‘A Transparent Musical’ Sets Its Sights on Broadway in 2024
Gaby Hoffmann, Jay Duplass, Amy Landecker, Judith Light, and Alexandra Billings in Transparent (2014)
Following its world premiere at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles, “A Transparent Musical” is heading to Broadway. The stage production will begin its run in 2024.

The musical, which is based on the Amazon Prime Video series “Transparent,” ran from May 23 to June 25 ahead of Pride Month. According to Center Theatre Group (Ctg), which co-produced the show along with Amazon Studios, the musical brought the the highest proportion of audience members under the age of 40 of any Taper production, especially among Gen Z.

The musical was written by Mj Kaufman and Joey Soloway, who created the award-winning and groundbreaking Prime Video original. Music and lyrics were written by Faith Soloway with choreography by James Alsop. Tina Landau served as the production’s director. The Tony-winning Eva Price will produce the show for its Broadway run.

“’Transparent’ remains an incredibly impactful series with salient representation for the Lgbtqia+ community,” Nick Pepper,...

‘A Transparent Musical’ to Open on Broadway Following Los Angeles Run at Mark Taper Forum
Image
“A Transparent Musical” is heading to New York and Broadway. The show, the first stage play from Amazon Studios, premiered in Los Angeles at the Mark Taper Forum in May — becoming the last show at the Taper for now, as Center Theater Group has canceled all shows at the stage following the close of “A Transparent Musical” on June 25.

But whereas the Mark Taper is on hold, “A Transparent Musical” has big things in store. According to Amazon, the show’s producers “intend to bring the show to Broadway sometime in 2024.” The musical, or course, is based on Amazon Prime Video’s Emmy-winning series “Transparent,” created by Joey Soloway, who also wrote the book to the stage musical with Mj Kaufman. Faith Soloway wrote the music and lyrics to “A Transparent Musical.”

Joining them is Tony-winning producer Eva Price, whose play “What the Constitution Means to Me” (by Heidi Schreck...

Max von Sydow in L'Exorciste (1973)
Exclusive: Actor Jesse Merlin Talks 'Exorcistic: The Rock Musical Parody Experiment'
Max von Sydow in L'Exorciste (1973)
The New York City premiere of The Exorcist took place 40 years ago this very night, and Orgasmico Theatre Company has marked the occasion by creating a hilarious, hard-rocking and fourth-wall-breaking musical comedy entitled Exorcistic: The Rock Musical Parody Experiment, which runs throughout this month as part of the Hollywood Fringe Festival. Fans of Stuart Gordon's stage hit Re-Animator: The Musical are celebrating the return of actor Jesse Merlin, who played the diabolical Dr. Hill in that production and has a long history of horror-related stage roles, including Hannibal Lecter in Silence! The Musical. Along with all of the company members, Merlin plays multiple parts in Exorcistic, which not only lampoons The Exorcist and its iconic scenes and dialogue, but manages to poke fun at the whole concept of musical horror parodies themselves, layering one meta-joke on top of another, all the while toying with the idea of the original film's production being “cursed,...

Joe's Garage play carries on Frank Zappa's legacy
[Above: Joe (Jason Paige) asks the question "Why Does It Hurt When I Pee?" in the musical Joe's Garage on stage at the Open Fist Theatre in Los Angeles. The play is an adaptation of Frank Zappa's rock opera of the same name, and will continue until Dec. 20.]

Dancing toilet bowls and man-on-machine sex are mere snippets of the on-stage antics at Open Fist Theatre in Los Angeles, where Frank Zappa’s searing brand of satire is taking center stage. Joe’s Garage, a musical play based on Zappa’s 1979 rock opera, tracks the life of a garage band hobbyist seduced by the illegal world of professional rock music. Los Angeles theatre veterans Pat Towne and Michael Franco adapted Zappa’s songs to fit the stage, aided by Gail Zappa, Frank’s widow.
