, and the 2021 reunion special. Wtf Happened to Matthew Perry?
Image
Seasons three through six of Friends had some of Chandler Bing’s funniest and most character-defining moments. There he is handcuffed, without pants, to a filing cabinet; remaining in “time out” in a box for nearly a full episode; hooking up with—and later marrying—Monica…We all remember them fondly. The one who doesn’t? Matthew Perry, who says these seasons were a blur due to his problems with substance abuse.

Wtf Happened to…Matthew Perry?

But to truly understand what the fuck happened to Matthew Perry, we go back to the beginning. And the beginning began when he was born on August 19th in Williamstown, Ma, the son of two prominent people: actor John Bennett Perry and mother Suzanne, who later served as press secretary to Canadian Pm Pierre Trudeau.

Perry developed an interest in acting after he served it up on the tennis court as a youth,...

Whitehead died Friday at a hospital in Arlington, Virginia, his son, Charles Whitehead, told The Hollywood Reporter.

Remembering Margot Kidder: Hollywood Superwoman and Box Office Queen
Image
I’m an ‘80s baby, so I grew up with Margot Kidder as my Lois Lane, even though I’m not sure that I watched those Superman movies until much later in life. But the first time I saw Margot Kidder, the first time I really took her all in, was sometime in the ‘90s, when I watched 1974’s Black Christmas, the Canadian thriller that many consider to be the first true slasher flick.

I loved her from the very first frame.

Even then, at just over 25, Kidder had her own unique charm.

‘The Marijuana Conspiracy’ Review: Research Study Amounts to a Case of Reefer Sadness
Image
For moviegoers accustomed to stoner-dude protagonists, “The Marijuana Conspiracy” offers a nice change. The Canadian drama, set in 1972, is full of Mary Janes. Okay, really just one Mary and one Jane. But they’re joined by other young women who answer a call to participate in a research project. For 98 days, Mary, Janice, Jane, Mourinda and Marissa will be able — more like required — to smoke dope. And they get to imbibe without fear of the fuzz.

Writer-director Craig Pryce adapted the true story of research the Addiction Research Foundation undertook when Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau began considering the decriminalization of recreational cannabis. (Hint: They were not for it.) It was dubbed “Project Marijuana,” but Pryce has renamed it the friskier sounding “Project Venus.”

“The Marijuana Project,” available on demand 4/20 (wink wink), is a mildly buzzy hybrid that swings from serious to light and back again. If the category is dope movies,...

‘The Marijuana Conspiracy’ Plays Like A Feature-Length Canadian Heritage Minute Commercial [Review]
Image
It’s quaint under our current circumstances to think that in the 1970s, the growing acceptance and use of cannabis were considered by conservative politicians as a “pandemic.” That’s at least the word used by John Bradow (Derek McGrath), a stand-in for former Ontario premier John Robarts, as he tries to slow down Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau’s efforts to decriminalize weed decades before it was cool. The result, as detailed in the based on a true story drama “The Marijuana Conspiracy,” saw Bradow throw money at a study he was certain would confirm his belief about the deleterious effects of weed.

Bridget Hoffman in Evil Dead (1981)
Drive-In Dust Offs: Things (1989)
Bridget Hoffman in Evil Dead (1981)
Well, I’ve stared at the unforgiving blankness of my computer screen long enough. I must proceed; there is nowhere to go but onwards, tackling (and trying to grasp) one of the most profound, odd, galaxy brain takes in horror cinema: Things (1989). As nondescript as that title is, the film itself is anything but: there are a million things to discuss in Things, and I’ll try my best to be at least as coherent as the film itself.

Made for around $30,000 Canadian and shot on 8 and 16mm, Things skipped theatrical and caught the tail end of a Dtv boom in the late ‘80s. So yes, I am cheating a bit as it never played in theatres (let alone drive-ins), with patrons unwittingly taking home the box art with the mullet-maligned hoser holding a power drill.

Well, a lot has to do with this one, and often at the same time: mad labs and monsters,...

Though we haven't seen the two together very much, Jessica was spotted landing in London recently, so we can only assume she'll be there to support her friend on her big day. The trio will be joined by Prince George and Princess Charlotte as pageboys and flower girl. So, who is this glamorous brunette (who sort of bears a resemblance to Meghan)? Justin Trudeau Wants to Fight Matthew Perry
2017-04-03T06:44:31-07:00Justin Trudeau Wants to Fight Matthew Perry

The Canadian prime minister has challenged Friends star Matthew Perry to a fight, in a cheek-in-tongue message on Twitter.

Justin Trudeau, a keen boxer, joked on Twitter on April Fool's Day: "I've been giving it some thought, and you know what, who hasn't wanted to punch Chandler? How about a rematch Matthew Perry?"

The athletic Mr Trudeau, who has worked as a bouncer and as a snowboarding instructor before getting into politics, famously "pummelled" Canadian Conservative Patrick Brazeau in a charity boxing match in 2012. A newspaper reported how he “pounded his foe into submission with a series of unschooled but powerful haymakers”.

The actor, who played Chandler in the popular sitcom, gave a different reason than the prime minister's boxing skills as he politely declined the offer: "I think I will pass at your request for...

Prince William and Kate Middleton thrilled Canadian spectators by attending a beautiful celebration for Canada Day on Parliament Hill on July 1 — and they can’t help being lovey-dovey!

Will and Kate, both 29, looked great at the celebration. Will was casual-cool in a coat with his shirt unbuttoned and tieless, making him seem more down-to earth than ever. Per usual, Kate was the main attraction, with a chic purple Issa Jersey dress. She accessorized with her Maple Leaf brooch given to her by Queen Elizabeth, which she had worn earlier in the day. Memo: Short Absence Notice
I haven't regularly posted something on this blog. Indeed, I've got two research projects that are keeping me busy. The first one is about the political ideas of the late Pierre Elliott Trudeau (i.e. his anti-nationalism, his views on federalism and multiculturalism), a former Prime minister of Canada (1968-1979 and 1980-1984), and the second is about the treatment of Canadians of Japanese heritage during the Second World War (1939-1945).

However, if I do have some time (and I'll find some time!), I promise that I'll post something worth your attention. Here are what you should expect: a review of JFK and of the TV series Aveux along with Flashpoint.

Yours friendly,

Queen Elizabeth's naughty giggle
Britain's Queen Elizabeth started laughing when Canada's former Prime Minister accidentally swore. Jean Chretien - who oversaw the country for 10 years from 1993 - has revealed how the British monarch started giggling when he accidently let slip the French expletive "merde", meaning "s**t" during an important ceremony. In 1982, during the signing service of the Constitution Act in Ottawa, Canada, the 75-year-old former politician - who was the justice minister at the time - was almost unable to write his signature. After Elizabeth signed the document with ease, the then Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau snapped off the end of the fountain pen they were using. Mr. Chretien quipped: "I was the third one to sign but Mr. Trudeau had...
